  • Chicago's industrial sector is full of industries, from steel to scrap, there of course would be railways that served them. One of these contains a locomotive thats still in service 72 years later.....

I do hope the industry knows the kind of heritage their old work horse has and will be willing to preserve it in some way when the time finally comes to replace it. Cause at 72 years old? Surely it can't kick around for much longer. No matter how compatible EMDs parts are. Sooner or later the cost of maintenance will become to great or too tedious

Ohh I stumbled upon a video of this engine just by chance on youtube a while back. and seeing it, back-dropped against a high arching modern highway bridge with modern cars and trucks... I was hit with something like a combination of sadness and pride. a ghost of the way things used to be. And a way they might have been if cars hadn't become so dominant. A working, hauntological artifact if there ever was one. Good to learn a little more about it's history, and ours, by extension.

I am surprised that you didn't touch on the fact that this unit was ordered with dynamic brakes like switchers on logging railroads. These pups were used on some steeply graded anthracite line by the LV with light axle loading. That is why it has that hump by the cab. Also I always thought of the SW8s as the beginning of the 8 cylinder line of switchers with the later SW900 being the 8-567C successor to the SW8. The SW7 with the 12-567A had The SW9 as the 12-567B equipped succesor and later SW1200 as the 12-567C succesor. The Sw1 stuck around longer with its 6-567 and was eventually succeded by the rare SW600 with a 6-567c

There's a Lehigh Valley 252 switcher at the Depot in Williamsville, NY. Static display. Worked at a local utility until they sold it to the historical society there.

This reminds me of Conrail 8693! This unit was former EL, then bought by Conrail, then sold to red mill company, still wearing its Conrail blue to this day, but lost its logo, on one side, it has red mill company on the side, this locomotive works in bunge Morristown IN where I railfan, it spends its days switching grain and tanker cars, bunge has 4 locomotives, one being a GP9? Could be a GP7, the rest being switchers like this one, one has been restored and repainted into green and blue mix, CSX owns the mainline and takes it all away. If you want to know more just look up Morristown Indiana and then put what you want to know about
