      HI Grant, can you please cover an issue I just came across. I am booked solo and bought specialty dining (3). Tried to make a reservation but the smallest party size is 2? I called the customer service and he told me that as a solo I would have to wait and book when I am on the ship??? Seems highly prejudicial and unfair. Have you experienced this?

    • @spawnsmama
      @spawnsmama Год назад

      @@cindyneubauer9288 You just pick the 2. The reservation is to reserve a table and the smallest table size is for 2.

    • @cindyneubauer9288
      @cindyneubauer9288 Год назад

      @@spawnsmama Yes, but the issue/problem is this. I had 4 specialty dining that I had paid for and when you make a reservation for 2 they "use" two of your specialty dining "certificates" then you can only make one more reservation. In other words I had 4 pre-paid specialty dining but could only make 2 reservations. The reservation (very obviously) is not only for the table, they diminish the number of reservations you are able to make based on how many you have pre-paid for.

    • @spawnsmama
      @spawnsmama Год назад

      @@cindyneubauer9288 Ah, I see what the confusion is and why it's stressing you. There is NO limit to the # of reservations you can make and you do not pay at the time of reservation booking. Your actual package credits get loaded onto your room key card when you board, so they don't really exist to be spent at reservation. If you aren't aware, you will have to tell the restaurant how you want to pay, use your package or pay ala carte when you show up to eat. The one thing your question prompted me to do next is see how far in advance I have to cancel a dining reservation that I don't need.

    • @cindyneubauer9288
      @cindyneubauer9288 Год назад

      @@spawnsmama No, obviously I tried to book four ahead of time and it would only let me book 2. I called Norwegian and they said this was how it was done. That was the reason for my post. I truly imagine they limit how many reservations you can book as otherwise people would book every specialty restaurant for every night and then simply cancel or no show at the time. It is, at least for solo or first time Norwegian cruisers, a limit.

    One of the best things about the studio cabins is that the rooms are all incredibly quiet. There's no noisy couple or rowdy children next door, or even loud conversations... Because everyone is traveling solo! I loved my studio cabin experiences, but I will say that the studio lounge can be unused or a great spot... It really does depend on the cruise and the ship.

I may not always stay in the solo lounge (sometimes it's less expensive to stay in an inside room with a supplement), but I do appreciate the effort they put into making sure solo travelers are taken care of. Like you said, each group of solos can vary, some large groups, some smaller groups, some quiet groups, some partying groups. It's all good, you can do as much or as little with them as you choose. Hi Grant, thanks for your video. I just traveled solo on the NCL Getaway (March 18-26, NYC Bahamas) but I booked a Club Balcony Suite on deck 14. It was very convenient for being on the upper decks, and Ihad a Spa Pass which was not far away. As you correctly said, it's not a budget way to go, but I'm fortunate to be able to do it. I recommend the Vibe Beach Pass also, as these ships are sailing full capacity now. I really enjoyed it. Gardis CT

    I'm booked on a cruise to Alaska on the Norwegian Bliss in September. The rate for a solo/studio cabin was significantly higher than paying single surcharge in a regular cabin. I guess that means I don't get admission to the Studio Lounge since I'm travelling with a nonexistent partner 🤣

    I'm going on the brand new VIVA nest may frim Rome. It's an expensive cruise, as it's a brand new ship and great itinerary . I'm really looking forward to my studio, and let's get right down to it - a full size bed is a great size for a single person! The newer ship(Prima and Viva) have a 3 room lounge, and I'm right next door - so I can hang out in a huge beautiful space - instead of my cabin to read, watch TV, and have drinks and snacks. My only problem is that the airfare(at this time) is almost as much as my cruise fare! But my cruise has ZERO at sea days - so the only thing I need from my ship is a good breakfast,a good dinner every night, and a place to sleep! I'm pretty excited!

    Wow, glad to see you and other people have enjoyed the solo traveler meetup. Seeing your photos, that's what I was expecting, but my experience in Sep 2019 on Getaway on a Baltic cruise was very different. I showed up to the first session and was available for a dinner or activity that night but the staff person was only interested in getting everyone's information and then leaving and no one else seemed interested in getting anything together. I found the vibe of the 20 or so people gathered a little blasé and not particularly friendly, surprisingly, since everyone was gathering with the intention to socialize. I was attracted to NCL because of the solo cabins but I actually wound up finding a great balcony cabin for less than the solo ones (was booking within a couple of months of the sailing). So I didn't have access to the lounge and that's where the next meetings would be held. Once she took everyone's info, the staff person said they would contact us for the next one and I never heard from them again. She knew that I wasn't in the solo cabins. Never saw anything in the daily sheet about the solo group either which would have been a great way to communicate too. I didn't have access to the lounge and never got to see that either (the initial meet-up was in the dance club). I would have enjoyed that perk but I really loved my balcony cabin. I guess I could have tried to figure out how to contact the cruise director staff but I was just waiting and didn't know how to follow up. I do enjoy my alone time (which is a big part of why I am comfortable traveling solo) so ultimately this didn't have a huge impact on my trip, but I would agree that this solo meetup experience greatly depends on the individual staff coordinating it.

