Please get a paperback of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell Dr Chase, Piranesi is lonely, it just told me! 🥺🤭 Me at L: Le Guin, Le Guin, Le Guin, can't wait! 🤭 Le Guin collection 🤩 Dr Chase please get a paperback of Fire and Blood, it's feeling left out by not being there! 🤭 Patrick Rothfuss 🥳 Gradually approaching T for Tolkien...can't wait, can't wait, can't wait! Tolkien 🤩 Tad Williams 🥳 We have to read the next series (The Last King of Osten Ard) and discuss it Dr Chase some time, 2024 is the final book release! The writing is 👌 and anyone who likes ASOIAF, this one is as good or (according to my mom) much better! Beautiful collection. Thanks for bearing with my comments as I watched. P.S. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell copy, Dr Chase, please! Especially for Mr Norell, has a library, hates parties, just wants to sit at home and read! 🤣
Your shelves look great 😁 and as a history lover, I love to see your histoeical books/myths/legends on the shelves together with everything else like that and not to forget alt of the Icelandice and old norhs (a fav. part of history for me)
Yes! It was a Dark Tower easter egg, imagine reading and realizing King is referencing your exact location, alas no abandoned lot but your apartment building. I think he used that corner because of the famous Italian restaurant across the street, The Palm.
What an awesome new space!! And all your own. Good for you 🙂 Love the wall art/cover. Nice to see so many old school mass market fantasy paperbacks. Makes me feel less alone in my middle-aged-ness haha. That's the same Narnia set I got in the late 70s as a kid. After that came The Hobbit, and I've been a lost cause ever since. I have 17 editions of The Hobbit in 6 or 7 languages, including the rare "lion" cover. My brother is in Italy right now. I was like, don't come home empty handed haha.
Love that you have Butler and Delaney! I know your TBR is probably ten miles long, but I'd be curious to know what you think about Bloodchild and Dhalgren if you ever get around to it. Excited for your new space, Philip! It looks great. Thanks for sharing!
What a wonderful space! I've been meaning to put together a place like this in my home, though it's a bit difficult to wrangle the time to do so, and the location to do it in (as I'm sure you're aware, lol). I love the selection--it's always great to see someone else's collection!
Thank you! Yes, it was a serious time commitment, and now I'm behind on other things, but in the end it was worth it. I hope you'll be able to build your perfect space!
Todd here. Hey Philip, I loved your bookshelf tour. You have quite the collection. That Price of Power book seems interesting I read the syopsis for it on goodreads. Your other Mideval books are nice to see as well.
I read Tigana back when I was borrowing everything from the library, but I do plan to reread it and read much more GGK someday for the channel. Cheers!
Looking great! I enjoyed your book tour. My books are arranged according to two principles, one mine and one my husband's. Believe me, that was a hard agreement to arrive to 😂 I want them arranged according to their belonging to the same series, in reading order and, preferably, all books of the same author hanging out together. He likes them arranged according to aesthetics, colors and sizes (I distinctly remember coming home from work one day and being greeted by husband's smiling face, telling me how my books had been messy but now they are finally ordered and that he had worked the entire day to re-order them. According to size. My Malazan books starting with Fall of Light and then Dust of Dreams, and so on, a complete mess. I felt like throwing a fit of rage, but he was so happy about what he had done for me, so instead I silently grabbed them one by one and I began to re-arrange them 😂.That was a really close one, could have ended in a crime of passion :P ) So my books are currently arranged according to a compromise between our two needs. Therefore, Abercrombie neighbors Sarah J Mass' Throne of Glass by virtue of them being mostly white (at least the first), and so on. The fancy edition ones all cluster together for being the prettiest. By the way, have you tried reading Sarah J Mass? I read Throne of Glass and the Court of Thorns and Roses, both series. The first book in Throne of Glass was, according to me, pretty bad. However, the series got increasingly better to the point that it managed to surprise me and even squeeze some tears before the end. Not only was it very enjoyable by the time it was over, but I appreciated her journey, from a first book i thought to be a disaster to a series that I enjoyed a lot (sorry, book reviewing is your job, not mine 😁) And I see you didn't say anything about your Doctor Fantasy sign over there. It was the best item on display. ;)
Those are some complex book arrangement, Claudia! I am glad that you have found a peaceful resolution to the issue. The Doctor Fantasy sign is, of course, essential! 😁
Beautiful shelf, Philip. Lots of really awesome editions. Lots that i wish i had already read but eager that i get that chance for my first reads soon! Now that im done my first read through Malazan Book of the Fallen, i feel a sense of freedom opened up to some of those now. Looking forward to your final book at some point here.
