Yes, my favourite Star Wars character here is correct. Going in as blind as possible is always best! When I go the cinema, I have earphones in and play music through the trailers.

If anyone asks me for the most realistic example of crying in a movie, I point them to every time Matt Damon cries or gets choked up in this film. Amazing acting.
That is what has always stuck in my mind from this movie. Off the top of my head best crying is this, Leo's flashback at the end of Shutter Island, and as for not really crying but best scream of sadness and horror I guess, Karl Urban's scream at the end of the battle of Pelennor Fields in Return of the King. Those always make me choke up
Tom Hanks at the end of Captain Phillips always gets me.
Also, when he comes out of cryo sleep in Interstellar...
The script first had him cry, but Matt and Ridley took it out because they thought it was too cheesy. When they filmed it Matt had been filming alone for so long that he genuinely became emotional when he heard the other actors and decided the first script was right.
Oh, he wasn't acting. They actually took him there and left him on Mars! LOL
You like the little Lord of the Rings references they put in the movie especially when Boromir was attending both secret meetings 😂
Had me rolling at 10:00 when you said "were all left...curiosity" right before he finds the pathfinder rover. Curiosity is the name for a different mars rover so you were almost unintentionally correct.

appreciate the planet we have, cause there are no others like it that we can get to.
Which is still pointless...because even if we took perfect care of this one...even if we optimized it to perfection...it's doomed.
We should properly take care of it, and ourselves, absolutely...
But we need to prioritize finding a practical way to get to other star systems above all else.

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 Honestly I'm not really sure about the likelihood of going to other planets. By the time it's practical to do so, it may well simply be a better idea to colonise space itself with habitats. I don't have enough background to be very sure about that though.
@@WJS774unless we develop some type of faster than light speed technology, we are stuck with space habitations. Also unless we develop much, much faster rocket technology, we are stuck with Earth, it’s moon, and Mars.
@@pmpowaliszwell, push comes to shove, we could use Jupiter and Saturn’s moons as well for some colonisation, but yeah, that’d be our biggest challenge:

Amazing to me is that there is about 1/3 of the book which is not in the film. The book is incredible. Written by Andy Weir.

@@dsmdgold I don't think it was about being mean to Watney. It was more that, once you cast people to play all the other characters in the story, you kinda have to give them something to do. And that eats up some runtime. I'd rather they hadn't done that. I'd at least like to have had the dust storm included. At least film it for the home-release, if you're worried about cinema goers. Studios are always trying to cut the runtime for the cinema release, unless it's an installment in an established franchise. They have faith that a nerd would watch Batman's origin story being told for the 50th time, in a 5 hour movie. but for an original movie, they think people can't handle paying attention for more than 2 hours.
@@ashscott6068 I was thinking specifically of some of the major obstacles in the novel that the movie dropped. There is of course the dust storm, but also Watney shorting out the Pathfinder probe and losing contact with NASA and rolling the rover on his way to Schiaparelli.
Obviously they didn't have time for all of that and the obstacle they chose to remove were probably the best ones to remove. I do think that every non-Watney scene in the movie was essential to tell the story, so no problem with them taking time for that, although I would have liked to see some reference to the cannibalism plan the crew of the Hermes came had to make sure someone survived if the resupply mission failed.

They cast Sean Bean on purpose. Must have. Change my mind.
Also for the reason that if anyone heard he'd be in a movie, they would assume he would die.
I love movies where the characters are good at solving problems, and this movie has a lot of problems for the characters to solve, so this is one of my favorites. It's up there with Sneakers.

...I kind of view it as almost the same movie as The Martian, except like 75%-80% accurate to real life events.

Before compiling it as a full book the writer Andy Wier released it as a episodically on his website
Where each episode was about solving the problem of the month.
If you want more science, the book has about ten times the detail in the movie. No criticism of the movie. They would have to make a five-hour documentary with about one hour of drama to do justice to all the details in the book. But if you, or any other watcher, want to delve into the science, I recommend the book very strongly.
Smarties in Canada are a totally different type of candy. Our Smarties are small chocolate ovals that are coated in a small layer of candy and then colored. Extremely similar to M&M's. We also have those American Smarties, but we call them Rockets here in Canada.
I came to comment this. It's ironic she's eating rockets during this movie.

If you like The Martian, a show you'll probably also enjoy is The Expanse. They also take place in space and share the same way of integrating scientific accuracy to the plot, with compelling characters and writing. Authors of both are fans of each other's work and agreed, after the fact, to make their stories canon to one another. So The Expanse, where the solar system is colonized and Mars is its own nation, has Mark Watney as part of their history. It's six great seasons with a great finale, on Amazon Prime and probably my favorite show.
I second this wholeheartedly. It also has some of the greatest female character I've ever seen.