      Thanks so much for sharing your experience! While I've had great experiences on most of my cruises, I had one experience similar to yours. It can be frustrating, but I've found that there's often a "hints and suggestions" box for the Hotel Manager and if I've got a hint I've never hesitated to drop something in. I've been so positively surprised in that I usually get a call from the Cruise Director who is very willing to make adjustments. For example, the solo meetup on one cruise was hosted on the outdoor bar where it was rainy / windy. They immediately moved it inside, and adjusted the scheduled time so it didn't conflict with the evening shows. So if you're up to it, I hope you'll give things another go! It can be amazing! Sending all the good vibes your way! 😊

    I'm taking my first truly solo cruise in October on the Getaway. I considered a studio, but it's a transatlantic and even after having lived in in a tiny Manhattan apartment (like, smaller than a courtyard penthouse) I just didn't think I would enjoy 2 whole weeks in 100 sq. ft.
    I say it's my first time "truly solo" because I've gone on many music cruises, and have gone solo but roomed with strangers several times, but on all but the first of those I had many friends onboard... I made friends that first time who have sailed with me year after year (occasionally in the same cabin) or even traveled to other destinations over the years.
    Due to the fact that more than half of the ship is usually returning music cruisers NCL doesn't offer *any* solo cruiser programming on those, and my other cruises have been with friends or family so this will be my first time with that.

    On my Alaska cruise the Encore Solo Lounge sadly went unused. I’d see someone come and get a beverage then leave. The “bar” was never open and there was no one assigned as a solo cruise director. Everyone was on their own. I think the lounge is not used so much because it’s an interior space and with Alaska there is so much to see no one wants to sit in a space with no views. I was disappointed as I had hoped to meet some interesting other solo travelers and possibly share dinner tables, etc. Also, contrary to what you stated, those with Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview and Solo Balcony cabins have access to the Lounge as your card is programmed for the locked doors. The issue is solo inside and solo oceanview guests have to travel up 7 decks to get to the lounge which is a hassle since getting an elevator is mostly impossible from 7am to midnight….but that another issue with these huge ships. All in all, I’ll certainly do NCL solo cruising again, especially since I’m close to Platinum status. 🎉

    I prefer the size of regular cabins, so I've never booked a studio. Years ago, NCL used to changed my key card at guest services to allow me access to the studio lounge to attend the solo meetings there, not anymore. Now, I just knock on the door of the solo lounge during meeting times and someone will always let me in. My very first solo get-together was awkward for me since I was not used to speaking with strangers. After many cruises, it has gotten much easier. Some groups and/or hosts have been great while others were so-so. Once our host was changed mid-cruise to a much better one, (I think after someone complained).

    Solo cruising is a bummer, it's almost like the cruise line is punishing solo cruisers. I think cruise lines are missing out on a lot of money by overcharging solo cruisers. Why isn't there an app for that? I guess it is kind of scary sharing a room with a complete stranger but dang why hasn't anyone come up with a matching system to put 2 similar people together in a room? An app that would do a background check or at least help solos connect?

    The Studio cabins and lounge are found on the Breakaway and the Breakaway plus class of ships as well as the most recent ships.
    On the Breakaway there was no bartender and it was only a place for solos to grab a coffee and some quick munchies. I hardly saw anyone here but I knew people were using it because the food kept disappearing.
    The solo meetups in one of the bars was fairly well attended but only by a little over a dozen regulars. If you wanted to set up dinner, activity or an excursion with others, this became the place to do so.
    As the cruise went along I would randomly run into familiar faces and often we would spontaneously arrange something.

      Since this is my first time with NCL, can you explain what you need to sign up for in advance, what can be spontaneous, and how easy/difficult it is to change advance reservations/ get reservations if you decide to join a group of new friends?
      I don't want to miss out of "filled" events/ dinners that should have been reserved early by setting my hopes that I will fit into a solo group. Then again, I'd hate to be losing prepaid money left and right if I "find my people" and want to join the fun with them.

    • @dicknijenhuis9894

      @@mckenna8663 Cancelling a reservation is as easy as going to Guest Services, the excursion desk, the box office or the restaurant and cancelling and rebooking for something else or a different time. Rebooking is dependent on what is available. Before cancelling, check what's available first. If its really popular you may have a hard time getting a reservation.
      If the excursion is not the same day, you can take your excursion tickets, write CANCEL on the back and drop them in the excursion drop box.
      Anytime you cancel something that has a cost attached, the money will be refunded to your keycard. I don't know if the discount you got for booking in advance still applies if you cancel and rebook something else.
      Of course most (if not all) of this can be done on the NCL app on your phone. That depends how comfortable you are with using the app.

