It's a shame most of these are early access, low-budget PC indies that will never be in any state that could reflect a finished product. Would be nice to see a competent AAA development team make a decent survival game.
@Primal, well "The Forest" doing insanely well. If you have not tried it i would recommend you do. It is really cheap and they update it on regular basis. To be honest i do not think they are far from done with the game.
gameplay in stranded deep is very interesting but quite limited, also ark is a really good game exept the official server suck, in pve, you can't build nothing cause all the map have pillar everywhere, in pvp, cause of interserver invasion, nigth raid, troll, alfa and omega tribe.
+Scorpion Sort of, but I believe all of the games here have more of a threat than enemies such as bandits, zombies, etc. You have to worry about things such as hunger. I know why you think dying light is a survival game. But it just doesn't have all the aspects

I played all of the games and most of them I have on steam and I can say this ... Survival games are games that put the player to fight for his life , for , his world, for his territory and clan. Rust 500- hours is that kind of game if you have lots of friends who can buy the game with you then this games is for you BUT IF YOU ARE SOLO THEN DON'T BUY IT all so the game doesn't really have a goal and a end point so the game is basically just a base building and shooting game that is fun to play with friends 6/10. Don't starve -350 hours is a game that has a goal but doesn't really make it that big of a deal you can make it as a surviving time game , just survive as long as you can . Minecraft 6000 hours a game that gives the player a chance to do what ever he wants and play in any mode he wants , the game is really fun and interesting and has a end goal , the community and people are all so very interesting or at least were 3-4 years ago would give 10/10. ARK survival (400 hours ) is just like conan-exile (150 hours) just the difference in the games are that in ark you can tame and rule Dinasaurs and has a very great end game goal , the graphics and the view of the game is amazing would give the game 9 out of 10 , Conan-exile is bases more on , enemies ,hand combat and all so has a ending but the ending is a lot harder to achieve if your playing by your self, the graphics and the view is good but not that good , most basic computers will be able to run the game ,unlike ark were you will need a really a high end PC to play the game on max graphics to take in all the game has to offer so I would give conan-exile 7/10. Subnautica (500 hours) I finished the game and been following it from the very beginning , the game truly is amazing with a great story and amazing environment the game truly is amazing would give 10/10, The long dark is one of those games that will put your survival knowledge and skills to the test if you jump in to a survival game for the first time you will die a lot , the story is interesting and fun to go true , truly puts a interest and a goal to keep on playing, the graphics and view are all so very good , give you the feeling of really being there.Stranded deep ( 250-300 hours) is just basically just like salt(80-100 hours) only difference is that the graphics and game mechanics are different for stranded deep would give 7/10 and salt 6/10. Oxygen not included(90 hours ) so far has no goal , the game mechanics feel not finished and sluggish . The game is missing something what most games have for example the story, the graphics are not very good but interesting something different from most games but in the end so far I would give the game 4/10 maybe even 3/10 just not a really good game. This war of mine(100-150 hours) is a game that in a way has a story but what it has is amazing atmosphere it puts the pressure on the player to survive the war . The game to put it simple is 7/10. Frostpunk ( atleast 300 hours ) I can say this I love the game and hate it , it truly is a amazing game and beside the great atmosphere , graphics and story the game truly is worth every penny . The game is really hard and truly challenges player to survive the amount of days you need to survive. Puts hard moments on the player were you need to pick what law to put in. The game is easily 9/10 .Now for state of decay ( 320-400 hours ) the game is fun to play has a goal and just like most games has grate graphics and game mechanics how ever state of decay 2 is basically the same game with some small fixes and add ons . Would recommend to just buy state of decay 1 and play that one because in some ways the game is even better and the price is a lot more better for what the games offers.Would give 7/10.7 Days to Die (maybe close to 1000 hours ) I been following the game from alpha 2 and so far the game is still in alpha but even after all of the time has passed the creators are still working very hard and putting out updates . The game is truly interesting and fun to play , the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is challenging , the story is not yet there but with how much the game has right now I can say this that even now I would say the game is worth the money that it cost and if that was not enough there are a lot of mods that are being released that make the games even harder and more interesting to play . I can easily say this that for me this game gave me something to do every single time and I spend a lot of my free time having fun and building bases in the game and that is with out the mods that you can add to the game . For me this game was 9/10 or maybe even 10/10. And now for the last 2 games I can say this every person that wants to play something truly amazing and interesting , something that gives a great story , great characters , great graphics and just truly games that put out the level at witch games should be made. Skyrim(290 hours) and Witcher 2(50 hours) or 3(over 500 hours) , these games are one of the best if not the best games possible to get and play. Just go buy the game and give it a try most likely you will not regret it and will have a lot of fun playing them. The games have a lot to offer and if that was not enough there are plenty of mods for the games that improve the game in the way you want it. If you read everything I wrote then thank you. +Austin Smith All of those critics that wrote about it only got about an hour or so into it, and called it crap for the, I will admit, crappy beginning feel of the game. For the game to feel great, you must play it for hours on end, it only takes about four before you start getting good shit. Ask all the people (Including me) who have 200-1,500 hours into it.
I love survival games and I played almost all the ones on this list. Ark is the best, but 7 Days to Die is the 2nd best. I have almost 2000 hours in this game and it is a game that just keeps on giving.

