This is a video of the Norwegian ship Skandi Vega in action!
Skandi Vega is a large and powerful vessel designed for deepwater anchor handling during demanding environmental conditions.
The Bollard pull is 350 ton and the winches can pull 500 ton.
The Ship is 110 meters long and the Breadth is 24 meters and can room 88 persons
The vessel is mostly operating in The North Sea!
Thank you for showing Anchor handling. It's amazing that the set of these anchor's hold those big Rigs in perfect position.
This is a super cool video, thanks for sharing. Not sure why everyone is complaining about a video that shows a process that they otherwise could have gone a lifetime without seeing
Thank you :)
anchor handlers; the real men of the offshore.
Yeah. Thank you for the comment:)
Excellent
Thank you :)
Whose 13 yr old nephew's garage band supplied the audio?
Don’t know there names 🤷🏼♂️
Nice one mate, one of my friend working in DOF
Mr. Baysan that's my friend working in skandi Vietnam one time
Capabilities
Built to meet future environmental standards, the vessel is
fuel efficient and clean design classed, thus having the capability
to work in most of the world’s offshore oil and gas precincts.
At 109m long, operating capabilities include a working
moonpool, “Safe Deck” manipulator crane system, an anchor
recovery frame, a main winch capacity of 500 T and secondary
of 170 T and a bollard pull of 350 T.
The Skandi Vega has also an integrated ODIM Anchor Recovery
Frame (ARF) and a large working deck area of 1,070 m2
.
In addition, one Kystdesign ROV is placed inside the hull’s
integrated hangar on the starboard side.
I hate this trendy editing with shots only a couple of seconds long and numerous fades to black. It is very annoying to watch. Add some inappropriate music and you get yet another reason why RUclips is dying.
Thank you for the feedback. Maybe you would like my other videos better;)
Cool music😉
Thanks:)
Thanks sharing we have it a lot hotter on deck in Australia 🇦🇺You guys look like good seafarers👍🏻Nice work
Yes, we try our best:) Must be nice to have it warm and good🙌🏼
@@norway.maritimehaha, my one time working on anchors was in WA as a cadet. We were moving them around on deck getting ready to set after a rig tow.
Air temp 35-40 degrees in the open. The anchors themselves were uncomfortable to touch for more than about 15 seconds even through cowhide gloves 😂 probably somewhere in the region of 45-50 degrees on the deck out of the wind and around 70 in the anchors when hooking slings to the various bits of mooring gear stored in them.
It was rough 😅 fun though. Sadly I wasn't able to stay on for the mooring itself. Visa issues with regards to the ship being imported to Oz for the contract duration.
5 years later and I'm finally getting my DP in hopes of getting to head out on an AHTS again 👍 those 4 weeks were the best of my cadetship by far. Maersk Master. Lovely boat. Kleven built.
It looked very interesting. I wish I knew what they were doing.
So do they!
haha
An explanation would be nice, like why are they bashing those spikes into the chains?
And that full volume music throughout adds nothing.
Dave Wilson Simple really, the spike is being used to remove a pin that is holding the shackle together (the large lump of metal they are working on, it holds two lengths of chain together, it comes in three pieces all joined by that pin) that pin is covered by a lump of lead to make sure it doesn't fall out! If it fell out the shackle would fall apart and that would be disastrous for the whole job. I hope that explains things to your satisfaction?
Mike Walrus thanks very much. This sort of stuff is really interesting but for the uninitiated it’s not obvious as to what’s happening.
Why don't people realize that when they post niche content the people who view it actually want to HEAR what's going on? Stupid free-library soundtracks are for viral videos, I want to actually hear the ambiance of the ship.
Thank you for the comment and for that you liked the content. The video is a viral video;)
@@norway.maritime Thanks for making an ass of yourself by arguing with people in the comments, so everybody can see why your video has a 50% dislike rating.
@@gastonbell108 Thank you for your nice comments. You seam like a nice person :)

A lot of loud music and not much anchors.
It’s a lot of anchors. If you like anchors you can watch my other videos;)
Very interested video
Thank you:)
Soooo....what exactly are these blokes doing? And a great big thank you to the inventor of the mute button
Why does seemingly everyone accompany an otherwise interesting video with horrendous loud musac? If you must - please keep it in the background.
Thank you for the feedback. Maybe you would like my other videos better:)
Nice music!
Thanks:)
im getting seasick looking at this !
Fantastic video, please post more videos of the big anchor handling ships and work but maybe with no music?.

