By the way, let me know what you think of my inclusion of sound bites at the beginning of each spot on the list (when it displays the number).
I thought I'd try it out here, Schaffrillas does this in his ranking videos and its great, but I don't want to be accused of copying him. However the sound bites add so much charm to each entry on the list before the main commentary comes in, and I wanted to do that here.
So let me know if I should keep doing that in my future ranking videos or not.

    • @RanterInShades
      @RanterInShades Месяц назад +11

I was gonna say, the Schaffrillas influence is very apparent here. I actually think ending the segments with Statler and Waldorf was a clever touch.

I’d say it’s all good. Schaffrillas doesn’t own a trademark on “using sound bites in top 10s” and you are not copying exactly what he does with his sound bites either.

I dont mean to be disrespectful, but some of your critiques come across as though you don't understand the Muppets or the time it was made in.
"Kermit is too mean" Kermit was a pretty big grouch in the original Muppet Show. He fatshamed Piggy, called his costars idiots, etc. He was the stressed-out producer archetype.
And a lot of the "pointless scenes" that seem useless to the plot are bits. The Muppets borrows heavily from Vaudeville, so their movies have an overall plot but its filled with guest stars and random gags. That's the format. Its like a Mel Brooks movie; not everything has to be this tight, relevant plot-important beat.

Everything you said about The Muppets 2011 is so accurate to how I feel about it. Since I saw it, Walter has been my favorite Muppets character; his passion for the Muppets really drives this movie for me. You can tell how deeply he cherishes the Muppets for what they are, how much meaning and happiness he gained from them. He is so willing to help them see that, he actually has to learn to step out of his own comfort zone. To me, that’s such a powerful arc for a protagonist to have. And boy are the songs BANGERS! They’re emotionally resonating, wholesome, hilarious, catchy, and nothing short of joyful ☺️ I’m so glad to live in a day and age where The Muppets got a film that paid such a beautiful homage to their history, as well as to the heart and soul of the man who created them ❤️

35:38 I'm a Muppets take Manhattan fan, but that stems from childhood nostalgia as I'd watch this one the most as a kid hahaha. I wouldn't say it's terrible by any means, there are some really lovely moments, my favourite probably being when Kermit yells from the top of a skyscraper about how he refuses to give up (makes me tear up). Also I highly recommend Little Shop of Horrors (1986) also directed by Oz- the direction in that film is so expressive and stylish, especially during the musical sequences (seek out the directors cut if you can). Great video, long live the Muppets

Steve refused to have an understudy and train him to be Kermit for smaller events like talk shows, WWE etc since Disney has a rule where all the characters must have a double actor in case the original can’t come back for a project ( Jim Hanks and Tom Hanks for example )

The Muppets (2011) While I don’t remember much from it, I do remember the climax being great, the songs being brilliant (especially Am I A Man Or A Muppet) and the We Built This City montage being peak cinema.
Muppets Most Wanted… aaah~ The history my family has with this movie. We bought it one DVD and loved it ever since. It’s actually become a part of our normal lives know, with my dad constantly quoting the interrogation song. Plus the plot was genius, and it had Ricky Gervais in it.
And… finally… Muppets Christmas Carol. The greatest way to experience A Christmas Carol in movie form. And also a wonderful adaptation that doesn’t dampen, but instead adds to the meaningful message of a legendary novella. Our family has a tradition where we watch it every Christmas Eve, due to Kermit’s song After All There’s Only One More Sleep Til Christmas. Micheal Caine is a legendary actor who plays Scrooge perfectly, and there is never a dull moment throughout the movie, and the songs never fail to bring me to the brink of tears. I'm honestly amazed at how much better Muppet Christmas Carol gets every year. It somehow manages to capture the spirit of the book while at the same time being true to the Muppet humor without it overtaking the messages and meanings of Dickens' story. And every Muppet is just cast so perfectly in their roles. Ironically enough whenever I think of Bob Crachitt, I just think of Kermit because he's just the perfect embodiment of what made the character so endearing. Same with Michael Caine's performance as the boss man himself. Whenever I reread the book, I just naturally hear his voice.
And no, this is not coming from a nostalgia point of view as I only saw the film for the first time three years ago. I just think it's a tremendous movie that critics and audiences slept on when it was released. It is a beautiful love letter to Brian Henson's father and to the story Dickens wrote.

