It's fair to say in theory a wastegate wasn't likely ever thought to be used on 2 stroke engine to begin with .. .. The pipe is the boss.. but when we add a few hundred degrees .. double the gas density at minimum. And increase the pressure by a factor of 10. Just like any other engine.. Everyone says, "The boost would just blow out the exhaust, and it would never work". Well, guess what? That's how a 2 stroke works when it's N/A, so with boost, it'll work just the same. Fuel and air enter the crank case through a one way valve or a rotary valve that opens and closes when the piston goes up and creates low pressure inside the case. The incoming air/fuel charge is now trapped inside the crankcase, and the piston is at the top of it's stroke. As the piston goes down, the area inside the crankcase is shrinking and pressurizing the fuel/air charge inside of it. As the piston travels down even further, it uncovers the exhaust port, and some ports that lead from the crankcase up into the top of the cylinder. That pressurized fuel/air charge now escapes up through those ports into the cylinder, above the piston. As the piston rises, it closes the exhaust and intake ports, trapping the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber to be fired. The issue with ALL 2 strokes, N/A OR Turbo, is that during the time that BOTH the exhaust port AND crankcase transfer ports are uncovered by the piston, some of the fresh air/fuel mix blows out the exhaust port as it rushes into the cylinder from the crankcase transfer port. That's where the special expansion chamber exhaust pipe comes in... The pipe reflects some of the acoustical energy from the exhaust pulse and reflects it back towards the exhaust port, helping to push some of the escaping fresh charge right back into the cylinder, and stop it from flowing out more until the piston rises enough to cover the ports. Then BANG, and the cycle repeats. So, a turbo on a 2 stroke won't just "blow out the exhaust", anymore than an N/A's pressurized charge from the crankcase does if the pipes are built right. Yes, there is some loss out the exhaust, but so is there on an N/A 2 stroke. The turbo simply crams more air density into the crankcase, and from then on out, the rest happens just the same as it would if the engine was N/A, but it makes more power because of the increased air/fuel charge introduced into the engine.
