The reason no one likes Lance isn’t the doping, it’s the bullying. Greg was a hero for having the courage to stand up to it, him and David Walsh, not easy.

    • @davidbranch2020

No he would be forgiven for the bullying if he had grew up and become a man.
He’s obviously got a lot of trauma from his father etc. that he's afraid to confront with real courage.
His image is of strength but his character is that of a weakling
The way he treated others comes from this lack of courage
He's got a Buzz Lightyear facade with the heart of a toy
People don’t like him because he’s a loser living a shallow life of infamy that so many confuse for fame

Just a slight correction on the so called hatred towards Lemond/ English speaking people. A lot of these riders came to Europe early on, most of them rode on French teams in the amateur ranks... a lot of them spoke French and rode on French teams. I can imagine communication wasn't always easy but Roche, Lemond, Millar, Anderson, Kelly all were protected riders / leaders of their respective teams. To be honest Lemond was always very popular in France because he was a lot more pleasant and nicer that Fignon and Hinault.

Greg Lemond could have been a Sagan type rider if he had wanted but Greg was in that unique situation of having not only the kick of a track sprinter, but also Greg could do long individual time trials with the very best, could climb high mountains better than the specialist climbers and Greg could ride Flanders and Paris Roubaix close to the top guys. Greg was something rare and special

LeMond is a throwback to earnest, genuine and unfiltered personalities. Lemond is truly one of the greats, and he and Kathy are pure Americana- the best of this nation. They are great human beings.
The backhanded compliments and Lance worship Anthony does is unsettling. Not because he likes and worships a doper and justifies the absolute evil he wrought, but that he turns around and tries to get Lemond on for views. I don't think he respects Lemond nearly as much as Lance. That's genuinely unsettling and offputting.
Anthony wishes he "challenged" Lemond on motors (a legitimate topic that has come up now that Femke Van Driesse interview released), yet completely softballs Hincapie and consistently defends Armstrong with "they were all dirty" b.s.
Still, props for giving Lemond a place - even if it's couched in with dopers and justifications....

    • @out_spocken
      @out_spocken Месяц назад +1

The problem with Lance is that it's as if everyone wants to think it was only lance that was doping and the majority were clean. When it's likely that the majority were doping. And that shit doesn't happen overnight. If Lance was doping when he came back you can bet there was a huge culture of it already going on. Maybe not as organised and refined...but still occurring. To dismiss this is as big an issue for many as your issue in people saying 'well everyone was'.
We'll never know. And Anthony has a right to like someone regardless of whether they doped or hurt others or not. The issues someone might have with Lance another wont. Equally the same is true of Lemond. Just because you might love Lemond as a human doesn't mean everyone should be as endeared to him too right?
I'm sure Anthony has no issue in admitting Lance treated OTHERS badly. But not everyone judges others on how they treat others but only on how they treat them. And that isn't necessarily wrong in any way.
It's quite conflicting to accept that a monster to someone might be amazing to someone else. It happens all the time. Rapists and murderers are often spoken about by people they know as 'wonderful'...but to their victims of course they aren't.
Heck...I know people once friends that think the worst of me over simple arguments during covid. Yet I know others think of me as amazing. Welcome to life. You can't have everyone love you and you don't have to hate everyone that anyone else hates.

Someone that comes back from cancer? Just saying.
Lemond was in hospital for 2 weeks. Cancer treatment would have been somewhere around 3-6...and that's basically having your body killed off.
I don't even think comparing 30 shotgun pellets at long range to cancer is remotely fair.
So again...2 wins after being accidentally shot in the back by a brother in law from long range or stage 3 testicular cancer than spread to his lungs, brain and a few other places. Yeah nah bro.
Given the choice I think most people would choose the shotgun injury.

Won 2 World’s. Won 1986 TDF solo with his own team working against him. Won 1989 by riding the fastest time trial in TDF history to overcome a 50 second deficit in less than what 20 miles to beat Fignot, missed 1987 and 1988 TDF due to being shot , probably would have won those TDF, nobody rode like him, always was in contention at the front and was totally clean. Lance Armstrong is a POS individual, a liar, a cheater and probably a psychopath as he has no remorse. He wasn't in the same universe talent wise. His first TDF he was on the juice and finished 39. Lemonf finished 3rd in his first TDF while sick with bronchitist for two weeks of the Tour. Talk to George again, ask him. WAS the sport in 2010 in THAT place... THEN ?
The answer to Armstrong/ Floyd was: "let's use motors"? IF Teams were behind this, WHO took it there ? Yet again, conspiracy...another documentary. Great!

Then all of a sudden won 2,3 tours and not just winning but dominating I just stopped watching in ‘93, I didn’t know it was epo at the time, but I thought something was strange. All these guys who are not favourites or we never even heard of are winning now. Andy hampsten? Everybody follows always Gregs version of what happened in 1985-1986. Although especially in 1986 strange things happened between the LVC team (no communication at nr 1) Hinault destroyed all the opposition. Andy Hampsten confims this in one of the docu's about the tour 1986. Also Greg did not ride alone. Riders a Zimmerman, Millar, Herrera chased Hinault while Greg just had to sit in the wheels. Lemond even asked Millar to ride for him and if he could let Millar win a stage he would give it to him. As Andy Hampsten said a few years back: Lemond only had to pick up the bodies (including Hinaults). Greg has an attitude over the years to blame everyone and everybody. Sort of Calimero. But mostly there are two sides of a story. Thanks for bringing the podcast Anthony.

