    Quick thing, cuirassier armor was bullet proof. That's actually where we get the term from, the smith would shoot the plate with a pistol as proof that it would protect the wearer. They ditched most of their armor because to resist gunfire they made it thicker, and thus heavier, making a full suit impractically heavy.

    • @alaskancosmic3012
      @alaskancosmic3012  2 года назад +65

      After quick research (more will be done, I only checked Wikipedia briefly lol), I have found conflicting reports of how effective plate armor was against bullets. I cannot recall what I watched but I remember someone saying it would take several inches of steel to stop a musket - which would support your point that armor was made thicker to be more resistant to bullets and that would make a full suit of such thick armor impractical. Maybe just a thickened cuirass or helmet would support their continued use, especially for cavalry because I assume horses helped support that extra weight. But that is only my guess, it still seems impractical to wear such heavy armor for regular use.
      Also, I have heard that same origin of the term "bulletproof" from the channel Shadiversity, which I'm guessing you got from as well. It can be plausible, I read that Napoleonic French regulations required cuirasses to be bulletproof against three shots at close range. A smith testing steel plates with a pistol sounds like it happened here! And the origin of the word coming from a French term helps support that: bullet = boulette, meaning "small ball," while proof comes from Latin "probare," meaning to prove. However, it was noted that this could never be achieved and thus the regulation had to be adjusted for cuirasses to be bulletproof against one shot at long range. This reflects how ineffective they protected against bullets.
      In the end, I think cuirassier armor reflected the changing battlefield: increasing use of firearms but still widespread use of melee weapons and changing battle tactics due to said weaponry.
      No matter what, you have inspired me to do more research! :) Cuirassier armor was one of the harder subjects for me to research for the video. I will get back to you!

      @@alaskancosmic3012 arms and armor of the English civil war by Royal Armouries has a good bit about the topic. They have several suits displayed and the host discusses each in turn. Highly recommend for a crash course on cuirassier.
      Also, earlier plate armor WAS ineffective against firearms, that's why they became so widespread. But people with a bit more money still wanted protection, so the metal became thicker and tougher, but it was a question of what you can afford. I could go on and on, but the video does a better job than my wall of text.

      Hey! So I took a look at that video you recommended and another video I found. Thank you for directing me to it! I really enjoyed the video and I learned a LOT more about how armor faired against firearms! You are right, armor was made thicker to deflect musket balls, which made it heavier and more expensive. I will pin your comment so others can read our full discussion! Thank you again for your input! :)

    If they want better detail rather than the visuals, put modifiers for pierce, blunt, and slash damage. That's where the difference in armors shine. Not their total level of protection but the specific form of attack protection.

    • @alaskancosmic3012
      @alaskancosmic3012  Год назад +31

      Very true, in-game mechanics that judge armor on a linear level of protection is a shared unrealistic detail across most video games. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one such game that, in my opinion, successfully improved on that. And it would be cool if Magistu did that, but that would take a lot of time to create and balance and apply to a game that doesn't inherently have that mechanic.
      Armor Penetration somewhat remedies this, piercing weapons like the Estoc and crushing weapons like the Warhammer have this stat. Not entirely accurate but I applaud him for the effort :)

    • @KopperNeoman
      @KopperNeoman Год назад +4

      I think Dragon's Dogma is a cool example of how you can combine fantasy and reality on this matter.
      Certain enemies and armour pieces have different resistances to slashing and crushing damage, but there's still a base defence value involved. (And your characters' defence counts for double your armour's defence values)

    Gothic armor would be more useful against slashing enemies as it curtails smooth motion on the blade whereas knight armor (plate or full plate) is better against piercing as it offers no flutes that would provide sticking points.

