Sofa (Djembe & Dunun Demo)

This is a special rhythm for the warriors. In the history of the Malinke there were many wars among the tribes. Sofa would be played before the war for the warriors on horseback. It would also be played after the war for those who won. Originally, Sofa was played with an instrument called Bolon, which is a me- lodic instrument made from a round calabash and 3 cords. The sound of the Bolon is comparable to the contrabass. The Bolon would be played by griots who knew the history of the warriors and had also sung praises of the wars and warriors for generations. Sofa is no longer played in the villages because there are no more celebrations for warriors. Famoudou Konate and Mamady Keïta teach Sofa so its story and tradition are not forgotten .
