- I can go on and on about how much Returnal has impressed me. Honestly, I’m a little surprised at how good it is. I always expected it to be good - it was always very likely that it would be, given Housemarque’s knack for creating great games - but this exceeds expectations.
Returnal is a swelling success on nearly every front- it’s got a captivating story that it tells very well, it’s got excellent combat that keeps you constantly engaged and on your toes, it’s got thoughtfully designed and smartly implemented mechanics that lend it oodles of depth and variety, it’s got engaging exploration that’s always rewarding, and it’s a visual and technical showcase that shows what the PS5 is capable of on multiple fronts. Frankly, it does more than anyone could have asked for.
Returnal is an excellent game. Play it.

Even if it keeps kicking my ass, I just can't stop playing. Returnal really is simply amazing.
It’s crazy how some people downplay the graphics of games on next-gen (current-gen) for being underwhelming when they are only going by clips on RUclips or their phones. The actual footage displayed from a PS5 on a OLED tv is incredible to the point that I wasn’t expecting it to be that good. It really is impressive to look at.
Hell even on a mid-upper end tv the PS5 and Series X looks amazing. OLED is another animal though 😄

I didn't have a 4k tv when I first got the PS5. About a month later I decided to invest in a OLED tv, it looks superb!
Some games even have the 120 refresh rate thing going on which makes it extra smooth :D

Man comparing it to vanquish a criminally underrated game just makes me sad we'll never get a sequel to that.
I believe the most criminally underrated game Platinum Games (they're the ones that put out Vanquish and Transformers Devastation which is also criminally underrated mostly due to the fact they loved to compare it with Fall of Cybertron rather than judging the game by it's own merits) have put out is Star Fox Zero all due to people not getting used to the control scheme. I'll tell you that once you get the controls fully grasped and mastered (which is more easier that the press made it to believe), you'll realize how great this game is in every aspect and how criminally underrated is

I am completely invested in this game, another Playstation masterpiece! I was hesitant at first to purchase Returnal so I rented it and wow am I suprised how addictive the gameplay is, I would say that $70 is justified as long as you have the patience and time to invest in this game and this is coming from someone who returned Demon Souls Remake, I think that says alot about how enjoyable and addicting Returnal is. 9/10

Day One for me. Can’t wait.
When I first started playing, I kept trying to get my Adrenaline to 5 and kept losing it, which ticked me off. Then, when I ran into the first boss, I tried to figure out the best way to power up against it. When I finally made it to the second biome, I was scared to step out the door because I thought I would have to fight the first boss again to get back if I died. Not true. The game has a fair progression of permanent unlocks - but you do have to face some tough encounters to bust through them and unlock them. As I continued to play and watched other players on Twitch to see their strategies, my play style adapted and my farming goals were refined and helped me get good. I learned to put priority where it mattered more and used appropriate avoidance tactics against enemies I knew were more dangerous - having a good run was just icing on the cake. In the end I died 115 times and spend 60 hours to finish the whole game (I didn't platinum it). After that, can now play through the whole game dying only 2-3 times. Ultimately, I enjoyed the experience so much, I'm considering deleting my game data and playing again from scratch.
I'd give the game an 8.5. It would be higher if the unfolding story was more satisfying. Instead, it left too much to interpretation. But the gameplay is so compelling, I just want to play more.

Great review, just curious where the game lost a point? Although a 10/10 game should be almost impossible to achieve, a 9 is an amazing score.
Loving the game since release, just reached the third biome, soon dive in and stream again.
What I’ve grown to appreciate about rougelites is the organic sense of progression. Even if you get permanent upgrades, you can just feel yourself getting better with every loop.
Yeah but if you a bio major you don’t got time to get good and play a million times.
@@vintageoriginallegit I feel you I’m about to finish a film degree (not exactly bio by any stretch but still time consuming).
What I did with Hades was do a single run per play session, usually before I went to bed. How much time I spent on it was completely dependent on how good I did. Took a while, but eventually I was clearing runs almost every time I played. Honestly I think rougelites are the perfect type of game to pick up for a quick session. It’ll take you a bit to get good sure but you’ll get there eventually.