Thank you, Christopher! I did a bookshelf tour a couple years ago, when my books were scattered all over the house. Most of them still are, but now all the fantasy books are in one place, at least!
This is a reader’s shelf. Motley collection of mass market, trade paperback, hardcover, Amazon print on demand….followed by a higher tier of leatherbound classics. Interesting that Janny Wurts is the only series you have collected in a proper trade hardcover format. My shelfs used to look much like yours. However, I mainly read on Kindle now, which has allowed me to eliminate all paperbacks. I now have a way too large collection of display hardcovers lol. But I have learned that reading the intellectual work, is a different hobby than collecting a physical object. Book collecting and reading are odd, in that there is a crossover, and people get angry and snooty when they are not 100% aligned.
I'm not much of a collector, truth be told, but I do love books as objects. I am toying with the idea of trying a Kindle reader, but I haven't reached that decision yet. Cheers!
A most excellent book collection Dr Chase! I want to encourage you to bump "Parable of the Sower" up on your read-next list. I highly recommend it as it is an amazingly prophetic story, while the same time a very sobering view of what our society may be in store for. If your have read the "The Road" by by Cormac McCarthy, I would venture that it is even more realistic in what a we could, unfortunately, be lurching towards.
Really love the new setup. I like your style Phillip but I really enjoy your more candid and relaxed approach when talking books. The way you talk about books when on live streams is way more charismatic and interesting. You see a bit of that whenever you actually start your book shelf tour. Anyway, just a bit of criticism but still enjoy your channel.
I see that your family (should we stress "wife"?) has banished you to the nether regions. But you display remarkable resilience by the way you transformed the cellar corner in which you were placed. Very nice
I really like the new view. Now you just need some Christmas lights bordering the shelves and you're all set. Your book cover looks great there as well. Have you considered getting it done in actual stained glass? After a cursory glance at etsy out of curiosity it looks like a custom piece like that would be $400~$500, but it would look so awesome.
It seems fitting that a professor would organize his books by alphabetical order. :P It honestly looks great with the poster perfectly matching the color of your walls! I'm glad you'll be more comfortable filming videos, I would have done the same (us book nerds can't resist bookshelves anyways! ☺️).
Thank you! Yes, I’m really happy that the colors my cover artist picked match my basement colors - otherwise I’d have a paint job ahead of me. 😁 All the best, and happy reading!
Awesome, Professor! Very excited to be among the first to talk to you from your new recording set-up! 😃I have just ordered «Bold Ascension» by Mr. Vaughn Roycroft, so I am also very much looking forward to your discussion with him!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Awesome! Will send you some questions for our chat soon! BTW: I found the original inspiration of Asterix and Obelix, the painting "Goths traversant une rivière"/"Goths cross a river" by Evariste-Vital Luminais!
Ayyyy, I love the new background! Looks so much better than my own XD I'm so excited to have discussions with you in the new background too; always love seeing shelves in calls with folks! ...and I'll choose to ignore my book OCD for now :p
I love that your library is a-z just like the library! I love the poster position too. Your paint color looks the one I used in my old apt on 46th Street & 2nd Avenue, Benjamin Moore Confederate Red. I hope you read Daughter of the Empire, or did you already? I think that book one is perfection but the next two not so much. It gets very serialized with danger/ rescue scenarios, reminds me of the Outlander novels.
Thank you, Heidi! I have not yet read Daughter of the Empire. It sounds like you live or used to live in Manhattan, which is an hour from where we live. Cheers!
Your new setup looks great! I used to alphabetize my books, but i gave up on that a few years ago when my bf built me a bookcase that looks like a castle door. It's so cool. I wish i could include a picture in the comments.
Thanks for the bookshelf tour! Do you have any leads for buying trade paperback or hardcovers of Malazan? Seems like you can only buy used copies at super high prices.
My pleasure! I bought the few Malazan trade paperbacks I own used, but it was around a decade ago or more, before they became scarce. I wish Tor would print more!
I just saw your latest video on your bookshelf tour. You have a nice space there. I haven't looked at your videos in a while but I am subscribed to your channel, so I check out what you've posted from time to time. While you were going through your bookshelves I noticed that there are two authors that I've read that were not on your bookshelves. Oh, by the way, you have read more fantasy than I have. Anyway, the first author is Stephen R. Lawhead. He has written a lot of books but one series in particular may fit your interests. It is "The Bright Empires" series which consists of five books. These are "The Skin Map," "The Bone House," "The Spirit Well," "The Shadow Lamp," and "The Fatal Tree." I really enjoyed this series, especially the switch in time frames from different epochs in the past to the present. Another author that I really like is Iain Pears. He has written several different books in different genres. All of his books are excellent. He wrote a fantasy book entitled "Arcadia" which I also really enjoyed. There is a Tolkien link in the book. You might want to check them out. Thanks; Greg.