    I didn't see this mentioned in the comments that I could see, so I wanted to mention a couple of important notes. First, steel smelts faster than normal - you can get 20 iron ingots converted to steel ingots instead of just 8 per piece of coal/charcoal.
    More importantly, on hard mode (and I assume hardcore as well), zombies and skeletons often wear rusted variants of armor and likewise have their own weapons. This makes them far more dangerous than usual. I also saw plenty of piglins, both living and zombified, using golden weapons and shields. So, just something to keep in mind! Personally, I like the change, but I thought it was worth bringing up.

    wow, this mod is quite impressive. one note i have is that the flame-bladed zweihander is wavy for more reasons than just cosmetic. the flamberge (wavy-ness of a sword) is supposed to function like a saw, allowing you to do more damage as you drag the blade along their flesh, or stab into them and drag it out. it would work like a gardening saw on a plank.

      okay as an actual person who uses a flamberge in HEMA I can tell you that it is none of the above. A major factor in why it is flame shaped is because it looks cool and landsknechts were very obviously very fashion-focused. Otherwise, it is similar to other types of curved blades in that the curves may help in cutting through stuff.

    Hey everyone! Thanks to @Fistfullofboomstick, I have learned a lot more about Cuirassier Armor! Typical armor from the Middle Ages (approximately 500 AD to 1500 AD) wouldn't have been effective for protecting against firearms. But in the 16th century, Cuirassiers wore nearly full armor protection that was made *thicker* and of higher quality steel to better deflect projectiles from firearms! But this also made it heavier and increased its cost. Due to the weight and cost, in the 17th century Cuirassiers discarded their limb protection and kept helmets and cuirasses (breastplate). Underneath the cuirass they wore a Buff Coat, a thick leather jacket that protected against swords (similar in function to Gambeson)! The Cuirassier Armor in Epic Knights depicts the Cuirassier Armor that used a Buff Coat in place of steel plates for the limbs. Thank you again @Fistfullofboomstick!!! :D

    I think my favorite armor I ever made was using the 3-8 chain pattern with spot-welded links and a leather strip cinch. Worn with oilskin "shirt" it was fairly light ( roughly 105 lbs distributed over a 5'11 male frame of slender build ( 145 at the time ) much more versatile than any scale or higher durability mail. Also with the 3-8 pattern and welded-closed 16-gauge links you are not piercing it easily. Sold the piece for exponentially more than cost and labor..

    As a HEMA practictioner, a decently balanced longsword of that type can more easily perform plays of sword in 1 hand compared to longer variants
    ALSO--a common misconception, even among experts (it was only last year that i learned of this too), is that the "Claymore" is actually a one-handed basket hilted sometimes single edged sword.
    This two handed one would be the "broadsword". A safer way i like to use for naming it is "Gaelic Greatsword/Broadsword"

    About bulletproffness I would like to add that there were rondaches(also called rotellas or rodelas) particularly in the xvi century that were entirely made of steal used mainly by officers during sieges to protect themselves from enemy sharpshooters. They usually carried bulletproof armor as well, so, why the rotella too? you may ask. Well the thing is that there were three categories of armor at the time: non proofed, pistol proofed, and arquebus/caliver proofed; but there was no armor that could stand a musket shoot at close range. Theese versions of the rotella were to heavy to properly fight with them in close combat, so that's why non proofed rondaches were widespread too

    Shields are defensive weapon that can be also used offensively. You can hit oponent with them quite effectively, depending on the type of shield. They were used to block projectiles and melee atacks, but also to cover your attacking hand with the weapon from injury. It could be implemented like the knockback resistance while wielding a shield. I would kinda like to see this features added. But mainly i would love to see compatibility of this mod with some resource packs like JohnSmithLegacy or Conquest.

      No, I don't think you can breed the humans in the Human Companions mod. You find them naturally spawning throughout the world living in their own houses!

    Funny thing about surgoats is that they kinda started the entire plate armor fad as knights would plates to its inside for protection in a early brigaden style. And would kick start europes interest in plate armor.

    I will let you guys know, if you have curseforge as an app, please uninstall it.
    That shit is a crpytominer, i only visited their google page and they took 500mb of my memory within a second, even tho everything was loaded in.
    If you ever get a mod from there and your PC runs slow, get rid of the mod, and if that dont work, well, just reset to factory your PC.
    someone should really sue curseforge for cryptomining without the user's consent bruh, they taking basically money from me.