I've never played it, but I've watched a lots of let's play vids to get ideas for my own survival game. It looks like despite its age the game has held up well.
Ark is easily the greatest Survival game out and one of the greatest games ever, and if you think any of the three games listed above it are better you're out of your mind.
I know I'm late, but my personal list is: 10. 7 Days to Die 9. Starbound 8. ARK 7. Stranded Deep 6. Rust 5. The Forest 4. Scum 3. Don't Starve 2. Subnautica 1. Green Hell (gameplay is INCREDIBLE) Honorable Mentions: Minecraft because of its originality, Terraria because it is epic, DayZ not ranked because it almost never updates anymore. EDIT: Unturned should have been somewhere here! I forgot about it.

Stranded Deep gets the number 2 spot and 7 Days to Die isn't even on the list? I know tons of folks (including myself) that have over 1,000 hours invested 7D2D, but there's hardly any content in Stranded Deep yet. Shame on you, Fraghero!
Yeah but 7D2D was rather weak. I just sat in he woods in a bush on day 7 and 98% of the hordes would go attack some one else who was a freaking building mad man on the server, in morning I killed what my spikes couldn't patched up the damage, and back to business lol
+Zalzany Next beta (A15)is adressing two of those issues. First, spikes are being nerfed so they will no longer be over powered. Second, the feral hordes will be dynamic fir every person on the map. larger groups of people will get more zeds, but everyone should find themselves attacked on red moon nights. If it is still too easy try making your own server, an kick all the settings up to make the game more difficult. i.e. the hardest difficulty setting, set the zeds to chase you longer, turn their spawn rate up, set the day to 120 mins, and set the zeds to always run. also try a server with fewer people, or maybe even solo. and don't build an underground base. like almost all games, when you figure out the mechanics it can be too easy. As a sandbox crafting survival game, I think it is one of the best.
Server play is very different from single play. For one there's the whole nr of zeds alive at any one point, so with many players that nr per player can become quite measly. Also from back when I was last on a server (14,5) then the players online seemed to have a huge impact on the hordes. There always seemed to be new players joining the server even after day 500 and with newbie players in the hordes were nothing and when I was alone on the server the hordes were same as SP. Also level seemed to play a huge part, I always got hordes and I was the highest level on the server. the gun nuts just never leveled while my and my crafting arse leveled like mad. So the gunslingers who wanted the zeds got none and I who tried to defend without engagement got tons.
Throku - Were you in Nav (Navezgane) or RG (random Gen)? In both though the zeds will go to the highest heat map activity. You were quite ( crouched ) and had to compete for zed attention with people who was building, using forges, campfires, etc. lol
RG, and I wasn't generating much heat. Same thing with normal non horde spawn, if I ran into a town or city I'd have a horde on my tail while the gunslingers wouldn't because they were half my level.
it should've have been as it is waaaay more better than DayZ, and it's beta version is about to soon be launched... unlike in DayZ they have been in developing stage since it has been launched!!

