Years ago the Jewel I had was Dominant over both my JD & Convict. My Oscar & Severum were both too big to mess with. But then I got an Auratus that took over until I got my most aggressive fish; M Vermiverus.
Man i love this video. I just think its bad ass, the way that JEWEL CICHLID stands up to a bigger fish. He has alot of heart. That fish is gangsta, id pay top dollar to keep that fish.
Yeah this is an example of what not to do with cichlids, since this tank was obviously way too small. The poster said this was just temporary, so that's good, but obviously even temporary takes a risk, since they could have killed each-other. Cichlids need space; the more the better, especially with this many different fish in the tank; they had no "territory" to establish in this tank setting. Poor parrot was getting slapped about and he wanted nothing to do with either of them!
Actually, jewels come from West Africa in the same waters the Kribensis is found - they wouldn't do to well in rift lake conditions (and probably wouldn't hang with the insane aggression of mbuna). They adapt pretty well to typical Central/South American water conditions, and will usually work well with medium/medium large cichlids of those regions.
My Texas has really sharp teeth .. He has nearly taken chunks out of my hand a few times ... Thats why I wear leather gloves when i arrange his tank... The pet store never said they were like piranhas
They look a little under fed but colours are great. How big is the tank? Seem a bit too crowded unless every fish you had decided to collect in the corner while you were video taping :)
I was thinking of one pair of jewel cichlids for a 30 gallon long tank (36 inch long but think only 12 inches wide) . They will be only fish. Do you think it can be done ot to dangerous for the female? thanks
wow really. cool. i have a RUthless male melanochromis auratus. That so far has killed convicts, green terror, electric blue hap, and a jack dempsey. Ima get me some of these cichlids. U think they can stand a chance ?
@GlenS4 Thank you very much. I was afraid that the male might kill the female and wasn't sure if a 30 gallon was enough room for a female to escape from an aggressive male but will not get a pair. Granted going to use driftwood, etc as visual barriers. Thanks
@ez0429 i have a 6" red oscar, two 7" blood red parrots, 2 pleco one is 8" and other is about 5", one 7" striped raphael catfish, and three 3" jewel cichlids... The fatter blood red parrot runs the tank, the oscar isnt afraid of any of the fish in there but he is weary about messing with the parrot (i dont know why cause they have stupid mouths and cant do anything), the oscar sometimes gets excited thinking the jewels are feeders lol... but the jewels chase down guppies better than the others
i have pair of jewels and 1 taxas not as big as that but i think my jewel is the same size. in my tank jewel own but they only get aggressive when they are having babys other then that they are good. i have some of up to 5 baby's of the pair grown to 3" and in community fish tank. they do kill each other out but i have got more baby's on the way and had about 20 of they grown to 1-2" and then another 10. problem now is that the tanks are getting expansive and probably get to much.
all those fish have similiar temperment so there shouldnt be a problem . I keep my jewel with other african cichlids and they all leave each other alone
I dig your severums, looking nice! Where'd u get ur TX from? Are they store or wild caughts? I tried to video response with my 6 baby tx cichlids eating mosquito fry. I caught them with a dipnet in southern texas. cheers
how is the cleaning and maintnence of the smaller rocks in your tank?. ive been wanting to put smaller rocks or even sand in my tank but im not sure if its easy to keep clean
maybe you guys can help me out: I have a 55 gallon Malawii set-up and my Red Jewel has bread with my Turquoise Jewel. Now I have about a million baby Jewel Cichlids in my tank. The parents are REALLY protective. Should I leave the fry alone or remove from the tank?
@jail229 you hav to what texas or jewel? if it jewel no. but if its 2 texas then its still not cramped because there only 2" but when they get a bit bigger i will be im gettin either a juvenile-dovii,jag,dempsy or texas for my 10 gallon for tempory to bring them up so i can put it with my super red male flowerhorn witch is 5" in a 55 gallon or with my 8" jardini saratoga in his 90 gallon
i recently bought 3 jewel bimaculatus i think , but they are the best purchase ive ever made , they can cope with fish much bigger cos they are so fast and confident very much like convicts and we all know how tough they are