@@vintageoriginallegit I honestly feel like roguelites are the best type of games for those who are busy. You can still have fun with 30 minutes runs. With other single player games, it takes hours for me to make meaningful progression

I like Hades, Dead Cells, and Enter the Gungeon. I like my PS5, and I enjoy good graphics and gameplay. I think I’ll enjoy this game just fine.

Great. It didn´t have to be perfect for me to buy it. Even with its minor flaws this looks like a blast so I am happy for Housemarque, they actually delivered something awesome.
Now to wait and see how good Rift Apart is in the end (Hopefully another excelent game for PS5).

Just tested it. you do keep the permanent stuff like the sword and permanent equipment youve found
Your guns start all the way over. You only keep key items (very few). It can be rough when you have a great weapon and lose it! But that's roguelike.
Reminds me of DooM in that you need to move and shoot at a fast pace. This is on my list but need to start control on my ps5 and finish god of war. Just completed ghost of tsushima which was epic! And spiderman Never played due to been on xbox so loving the PlayStation exclusives.

I'd recommend demons souls too. Only souls game I haven't played and I'm a huge fan of it
@@D4Deyo I beat demon souls twice when it 1st launched on the Ps5. Wow what a ride! I almost gave up the 1st time. Hell of worth it!
@@D4Deyo funny enough just completed that - Took me nearly 30 hours hahaha but got it done!!! Flamelurker was my burden but after I got passed him it was pure sailing. Beat the 2 flying monsters on the bridge first time and The false king aswell 💪💪
I got half way in demons souls and realized I should have spent most of my souls on magic. Haven't gone back since
@@christiansmith131 i didn't do magic until i went to level 3-1 which waz my final world before the end boss. Just save the mage in 4-2 and you will be fine 😁

Review is off the mark in a couple of areas - 1) given the run length (hours) ‘just one more run’ is a tough investment, and 2) no way does it maintain a flawless 60fps when things get crazy. There’s for sure some dropped frames and motion blur kicking in
Just strarted playing this earlier after playing elden ring. I was very lucky to beat the first boss at first try.

Loving this game. It’s challenging, no doubt, and it certainly punishes you for making mistakes, when you die it truly feels like you made a mistake. Then the cycle starts again and the next time you get just that little bit farther.
I cant even beat first boss yet. I like everything except no saving points and hate to start from the beginning of the spaceship

I'm with you mate, I've had 6 attempts at the 1st boss & I think I'm done with this game! I should have researched it more, if I'd known it was souls difficultly, I never would have pre ordered!

Unforgiving games like this with no saves and no difficulty settings are for a very small percentage of ppl. Not for me either.
I also heard returnal is supposed to get free dlc soon 😄
Lack of save options puts me off. I also didn't like Controls story, I found it to be very convoluted.

When the official instructions tells the player to use sleep mode as a save function, they need to add a legit save function. Love the hell out of the game and this is my one and only gripe. My kids also use my PS5 so I could come back mid run to Minecraft or Fortnite.

I have it and I do enjoy it but personally $70 is abit steep. If you enjoy this type of gameplay and have the extra money to spend by all means get it but if you are one to watch how much you spend maybe wait for a sale. In the end it's up to you.
All the new AAA titles are going to be $70. This one, and Demon's Souls, are both worth it.

This game is hard. I spent 5 hours playing last night, and can't beat the 1st boss Phike. Then at 3am, I realized I hadn't accomplished anything in the game after 5 hours other than collecting a few Ethers. :(

Very good game with incredible gameplay and an interesting story. But in my case, the fact that it was Rogue-Like didn't make the game accessible to me. The fact that it doesn't have a more grainy progression, dying in a boss in a biome after a 2-hour run is absurdly frustrating. This, for me, is very bad.
I didn't like this monotonous challenge of being trying, trying, and trying ... I know this is the purpose of the experience, however, unfortunately, this type of game did not work for me. And look, I played for over 18 hours. I admit that maybe I'm really bad. But, games that preserve progress seem more inclusive to guys like me, who don't have that much time and may be willing to try, try and try ...