Very nice collection. I'm sure Joruman wouldn't mind looking through it more carefully! 😀 (No spoilers, please, I'm only around 70% of the first book.🙃)
Thank you, Mitriel! No doubt Joruman would love so many books, though I daresay he’d prefer my history books and old college textbooks over the fiction. 😁 I’m delighted to hear that you’re 70% through, and I hope your writing is going wonderfully!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Thank you! It was a slow process getting back to it (the full time job doesn't help), but I had some great ideas recently which makes me very excited to continue with the story. Wishing you all the best and I'm sure I'll be posting my little review of TWOE in the near future! 😁
A lovely, even enviable setup, Philip. And a wonderful personal library, to boot. It was fun to see you’ve got a couple of the Library of America Le Guin volumes; Brian Attebery (the editor) is on my dissertation committee. (He also wrote the foreword to that edition of Worm Ouroboros, a book I need to reread.) I must say I was a bit surprised to not see any Lord Dunsany on there. He was a contemporary of Eddison and, as you know, Le Guin was a huge fan. I would also mention Hope Mirrlees in that same breath :) Btw, if I were to read just one of Morris’s prose romances, what three titles would you recommend I choose from? I’m interested in the roots of modern fantasy (see my comments about Dunsany, Eddison, and Mirrlees), and I’ve known Morris’s name for a long time but never have read anything by him and hear little about specific titles to consider. Maybe someday we should record a discussion on the broad overview of fantasy’s development, from MacDonald to Tolkien and Le Guin, down to the 90s, when the genre truly hit the mainstream? Questions for later :)
Cheers, Paul! In regard to Morris, it's hard to choose, but I'll go with one of the more early prose romances more rooted in historical fiction, The House of the Wolfings, and two of the straight up fantasies, The Wood Beyond the World and The Well at the World's End. That conversation on the development of fantasy would be awesome, and we should include AP!
Looks terrific, and the shelves are great, but Dr Fantasy label is too far away, it should be front and centre! Love the poster with you cover as well! Everything looks so orderly in your shelf, that's great -- mine is a mess of horizontal and vertical arrangements meant to maximise occupation xD American Gods! Your edition is far more battered than my second-hand one D: In any case, it's a lovely space! Congrats!

We are very much in the same boat . . . if a boat could have bookshelves. 😁
I love the space! 🎉
Those Robin Hobb editions are triggering me 😂
Thank you, and sorry about the mismatched Hobb collection!
Hello 👋
Beautiful bookshelves, I love the arrangement according to alphabetical order.
Please get a paperback of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell Dr Chase, Piranesi is lonely, it just told me! 🥺🤭
Me at L: Le Guin, Le Guin, Le Guin, can't wait! 🤭
Le Guin collection 🤩
Dr Chase please get a paperback of Fire and Blood, it's feeling left out by not being there! 🤭
Patrick Rothfuss 🥳
Gradually approaching T for Tolkien...can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!
Tolkien 🤩
Tad Williams 🥳 We have to read the next series (The Last King of Osten Ard) and discuss it Dr Chase some time, 2024 is the final book release!
Ha ha! I think Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell certainly deserves a place on my shelves, and an honored one at that. Cheers, Paromita!
I like it !!!😀
Thank you!
What an amazing space. Looks really good!
Thanks so much, Dan!
Your shelves look great 😁 and as a history lover, I love to see your histoeical books/myths/legends on the shelves together with everything else like that and not to forget alt of the Icelandice and old norhs (a fav. part of history for me)
It's impossible for me to separate my love for the sagas from my love for fantasy since the former, for me, so much informs that latter. All the best!
Yes! It was a Dark Tower easter egg, imagine reading and realizing King is referencing your exact location, alas no abandoned lot but your apartment building. I think he used that corner because of the famous Italian restaurant across the street, The Palm.
That's awesome!
So, soon you should have 18 editions of The Hobbit, the latest one in Italian. Very cool, Eddie!
Wow! Looks fantastic!
Thank you!
Huge upgrade, this is awesome!! Although, you need some plants (ones that require minimal sunlight) 😂
Thank you! Yes, some green would be good.
The new space looks great!
Thank you, Kevin!
Love that you have Butler and Delaney! I know your TBR is probably ten miles long, but I'd be curious to know what you think about Bloodchild and Dhalgren if you ever get around to it. Excited for your new space, Philip! It looks great. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, Jon!
What a brilliant new setup!
Thank you, Alex! I hope you’re doing great!
Thanks for acknowledging the very real struggle of book OCD 😂😂😂! Anyway, great set up Philip!
