- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Modern league with Jeskai Isochron Scepter Control, a deck from Patreon subscriber Supergub. This brew takes classic Modern Jace and Teferi control principles then adds in the crazy endgame inevitability of Isochron Scepter casting the same spell over and over and over. Unlimited Counterspell? GG. Unlimited Lightning Helix? You're cooked. No more spells EVER with Silence? Enjoy it. MTG

opens the first game saying isochron is a bit memey, isochron ends up dominating
I fully apologize to Scepter. We built the shit out of this deck and it showed.
It turns out the answer to the deck with endless threats is the deck with endless bolts
Recorded the stats for the scepter cause I'm stuck at a waiting room.
The stats might not be entirely accurate, mostly scrubbed back and forth the video.
Match 1:
-G1
Imprinted Counterspell and Lightning Helix
Won G1 on that threat
-G3 Imprinted Lighting Helix
Activated 7 times killing 5 creatures and gaining 21 life
Match 2:
-G1
Imprinted Lightning Bolt
Activated 6 times killing 4 creatures, won by going face
Match 3:
-G1
Imprinted Surge of Salvation
Activated 2 times saving 2 Bowmasters hits
Imprinted Lighting Helix
Activated 3 times killing 3 creatures gaining 9 life
-G2
Imprinted Azorius Charm
Activated once tuck a creature, once again to draw a card
Match 5:
-G1
Imprinted Lighting Helix
Activated 6 times
Killed 6 creatures
Gained 18 life
Stabilized game
-G2
imprinted Lightning Helix
Activated 19 times
Killed 14 creatures
Gained 57 life
Won game by going face
Was looking for that. 19 activations is crazy.
**gaining 57 life**
Insane value
My god
@@lequinow It is, but it's also basically all he was allowed to do all game long, stuck on 2 lands (or going up to 3 then getting Fulmonator'd).
Incredibly happy with how this turned out. Seeing someone do much better with this build than I have been able to is great. I'm glad that the Scam matchup wound up being as favorable as it was, I think having an engine that doesn't involve the words "draw a card" that can still control the board or win the game is a significant contributor there. Thanks for the content and the deckbuilding advice!
This was awesome. Thanks for sharing it with us. :)
Seeing evoke elementals has just started putting a feeling of dread in me that I haven't felt since my LGSs meta was 60% lantern control
Loved the old school style deck! Also, great to see you in professor's channel
Thanks!
Going to need a final count of Isochron/Helix activations
48 times cast including from hand, about 42 I think off Scepter
MASSED VALUE
@@lessercrowgods work. Fun af to see him just drive people into the dirt with scepter. There's a reason it'll always be on people's minds for a brew.
Yeah the 4 living end is pretty stock now, really helps fight through counterspells and hate when you can pull the trigger more often
Grief can also use ones you happen to draw
59:15 "Drawing cards is the same as winning" never change Bosh
Wait wait wait, this isnt the island ponder format
Best I can do is preordain.
No it’s the island preordain format
A real scam
I swear every time you get even a tiny bit hasty, living end slams the door shut. It’s taught me to play very very very conservatively against cascade decks.
I also think playing against 5 grief decks is a pretty big indicator of the evoke elementals, grief especially homogenizing the format a bit.
Incredible league with some of the coolest cards in magic, an absolute treat to see scepter putting in huge work
Thousands of years ago when the earth was a big ball of fire and extended was a thing I played a scepter chant control deck with things like counterspell and boomerang and iridescent angel as my finisher of choice.
I played something like that too, but it was mostly fire/ice on the scepter and Dr Teeth (psychatog) was the finished.
@@robmccarty755I wish we could put fire ice on the scepter these days :(
This episode was so good, i hope people don't skip because it's modern and not legacy or because it's 2 hours. Every game was exciting and fun despite triple Rakdos Scam. This matchup also seems great against burn
I skipped this, expecting it to be a another janky combo deck. Prior to this, my only exposure to Scepter was as a 2-card infinite combo in old EDH lists.
I only ended up watching because of the shout-out in the recent Boros Control video (which was also awesome).
Loved this. Had such an exceptionally great time. My style of deck in my format of choice. I do always enjoy witnessing the popular agro decks get owned by a tasty control deck.
In the final game of final round, I believe you could have handily won the match - and much sooner - by going face with Helix with your life total well north of twenty rather than opting to incessantly pick off their small creatures for *many* turns longer than needed??
The absence of a single Celestial Colonnade at minimum is inexcusable. This deck needs another one or two win condition cards. Flying on Colonnade dissuades easy chumping with 1/1 tokens like with Storm Giants. In a deck low on win con's, a bit more resilient evasion is helpful.
