Melbourne is being 'choked up' after becoming Australia's most populous city

- Sky News host Andrew Bolt says Melbourne has become Australia’s “biggest city” and has forced people to be stuffed into small housing blocks miles from the city centre.
“Melbourne is being choked up, stuffed up by this massive growth,” Mr Bolt said.
I think it's the high immigration intake but also poor governance from Andrews causing Melbourne to become much less liveable
By 2040 80% of people will not be driving as they won't be able to afford and run an electric car. So roads will be empty except for the elite 20%.

The people of Africa have multiplied like rabbits. Their tribes have been fighting each other for centuries. Now, thanks to the UN Convention on Refugees, they are all now entitled to a share of our infrastructure, public services, and the receipts from our agriculture and mineral exports, because everyone in Africa can claim to be "persecuted" due to their ethnicity or religion.

Melbourne imported the third world and became the third world.
Melbourne has become unliveable. @@MrRatclima lowering migration means we have to go without. manufacturing in China is comming to an end, Mexico, USA, Vietnam etc etc are ramping up, but will never replace China in totality. We will have to start making things in house. What we can't make, we just wont be able to buy.....at any price. We need 6 million immigrants under 35 in the next decade, JUST TO MAINTAIN OUR CURRENT POPULATION when it comes to 2050. If we don't we will not have the cohort of young people to stimulate demand, or taxpayers to fund pensions, hospitals, schools etc. Search for Peter Zeihan on demogarphics and aging populations. It's simple demographics and math. Where I live, in the country, there is not enough people to make business viable, or entice new business. We need a minimum of 80 million people (but not all crammed into Sydney and Melbourne). We need a crisis to poke government and business into action, that's how Australia rolls. As for what city people think, I simply don'r care. City people live in a bubble of privilage (because you have enough people). BTW - the nearest all night chemist to me is a 240km round trip.
U need to move back to your country. Don't u think so.
Economist says a city to be productive needs 15 Million people so we Australia's population has to grow by 50 Million for this to happen. Lets see can we grow food in the desert, raise cattle in the desert well we may have to learn and two how are we going to feed the one quarter of the world with 75 Million in Australia. Everyone knows countries with a large population cannot feed itself China India so when are we going and learn and stop and realise we do not need to go past 25 Million people.
Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result always seems more stupid than insane to me.

+1 this mass immigration madness started with late era (~2005) John Howard and if you draw a trend line every government since has ramped immigration up, all of it without any kind of mandate. As you point out Tony Abbott ran an election promising to cut immigration but once in power he just ramped it up even higher to paper over the cracks of a slowing economy with some quantitative peopling. Compare CBD apartment prices between Melbourne and Sydney. Melbourne is way cheaper to live.
Melbourne has superior geography for urban sprawl and new house building. Sydney is constrained by the eastern coastline and the blue mountains in the west, there’s less space to build new suburbs in Sydney.

Immigrants crowd up the infrastructure that they didn't pay for and will never pay for. They contribute to the need for still more infrastructure that we will all have to pay for, not just the newcomers who make it necessary.
Of course the construction companies just love their taxpayer funded projects. So do their employees, many of them foreign. And taxpayers' money spent, counts as GDP, which governments can brag about, when it is, in fact, a drain on households.

This is why I live in Brisbane - 2.5 million people and growing at a reasonable rate - has all the big city amenities but of course much smaller than Sydney or Melbourne but has great potential to grow and expand. If only Sydney and Melbourne are being marketed as global cities, migrants are always going to land in one of those places first. Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth are all amazing cities too - they just need the push to be seen on the same level so that migrants get more city options to choose from and are spread out.

If a huge chunk of your population is retirees, how else but through unfettered immigration do you expect to have enough workers for them? That's why the population is so high.
A huge chunk are not retirees. 16% are over 65.
@@brettmitchell1777 For how long though? As the Boomers move through the system, there'll be more retirees living for longer than ever before in the country's history. And they'll be able to sell the property they got relatively cheaply to fund their two or three decades of retirement, keepin their spending power and consumption high. As this is unprecedented in Australia (that many retired living that long) the government is boosting the numbers of those of working age so that there isn't massive labour shortages.

All the longer term residents are moving here to South East Queensland and the population in Melbourne is being replaced by recent arrivals from abroad.
Infrastructure fails when huge growth occurs and no investment too the existing infrastructure is made
The world changes, and cities grow. Was there a specific size Melbourne should stay at, or grow by annually. Here conservatives go again trying to conserve some vague thing from some vague point in the past. A more helpful discussion would be about how Australian cities grow, and the zoning laws that impact the built environment. New suburbs generally don't have a town centre or main street. We don't build enough mixed use residential, retail, and commercial areas. Housing is separate from everything else which requires a car every time you leave your house. Public transport is a political football between left and right, and spending billions on roads doesn't get the same scrutiny. Making roads wider won't make traffic go away.
Yes, cities grow. Organically, let nature take its course. Dumping (literally) hundreds of thousands of souls from abroad into a small geographical area within a short period of time is only asking for trouble.
It took Melbourne 170 years to hit 3.3m people. Through extreme immigration, we'll grow by that much again in 35 to 40 years. That there is the problem.
Too much population growth too fast. You cannot "plan" for that. And we are all suffering the consequences.
If cities grew as a result of our own reproduction, then we should bear the cost of a denser population.
But Australia's growth is due to foreigners brought in from cultures that gave the world female genital mutilation, foot-binding, caste, child marriage, legal wife-beating, polygamy and slavery. We did not conceive these people and we should not be forced to share our inheritance with them.
Too bad about the wildlife going extinct due to habitat destruction due to overpopulation. Oh yeah - we are all supposed to live in towers and ride bikes, except the millionaire politicians and developers of course.
