    Your best weapon is the ability to say NO and walk away. The last time I bought a vehicle at a Honda dealership, the sales guy was "giving us the business" and coming up with excuses why they couldn't give us the price we wanted on a brand new Honda CR-V. He got up to go "speak with his manager." As soon as he left, we got up and started walking across the showroom floor and towards the door. Just as we got to the door, the sales guy came running out and stopped us. He asked, "Where are you going?" We said, "Well, you're making this too much of a hassle so we're heading over to the Toyota dealership." The guy backpedaled super quickly and we ended up walking out of the dealership with the vehicle we wanted at the price we wanted.

    I'm 72. I've never traded a car in, and I've never financed through a dealership. I decide on the vehicle we want, determine a fair price, then send emails to every dealership within 75 miles with the details and my offer. I usually only get a few dealers willing to talk, and if they try "talking me up," I shut them down. I've had some lie to me via phone or email to get me on the lot, which is a deal breaker 99.9% of the time. My attitude is always, "I don't need you, (the dealership), or their vehicle because there are plenty of others down the street. Yes, it's my next job....everything went silent for a moment - then I spoke again: But NOT with you! He said give me 10 mins and I'll see what I can do.. 10 mins later he comes back and beats my best quote .....and? So I told him to take a hike. He asked why if he gave me the best price why wouldn't I place the order??? I told him straight: Every one had my spec and the same opportunity. Customers have turned the industry into what it is, not salespeople. If you just paid the sticker price like everyone else cars wouldn't be marked up so high. They'll ask if I want the "protection plan" on a durable product, but that's about the size of it. You think it's the CUSTOMERS' fault that the dealers mark things up and put second stickers on cars? It's so ironic to hear a dealer playing the victim. All we had to do is pay the sticker price? Well, all you had to do is say "no" to the haggling. So don't lay all the blame on the consumer. I don't play dishonest games with salespeople, but I can't say that for an awful lot of the salespeople I've encountered. You're exactly the entitled guy Kevin is talking about. Did his research, and ran my credit through all kinds of insitutions to find me the best rate. With $6,000, I only owed him $3,999. Unfortunately, taxes and licensing brought the loan total to another $3,200. Still-$9,999 for a 2014 Carolla was $3,000 less than every other dealer in the area, and NONE of them would have bothered shopping lenders for me-be a waste of time. The one-man operation gave him plenty of time for a very personalized and low-pressure experience since he's not on commission!

    Here is what I do: I ask about getting the lowest monthly payment which makes them think I'm financing it. Once the papers are drawn up after making the deal, I reference the early payoff section of the loan papers. If they say anything about a prepayment penalty, I use that to change my mind and pay cash. If the early payoff section of the loan papers don't impose any penalty, then I either sign the papers and pay off the loan immediately or just offer cash instead. Works. Every. Time. They don't like it, but I'm not responsible for their employment choices.