I like the three Scepter's. With such a mammoth upside, ensure it reaches your hand. Each iteration of Scepter accomplishes something - imprinting another spell - versus cards which are truly superfluous and moot in multiple copies, like Prismatic Omen or something.
Imprinting modal control cards - like Azorius Charm! - is equivalent to very decent sex. Dawn Charm is a delightful and useful one to imprint.
Yeah opponent not always has - or even plays - the K-Command. I audibly and enthusiastically supported the intrepid jamming of Scepter on Helix following all the Fulminators. That is hot shit.
Brian's streaming style is a delight. Any Coval video in Modern format is the most fun one can have with their pants on.
You know the video is gonna be good when game 2 ends at an hour.
I used to play Iso Control in Extended, back when you could imprint Research // Development into it. Usually it was over after resolving two Ancestral Recalls.
It's pretty wild that putting Lightning Helix under Isochron Scepter singlehandedly trumps the entirety of the deck that won the Pro Tour.
1:31:37 The current Living End deck on the MTGGoldfish Modern meta page has 4x Living End.
Also, I saw you boarding out all your Lightning * cards and my immediate thought was "does he actually have any way to win the game now?" 😅
Easy to miss but at 1:30:00 the fourth living end was revealed. Anyways this deck was sweet!
@@listeningtomusic7665 that was the previously cascaded living end, it still shows up in the revealed cards.
I remember playing this back in 2011 when I visited a card shop, and the Isochron Scepter + Lightning Helix combo was totally unheard of tech at that shop - my opponent scooped the game as soon as I resolved it XD
Isochron- That card that FEELS like it would have been banned at some point but it never was
@@Dracomandriuthus Having to invest two cards and 6 mana to get 2 cards and 4 mana worth of effects, is just usually not that good. Without Surge of Salvation to make it hexproof, it's just a nice two-for-one to all the Naturalize effects of the world. It's never existed in a context that lacked efficient answers to it.
It's a card with a very high ceiling, but also a very low floor, which makes it pretty balanced overall IMO. In the match I described, the card became a liability in game two when my opponent brought in Artifact hate.
Cool deck and crazy last game with sceptre. One of my favorite modern videos in a while.
I like how "The 4th copy of the key card in their deck" is "crazy tech"
Isochron Scepter was extremely legitimate, I'm impressed.
Man, that last game was insane. I cant believe how many times you activated isochron. Absolutely wild
Been coming back to this after MH3, Scepter Chant is legal now getting some sweet tech ready
When I saw the thumbnail and title, I was excited to see the deck, but prepared for a 1-4 league
you did not disappoint good sir
Scepter is such a cool card, and this deck is one of the most fun versions thus far! Love it
Surge of Salvation seems like a really good way to protect Isochron Scepter, that didn't really exist back when I played this deck a decade ago. Sure, it's a third card to invest in your slow clunky combo, but it's uniquely a way to protect it from basically any interaction that an opponent is likely to have, and that's awesome.
Watching this grind was exciting and just awesome!
I’ve been playing metamorph in the board of both shadow and murktide, as well as some blue soup control builds in modern. It’s great against 4 color, where all of their creatures are insane, and copying the one ring is pretty sweet as well
This brings me back to happy modern times, well done
I remember throwing a kitchen table deck of this style together. Indeed inspired to build with it
So amazing to see scepter go off, game 5 was insane
"I kinda would like start winning the game... " 2:40 on the clock 🤣Beautiful deck and matchups!!!
Loving this from the gym ! Good mid morning from San Diego !
azorius charm makes me all nostalgic for ivan flochs UW control from pro tour M15
Oh man. This is the dream I had back in the day when opening those scepters in Mirrodin boosters.
Any time i get to see a control deck squeeze with isochron scepter, I'm here for it.
Scepter/Chant is a classic, but I always preferred Scepter/Boomerang to keep bouncing people's lands and lock them out of their top ends lol
2:00:45 you had lethal, the last card in their hand was ragavan, animate hall and bash in for the win.
2:00:00 You knew they only had Ragavan in hand for the hall of storm giants win (maybe up to a minute after time stamp)
All I ever wanted, all I ever needed.
Wow. What a game that last one was
And the award for the most copies of Lightning Helix cast in a single MTGO league goes to!...
That last game was bonkers
Blue and white cards plus a two hour video runtime? Is grindy control back on the menu?!?!?! Woot!
scepter helix gives me LIFE
Good memories from 2000's extended format era
Loving end players I’ve talked to locally play the 4th living end in the sideboard to bring in against counterspell decks
It worked!
Love it!
round 5 game 2 ... this is certainly a game of Magic the Gathering.
God that last game was so good!
This league was amazing!