Ha ha! Thank you, Abel!
Todd here. Hey Philip, I loved your bookshelf tour. You have quite the collection. That Price of Power book seems interesting I read the syopsis for it on goodreads. Your other Mideval books are nice to see as well.
Thank you, Todd!
I like the new set up!! It's cozy. Nice books too, I'm surprised not to see any Guy Gavriel Kay though!
I felt like throwing a fit of rage, but he was so happy about what he had done for me, so instead I silently grabbed them one by one and I began to re-arrange them 😂.That was a really close one, could have ended in a crime of passion :P )
So my books are currently arranged according to a compromise between our two needs. Not only was it very enjoyable by the time it was over, but I appreciated her journey, from a first book i thought to be a disaster to a series that I enjoyed a lot (sorry, book reviewing is your job, not mine 😁)
And I see you didn't say anything about your Doctor Fantasy sign over there.
It will be cool to see where you go now that you’ve finished Malazan, Dan! All the best!
Your book nook looks great!
Thank you so much!
Great setup, Philip. Was this first time we've seen your collection? Looking classy!
Thank you, Christopher! I did a bookshelf tour a couple years ago, when my books were scattered all over the house. Most of them still are, but now all the fantasy books are in one place, at least!
awesome collection, plenty of these i have in my shelf as well
Thank you!
I have indeed read The Road, and I look forward to reading Parable of the Sower very much. Cheers!
I really respect your discipline in keeping the books in alphabetical order
Thank you, Andrew! It took me forever because I kept realizing I missed an author and had to reshuffle the books several times.
Great set-up! When can we expect a tour of your villainous lair that is so obviously hidden behind that set of oversized bookshelves?
Ha ha! That is super secret, rather like the Bat Cave. 😁
Very nice, my friend. Are we changing your name to Dr. Fancypants or Dr. Mancave? 😊
Ha ha ha! Well, Dr. Fantasy is a fancy fellow, what with his cape, his tweed jackets, and various accoutrements. Cheers, Nemesis!
Thank you for the kind words and the feedback!
I see that your family (should we stress "wife"?) has banished you to the nether regions. But you display remarkable resilience by the way you transformed the cellar corner in which you were placed. Very nice
Ha ha! Thank you! I’m taking my banishment very well. 😁
What a cool idea! $500 is much less than I would have expected. Perhaps I’ll look into it. Cheers!
Thank you, MacScarfield! The chat with Vaughn will be out on Tuesday!
@@MacScarfield Very cool!
This looks really good! Congrats! Now if you can just convince your nemesis to show us his new set up also. Cheers!
Thank you, Jacob! I think the Nemesis will need some time, but I'm sure he will eventually come up with something diabolically cool.
Worm of Ouroboros!! Started that a while ago, there’s some stylized prose if there’s ever been any
To be honest, I didn’t love it. The prose is a bit too stylized even for me!
Fantasy heaven!
I’m also one to have different sized editions 🙈
That’s because you’re wise, Al! 😁
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy 😆
Ayyyy, I love the new background! Looks so much better than my own XD
I'm so excited to have discussions with you in the new background too; always love seeing shelves in calls with folks!
...and I'll choose to ignore my book OCD for now :p
Thank you, KC! I look forward to our discussions very much!
A castle door bookcase sounds awesome! Cheers, Amanda!
Looks like your family banished you to the dungeon. Dr. Fantasy’s dungeon of madness. Wish I had one of those.
The dungeon is the place to be! 😁
I don’t know you. RUclips send me this as a random option, and the thumbnail caught my attention. Very beautiful set up 👌🏾❤
Thank you, Jackson! It’s nice to meet you!
Thank you, Greg! I appreciate your recommendations very much, and I hope you’re enjoying your reading. All the best!
@@MitrielFaywood I look forward to the review and to eventually getting to read your second book in the series!
I didn't know I had book OCD until I saw your shelves ;) . So many good books though.
Ha ha! Cheers, Dustin!
A lovely, even enviable setup, Philip. And a wonderful personal library, to boot. It was fun to see you’ve got a couple of the Library of America Le Guin volumes; Brian Attebery (the editor) is on my dissertation committee. (He also wrote the foreword to that edition of Worm Ouroboros, a book I need to reread.)
I must say I was a bit surprised to not see any Lord Dunsany on there. He was a contemporary of Eddison and, as you know, Le Guin was a huge fan. I would also mention Hope Mirrlees in that same breath :)
Btw, if I were to read just one of Morris’s prose romances, what three titles would you recommend I choose from?
Congrats!
Ha ha! Yes, I’ve read that copy of American Gods at least five times, but the real damage came when my older daughter read it. Thank you, Livia!
