This is the most "next gen" game so far for me. Great image quality, amazing lighting, ridiculous particles and destruction all at 60fps with amazing load times, great sound and great controller features.
Yes bro this really feels like next gen all about this game is incredible the action the soundtrack I give it a 9.5
This and Ratched and Clank.
agreed, it completely blew me away. It is just so fricking hard lol
Excellent 3D Audio too
It’s just an incredible all-around game and one of the reasons I wanted a PS5. The save system had me hesitant at first but the game’s structure makes it feel like you’re always making progress, even when you’re dying.
I love that Housemarque didn’t make any compromises, because they are now making an AAA game, with much more financial risk to it. They did what they’re best at, without watering it down and trying to cater to ALL audiences. GG!
WTF MAN!!! I was wondering where the battle royale mode was!!! or where kratos's blades were!!!!
@Souls Eater Which is something to be praised for sure! I remember reading in an article, that Sony supports their studios with whatever they need to create the game they want, IF they truly believe in it. Same with the new direction of God of War or Horizon ZD. They support you fully, but you better deliver or you become an outcast like Ready at Dawn studios. Which I think is fair, since Sony is taking huge financial risk, letting them go creatively wild.
And we as gamer need to appreciate and not judge to early what risk they are taking , nowadays most gamers are cry baby if the game didn't go as what they expected and that's what kill developer motivation on taking a risk
It's AA not AAA
It’s funny just because it’s not a top down shooter or side scrolling shooter all the sudden it’s triple a because it’s 3D lol. It’s still same gameplay as the other two games. Just in 3D. Only reason they labeled this AAA is because they want to justify $70 price tag.
Wait one month and buy in summer sale for $40
Had to be up at 645 this morning and I had to force myself to put this game down at 2:30am, mid-run. So addicting, so strange and mysterious, so damn fun. Well done Housemarque and a big W for Sony.

The dark sci-fi horror art direction and atmosphere looks so excellent and I've heard the audio design is impressive too
Played for an hour last night. It's legit
It's funny the way beksinski's visual universe seeped into multiple high profile projects in the last few years (the medium, scorn obviously alongside Giger). The first example I can think of is Destiny, where his paintings were mentioned as a reference in a GDC talk. So I'm wondering: was he famous beforehand, his designs being implemented only as they become technically viable, or was he rediscovered and shared around by art directors through GDC talks and the like?
Yeah it looks great. It borrows a lot from the Aliens franchise.
looool its a blatant rip off of other games and movies.
An influence they forgot to mention in the video is Ghosts of Mars by John Carpenter.

Played it all day. The feels with the dualsense combine with the 3d audio and the excellent sound design makes it the most satisfying experience i’ve ever had in a video game no cap
Bro what headset did you use? I don't own a pair of 3D headsets and am looking for the best ones atm
@@Bar-los Going by what Mark Cerny said in his PS5 presentation the only thing you need is a good stereo headset that you can use through the audio jack of DualSense controller. Everything else when it comes to 3D audio is marketing really. The magic happens in the processing of the sound. That being said there are few concepts to be aware of when purchasing headphones like sound stage and stereo imaging that should make a difference.
@@Bar-los I’m not an expert in headphones, i got the ps5 pulse 3d which was in my budget but you can find better if you have the means i guess
@@Bar-los you probably already found a pair, but the steelseries Arctis 7p are the best imo for ps5 gaming. The pulse 3D has similar sound quality but has a really shitty mic
@@ejang96 Agreed. Arctis 7P are incredible with this game. You genuinely react to the soundscape around you without thinking - especially those teleporting tree monsters. I love everything about this game - absolute Elite Banger 💥

Absolutely LOVE this game. The artstyle and atmosphere is.. oppressive and alien. I love it. This could have been a walking simulator and I would have been very happy, however, the gameplay is excellent. Whoever decided that sprint should be that speed deserves a raise, movement speed allows so much better combat flow and a higher skill ceiling. No hitscan enemies and death's feel firm but fair. I didn't expect the psychological and cosmic horror to get to me but boy, after the third biome and it's boss i was genuinely creeped out and concerned not just for Selene's sanity going forward, but my own. Absolutely nailed it. Glad I paid full price for it.

Music to my ears, thank you Alex and John.
Really enjoying this so far. Loved resogun, first game I ever platinumed. Even noticed the resogun Easter egg inside the crashed ship 👌🏻
It really does look fantastic. The leap Housemarque have made with this game cannot be overstated: it is such phenomenal worldbuilding and atmosphere, the kind of rich extraneous lore-y stuff that wasn't there with Nex Machina or Resogun, brilliant as those games were. The use of ambient sound effects, incorporating the music as precise sound cues(crucial in a game like this, where you really need to have a sense of where threats are coming from), is brilliant and the whole place feels alien in a way that few games, few works in any medium, manage to convey.
On their first try Housemarque have created a world that is atmospherically and tonally not that far off Fromware's best stuff. In the same way that Bloodborne captured Lovecraftian horror in a way that no other medium has ever managed, Returnal does the same with alien sci-fi.
The first Alien, and that shot of the space jockey; that's the kind of feeling this game gives you as you play(as well as Prometheus, massively so, at least the good bits of that film, minimal as they were - there are a whole host of influences tbh, and they're mostly very good, like Existenz, Arrival, Annihilation, etc). It is alien, in the true sense of that word.
It made me think that videogames can convey the sense of an alien world in a way no other medium can: because you, the observer/reader, can't die while reading a book or watching a movie. There's no possibility of genuine loss...but there is in a game, especially twitch action games, most especially of all in a roguelike, where one death sends you back to the beginning of the loop. It's that kind of sense of constant danger and threat that makes an already alien world feel so much more alien than, say, the ridiculous booby-trapped, anti-plot-armoured planet in Alien Covenant. That place - in a stupid, nonsensical way - killed the stars of the film. But this place kills _you,_ and does so according to a set of very consistent if initially mysterious rules.
This game rules basically.
Great job housemarque.
Add the option to turn off the console or close the game and then continue playing. As in hades / dead cells / noita / etc.