They actually got one of their ships the far sentinel in my local port right now
Cool:)
Making the screen go dark every time you change views is beyond aggravating.
I think it’s cool;)
Nice video of real men working. I don't know how you where able to shoot that. If you got caught with a camera like that on board in the GOM you got a quick ride back and possibly out a go pro.
Thank you:) the camera is actually owned by the ship:)
awesome upload !....she is a beast

Too bad they had such an amateur camera operator. Lose the music and actually show what is happening withouit making evewryone seasick.
Sorry that you felt like that. I was working and filming at the same time. Maybe you would like my other videos better:)
Music is to loud I think I must have blinked and missed the anchors. If this is what you call “in action”, I’d hate to see it at rest.
Sorry that you felt like that:/
Stian, honestly dude; thanks for posting the interesting vid. Maybe for music instead, you could have gone with something a little more nautical and a bit less volume. I would settle for POTC(any of the 19 movies). Also if you could explain a little(if you know) about what is going on... Other than that, tyfp.
Thank you for the feedback:) maybe you would like my other videos better:)
I couldn't finish the video.... no music! The natural sounds of the job.... jez...
Sorry that you felt like that. Maybe you would like my other videos:)
Looked interesting but couldn’t follow what was going on, and actually it turned out to be just annoying to watch with all the jumping around, quick shots, fading in and out.
Thank you for the feedback. Sorry that you felt like that. Maybe you would like my other videos:)
Amazing video. Ancherhandler!!!
Might be the worlds largest AHT but they still have the same old problems we had on the small ones!
Anchors bigger and heavier, also lay in much deeper water, hence longer chain therefore heavier weight to handle.
Sure
The mighty Hercules, I’ve done a few projects on her.
A very capable vessel but not the biggest I think mearsk have a bigger one
The mighty Skandi Vega
👍👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you:)
Are they retrieving an anchor another ship has had to abandon? I've heard of that happening. A bit impressionistic, the video, but heh!
Anchor is for an oil platform:)
@@norway.maritime Thanks
Great video, but I assure you, you don't need the rock music!
Thank you. I know I didn’t need the music
I have no idea what they were trying to accomplish
From what little I know (worked in a marine engine shop in the mid 60s), anchor chains that are exposed to both sea and air corrode pretty quick; stuff that never sees air lasts longer. I'd hazard a guess that they were replacing the top portions of anchor chain by hammering the keeper pins out of split rings, attaching new chain with either new split rings or reusing the old ones, then hammering new keeper pins back in.
Oh, yeah, classic technique to free a pin - or frozen bolt - is an oxy-acetylene torch with a wide flame.
The guys seemed to mostly be wearing eye protection, but didn't see any ear protection and impact noise (like from banging a sledge on a pin) can do ya in.
Rig move for an oil rig:)
Who is playing drums while there people are working hard?
The captain 😄⚓️
As an old Smit-lloyd seaman (40 odd years ago) I was interested in watching how things where done nowadays. Sadly the film is rubbish.
Thank you for the comment duppie
@master mariner You shuld watch my other videos ;)
That was a interesting piece of music I guess there is no shame in subbing for the tunes is there? I would listen to that again.
Thank you for the feedback;)
Amazing video. Hard working men
Not a clue what's happening in the video
Anchorhandling for an oil rig:)
I get a lot of these "anchor handling" recommendations. No idea why anchor handling is in such demand.
Take your typical oil or gas platform...as well as being tied and anchored vertically to the ocean floor...they also have 3-4 anchors positioned around them to stop any drift as well as any lateral movement. Every so often these anchors move of their own accord and have to be re-positioned. But when that gas or oil field becomes depleted the rig has to be moved so the anchors have to be pulled up thats when these tugs are called in. Not just to tow the rig but to cart the anchors as well to the new field...typical anchor weight... any between ten to twenty five tons. Their are different shapes sizes and model of anchor...the crew is briefed beforehand on the exact type/model they are pulling up or putting down. Very very dangerous but necessary job.
It’s cool
Guess I need more room for subscriptions

Back ground music was so bad, I quit watching and moved on, too bad it looked liked a video I like.

Biggest hammer for Kenter coupling, funny they use the same hammers on smaller anchor handlers for same couplings
Need big hammers
I see the world's biggest anchorhandler still needs a hamer
Actually we have many hammers
I hate when the sea state is like this. not big, but short intervals and that makes me ill sometimes lol
Sorry for making you ill:/
They don't make an app for that....hard work!
Yeah. Hard work
Most jobs nowadays are "adult day care" or "woman vacation" jobs so they don't have to raise kids. This stuff is real work.
good vid - spoiled only by all the noise/music..
Thank you. Maybe you would like my other videos better:)
Dude, please focus on one thing for more than five seconds... the video is very hard to watch.
Maybe you would like my other videos better:)
Commenting about what they are doing will be way more interesting instead of that stupid music
Thank you for the feedback:)
They salvage anchors that have been cut of from the ship
No they don't the lift up rig's anchors to move the rig.
soo... wheres the anchor??
There's like 10 of them in the video - probably a bit bigger than what you were thinking...
Mostly on deck
First of all the music sucks. Commentary would be helpful and far the cameraman almost made me sick.
Thank you for the comment. And sorry for that i almost made you sick
often see this ship in the city never knew what it does
And now you know:)
Breaking those couplings is a pain in the ass
Yes it is;)
I am sure the use of burning equipment used would not impress Lloyds, DNV, BV or insurance company looks like a slip to put it on youtube!
Sorry that you felt like that
Why were they hosing down the anchor at 1:22?
dirty after being on the seafloor and saltwater is bad.
Getting the clay and mud off so you dont have to slip around in it on the deck :) also the bases dont want their anchors delivered with clay its a safety hazard :) PS the monitor used to hose down the anchor uses saltwater ;)
Cool video, maybe next time give a little more time before cutting in the next scene, it was hard to tell what was going on in some shots because it would fade out really quick.
Thank you for the feedback. Maybe you would like my other videos better:)
Iron men on iron chains.