    • @TheCraftydevilSpeaks
      @TheCraftydevilSpeaks Год назад +25

      Around here that’s how you have to do it. Don’t say you’re paying cash. Try to have pre approval from your bank first if you can, if you tell them your buying it outright AFTER they offer you negotiate a price and if they try to change it, either walk, or see if there is a penalty clause, if there isn’t, sign the loan and the wait 1 month and pay it off. I also tell them in advance my patience is short, so don’t bother stacking add-ons to the deal as I’m wise to it and won’t pay it, I have other cars I’m interested in down the road. As a woman interested in buying a 2 or 3 year old with low mileage, it’s hard to get a salesman to even pay attention to you. I’ve even had a couple of them tell me to come back with my husband first when I said I’m interested in buying this one! I told him I don’t have one of those so look, I’m buying a car, I can buy it from you or I can buy it from somebody else, so what’s it gonna be? I blow them away when I tell them to shut up so I can hear the engine run awhile, check the oil, look for wet spots on the engine, walk around to look at the color of the exhaust, etc. I’ve worked around cars when I was younger, so I can recognize some problems the car may have and have bought 4 used dealer cars (2 certified with full warranties, 2 without when NJ made them guarantee it would pass full inspection) and I’ve had each over 10 years without paying major repairs on them. When it gets to that point, I trade it in for another 2-3 year old. (Don’t tell them what’s wrong with your car, they’re going to look it over anyway before offering a trade in but you may get away with a good trade in price anyway) When I ask to drive it, some play games and say they can’t locate the keys right now, let’s go inside and talk, I say “that’s too bad, nice car, I was really interested in this one “ and start to walk away. Suddenly the keys appear. After the test drive, I inspect the engine again. Had one I thought I was going to buy that was not certified but was an excellent price and looked good under the hood but after waiting over a half hour for him to find the keys (total lie) and test driving it, there was oil leaking down the side of the engine so I said no. He told me I could park in front of the side of the repair bay, not where it was parked originally. I think they were cleaning the engine down to hide the issue that’s why they didn’t want me to drive it. I determined I was not buying anything from that dealer. Last thought, test drive on dry days, so any squeaks will be noticeable. If your a woman, act tough but do your homework and if you know nothing about cars, find someone who really does, knows something about the paperwork for buying and pay them if you have to , and have them go with you when you find one you like. Take all the time you want and play with everything in the car to make sure everything works. Don’t worry about taking up too much of their time, he wants a sale, then he’s got to do the time, this is a big decision, new or old. The lights, directionals, wipers, radio, how the brakes feel, etc. Any minor issues? Ask if they’ll fix first if you buy, write it down and have him sign it, if they won’t, either say ok, price reduction or sorry, not buying it.

    Sold cars 30 years ago. I was young. Old guy walks in the dealer, Friday night 830, we close at 9. We find his car, negotiate, come to a deal. Price was low but the manager was ok with it "we'll make the money on finance fees, title, registration etc". We write up the paperwork, its now past 9pm, dealership is closed but are there completing the deal. Everything is done, finance manger comes over with all the paperwork tells the guy to sign. Guy says, what's all this? Finance tells him these are you numbers and this is your payment. Guy says hold on. Goes to his car, takes a small bag in the dealership, grabs the paperwork and says "this is the cost of the car right?" Points at the actual line item of the base price. Finance says "yes". He pulls all the cash from the bag, counts it out, puts it on the table and says "I'm not financing anything. I'm buy the car at that price, don't wash it, dont take the plastic off the seats, don't fill the tires. Just ring me up and give me the keys. We were stuck at that point. Can't tell him we were gonna make money on everything else that he just cut from the deal. Told him he had to wait for title and registration. He says nope. Ill do all that myself. Just ring it up, give me my receipt and ill call jeep for the title. That's what ended up happening at 10pm. He drove off the lot and my boss was pissed. Dealership made $500 bucks.

    I play the "Dumb Blonde" and that works for me all the way through the negotiation process. I talk slow with few words and treat the sales person like my best friend. When the papers are turning on the table I get silent...the sales person squirms because they are taught "The first person who speaks losses!" The silence will drop the price or create a better or best deal. I send the sales person back and forth at least three times, I play dumb and slow all the way to the end. 😉👍 Oh! I should mention that I sold cars and was trained thoroughly how to sell cars.😎👍

The financing is handled through GM and Ford and the dealership gets no kickback or interest from the financing, the financing is purely between you and the manufacturer not the dealership..

    Great Info!
    I agree, you must be in control! I went with my daughters friend to purchase a new car (Honda Fit) and told her when I say lets go, to stand up and we leave. I told the sales person I don't want to play tag with him and his manager, so I told (not ask) him we wanted the car at MSRP OTD! He said he'd have to check with his manager, which I expected. Well it took about 30min and I was about to leave, when he came back and said it can't be done, we'd have to pay for all the docs, tax etc. I told him then I guess you'll have to lower the MSRP to meet all those charges to the original MSRP. Another I have to check, so I told him if he comes back with something else we will leave. This time it only took 10min and said it can't be done. See it's all a game of calling each others bluff, but they need to sell the car where you don't need to buy that particular car...you have the upper hand to be in charge. So I just looked at my daughters friend and said lets go. Told the sales guy thank you for trying, but we're not interested in the car for the price they are offering. Well low and behold as we were leaving they called her cell and said has a deal for the price she offered!
    I did this when my wife and I purchased a 2022 Prius, which I did not like, but she did. This worked out so good for us to play good cop/bad cop. Again I told the assistant sales manager I want the car OTD at the MSRP price. He asked if I test drove the car, I said no I don't have to. He then said he'll need to clear this with the manager...ok. came back and said the manager wants you to test drive the car...hmmm. He asked my wife if she wanted to test drive the car, she said it's all up to my husband. I told him, first off the car is ugly and I really don't want to buy, but my wife likes it, so if I need to test drive the car you're going to have to promise me the car at MSRP out the door...I wrote that down on his offering paper and told him to sign it. He initialed it, which was fine. Took the car to a test drive, came back and got the car for MSRP OTD. He said you really don't want to pay taxes huh? I told him does the Dealership want to pay taxes? Good cop/Bad cop is another way to go to stay in control!