I hardly doubt that, as even this A game, with a "modest" budget of propably around $30 million, has to move more than 3 million(mostly digital, otherwise it has to sell another two million) in order to be called a sound success.

A "true" triple A game for the current generation of hardware would come at $100+ million in production alone(large scale marketing might very well add another $100 million).
Due to out-of-control consumer expectations, marketing logic and almost limitless technical possibilies, budgets for big ass premium games became so extreme and therefore risky, they are by far not as profitable as they used to be.

@@Magnum-Gaming I've quite enjoyed God of War and Astro's Playroom. Thanks. Try to relax.
@@Magnum-Gaming who says he wasn't enjoying it?
Its so mesmerizing, environments are absolutely beautiful and so alien with true mystique. This game is so different than anything else I have ever played. Sense of wonder overcomes me when I just explore itd environment. Gameplay is 100% solid and the visual and aureal experience really blows my socks off. If this the quality of PS5 games in the future I have serious reason to be grateful that I was able to get this console.
Absolutely love that devs are starting to make 60fps the base! Resolution is nice, but 60 fps (especially in a game like this) is HUGE!
I was waiting for this video 💚
I'm waiting for the Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart video!
I’ve been playing this for the past few days and I really gotta say man this game is so dam good! For me it feels like Metroid Prime 2 + Axium verge
Completed Returnal. It was really great game. I do not remember game where I was actually afraid I will die which was fun. Especially since dying can move you back almost half of the game back. Yet when I died I never felt too distressed. Death is part of life ;) The story is also quite interesting and gives something to think about, the reality and what it is and stuff. On 4K monitor the lower internal resolution shows itself. Game looks sharp, not blurry and the general rendering style was not too distracting. On 1080p plasma game looks absolutely gorgeous and artifacts do not show itself. The use of Dualsense gamepad was absolutely fantastic and what I would expect from PS5 games. Having two shoot modes on trigger is a great idea and PS5 gamepad is definitely up to the task to be able to do very dynamic action and never push second fire mode by mistake. The trigger basically holds and I would like this trick to be used more on PS5. My personal recommendation of the games to get on PS5
0:53 Looking forward to John's next DF Retro analysis video that will be similar to either the Turok 1 one video or the Shadowman one video.

Love the use of the Genesis/Megadrive Alien 3 soundtrack lol
That game had a soundtrack that couldn’t be forgotten.
This game was built on UE4, I'm curious to see if they can improve the resolution/performance by making a "Definitive" edition ported to UE5 with the PS5's geometry shaders. I don't think we'll see the full potential of the PS5/XSX until next generation engines come out like UE5 with "sampler feedback/direct texture streaming" technology.
Don't know how much an ue5 port would change (just lacking knowledge) but a different approach with the upscaling could elevate this I think.
Wondering if AMDs announced upscaling method (which is supposed to be quite generalized) could be applied easily in such cases, else I don't know if they will touch it again in a major way before the next hardware refresh.
@@SimonVaIe So far UE5 knowledge is limited, we only know on the geometry side, the UE5 demo required the same amount of geometry processing power as Fortnite which is huge lol. The lighting and shaders will be the bottleneck on UE5. I hope AMD's upscaling method is generalized, but I believe they said it will require some developer involvement to get AMD Super Resolution imported into the game engine. I don't think we'll see an Nvidia Control Panel toggle for DLSS in the future unless AMD makes their upscaling method work in any game lol.
@@realforest oof did they? I thought super resolution was supposed to be driver level (of course amd hw), don't know if it would be the same on consoles though. And yeah dlss probably won't be driver level any time soon :(
On the geometry processing of the ue5 demo: that would be huge actually. I somehow doubt it, but Ill be happily proven wrong when the first games utilizing it are out, would be fantastic :D
@@SimonVaIe We can only hope AMD Super Resolution is at the driver level, then hopefully Nvidia comes up with a dlss driver level hotplug with DLSS 3.0 to compete with AMD.
I love that the 60fps is consistent, and will likely receive another patch for performance too. Frame rate is more important than anything else.
I hear that Genesis Alien 3 soundtrack in the background DF, that was my childhood :)
for me this is the most graphical impressive game by far.
Demon souls does it for me returnal a close second
It kinda looks like it could be on PS4 though
@@JamieRobert_ no way . Not with that frame rate
@@HI-pi1er not the frame rate but the graphics don’t look next gen to me and I’m a ps fan
@@JamieRobert_ the magic is not in the graphics but in the loading times .
I knew Alex was going to cover this the moment that it was announced to have ray tracing
And boy can’t I wait for ratchet and clank ;)
only RT global illumination calls tho, no raytraced visuals. Game looks phenomenal tho!
@@PCGGC Yes I know, and 1080p upscaled to 4K 🤣
@@PCGGC RT used for 3D audio too.
@@Arcona oh that's dope
today i bought this jewel in phisical disc for a few pennies. Still playing Resogun and AlienNation... and now this. thank you Housemarque.
This looks so good. I wish I had a PS5 to play it!
Also, I get every one of the references Alex made in terms of visual and narrative inspiration, and that makes this even more of a must have for me.