What cichlids do you think can go with clarias batrachus? i have kept a lot........ of cichlids and none of them can stand up to my clarias.. I have a list of cichlids on my channel. Check it out and reply me.
I was gonna get a jewel cichlid last week but the guy at the LFS told me they were too aggressive for my convict and firemouth now I can see what he means
Ya its like they havent been good feeding right? I had several fishes and I had the same problems the jewel and Texas fight often like they hate each other and the jewels turns red bright!!! a shame both are amazing animals!!
I have to get rid om my texas cichlid. im tired of it rearranging my tank and attacking the pump. hes in a 55 with a smaller one and the small one is just mellow.
My Jewel Cichlid is like 8'' long and he would own ur fish. he already killed a lobster and a yellow lab, i found it on the floor when I went to the store and he was still alive and i put him back in the tank, then he died a few days later, and the yellow lab he just abused to no end.
My jewel attacks everyone, including convicts, green terror and firemouth. The only one he leaves alone is a juvi yellow lab that follows the jewel around the tank.
Red Jewel Cichild Aggression Level: These are one of the most aggressive tropical fish kept these cichlids will terrorize and kill the entire tank sometimes including their breeding mate.
my male jewel sadly died few weeks ago he was 2 and a half years old and lived with one tankmate , my big male salvini, after killing his girlfriend who he breeded with many times, he disposed of weaker male fish very quickly, he had a gill tumour that killed him but he was by far the toughest fish i have ever owned or came across, pound for pound a true warrior with huge personality as well
Don't Jewel's usually kill off everything in the tank when they're ready to breed? That may have been what was going on here. The Jewel was in breed mode.
Within 30 minutes of relocating the tank boss, he is ruling over my much larger tank with lots of fish that are larger than he is. He's obviously an alpha that wants complete control of the tank. I don't think he's strong enough to kill any other fish in the tank. I'm hoping it will work out. Time will tell. Seeing how my Jewels were in terror in the other tank and the dominance he has displayed since I moved him to the larger tank with more fish, more structure and more water, I think I was right to move the tank boss to the larger tank. If the boss turns all my other cichlids colorless, then he will need to go. I've never killed a fish or sold a fish from my tanks. But I can't have an alpha fish terrorizing every other fish in the tank.
uncrowd the tank and let the fishes coexist in peace. What kind of 'aquarist' or fish fancier mistreats fish? This tank is both overcrowded, and you have two fish fighting for territory. Of course, since the cichlids aren't showing any real injury, maybe this scrapping is just the two cichlids passing the time pushing and shoving each other. Who really knows what goes on in the mind of animals? Still, the tank is crowded and that is never a positive feature in an aquarium.
Wesley G jewel cichlids are some of the most aggressive of all cichlids and can kill other big cichlids, there is a chance he will die but he might likely kill the Texas cichlid.
All the other fish are like fuck this I'm staying out of this one.
Very nice Jewel , my Jewels are hyper aggressive , I can only imagine what they'd be like if they grew as large as other Cichlids.....
They’d prolly make dovi look like lil kids lol
wow what guts that jewel has, I currently keep a 3" texas with my 11' Oscar and he holds his own no problem. Great video ty for sharing!
Years ago the Jewel I had was Dominant over both my JD & Convict. My Oscar & Severum were both too big to mess with. But then I got an Auratus that took over until I got my most aggressive fish; M Vermiverus.
Texas is lucky the Jewel doesn't get as big..Both are great fish to raise !
My favorite youtube fish fight. Go to 1:40 and you will notice texas cichlid lost a big piece of its bottom fin. Jewel cichlid is thug.
YOU DIDN'T EVEN SEE THE JEWEL GO INTO AFTERBURNER. i DID WHEN THEY BRED WITH EACH OTHER, MY JEWEL BEAT THE WHOLE TANK OF CICHLIDS 3 TIMES THEIR SIZE.
Man i love this video. I just think its bad ass, the way that JEWEL CICHLID stands up to a bigger fish. He has alot of heart. That fish is gangsta, id pay top dollar to keep that fish.
Respect to the small brave fish : )