    I have years ago travelled solo on NCL, the SS Norway. Many times in fact. I traveled with a group called Singleworld, which had a host onboard to lead group get togethers. Even had separate excursions if you wanted to go on the Singleworld ones. Had a great time. Always got 2nd seating at dinner, and due to the Norway having a few single cabins, I was usually able to get a small cabin by myself if I booked early enough, otherwise, they would match you with a room-mate. No lounges then. Glad to see that there are enough solo travelers (20-100) to keep NCL interested. Not sure about the lounge area tho. Come on, the regular cabins are small, what do you expect for only paying the single fee? The cabins are nice and modern, quit whining about the size.

    I have over 50 cruises under my belt, all but one as a solo traveler. Honnestly, the only cruise I did in a solo studio was, cabin wise, my worst one. I had the impression that I was in a jail cell. So small. And I was missing a big part of cruising: being able to feel the fresh air of the ocean while sipping a drink on my balcony. As for the studio lounge, during that cruise, there was almost nobody there except for an hour or two late afternoon. And yet, fewer than 10 people. My own experience as solo traveler is I always join either the CC blog or the fb page for that specific cruise many months prior to sailing. That allows me to make contact with people that will be on my cruise. Once on the ship, it is easy to connect with those people. Finally, you might be surprised, but sailed many times in a Haven Cabin and most of times, there were other solo travelers in a Haven cabin.

      Hi Ben! Thanks for sharing your experience. I am in the same boat (pun intended) and have cruised solo in many different cabin types; I've loved them all, but the balcony is great. I love a nap with the door open listening to the waves. 😴😴😴 The tips about the Cruise Critics and Facebook groups are excellent! Thanks for sharing! I am also surprised that there are so many solos in the Haven, who knew? 😮

    Would I travel solo? Yes. But I probably won't. I don't really like Caribbean beachy cruises. I want European/Pacific cruises to new countries and NCL just doesn't have enough of them. The few they have just don't work with my schedule. They need more variety with Europe and the Pacific.

    I'm probably going on Breakaway in June. Their studios don't have the virtual balcony :( I think that honestly does make a big difference. In any case, I'm likely going with an interior. It is currently cheaper than the studio. I just hope they will leave the door open to the lounge during meeting times!

    Thanks for your video, it was very helpful. I am travelling in a solo cabin on NCL Encore this July in Alaska, and just received an email to bid for an upgrade. I was apprehensive to put in a bid as I didn't want to get an upgrade, then miss the solo traveler meet ups. Your video has answered my questions as to whether I can gain access to the solo program even though I may not be in a solo cabin, if I happen to get my upgrade.

    On my cruises, I've always travelled with a fairly large piece of luggage filled with camera and audio gear, cables and connectors, electrical supplies (extension cords, batteries, chargers) and smaller cases to wear when I'm in production. Those shrunken cabins don't meet my needs. I need space! Of course I bring clothes and shoes (not too much) as well! For my style, it pays for me to maximize my discounts for being a repeat cruiser, over 55, being from Florida (YES!) and keeping my eyes on the cheapest fares on every cruise line out of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. By booking the cheapest cabin, usually an inside although occasionally with a porthole, I find it's way better to go solo in a standard cabin. On NCL Pearl I lucked into a handicapped cabin when I was recovering after breaking my ankle. I even danced with Emmylou Harris on that one. On my solo Panama Canal cruise, I took along a telescoping fishing rod with a spinning reel, a crushable cooler and mini tackle box. THAT was fun! To me, the cabin space is more important than the lounge or meetups or any of that stuff you're talking about. I'm not shy, I'm not particularly social. I prefer eating by myself when I can shoot video and record audio without hearing unnecessary conversation stepping all over my voiceovers. Going ashore alone doesn't affect me at all. I always meet local people and chat with them buying cigars or arranging for some conch salad. I understand how a lot of people believe that "sharing is caring" when it comes to travel experiences. Not me.

    • @CruisewithGrant
      @CruisewithGrant  Год назад +1

      Hi GC 👋 I'm so glad that my videos have been helping. I think you'll have a great time travelling solo. So the answer to your question is... sometimes. NCL doesn't always offer everyone on board the opportunity to bid on an upgrade. I"m not entirely clear on the criteria, but I know not everyone on every cruise is given the opportunity. When I was on the Encore last year I was in a studio and was invited to bid on a upgrade (and I won!), but I've heard others say they stayed in a studio and were never invited. Usually if you're going to be invited you'll receive an e-mail about 1-2 months out. Please let me know how things turn out! Keep smilin!
