- Chinese President Xi Jinping is meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris Monday as part of a multi-day trip across Europe, his first since the pandemic. It's expected they'll discuss efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine. CBS News foreign correspondent Elaine Cobbe has more.

The war in Ukraine only takes a small part of their negotiation (even less than the war in Gaza) and the Chinese side didn’t specifically mention Russia in their press conference at all. but all US media can see is “talking about RUSSIA!”

Actually NATO leaders trying to force China to pressure Russia to stop the war is a silly effort. Firstly because China and Russia are both sovereign countries which do not take orders from anyone. And also because China and Russia are neighbouring countries, they will never want to unnecessarily aggravate each other for no good reason. Currently China and Russia have the best bilateral relations with each other and it just doesn't make any sense for China to rock that boat for western interests.

That would be crazy. China is the leader of the BRICS not the G7. Xi's goal is to continue to grow the GDP of the BRICS which is already larger than that of the G7. Xi is happy to see the G7 waste billions on another useless forever war. That weakens them. Then, as he did in Afghanistan, when that war ended, he can swoop in and make beneficial deals for China after the West tires of its folly and makes peace in Ukraine.