7 Days to Die actually shouldve been #1, no other of these games here is as polished as 7 Days To Die, looks as good while still being entirely sandbox open world, and plays as good. This list here is pretty shit, Minecraft shouldnt even be in it, its not actually a survival game anymore. The video is just disgusting, considering he mentions a bunch of strong points about some of these games here that 7dtd all does have, too. But you know why it didnt make the list at all? Because its not hyped enough. Because its not an AAA title. Because it actually has a decent community not entirely made of kiddies and therefore the word of the game isnt spread everywhere the way it is done with minecraft, Ark or Rust. About DayZ... it has potential. But the development is so slow, its been in early alpha for what? 5 years? And the controls are so clunky, the engine is just broken and everything is full of bugs... it shoulve been a honorable mention at best... same goes to rust. It used to be a zombie survival game, thats what people purchased it as, and then they removed the damn zombies turning it into a huge pvp killing ground... just a douchebag developer...

Project Zomboid is by far one of the best in terms of survival mechanics and gameplay. Most games on this list are more PvP or action focused then survival.

The Long Dark has to be the most hadcore, pure survival game I have ever seen. There's no magic, no zombies, no monsters; just animals that exist in the real world, a cold, deserted wasteland and you, trying to survive. Intense. Good luck.
yeah, me too. but maybe because terraria isn't really about surviving because you can survive without eating. terraria is more like a crafting game. you can just dig underground and live forever without worrying about your hunger. maybe that's why he didn't mention it.
dark junior Ark is horribly optimized and that's a pain in the ass to do yourself, but I will agree it's a great game, and once it gets optimized it will surely deserve 1st place

Awesome video dude. Very pro. I would just recommend working on your sound design and background music, since there's some silences and awkward quieter moments. But otherwise, I would assume a professional wrote and directed this.
I love stranded deep but there is a big issue in the game since the start that hasn‘t been touched. Crabs, boars stones and palmtrees/coconuts don‘t respawn. That forces you to jump from island to island to start again. I think it is essential to a game where you have to survive to respawn important recources you need in the game. The game isn‘t about being saved the game is about survival and crafting but when you take away important parts of the survival and crafting mechanics and force the player to islandhop on the same type of biome again and again just to start over it becomes annoying and buring. That‘s why i prefer subnautica. Subnautica doesn‘g respawn some items too but there is quite enough for you to build a great base. The different biomes make it worth exploring and after gathering a large suit to mine resources more effectively than ever before and farming it really justifies the lack of respawning of some items. If you eradicate respawning resources from your game then put enough recources into it to make it playable. I do admire the team and how well they listen to their community but this issue has been ignored for the longest time and it needs fixing!
I was expecting Dying Light on this list. Putting the game on Hard can easily make your game agonizing, especially at night. Plus, scavenging and the day/night mechanic was fantastic.

That's the aspect I love about Subnautica. You really have to focus on your hunger and thirst, which have many different ways to be replenished, while also progressing further and further under the ocean. And, through all of that, there's an amazing story, a great ending, and even a DLC to come.

All survival games are way too similar, except subnautica. This game is new and innovative with the best story, prettiest world and the scariest enemies. Subnautica should be #1 without question. Its the only survival game you can play longer than 10 hrs (except for maybe ark)
The reason I think it may be that way is because Subnautica is based on another planet, completely far from humanity (because face it, the game wouldn't exist of humans were next door xD they could just pick the character up in a couple days or however long it may be) and not only that, it's an alien planet and aliens could look like anything...it has unpredictable things to offer, even Ark is original. It's a survival game with dinosaurs around but you have the ability to make guns or Tek weaponry for the advanced section of the game. I still loved the list though

That's cuz you play the 'grindy' way. :( I found minibikes for.. in Creative Mode right away. Yeah, yeah I know, you think it's cheating. Well it's not, they put Creative Mode in the game for a reason. Some of us want to have FUN with this game and "hit the ground running" as they say. We want to survive and thrive quickly. The game's always trying to kill you, so make the best of it and survive the best way you can on YOUR terms. Think outside the 'grindy' box. It's waay more fun. :D
I haven't been able to get into it like 7dtd which has become pretty much the only game i play anymore or Subnatica but I only kept playing cuz how beautiful the graphics are.