You can deff tell the texas cichlid was getting frustrated at the end
i liked how this fight got pretty technical... good fight.
@cichlids2292 yea man ill check it out, but hey did u check out that video of the snapping turtle destroying the texas cichlid?
can you keep Jewels with Discus, Blue Rams, Festiviums and Angels? thanx
I just got one yesterday and I choose the most calm one. His been hiding since. But this guy is out of control I love him.
They look a little under fed but colours are great. How big is the tank? Seem a bit too crowded unless every fish you had decided to collect in the corner while you were video taping :)

Why do you have severums in a tank with jewels and texas cichlids?
My jewel Cichlid is doing fine in my Oscars ,Jack Dempsey , Green terror , Dinosaur Bichir , and african Cichlid
jewels is underated. theyre tough.
What cichlids do you think can go with clarias batrachus? i have kept a lot........ of cichlids and none of them can stand up to my clarias.. I have a list of cichlids on my channel. Check it out and reply me.

I'm breeding my male jewel cichlid with a female salvini cichlid 😊
I was gonna get a jewel cichlid last week but the guy at the LFS told me they were too aggressive for my convict and firemouth now I can see what he means
I have about 30 jewel cichlids. They keep having babies!
I have found Jewels to be far less aggresive when they have grown up without the influence of they're parents.
damn the jewel ripped a chunk out of the texas fin at 1:38
Why are their bellies are concave?
Ya its like they havent been good feeding right? I had several fishes and I had the same problems the jewel and Texas fight often like they hate each other and the jewels turns red bright!!! a shame both are amazing animals!!
not surprised, i added a male jewel today, there was already a female and he attacked my 5 inch red devil
To be fair, the texas is pretty small, and the jewel is pretty big.
Ashraf Farid the jewel is the smaller red fish
Yes he know he means its big for a jewel and small for a texas
It's like juvenile texas vs adult jewel
i wonder who won which it looks like the jewel cichlid??
@korva23222 after a few minutes of fighting they establish who's dominant then rarely fight after
which is the red striped fish
I have to get rid om my texas cichlid. im tired of it rearranging my tank and attacking the pump. hes in a 55 with a smaller one and the small one is just mellow.
wat filter yo using ?
whats size tank? awesome fish!!
your video showing never kept jewel with texas. but i want to keep both of them together in medium size aquarium. is it possible for ever?
My Jewel Cichlid is like 8'' long and he would own ur fish. he already killed a lobster and a yellow lab, i found it on the floor when I went to the store and he was still alive and i put him back in the tank, then he died a few days later, and the yellow lab he just abused to no end.
tank looks way too small....go on craigslist and get a cheap big aquarium like my 110 gallon for 275$ including all the works
The jewels are awesome
My jewel attacks everyone, including convicts, green terror and firemouth. The only one he leaves alone is a juvi yellow lab that follows the jewel around the tank.
Red Jewel Cichild Aggression Level: These are one of the most aggressive tropical fish kept these cichlids will terrorize and kill the entire tank sometimes including their breeding mate.
the bellies are concave if its a male the female is more rounded :)

Lol 1:00 the smaller fish got owned...and at if you pause at 2:07 the other fish that was standing around got cranked with him...
Dude.. that Jewel knows how to scrap......
Great video!
jewel cichlids are declared a noxious pest here where i live so we can get fined for keeping them... :( sad
my male jewel sadly died few weeks ago he was 2 and a half years old and lived with one tankmate , my big male salvini, after killing his girlfriend who he breeded with many times, he disposed of weaker male fish very quickly, he had a gill tumour that killed him but he was by far the toughest fish i have ever owned or came across, pound for pound a true warrior with huge personality as well

lol, my female green terror (9cm) killed my 15cm clarisas :S.
BTW. COOL VIDEO!
Brave Jewel? Try crazy. I have a Jewel cichlid and he'll attack and eat anything. That tank is ridiculously overstocked.
Don't Jewel's usually kill off everything in the tank when they're ready to breed? That may have been what was going on here. The Jewel was in breed mode.
My Oscar killed a pair of jewel's chiclid
MJ SAVAGE Those are beautiful too. Just saw a massive one at the pet store the other day.
I hope none of them were killed before they could be sold....
Thats a carprintis hybrid or something not a cirtified Texas cichlid.
a jewel should only be kept in a African cichlid tank..
Lol.... I have had plenty of jewel cichlids and iv never had one do well with American cichlids..
Nice vid cool Texas
awsome sevrum
Those are Carpintis (or Blue Texas)
QUEM GANHO?

This is epic
certainly not like my jewel. texas cichlid chases him and he just slowly swims away
He's got a lot of courage, but he will die.
Wesley G jewel cichlids are some of the most aggressive of all cichlids and can kill other big cichlids, there is a chance he will die but he might likely kill the Texas cichlid.
100 bucks says the jewel cichlid eventually ripped the texas fins right off if left like this