@@shivammattoo33 you start at the very begining but if you already beat the boss of the level youre not required to fight it again, you just have to travel to the portal
So if I am 15 hours in and final boss kills me how much time would it take to fight final boss again ?

Outstanding game! I cannot seem to put it down. Every time I've died, and it's been a lot, has been because I screwed up and not the game being overly cheesy. I haven't progressed very far, but I feel myself getting better and a little further each run.
I have had this pre ordered for awhile digitally already downloaded. But I don't understand why they can't have the player enable checkpoints in option menu to cancel the roguelike manner of the game. I have not played it yet but I heard that's what makes it hard as it is a long game.
Because that is the point of roguelike/roguelite games.
The challenge is getting better every pass so you truely master the game. This is OG arcade gaming right here.

I am so addicted to this game I died 4 times and each time running through again made my a lot wiser and more aware on what to do no other game has done this really having replay value I guess you can say! Spoilers spoilers spoilers!!!!!! Having never played a Roguelike in all my 45 years I got to say that I love this game even though I loath " perma death " I got to say that this game manage to do it right today overall i got a great experience,minus 1 crash and my ps5 have never crash on me,needless to say that do to the nature of this game this is extremely bad,and although it was only 1 that's more than enough to be worried and maybe wait for next patch in fact Sony themselves knew that in this game a crash is serious stuff and when it crash it presents me with a totally new screen and a " sorry "
just rolled credits of act2 after 73 hours and 108 deaths. little more than an hour per dollar spent with act 3 still to come lol. I love this game and is by far my heaviest played game so fat this year. 10/10 would recommend

@@Jonadawong Housemarque is looking like a likely buy for Sony. Because they check all the boxes Sony is looking for.
@@GameMasterpg It is a possibility. Remember, there are gaming developers like Bungie who are fiercely independent. They left Activision and stated they want to be on their own. When you are a 1st party studio you must get approval from Sony for your projects.
You have seen what happened to the Days Gone developer for example. Some developers would rather the freedom vs the financial security.
Time will tell if they become 1st party but if they do it will be a great addition.

its tough to sell very well right now if you are doing a ps5 exclusive since less than 8 million have been sold, compared to over 100 milliion ps4s. Especially one thats different and isnt gonna appeal to as wide an audience. I guess the saving grace is gonna be people who bought a ps5 are looking for new games to play on them.

Sony, yet again, releases a GOTY worthy exclusive. Can we just go ahead an admit that Sony has owned the video game world since about 2014 and will continue to own, it seems, until they get tired of owning? Xbox had a nice run with the 360, but Sony is at the top to stay!
Idk guys, some reviewers are neglecting to mention the lack of a save state and how that can really hamper the experience. I think it’s an amazing game but one with a flaw that has to be mentioned for newcomers, especially considering how long a run typically takes. If this was on Xbox it would not be an issue due to their quick resume. On ps5, if you wanna jump from this to say resident evil village, you’re going to have to sacrifice that whole run. This of course in addition to power outages, crashes (which some have already reported and lost hour+ runs due to), and I think we have a problem.

Fully explored the first biome (based on how it generated for me on said run) got an astronaut, proficiency to 5, had a 5 carbine with sith lightning alt fire, died on first boss. Respawned an went right back to it. My girlfriend asked why I wasn't mad. I said "No, because now I know I can next run." I probably could've thst time but had low health going in and got sloppy twice so that third time meant death.
Id love to play this. But 80 euros? Nah.
All next-gen games will cost that much. It's the new standard for next-gen titles.
@@tyler-hp7oq i got resident evil 8 for 60 but i guess its cheaper because it releases on ps4 aswell. But 80 for a game is too much for me. I'll be waiting a while after release. I dont support the 80 model.
I don’t think he played the game fully cause everyone else is saying there are fps drops in some areas. It’s not a flawless 60 fps by any means.
Easy Allies review mentioned the is a day 1 patch meant to address the issues.