Minecraft 6000 hours a game that gives the player a chance to do what ever he wants and play in any mode he wants , the game is really fun and interesting and has a end goal , the community and people are all so very interesting or at least were 3-4 years ago would give 10/10. ARK survival (400 hours ) is just like conan-exile (150 hours) just the difference in the games are that in ark you can tame and rule Dinasaurs and has a very great end game goal , the graphics and the view of the game is amazing would give the game 9 out of 10 , Conan-exile is bases more on , enemies ,hand combat and all so has a ending but the ending is a lot harder to achieve if your playing by your self, the graphics and the view is good but not that good , most basic computers will be able to run the game ,unlike ark were you will need a really a high end PC to play the game on max graphics to take in all the game has to offer so I would give conan-exile 7/10. Subnautica (500 hours) I finished the game and been following it from the very beginning , the game truly is amazing with a great story and amazing environment the game truly is amazing would give 10/10, The long dark is one of those games that will put your survival knowledge and skills to the test if you jump in to a survival game for the first time you will die a lot , the story is interesting and fun to go true , truly puts a interest and a goal to keep on playing, the graphics and view are all so very good , give you the feeling of really being there.Stranded deep ( 250-300 hours) is just basically just like salt(80-100 hours) only difference is that the graphics and game mechanics are different for stranded deep would give 7/10 and salt 6/10. Oxygen not included(90 hours ) so far has no goal , the game mechanics feel not finished and sluggish . The game is missing something what most games have for example the story, the graphics are not very good but interesting something different from most games but in the end so far I would give the game 4/10 maybe even 3/10 just not a really good game. This war of mine(100-150 hours) is a game that in a way has a story but what it has is amazing atmosphere it puts the pressure on the player to survive the war . The game to put it simple is 7/10. Frostpunk ( atleast 300 hours ) I can say this I love the game and hate it , it truly is a amazing game and beside the great atmosphere , graphics and story the game truly is worth every penny . The game is really hard and truly challenges player to survive the amount of days you need to survive. Puts hard moments on the player were you need to pick what law to put in. The game is easily 9/10 .Now for state of decay ( 320-400 hours ) the game is fun to play has a goal and just like most games has grate graphics and game mechanics how ever state of decay 2 is basically the same game with some small fixes and add ons . Would recommend to just buy state of decay 1 and play that one because in some ways the game is even better and the price is a lot more better for what the games offers.Would give 7/10.7 Days to Die (maybe close to 1000 hours ) I been following the game from alpha 2 and so far the game is still in alpha but even after all of the time has passed the creators are still working very hard and putting out updates . The game is truly interesting and fun to play , the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is challenging , the story is not yet there but with how much the game has right now I can say this that even now I would say the game is worth the money that it cost and if that was not enough there are a lot of mods that are being released that make the games even harder and more interesting to play . I can easily say this that for me this game gave me something to do every single time and I spend a lot of my free time having fun and building bases in the game and that is with out the mods that you can add to the game . For me this game was 9/10 or maybe even 10/10. And now for the last 2 games I can say this every person that wants to play something truly amazing and interesting , something that gives a great story , great characters , great graphics and just truly games that put out the level at witch games should be made. Skyrim(290 hours) and Witcher 2(50 hours) or 3(over 500 hours) , these games are one of the best if not the best games possible to get and play. Just go buy the game and give it a try most likely you will not regret it and will have a lot of fun playing them. The games have a lot to offer and if that was not enough there are plenty of mods for the games that improve the game in the way you want it.