Stef, you should read the book that this film was based on. I couldn’t put it down. Looking forward to your reaction to Arrival. It’s also based on a book and is a great story like The Martian.
Within the sci-fi genre, though quite unique, don't miss the "Firefly" series, which is fantastic.
Miss Firefly. The fans never admit it was cancelled because it wasn't popular, even before Wheeton was discovered to be a creep.
Definitely Firefly! Don't listen to the detractors; watch it in proper order and you will be hooked like the rest of us.
@@Pugiron - DON'T miss it! It was cancelled because it was deliberately sabotaged by Fox execs who had zero connection to the show. Demanding a last-second new pilot episode.. episodes screened out of order.. some never screened at all.. last-minute screening cancellations in favour of some silly sports event nobody cared about.. putting it in the Friday-night 'death' slot.. they made damn sure it never had a chance to get popular to begin with.
Firefly is good, but the Expanse is far, far better in every way.
Andy Weir took ONE dramatic license with this story and it's the whole setup for it. The atmosphere on Mars is 1/10th as thick on Earth, so the "force" of the wind is only 10% as intense. You'd have to have well over supersonic wind speeds for it to do anything close to tipping the mav, or ripping satellite antenna's off. Once we get beyond that moment everything else is staggeringly well researched and really based in solid science fact.
Also, I watched the movie and cried... And then I had a hard time reading the book through all the crying. Andy is really good.
So from behind the scenes interview I saw when you see him slip on the floor and he says oh I'm okay he actually did slip in real life and he stayed in character and let it continue rolling

This is such a great movie with a great cast.
First of all, there’s never just one trailer for a movie. There’s almost always a minimum of three. Second of all trailers regularly give away way too much of the plot and any surprises there might be. So don’t watch the trailers. If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend watching Apollo 13. It’s a true story about space travel. and it has a lot of big-name actors! Very much worth it. 💙💙💙
One of the things I like about this movie is...
a lot of movies are about the Noble Hero sacrificing himself for the collective, for the mythical "greater good"...
This movie was about thousands of people working around the clock, giving up the precious minutes of their lives, risking their lives, sacrificing their careers, spending billions of dollars, making unstable alliances, and millions of people, if nothing else, praying...
FOR ONE MAN.
I love that. I'll never stop loving that. It may be what wins us a galaxy (h/t Robert A. Heinlein)

6:19 : having have those kind of trauma, it's much, much easier to deal with it right after the moment you get wounded, because you barely feel any more pain.

Thank you for reminding me that "The Martian" is a great movie that I need to watch again.
Not sure if you watched the footage in the credits.
The book this movie is adapted from was written by a scientist (I cant remember his speciality but it was space-related). He wrote it as a novelisation of the scientific things that might go wrong or might occur if humans ever land on mars. As a result it is very interesting, and it goes into far more scientific detail and factual detail than you get in the movie - which is not a criticism. But, for example, the problems of travelling from the Hab to the Mav take up a lot of space in the book while they only last about 5 minutes in the movie.
The only non-scientifically correct bit in the book and the movie is the strength of the first storm, which isnt possible on Mars. But that was put in because it was the only way to kick off the events in the story and maroon one person on the planet.
I read the book in one sitting. Its a great book.
ps there is almost no air pressure on Mars, because it doesnt really have an atmosphere. As a result no heat is required to convert liquids to gas (ie boil water from a liquid form to steam). We apply heat to boil water on earth because we need to apply energy to water mostly to overcome the atmospheric pressure keeping H2O together. But if you are exposed to Mars's lack of atmosphere the liquid in your body - which is 70% of you - instantly starts to boil, even though its freezing cold (thats also why there is no free standing water on mars anymore). That will kill you in roughly 50 seconds. Its not a pleasant death and thats why we wont be walking around Mars anytime in the future.

Amazing reaction to a well made movie. The great thing about this movie is that it has action, logical thinking, and there is conflict yet no one dies and there is no villain. People work together. Thank you.