    4 The muppets 2011
    5 The muppet movie
    6 Muppets from space
    7 Muppets treasure island
    8The muppets takes Manhattan
    9 Muppets Haunted Mansion
10 The Muppet’s Wizard of Oz
Had a hard time picking between Most wanted and the Great Muppet Caper. The great muppet caper is number 1 because it focus more on the muppets.
Other edit after watch muppets haunted mansion and rewatching muppets from space I change my list.

Listing my favourite parts of each movie:
14: Bernie the alligator cameo, Kermits Tongue, and Official confirmation of puppophobia
13: Doc Hopper + Gonzo Song + It spawned the kermit 9/11 theory.
    12. Friends of dorothy, Stoner Mayhem Confirmed
    11. Miss Piggy Chase scene, Miss Piggy bending metal, The muppets are at their normal likability as characters(unlike the first 3 where some of them kinda lost their likability). And miss piggy jealousy arc is fully in character.
    10. Jewzoot, Gonzzie duet, and the Gonzrizzope dynamic
    9. Didnt watch
    8. Gonpe Dynamic, Darren Criss, Every Easter Egg, Celebrity Cameos
    7. Gonzrizzo, Stretchy Gonzo
    6. Everything. This is my favourite muppet movie. Also miss piggy killing nazis.
    5. All the muppets live in the same house. Focus on gonzo. Pepe and rizzo.
    4. Sense of humor is funny as shit. Miss Piggy Swimming.
    3. Everything except the rats singing island in the sun
    2. Everything except Jason and Mary. Which is tough since theyre focused on too much.
    1. Tina Fay. Goofiness.

I liked the Moulin Scrooge! scene in AVMMCM, but that's because I love the original, and because I like any fourth wall break regarding that trope when multiple people in a musical sing different things at the same time.
Edit: I like Muppets Take Manhattan but the vibe is very weird. People don't make films like that anymore, where it's purposefully low key and there's no real villain except life itself and the jokes are there to make you smile rather than laugh.
It's like that film with Frank Sinatra and two other famous singers who are sailors who get shore leave, and they don't really do much for the entire film aside from get girlfriends.

Oh, I wouldn’t give up on Frank Oz’s directing chops so quickly - if you haven’t already seen it, give the film version of Little Shop of Horrors a watch! It’s a fantastic film adaptation of a stage musical, and the Audrey II puppet(s) is an absolutely phenomenal piece of puppetry and film-making. :D
Also, no Muppet Family Christmas? It’s longer than 42 minutes, so wouldn’t it meet the criteria?

August 27th, 1998. I am standing in a post-Soviet hallway. Somewhere down the hall, a baby is screaming for a mother that will never come. I can smell, somewhere in the bowels of this place, the thick stench of nicotine. It beckons to me, like a siren's wail. Instead, I trudge on to a miserable little hole in the wall, where I might find solace. This is my home. In the west, these places are likened to castles. "Fortresses of dreams." Here, it is another sick reflection of the hell I dwell in. I sit down on a flea-ridden sofa. Somewhere underneath, something crunches, and breaks. Perhaps it dies. I do not care. Instead, I take my remote control, and I turn on the TV. Гавно, it's the Muppets. They beckon to me. Offering something I will never have. I fall into a trance-like state. The cushions give way to fields. The concrete ceiling, once cracked and dead, falls apart to reveal a sunny sky. For a time, I am at peace. But soon the rush dies, and the ceiling reforms, and the sun darkens and the cushions return. I am back in my apartment, burned by a severe question: of the many Muppet Movies, which one is objectively the shittest??? (It's the Muppet of Oz)

