    I think the whole immigrant thing with Hamilton in the play could also be because of Lin-Manuel miranda's heritage and is kind of a reference to that. Lin's family is from Puerto Rico which in technically a US territory but to everyone in the US they are seen as immigrants because they come from a culture that is associated with latin america, just like Hamilton who came from the Caribbean a place that even though was under british ruling was not considered a british culture, hence the immigrant thing.

    • @whaleymom76
      @whaleymom76 3 года назад +7

      Lin-Manuel Miranda actually talked about this. It was when they were rehearsing for the Puerto Rico run of "Hamilton" that was done to raise money for the people after the hurricane. He said that Hamilton was poor and orphaned as a child and the charity of the people in his town brought him to New York. Miranda said he grew up mostly poor in New York, the proceeds from "Hamilton" brought him wealth and fame. And now (at that time) "Hamilton" was returning to the

    Yeah, Jefferson was super fancy and rich. He tried to buy the actual Roman copy of the Venus de Milo (the original one), that’s how rich he was. He still landed with a copy because they didn’t want to sell him the original. Jefferson was just a lot.

    Anyone love aaron burr and thomas as much as hamilton? And i agree, that playing up Hamilton as a hero is a mistake on lin's part. That's why burr is the best in this musical

    • @horrorhistory7342
      @horrorhistory7342 3 года назад +4

      I don't think he really played him up as a hero. It seemed more to me that he was trying to follow Chernow's book and also sort of pushing back the century and a half of people not knowing Hamilton or straight up trying to insult him as much as possible. I actually read a couple cool essays a few weeks ago about the back and forth treatment of Hamilton throughout history.

He took 2 90 minutes periods to talk about stuff when we‘re supposed to only talk 10 minutes in our presentation wich was on free base😂)

    How do historians even make money, if I knew I'd prolly persue the field cuz I LOVE history

    • @BradyPostma
      @BradyPostma 3 года назад +10

      Usually, colleges pay them to research or teach, or museums to curate and authenticate. Sometimes they publish successful books (like Ron Chernow's Hamilton biography that the play is based on). Sometimes corporations or states or cities will hire official historians to write (flattering) histories of them. Sometimes they get rich people or organizations to pay for their research. Sometimes, art or antiques collectors will hire them to authenticate or estimate the value of a piece.
      There are probably other ways for a historian to make money, but those are the ones I know about.
      I would also like to be a career historian. I'm not, tho.

    I love the video. One thing I kinda wished he talked about was when Jefferson says at about the end of the song “The Emperor has no clothes.” I hope this isn’t something I’m supposed to know but what does that even mean. 😂 If someone could explain that to me that would be great!

    • @pillowvibes
      @pillowvibes 3 года назад +1

      Three months late but “ The emperor has no clothes” is a referring to a Hans Christian Andersen story about an emperor requesting new clothes and two swindlers giving him an “outfit” that turns invisible around people unfit for his office. Its a lie (obv), but everyone assisting the emperor refuses to tell him so he doesn’t think they’re unfit for their positions until a child sees him outside and says ‘the emperor has no clothes on’. The moral is about being surrounded by ‘yes men’ with nobody to correct you when you look dumb pretty much

    Jefferson made some disparaging remarks about Washington that strained their relationship but honestly it was more Martha Washington who despised Jefferson. It's kind of insane to think that the people who created this country, while undoubtedly brilliant, could act like schoolchildren from time to time 🤦‍♀️

  • @whaleymom76
    @whaleymom76 3 года назад +3

    The immigrant/part-black thing probably has more to do with the need to simplify the concept quickly for the audience. Calling him an immigrant is a moniker that would be more universally understood by a wide audience. Also, the biggest insult they actually used was "bastard" and that would be unlikely to be worked into a lyrical song. (Burr already does it in the exposition

    Idk if you have a video about it, but I’m curious about your thoughts of removing statues and renaming confederate things. I’m from Virginia and there is SO much civil war related stuff, roads named after people and lots of statues. I’m not sure what I think of it yet. I kinda see both sides, idk just curious on your thoughts.

    • @patriotsfan122480
      @patriotsfan122480 3 года назад +1

      I think it had a bit more to do with how Lin saw Hamilton and how he connected with him as a character. Obviously creative liberties are always taken with things like this (stage shows, movies, TV Shows, etc) but I also always see it and suggest to others as a good jumping on point to actually learn more about these people and events, rather than take it all at face value. It is still a semi-fictional portrayal, but could be a very good jumping on point for people young and old to learn or refresh their knowledge about early American history.