    I use to be a car salesman. It was a fantastic experience. The most important thing that Elizabeth said here is to know what you want! People seem to fall apart when they get on the sales floor, I’ve actually seen some people shake when they got on the lot it’s ridiculous. Know what you want. Don’t let the salesman pull stuff out of you. What kind of car do you want? How much do you want to spend? What do you want your payment to be? And are you going to be financing this? Most people don’t know and that’s not the salesman‘s fault. It’s their fault. The sales guy cannot be showing the customer a Cadillac when they should only be looking at a used Chevy. The salesman doesn’t want to get jerked around either because you have no idea how much cars cost and you don’t even know what you want. Buying a car is not an impulse item but it is an emotional buy, so keep your head and know what you want. Otherwise, you’re are going to get your ass kicked!

    Great video!! I once, a few years back, walked into a used car dealership with my husband (who is on the quiet side naturally - but I'm not afraid to speak up) and we walked out of there with a great deal, and in the end (knowing the value on all of it of course...) paid cash AND a 14 kt watch was in the mix. We felt that the car paid off would be a better value than the watch we did not need, and I could see he wanted the watch for himself, and worked it slightly to OUR advantage. My husband was AMAZED! The car dealer (who owned the dealership) was thrilled, and we got a great car! Gold went up, but so did the value of the car.... BINGO!

I like her answers really well and they would be great for the first time the dealer asks an inappropriate question, , but it's amazing how disconcerting it is to people to respond with silence. They'll ask the question again thinking I didn't hear, and again I'll ignore them completely, not look at them, say nothing and let them pick up the conversation with a different topic. They're emotionally shaken.

    Several years ago I went into a Chevy dealership to buy a particular model. They told me they didn't have that car in stock but they had something similar. So I looked at the car, took a test drive and then went into the office to discuss the deal. I was very clear about how much I wanted to spend and how much of a monthly payment I wanted to make. When all was said and done the car was a few thousand dollars over what I wanted to spend. As I was getting ready to walk out, the finance man said why don't you take it home and just see how you like it. I said okay , but if I decide I don't like the car I better not find mine missing when I come back. So we exchanged cars. The next morning I brought the car back and told the new salesman that I wanted my own car back. I told him to tell the original salesman that I never intended to buy the car when I left last night because he disregarded my stipulations for the deal. And that if he was going to waste my time, I'd waste his.

The sales rep was not included in my financing details other than knowing my Credit score (800+) and ability to pay. I also had an appointment that I couldn't miss that would force me to leave in 45 minutes with no options. when the finance loan was presented, I said it's not low enough, I'll just write you a check. Oh, I made them remove all those stupid document fees and crappy services. Since it was a 5 yo BMW at a Chevy dealer, I guess they were just happy to offload it. I would like to know what dealerships she goes to who write a contract before they know how she is going to pay LOL. The contract is written explaining how you are going to pay. Saying a car salesman is going to follow you around asking how you are going to pay is Ludacris. Never have I seen or heard of this tactic if your salesman does this leave or ask for someone else to help you. You can negotiate a cash deal with a sales rep. As a salesman we don't care if you pay cash or finance we get paid the same regardless. Nothing wrong with negotiating but her tactics suck and you don't need to treat a sales person like shit to negotiate a deal. And you don't negotiate the price of the vehicle in the finance office. The finance office can't type up a contract until they know how you are paying so they can type the contract LOL.

On 2 occasions I have had the finance officer get angry with me and the room gets very silent and I also start getting angry. It’s a fun time making the finance guy angry cause he knows that i am their to buy a vehicle and he also knows that I won’t be pushed around so I could just get up and leave if he makes me mad.