For the game to feel great, you must play it for hours on end, it only takes about four before you start getting good shit. Ask all the people (Including me) who have 200-1,500 hours into it.
I love survival games and I played almost all the ones on this list. Ark is the best, but 7 Days to Die is the 2nd best. I have almost 2000 hours in this game and it is a game that just keeps on giving.

Stranded Deep gets the number 2 spot and 7 Days to Die isn't even on the list? I know tons of folks (including myself) that have over 1,000 hours invested 7D2D, but there's hardly any content in Stranded Deep yet. Shame on you, Fraghero!
Yeah but 7D2D was rather weak. I just sat in he woods in a bush on day 7 and 98% of the hordes would go attack some one else who was a freaking building mad man on the server, in morning I killed what my spikes couldn't patched up the damage, and back to business lol
+Zalzany Next beta (A15)is adressing two of those issues. First, spikes are being nerfed so they will no longer be over powered. Second, the feral hordes will be dynamic fir every person on the map. larger groups of people will get more zeds, but everyone should find themselves attacked on red moon nights. If it is still too easy try making your own server, an kick all the settings up to make the game more difficult. i.e. the hardest difficulty setting, set the zeds to chase you longer, turn their spawn rate up, set the day to 120 mins, and set the zeds to always run. also try a server with fewer people, or maybe even solo. and don't build an underground base. like almost all games, when you figure out the mechanics it can be too easy. As a sandbox crafting survival game, I think it is one of the best.
Server play is very different from single play. For one there's the whole nr of zeds alive at any one point, so with many players that nr per player can become quite measly. Also from back when I was last on a server (14,5) then the players online seemed to have a huge impact on the hordes. There always seemed to be new players joining the server even after day 500 and with newbie players in the hordes were nothing and when I was alone on the server the hordes were same as SP. Also level seemed to play a huge part, I always got hordes and I was the highest level on the server. the gun nuts just never leveled while my and my crafting arse leveled like mad. So the gunslingers who wanted the zeds got none and I who tried to defend without engagement got tons.
Throku - Were you in Nav (Navezgane) or RG (random Gen)? In both though the zeds will go to the highest heat map activity. You were quite ( crouched ) and had to compete for zed attention with people who was building, using forges, campfires, etc. lol
RG, and I wasn't generating much heat. Same thing with normal non horde spawn, if I ran into a town or city I'd have a horde on my tail while the gunslingers wouldn't because they were half my level.

7 Days to Die actually shouldve been #1, no other of these games here is as polished as 7 Days To Die, looks as good while still being entirely sandbox open world, and plays as good. This list here is pretty shit, Minecraft shouldnt even be in it, its not actually a survival game anymore. The video is just disgusting, considering he mentions a bunch of strong points about some of these games here that 7dtd all does have, too. But you know why it didnt make the list at all? Because its not hyped enough. Because its not an AAA title. Because it actually has a decent community not entirely made of kiddies and therefore the word of the game isnt spread everywhere the way it is done with minecraft, Ark or Rust. About DayZ... it has potential. But the development is so slow, its been in early alpha for what? 5 years? And the controls are so clunky, the engine is just broken and everything is full of bugs... it shoulve been a honorable mention at best... same goes to rust. It used to be a zombie survival game, thats what people purchased it as, and then they removed the damn zombies turning it into a huge pvp killing ground... just a douchebag developer...

I played it a lot too. Even if it is really easy in general. You barely even need weapons against normal enemies.
Project Zomboid is by far one of the best in terms of survival mechanics and gameplay. Most games on this list are more PvP or action focused then survival.

Awesome video dude. Very pro. I would just recommend working on your sound design and background music, since there's some silences and awkward quieter moments. But otherwise, I would assume a professional wrote and directed this.
I love stranded deep but there is a big issue in the game since the start that hasn‘t been touched. Crabs, boars stones and palmtrees/coconuts don‘t respawn. That forces you to jump from island to island to start again. I think it is essential to a game where you have to survive to respawn important recources you need in the game. The game isn‘t about being saved the game is about survival and crafting but when you take away important parts of the survival and crafting mechanics and force the player to islandhop on the same type of biome again and again just to start over it becomes annoying and buring. That‘s why i prefer subnautica. Subnautica doesn‘g respawn some items too but there is quite enough for you to build a great base. The different biomes make it worth exploring and after gathering a large suit to mine resources more effectively than ever before and farming it really justifies the lack of respawning of some items. If you eradicate respawning resources from your game then put enough recources into it to make it playable. I do admire the team and how well they listen to their community but this issue has been ignored for the longest time and it needs fixing!