I played Scepter chant in Legacy around 20 years ago 😂
Is the Raffine's tower, Ketria triome pair better in this deck because it guarantees that helix is castable off of the two triomes? I mean the downside is that they are basically dual lands instead of triomes but that might be preferable to the situation from Match 1 Game 3?
Only old school control players have the trama of the rando Thrun 😂
Jeebus that final game 😱
You can get some sense of how many Living Ends the opponent is running based on how far they're cascading each time. Between the two pitched Living Ends early in games and the fact that they never cascaded very deep, it suggests that if any opponents run four, this may be one of them. Honestly, it was going to be really ugly to play around it though.
The longer the game goes, the better scepter gets
Been waiting for Isochron.
You and I are different. I would have gone full aggro match 1 game 3. Not sure if that would have been the correct choice or not but it felt good to me.
Ah, the memories when I played extended Scepter/Chant with Fire/Ice and Lightning Angels.
@BoshNRoll Fire / Ice is really fun to put on Scepter too.
Doesn’t work anymore. The rules were changed a few years ago. That’s a 4-drop in hand.
@@BoshNRollToo bad, it used to be the best card for it IMO.
At 54:00, you could have saved yourself some damage but floating white then casting helix off the newly minted fetchland mountain. Then you still have access to your fetch if that becomes important later.
Phil's Didgeridoo minotaur deck used to be my favourite. Now it's this. Awesome video!
I punted a top 2 final PTQ Honolulu back in the day with scepter chant. NO STICK.
Always hated scam. Feels good to see it shredded by a pointy stick
Great league Bosh 😎😎😎
I haven't watched the matches yet but what about adding a celestial colonnade or two to get use out of life link mode of azorious charm and also help deal with planeswalkers?
Loved how grindy this league was
Step 1, board out Isochron Scepter
Step 2, win the game with the remaining Isochron Scepter, because fuck it, why not
Damn Round 1 was intense
In the last match you should have fired up Hall and swung for lethal, they had one card and it was the dashed ragavan from the previous turn. Also Azorius charming the ragavan was better than the bowmaster because it opens up a window for them to hit 3tef, binding, etc with the ragavan to remove the Isochron.
Insert "IT'S LIGHTNING HELIX!!" meme here
you need a crown to go with that scepter, cause it makes you king
Going down on Teferis seems like it would be many people's dream
"Island Preordain, you know i'm keeping this one"
New Slogan when?
31:30 Maybe playing around future scepters makes needle better than haywire mite, although it can be answered so there's pros and cons.
isochron counterspell is like the 3 2blue jace ult
I think Brian could win matches with a ham sandwich, as long as it has removal and counter magic
Can we give exhalted angel some love. That card was gas back in the day.
Love it
Is there a reason to not run Kaheera in this deck? It feels like it would be better than the 15th sideboard card.
Also at 34:42, why not bounce your own Leyline Binding that has nothing under it to exile the needle, rather than just temporarily bouncing it for a turn?
Love BoshNControl
What a deck
is Muddle the Mixture not good enough for modern? I played a brew of scepter chant back when extended was a format and used muddle as a tutor for basically anything in the deck that I need
Sadly, I don't think a 2 mana *conditional* counterspell that can be an expensive tutor is really worth it. What card(s) would you take out to put the Muddles in?
assuming this was a jeopardy clue, "What is decklists that slap?"
Brian could've played Portent as a cantrip that also combos with scepter
Portent is a sorcery that is not legal in modern
I'm sorry I read the cards but didn't realize it was a Modern video at first, and this card has been on my mind for weeks now, I had to shout out it
Dang that ring kinda out classes the old scepter 😂
Seeing Rakdos scam getting dismantled brings me joy
This deck is so 2012 it's basically T1.X.
My favorite Depeche Mode song AND my favorite archetype in my favorite hobby? SIGN. ME. UP. !!!
Okay fine I'll pick up isochron scepters
In the last match you could've won a turn earlier with hall begat they only had a known ragavan in hand
Depeche mode has entered chat.
this deck is fuckin sweet
couldn't angel's grace find a place somewhere in this list ?
Why didnt you put Impulse under Scepter
Force of Negation should be Disrupting Shoal. Your blue spells curve out.
Dammit Bosh this build is too sweet not to play.
Today I learned not to board out my win condition
to hell with Knuckle-dragging scam players. Love this deck. Also, I would in fact love to watch you guest at LRR and play Canadian Highlander. Seeing you on Shuffle Up was a treat.
My only complaint with this list is that it doesn't have the fourth counterspell.
Besides that, this deck is SO GAS, and almost makes me want to play modern again.
Match 1 Game 1 seems like it’s just over if he put Surge under Scepter when he had the opening good win but would of been a non game