Next time spray more water on the lense
It gives a great visual effect, doesn't it? A sort of faded romantic look.
ScooterZn Yep. I’d say if it’s done right, it can give a warm, nostalgic, or even euphoric feeling to almost anything.
Thank you for the feedback. Next time I will
@master mariner LOL.. I do now.. Total inland boater. Enough time on the north sea to make me a chicken for life! Hats off to all mariners. Nothing but respect to you all. Cheers!
I don't think is the biggest AHTS in the world.
Not now. But it was the biggest;)
So basically this thing cruises around F'ing with peoples anchors?
Looks exciting but hard work, I'd rather go fishing
But then you'd miss out on filet of anchor, or frozen anchor sticks, etc.
It’s hard work
How big is the anchor?
12 tonnes generally
18 ton
A Question: What is the name of the link that they drive the pin into and out of that joins two lengths of chain?
Kenterlinks are most common. But you also have pearlinks and c-links. And TAS :)
the one shown in the video was a ramfor but commonly called a kenter, a pear linked is used to join parts of the system of differing sizes
Those are called SPLIT links
I guess they work on anchors of the oil rigs, repair and maintenace. And need practice with the sledgehammer.
They pull the anchors the the rig moves
Nevilleysamy its tiring work. Sledgehammer from dawn till night. shackle, thick wire, I have gone to the point using hook to drag the bolts. because of so much sledgehamming you lost focus just hammering nonsense.
@@sickedhero if you learned using a sledge hammer from a qualified Smith you might be better off.. ⚒️
If all else fails, FIREWRENCH!

I'll I can say is "Cloverfield"!
Something like that;)
What are those large style of openable chain links called? The smaller ones we use in forestry are called hammerlocks.
Tu te Kohe they’re called big f...ing hammer locks. Lol
master link, just like a bicycle
kenter links
These are called ballast links because they are held together by a cotter pin.
cotter pins are split. kenter links use a tapered pin with a lead plug.
What ?
It’s anchorhandling;)
@@norway.maritime big Chains. mostly. I suppose that is anchors? I am from Rocky Mountains so know nothing about anchors to big and old that a Big ship is needed to handle them?

What do you want me to do with the music??
@@norway.maritime imo everyone wants hear the hammering, diesel engines, yelling, chain sliding across steel decks, hydraulic winches, a little narration,, etc. Music is rarely appropriate for working videos.
The Skansen is still better though ;) Is Toni Macaroni the safety coach still bouncing around the fleet?
This isn't the worlds largest anchor, look on the foc'sle of an aircraft carrier, ours weighed 120 tons, 60 tons each.
Stephen Atkison I think the emphasis was on the “handler” not the anchor size, from what I understand these guys set up anchors for deep sea platforms.
this ship is an anchor handler, used for towing and setting up and laying the anchors on semi submersible rigs involved in oil exploration
I know you spelled according to pronunciation, but I'm pretty sure regardless of pronunciation you should still spell the word correctly. I promise we'd know the pronunciation if you'll spell it right. To those unawares....Forecastle.
That foc'sle word is pronounced forecastle for those who want correct spelling.I was using navy terminology
@@stephenatkison2914 As for holding power A Steve Priz anchor will have more holding power than an aircraft carrier's anchor any day.

It’s anchorhandling;)
Why does the camera man have jump all over the place? Stand still like you would if you wewre watching the guys work. This artsy fartsy BS is just annoying and adds NOTHING to the video./
What are you talking about? The camera is mounted to the guy's helmet. His working, swinging a sledge, hosing down an anchor. What artsy fartsy BS are you talking about? It's not some camera man following the crew around, it's a crew member filming the work he's doing. This isn't meant to be some educational or promotional video, and it's not for a TV show, the guy can't just place himself to get the perfect shot while watching others do the work, he's on the clock. How can one be as braindead as yourself and still figure out how to turn on a computer?
I was working and filming at the same time. Sorry for that
What the f*ck am I watching and what are they doing and why?