Roadman, first thing I wanna say is great work on the interviews, love the channel. Second is that you are dead wrong on giving Armstrong so much leeway. It's not that everyone was doping and it was a level playing field. Lets remember in the 1999 Tour de France he got caught doping and Verbrugen told him to make it go away and he created a backdated prescription for cortisone, I believe it was, that would have been 2 year suspension if the rules were applied equally. The second time he got caught was in the 2001 Tour de Swiss and he paid that off with a $100,000 "donation" That would have been his second offense and a lifetime ban. Those are the two we know of. So no, it wasn't a level playing field. Armstrong had the UCI in his pocket, he never won because he was the best doped rider, he was the most corrupt. Now i will agree with you that having no winner for 7 years is dumb, give it to the 2nd place. My reasoning? Yes they all doped, no one else bribed the uci. And dont even get me started when a rider got too close for comfort like Ivan Mayo, Tyler Hamilton or Floyd Landis and Lance would call the uci and point the finger at them. Like I always say, Armstrong's story is that of corruption, not doping and smart people not seeing it drives me bananas.

I feel the need to remind people that Lemond’s bicycle company was bought by Trek a few years before Lance became their sponsored rider. Lemond often had input in the design of Trek road bikes. Lemond was the first to win the TdF on a carbon fiber bike that he helped design. Lemond knows a few things about bike frame design for racing. Through Trek, Lemond and Lance had a lot of professional interests. This wasn’t some verbal tiff at a distance. Calfee standard stock geometries are pretty much the standard French racing geometries from when Lemond was racing and training in France, and those standards haven’t changed much in 40 years. When Trek was developing OCLV frames, Lemond had some input in part of the process, but other than Lemond brand frames, Trek’s geometries are more generic consumer standard, but with slightly longer TT. Froome’s career is weird and doesn’t make much sense. I don’t think he was motor-doping, but something weird was going on there. His style was abrasive, and the 120 rpm attacks are unique. It makes one wonder, certainly.

On the difference of rider physique: In the 80s, you had 53-39 and 12-23? and you had to turn that around even on the steepest climbs, today you can have 11-34, that might already be the difference. Would be interesting if the average physique of good amateur riders has changed too. (And on Jonas Vingegard: He might be skinny af but he still has relatively muscular legs)

I would be curious to see what Greg thinks of the way teams in the 2000s have ruled out Giro Tour doubles due it being too physically demanding. Sepp Kuss showed it is very feasible to ride 2 grand tour 3 week races at the highest level a month apart. Also what does Greg think of the way tour GC guys avoided the cobbles for decades, the lack of long time trials in 3 week tours and how it changes the GC tactics. Pro cycling stats shows Greg in 1990 raced a huge number of days in the 7 weeks before TDF, finishing both Giro and Tour de Suisse pre TDF.

But it saddens me that both you and posters whom you quote here continue to publicize his unsubstantiated insinuations of "motor doping" by top pro stars who rode well after his own retirement. Yes, there is a documented case of motor doping by a Dutch U23 cyclocross rider in 2016, and of course there may be other cases. But feeding the rumor mill with claims lacking any evidence is not the way to deal with these issues.

I'm paraphrasing, but I'm pretty sure he compared a sudden cadence increase minus the heart rate spike and spike in wattage. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that. Also, he said he knows people closely involved in the sport who have said that motor doping is a fact. Other than demanding sources, how can you push back on that? 18:00: I'm sure you've read Rough Ride (?) by Kimmage. Kimmage doesn't accuse LeMond of doping, but nor did he accuse Hinault or Kelly either. But the way he describes the supersonic efforts of those riders makes you wonder. Sadly rights comes from blood being split. The benefits we have now and infrastructure and rules we cyclists benefit from have come from other cyclists being hit because they chose to be right than ceding this.
I get it. I do. I've been hit plenty of times and once enough to change the direction of my life. But I will continue to ride on roads and fight for that right for me and other cyclists.

I’m tired of people saying that everyone was doping when Lance won and therefore he was rightfully the winner. That is sooo wrong. For starters, I don’t believe that absolutely everyone was doping. Unfortunately we’ll never know for sure, but even if the person who finished 64th was the top placing rider to never dope, then that person is the rightful winner. They are the only rider who followed the rules…everyone else cut the course. Secondly, even if absolutely everyone was doping it still doesn’t make it a level playing field. Lance may have benefited 30% from doping and another rider may have benefited only 5% even if they were on the exact same doping plan. If you lined up 1000 people and gave them all the same drugs you’ll see that the benefits and side effects vary from person to person, therefore the only and I mean only level playing field would be if no one ever took any PEDs. I can’t cheer for anyone who cheats…whether they are named Lance or not.

There's a lot of nuance to be had in that whole debate. Jan Ullrich obviously recently admitted to using Epo, and I thought his take on it was very interesting. He said that he sees himself as a legitimate Tour winner, because he doesn't feel like he cheated any of his direct competitors for the Tour win, since they used the same drugs. But at the same time he said that he cheated all of those who weren't actually there to complete, because they decided not to be a part of the rotten system that was pro cycling at that time.

The reason I don't like Lance is Lemond pushed World Tour Cycling into the American lexicon, Lance made us think we could dominate. The cheating destroyed that and as much as some people pretend, America has completely lost interest in competitive road cycling. Netflix might revive that a bit with Unchanged but the average American will wait for a massive US born hero to bring back any interest in watching the World Tour. Lance cheated while wearing a US sponsored jersey. He took pride to shame and the sport hasn't recovered in the US since.
