The first time I heard artillery fire was a battery of 105mm guns firing about 70m behind me just as I was dozing off for a quick nap behind the driver's sticks of an M113.
The boom and the sound of the rounds tearing through the sky jolted me wide awake.
I thought the world was ending.
And then the Hornet flew over to drop a couple of bombs on target because sometimes artillery isn't enough.
      Apprarently!

@@WinahhTaylahh While flight controls are assisted by computers, the actual navigation during events like Riverfire is still largely visual. Pilots rely on their familiarity with the terrain and manual control, using maps that aren't as sophisticated as Google Maps. The technology aids flight stability, but navigation remains a pilot-driven task, especially for precision flying like this.

Back then there was almost a fully uninterrupted and panoramic view from there when looking down to Albion, towards the Valley and across to the city skyline including the Story Bridge then all the way around to Mt Cootha, the night was warm, super clear and very still, he didn't shut down the burner until he must've been well over Moreton Bay, it lit up the entire inner Northern and inner Western suburbs for as far as we could see and most likely all of the Bayside suburbs too, the awesome sound and it's window rattling reverberations definately made it all an amazing experience I'll never forget!🇦🇺👍🔥
