  • In todays episode, Mark and John head to the skullhill archery shop in Okeechobee, FL to test a bunch of bows. The goal was to shoot them without knowing too much about them, and tell you all about how they feel, how they draw and how they shoot. This is a minimal editing, honest to god, no BS, straight shooting bow review. You might be surprised by which ones I liked best!

    Honestly I would shoot all bows with the same stabilizers and sights on them!
    This gives a better sense of what the bow would do and weigh without the quiver and accessories.

    Athens has been making GREAT bows for a long time. The fit, finish, performance and CS is fantastic. I believe my first one was a Exceed 300 in 2009, had many others since. Still have one that i shoot for target. Only reason i do not shoot Athens for hunting is I had shoulder surgery, went to 50lbs so i bumped up to a Xpedition. Same feel, but 17 FPS faster that I needed with my 600 grain arrow. I will praise the things Athens is doing and has been doing for a long while though, nothing but love for that company.
    It's been quite some time now, but I had 2 buddies that were Lifetime mathews shooters that now shoot Athens. If you don't choose by name or what "others" tell you, Blind folded 9 of 10 will pick Athens over Mathews. 100% truth.....Or really several other bow brands before Mathews. Mathews bows really don't feel that good to most, many buy simply on brand recognition. hats off to Mathews on that...can't fault them.

    • @SwampNStomp
      @SwampNStomp  2 года назад

      Couldn’t agree more. The Matthew’s is a great bow, but that Athens is pure sexiness. There ain’t enough time in a day to shoot every great bow in his shop. I needa go back and shoot some more. I’ll be sure to add the xpedition to the list next time. Thanks for watching! -Mark

    • @michaelrosa5410
      @michaelrosa5410 2 года назад +1

      Hoyt is not sold @ this shop unfortunately ,because this is a true archery shop, and where Hoyt is sold @ Gator, is a gun shop with new Hoyt's that are 3 year + old left overs. Mark is 100% Athens. Looked like a nice bow, like Athens always are. The big issue for me is ease with cam lean and Athens hasn't incorporated anything that I could see like PSE has to assist with this. PSE looked tops to me. I can't see me selling my 32 EVL to get the 33 even though 33 is the axle I prefer. I'm thinking Ventum Pro 33 80 pounds. But I want to see how the shims are on these. I'm hearing they set up offset ? I need to see how this looks for practicality. Actually it's too late for a new bow this year.

    Another bow that I shot this year was the inline 33. Very nice in the hand, draw cycle was harsh in the way you describe the bear. Would have bought the inline 33 if the draw cycle was better, ended up with v3x 33 70# @ 30.5 draw.

    Great video and done exactly right!!! Luv the look on your face when you drew a bow you knew nothing about and it fit you. Go without expectations and be open minded. Bows are not guns as in if you have even a cheaper gun and it’s sighted in you’ll most likely be able to at least get it on target. A bow NEEDS to fit you and everyone’s different. I guided in IA for 8yrs and we took roughly 12-15 clients a week and when you went on porch at night where everyone’s bows were hangin there would be 80-90% Mathews hangin. Me being a Hoyt shooter my whole archery career (30+yrs now) thought man I’m missing out on something clearly!!! So I went to a dealer and picked one off rack and immediately it wasn’t for me. Easily the most uncomfortable feeling bow I’ve ever held. Tried to shoot it in the do watcha preach to others and I struggled with the draw cycle. That was 15yrs ago and I’m actually in the market again for a new bow and watching RUclips incessantly trying to get some opinions. Once again I want to LIKE the Mathews cuz they are clearly one of the most innovative in the industry. Once again I grabbed one off shelve and had same reaction as before. Now me being a Hoyt man logic would state an RX7 or Ventum right. I tried the VX3, Ventum, RX7, Prime Inline 1 and 5, PSE Omen, Bowtech sr350 and cp28 some felt great some didn’t. I disliked the Mathews and the RX7. The Prime was nice but didn’t do it for me and neither did the Omen. The 3 tops were sr350,cp28 and the Hoyt Ventum. I ended up to my surprise with the Bowtech CP28. Reasons were the combination of compact package that still has speed. Also I live up here in Maine and in December it get colder then hell and with the Bowtech I will shoot it in performance mode most of the season and come late season will put it in comfort mode for easier draw. I put a TR Hot Wire sight that has a floating pit for the third pin and what I’ve found is the 2nd pin turns into my twenty in comfort and use different marks for floater allowing a little longer shots but in late season I trim that down too. Early season I’m ok out to 45-50 on clear standing shots but late season due to cold and being much harder to shoot being that into 30yds. I shoot 28” draw, 71lb pull, 28” arrow weighting 475gr and I’m getting 275-280fps on performance mode and 265-268 comfort. Everyone’s different try them ALL!!!

    Curious as to speed with 500 plus grain arrows

    • @SwampNStomp
      @SwampNStomp  2 года назад

      That’s gonna depend on drawing the and poundage. There’s calculators online you can use to estimate speed.

      They were all set to the same draw length. I do tend to be more comfortable with a longer draw length than most people with my wingspan might shoot but to each their own 🤷‍♂️