It cracks me up watching people watch this and reacting like anything that happens actually happened and is real.
And the reason that he can't call home at first is that what tore loose in the storm and hit him was the base's long-range communication dish. Not that it matters all _that_ much, even if he had been able to call them right away there wouldn't have been anything they could do, once Martinez hit the go button on the MAV, there was no going back. They didn't have another lander to go back down, or another ascent rocket.
Well, Stef, I don't know who else _I_ speak for, but I actually _envy_ the fact that you can see movies with no advance knowledge of what they're about aside from the fact that they were _popular._ That's the kind of thing that makes reactors so _popular._
The book is an excellent read too. Very close to the movie but largely written in a journal style. In the book, Dr. Beck is the one who rescues him from the MAV (He reaches in and grabs Mark and pulls him back to the Hermes). Mark _mentions_ the Ironman thing but it is not used, but it was an interesting surprise.

You should read the book. It goes into a lot of the science and problems that the movie glosses over or skips entirely. Better yet, listen to the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton.
One of my favourite films. Not that there aren't some issues of course, like the storm at the start is horribly unrealistic. Mars does have high wind speeds, but with such a thin atmosphere there's no way for a storm to be that dangerous. If you don't have that storm though the story doesn't happen, and Andy Weir just couldn't think of a better way for Mark Watney to end up stranded. And the "Iron Man" thing at the end is just silly, in the book they _joke_ about that and say that it would be a terrible idea, so of course they put it in the film. 🙄 Overall though it's good, a modern reimagination of the classic "man on a deserted island" story with no antagonist, just a struggle for survival on a planet that is inhospitable to life.
The Martian actually has some fun promo material. They basically made clips from a fake documentary about the Ares 3 mission in the early stages.
Hi Stef!😊 Going in blind not watching the trailer makes for a better reaction IMO. A SOL is almost the same as an Earth day, just about 40 minutes longer. When they are talking about Project Elrond and "The Lord of the Rings" one of the actors talking about it (Sean Bean) was actually in those films.😉 The Martian for the most part is a feel good movie about positivity and teamwork with a joint goal. Great reactions to this well made and acted film, Stef!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

I really enjoyed this move, and still do, even after finding out that the atmosphere of Mars would never have supported that wind storm.
Also, if it has not been said already, when that guy slipped getting coffee, he really did slip and they left it in because it fit the character.
5:12 if u love that background music , it is actually from his movie Alien and James Cameron movie Aliens. That exact sound is use it here like and easter egg.

To answer the trailer question:
I think it really depends on the Movie, as in, it is on a case-by-case basis. There are some movies for which the trailers spoil the entire movie, which is almostalways bad. There are some for which the trailer says basically nothing. And for some the trailers really help, as they might get people excited for a movie about a topic they've never heard about.
Love this movie. The audiobook is great and listening to that before movie was announced was cool. One of my comfort movies i watch once or more a year
Liked the book back when. Movie is also great. A friend brought something to my attention I never thought about since all movies and shows conveniently skip over it for obvious reasons. In reality gravity on Mars is actually only about a third of that of Earth's.
This film is so underrated, its a masterpiece!

Trailers ONLY IF you don't trust our judgment, or if you're split. Maybe for a Sci-fi or Fantasy but NEVER a Comedy. The trailer of Big Daddy crammed every funny moment in the trailer.
Some trailers are complimentary; Fight Club's trailer is like an extra.

I've felted like the character during covid. I was all alone, nothing to do and no one, except picking up a basket ball, guitarre on the back, leaning on the deck, litenning to the tide plowing through, front to the stars with binoculars and calculating the exact time of passage by head of the ISS, to look at it. Smoking, with some thea & trying to rationnolize the the thing. Never talked in a human being face to face for 3 or 4 weeks. It put things into perspective. Made some lifelong friends along the way. But the world needs us to survive.