No. They do not. They graphic goal was a pixelated style to separate it from other games easily. There are different types of styles in terms of graphics, same as we have with artwork and design. For example, a water painted picture don't suck more than a pencil drawn image just because its water painted. In that same sense, pixelated graphics don't mean the graphics suck.
If graphics suck, they failed to reach their goal and/or are inconsistent with it. For example, if a game aims to be realistic and as photo realistic as possible, and yet it has low res textures and boxy models, then yes the graphics suck. If a game aims to have a cartoon feel to it, with high res textures or pixelated feel with great pixel art, then graphics don't suck. (Such are the case of Minecraft and games like Borderlands or TellTale's series.)

Let's go down the list here...
Sir, You Are Being Hunted- Great game
Minecraft- Awesome game but is not necessarily survival
DayZ- Standalone is dog crap but the mod for ARMA is awesome
The Long Dark- Great game
The Forrest- Good except for the unfinished feeling but it is not done so yeah
Rust- Good game if you are not playing with douche bags in the server, most of the time you are just going to hit a rock for 10 hours and then raided when you are asleep
ARK- Get low frames unless you have a good PC and I think is better than Rust
Subnautica- Good game but takes forever to get anything
Stranded Deep- Was good but in my opinion is kinda been going down hill
Don't Starve- AMAZING GAME!!!! BEST ONE ON THE LIST!! (Except for the DAYZ mod for ARMA)
That's the aspect I love about Subnautica. You really have to focus on your hunger and thirst, which have many different ways to be replenished, while also progressing further and further under the ocean. And, through all of that, there's an amazing story, a great ending, and even a DLC to come.
Subnautica survival mode is easy...

All survival games are way too similar, except subnautica. This game is new and innovative with the best story, prettiest world and the scariest enemies. Subnautica should be #1 without question. Its the only survival game you can play longer than 10 hrs (except for maybe ark)
I bet you haven't tried any other survival games, and the fact that you said is subjective.

The reason I think it may be that way is because Subnautica is based on another planet, completely far from humanity (because face it, the game wouldn't exist of humans were next door xD they could just pick the character up in a couple days or however long it may be) and not only that, it's an alien planet and aliens could look like anything...it has unpredictable things to offer, even Ark is original. It's a survival game with dinosaurs around but you have the ability to make guns or Tek weaponry for the advanced section of the game. I still loved the list though
AKR: Survival Evolved is still the best. Easy worth the few extra "gold" ;)

deffinately agree with u on the 7 days to die, was waiting 4 it and yea... id even say its even 1 of the harder 1s to play (at least alone anyways) i play solo on it now and still cant find that dang minibikes 4 dumbshits!!! EEERRR!

That's cuz you play the 'grindy' way. :( I found minibikes for.. in Creative Mode right away. Yeah, yeah I know, you think it's cheating. Well it's not, they put Creative Mode in the game for a reason. Some of us want to have FUN with this game and "hit the ground running" as they say. We want to survive and thrive quickly. The game's always trying to kill you, so make the best of it and survive the best way you can on YOUR terms. Think outside the 'grindy' box. It's waay more fun. :D

i have the forest and it’s a REALLY well put together game. it’s amazing.
I haven't been able to get into it like 7dtd which has become pretty much the only game i play anymore or Subnatica but I only kept playing cuz how beautiful the graphics are.

so far the games on this list that I have (the forest and subnautica) are truly good games, so probably the rest of the games on this list are good as well. Also here's a percentage for all of the comment's topics: 95%: 7 ways to die should be on the list and 5% is anything else
