Repairing My $1000 GMC 3500! What A DEAL!

  • I got this truck for $1000 because the transmission would not shift out of 2nd gear. I drove it home from the boston area in 2nd gear, it took nearly 5 hours! But one I got it home, I learned that a 4l80e had been swapped in, and thats why it was stuck in 2nd gear, a 1989 does not have the electrics to run a 4l80e! So I install an aftermarket kit.

flight2k5 Your not talking about a 454 are you? I have 1 in a 3/4ton regular cab and my dad has 2 in 3/4ton extra cabs and they will all go 0-60 in under 10 seconds with a 4000 lb camper in the box. Towing an 18 foot 10,000lb gwvr deck over they will all get up to 60 in about 10-13 seconds depending when you get on it. These motors are not gutless by any means. Towing a 7000lb travel trailer we can walk it up the coq in bc at 75 mph and still have room to accelerate. All 3 of our motors are stock, nothing has been done to the trucks.

This thing was a phenomenal deal. I feel like you could sell it up here for way more than you paid. Oh then you said that in the video. That said, I say you undercoat the hell out of it, coat inside any panels you can with Bar & Chain and wax, and keep this thing for a long while! Won't go down in value as long as it doesn't rust out.
Crazy that little computer cost almost as much as the truck, hah. Such is car modding. If you ever need some wiring help HMU too I'm fairly handy. If you nicked those TPS wires, make sure you seal them up or moisture will creep in fast. Awesome fix! Seems to shift pretty smooth too. Glad you found a solution.

I’m not getting rid of my truck but I bet you’d have her in pristine shape, I do what I can being that I’m disabled and on a limited income. She’s a 2001 Chevy Suburban 2500 LT Autoride 4x4 with the 6.0 with 246,000 miles n her, it’s not perfect but I’m impressed how well she’s held for her age and mileage, also she’s a southern truck so the frame and body are beautiful

I would keep it, if I were you. Besides being a great body style and paint color, those TBI engines are hard to kill. You've also got big block torque, 4wd, and now overdrive w/lockup.
Saw some rust when you crawled under the truck. Wire-wheel, rust incapsulator, undercoating, and internal frame coating in the rockers/cab corners will help keep this truck from deteriorating.

New plugs, wires, cap, and rotor will help with both fuel milage, and easier starting. Definitely look into transmission pan drop, and new filter/fluid for it. Who knows what that transmission lived out it's other life like. And sometimes when something gets thrown together, it isn't done the proper way(as you learned from that chevy turd you sold off). A trans cooler is a fine idea as well, plus a new thermostat for the 454. I had an 89 suburban 3/4 ton with the 7.4 /th 400 combo. That thing screamed on the highway with only 3 gears in it, but it never left me stranded.

Awesome score on the truck only needing a tcu, especially up in the rust belt. My dad had an 89 3500 chevy back in the 80’s. It had a th400 that went out and we looked at swapping a 4l80e into it but at the time that trans was so new no one knew how to make it work and their were no aftermarket tcu like you bought so he just stuck with the th400. He wanted to put a hear vendor od in it but could never justify the major expenditure.

When cleaning up wiring please run everything thru the firewall, consider either wiring loom or tape on wires above radiator support. Second make a wiring diagram noting only the changes you made. Both will help you either keeping it or selling it.

I’m not sure if you will read this, but the climate control on my 1993 is the same dash module as the one you have in your 89. The plug in the back dislodges from the unit, breaking the electrical contact and goes completely dark and didn’t work like yours. I fixed it by disassembling part of the dash bezel and pulling the unit out and cleaning the electrical contacts on the back and at the plug, then applying a light coat of dielectric grease on the contacts and placing some closed cell foam behind the plug, up in the dash behind the unit, lightly allowing it to push on the plug to keep it in place back there and reinstalling. I haven’t had a problem in 3 years since. I hope this helps. Enjoy your new truck. Keep her runnin...

*now to keep from catching something on fire or burning up your TCM module you need to wire loom all of those extra wires to keep them out of the fan and the belt path and run the connector for the TCM through a hole through the firewall not down the fender like you have it because while the way you have it now does work it will eventually chaffe the wires and short out or burn up everything and then all that work and all that savings is gone away. it's a nice truck specially for all the more money you have in it. and if you get it right that 4L80E can last you a REALLY long time but put the TCM module connector through the firewall and in a rubber grommet that you can get for like $1.00 or less from any parts store. it's just the sensible and right way to do things*

Yes! Glad this channel showed up on a recommended from RUclips. LOVE watching people turn and flip vehicles. You're doing great. Had a Suburban with a blown up 4L60E, but the truck was nice and the engine ran good. Did the reverse trans swap though, went from a 4L60E to an earlier cable shift 700R4. Used a GPS for a speedometer, but it shifted just fine. Drove it for a few trips and then sold it for more than was invested it in total.
Northern California doesn't have many people, so cars around here usually don't come cheap. Downfall of moving to a remote location. Central Indiana always had a huge variety of cars for sale cheap. But, have come across a few good deals since moving here.. Like a $1000 1986 BMW 325 2 door 5 spd. A $250 2001 Camaro T-tops, Auto 3.8 V6 that only needed the plastic (now aluminum) elbows from the intake to water junction block. Painted it with a roller and some rustoleum for the $100 roll on special, looked awesome in black. Traded that car, $500 and a motorized 2 stroke bicycle for a 1973 Mustang. Most recently a $200 2003 Toyota Prius fixed the brakes, wheel bearing, HID (now LED) headlights, girl ran it out of gas and was going to send it to the junkyard, gave her $200 and paid $50 for a tow bill home. Replaced 2 of the hybrid battery cells this week after getting the red triangle of death. Works great again now though. Fuel is expensive around here, so it's nice having a cheap beater gas saver. Anyhow, I'm rambling. Great work, I'm staying tuned.

Totally clean this truck up I know it’s a work truck but these things are so beautiful you should definitely buff and wax the paint . Maybe respray the rims re do all the chrome . I would love to turn this thing clean like the day it left the dealer