Completely blind, no trailers, no posters, no plot summary, and no spoilers makes for a great reaction. I also love when reactors make wild plot guesses based solely on the title of the film, especially when they're really (hilariously) wrong, but that's just me.
Unfortunately the premise which kicks this whole thing off is not possible. Winds strong enough to knock over a spaceship are not possible on Mars.
This is a great, great film.
The author, Andy Weir, actually proposed this scenario on a space science discussion forum, and a bunch of NASA and JPL scientists jumped aboard and contributed to the discussion.
So, most of the science in this is dead-on accurate, and the science in the book is even better.
Weir did confess to fudging a few things. The atmospheric pressure on Mars is so low that even a "terrible" sandstorm, while it would make a mess, wouldn't threaten the return spacecraft and would only feel like a gentle breeze to the astronauts.
But Weir said NASA's planning is usually so comprehensive, he couldn't think of any other way to get Watney stranded.
Amusingly, Weir and the two guys who wrote the novels that became the science-fiction TV series, "The Expanse," (Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham) really like each other's books, and they hang out together when they're at the same conventions or events.
So, the three of them have an informal agreement that the events of, "The Martian" are canonical history, in "The Expanse."
he also re wrote chapters based on feedback.
A great example of this is when he is burning the hydrozene to make water.
Originally he was successful in one go until one of the people on the writers website remarked that he had not taken the oxygen in the Habs atmosphere in account.
The writer Andy Weir re did the calculations and found this would cause a problem and possibly a explosion.
And re wrote the scene to reflect that the original calculations where wrong having Mark Watney blow himself up the first time he tries it.
trailers can sometimes give too much away about the movie, so watching trailers should be on a case-by-case basis eg one of the trailers for Toys with Robin Williams is amazing and give away nothing about the film all you see is him in a field...great trailer and great film
I only just discovered your channel via Game of Thrones, but as to your opening question: personally I can't imagine watching a film without seeing all the trailers and reading every single review I could find, so we're very different. But then I don't make reaction videos. So the surprise element has to come first, as the reaction is really genuine!

Best line in the whole film is when he (watney) says " oh don't make me laugh I have broken ribs" lol as someone who has had broken ribs it always makes me laugh & reflect fondly on then I had my 3 broken ribs from the seat belt of my car after a semi ran a red light. I also had a broke shoulder & collar bone also from the seat belt & a spiral fracture of my right leg from my center console. awwww sweet memories lol.

Cool intro music. Red Planet has some similarities with the ending launch & rescue by the lady-captain.
What kept him alive was a strong desire to not die... and a sense of humor.
Interesting facts on Mars because of the very little atmosphere that there is the dust storm that you saw would not have blown them away like that what would be basically a category 5 here on Earth on Mars would be a strong Summer Breeze. It would though cause Havoc with the dust when it comes to the solar panels and seals Etc
One thing a storm like that at the beginning would never happen on mars (due to the low atmosphere) and is the artistic license to start the plot of the movie .

I hope you get to watch "Apollo 13", if you liked the "working out problems when things go south in space" you'll like the true story of what happened with one of the Moon missions. Well, dramatized somewhat but mostly factual. I was a kid watching the news as it happened back then, and I was glad Tom Hanks and crew made a great retelling of the heroic story.
Trailers are "at your own risk", sometimes they give away too much.
I havent seen this movie. After watching this, WOW do I have.
One of the ways you can tell this was written by actual engineers is the number of times the day is saved by duct tape lol

Pathfinder was launched in 1997 , Curiosity was launched in 2011.

Apollo 13!!!! The Martian and Apollo 13 are 2 of the most amazing space movies ever made. A13 is based off the actual events and uses dialogue and newscasts from that time.
Still this day I squint while watching that stitching up scene. & I am a tough guy when it comes to many such scenarios. That scene is perfection in uncomfortableness.
Andy Weir, who wrote the novel, was pretty accurate with his facts in his story. However, there was some poetic license the film used to move the story along. I suggest either reading his book or listing to it on Audiobooks to get the whole picture. I believe you'll remember the scene where Watney mentioned that it took three years of training to prepare for his mission. That's on top of his education in which he brought his expertise as a Mechanical Engineer and a Botanist to the crew and to NASA. In those three years you became part of a team. You must bring an ordered mind and you must love education. Becoming an astronaut isn't easy. And you can understand why. NASA only wants the best.
I like a good emotional reaction. This movie is exceptional in it's story and characters.
After previously playing the 'bad guy' in another space film - seeing Matt Damon redeem himself in this was most welcome. Also a win for Ridley Scott whom seems to have had a bit of trouble with his recent space movies as well.
There are few things that the script is wrong about. The first is that a storm on Mars would not be so violent. There is only a slight atmosphere on Mars so no bid storms. The second is that there is almost no weathering so the minerals are very sharp. They would lacerate the plant roots and kill them. Put those aside and it a great movie.
The movie is based on the book, and was exceptionally well-written, well-cast and lovingly shot to be a favorite of mine.

You have to watch Arrival several times to get it. It's a bit of a mind twister.
I agree on the no spoilers, no trailers, etc. But I also think having a wiki article on the film AFTERWARDS, for anything you didn't understand about the film would be fine. Understanding what you just saw, and then commenting on it, I'm all for. But only after.
I feel like going into a film with no future knowledge is best, it's the most honest.

No need to watch trailers, trailers are there to “pick” the movie you want to see… since you already know which movie you’re going to watch… you don’t need it. 😉