I have seen the list now and the main thing I can say is thank you for being up the extended (and true) cut of Muppets Christmas Carol. When Love is Gone is such an exception song (which is incredibly emotional and it even strengthens Scrooge as a character) and the movie just isn’t the same with its absence from the theatrical cut. I believe the reason why it was cut was because of Jeffrey Katzenburg being Jeffrey Katzenburg since he was a major Disney figure head when the movie was releasing. Heck, before the full cut finally made its way onto Disney+, I found myself tracking down a LaserDisc copy of the movie just so I could own a copy of the full cut.
If you are a fan of Muppets Christmas Carol and you haven’t seen the full cut, do yourself a favour and watch it. It is finally easily accessible now on Disney+ and once you experience it, you will probably never be able to go back to the theatrical cut. It takes an already excellent movie and elevates it significantly.

Muppets take Manhattan is a classic!! I think you missed some of the jokes that were timely when the film was released , the scene with Miss Piggy and the make up girl was Joan Rivers. Joan Rivers was a comedian that was famous for her facelifts and fashion jokes. The guy who was a scam artist was played by Dabney Coleman, he was famous for playing jerks in films. I saw this film when it first came out in theaters and the jokes hit.

I also put Muppets Take Manhattan pretty low on my list. It has some good moments and songs, but for me it seems the most dated of the theatrical films. Like "Space" feels a little 90s, but MTM straight up feels like an "80s Movie". Muppet movies should feel timeless, but by making 1980s NYC the center piece of the movie, it dates the whole thing.

  • @CarbonSpire
    @CarbonSpire Месяц назад +2

You're ranking is yours, and it's totally legit. You say you're a younger person and the newer films hit your favor. I get your current rankings, bc of that.
Based on your criteria, I think you skipped over 3 titles.... The Lady Gaga Xmas special, Emmett Otter, and the Great Santa Switch. Maybe the last 2 are too old to make the cut, and Gaga was only a Muppet feature. It doesn't really matter.
As someone who grew up with them Muppets in the 70s/80s, I want you to rethink the 2 new movies when you rewatch them.
I'll admit, I'm a little jaded about Most Wanted bc I saw it in theaters with a friend who was from Georgia (the country, not state), and never seen a Muppet movie before. They were quite offended by the low-brow gulag humor. Tina Faye and the whole Gulag plot is uncomfortably racist.
Meanwhile, I heard a whole Muppets reboot hinged on the Walter movie. As a stand alone, it's cute.... But as a relaunch of a franchise it was absolutely terrible. The plot was "NO one cares about the Muppets anymore. Let's do a fundraiser to save the Muppets, and ultimately... It proves that no one cares about the Muppets anymore."
If the plot conclusion of a franchise revival is 'folks really aren't interested'.... Idk how they even got a sequel!
I really liked the new 'the muppets' TV show, but Disney aired it on ABC during the" death of broadcast tv"... Killing the property after low views.
You didn't really like Muppets Take Manhattan, but I challenge that this is exactly what makes good Muppets. No villian, Kermit or Muppet as main character (M from Space?). Manhattan is a very 80s plot, and I don't blame you for being bored by jokes I cackle at as a GenXer. IMHO, that scene bt Piggy and Joan Rivers is about the funniest skit ever, en par with Jean Stapleton and Crazy Harry. It's not timeless, but it's iconic for it's time.
Perhaps that's the indefatigable conundrum of the Muppets. There is a desire to keep them present, bc they feel timeless..... But they, in fact, are not.
Henson invented their innocent/absurdist humor. Parallel with Monty Python, they transformed the humor of the 60/70s...but while the Pythons got old, puppets never age. It's why they're more successful performing established tales VS new stories of their own.
The Muppets need a visionary leader (free of the Disney leash holders)... Or they will decay to the status of Disney props.
If they are regulated to intrepting existing works, Fuck this Gatsby movement! I want watch the Muppets perform THE VISIT. Piggy as Claire, Kermit as Authur. Gawd, it might be the best Muppets ever!
