    Capabilities
Built to meet future environmental standards, the vessel is
fuel efficient and clean design classed, thus having the capability
to work in most of the world’s offshore oil and gas precincts.
At 109m long, operating capabilities include a working
moonpool, “Safe Deck” manipulator crane system, an anchor
recovery frame, a main winch capacity of 500 T and secondary
    of 170 T and a bollard pull of 350 T.
The Skandi Vega has also an integrated ODIM Anchor Recovery
Frame (ARF) and a large working deck area of 1,070 m2
    .
In addition, one Kystdesign ROV is placed inside the hull’s
integrated hangar on the starboard side.

@@norway.maritimehaha, my one time working on anchors was in WA as a cadet. We were moving them around on deck getting ready to set after a rig tow.
Air temp 35-40 degrees in the open. The anchors themselves were uncomfortable to touch for more than about 15 seconds even through cowhide gloves 😂 probably somewhere in the region of 45-50 degrees on the deck out of the wind and around 70 in the anchors when hooking slings to the various bits of mooring gear stored in them.
It was rough 😅 fun though. Sadly I wasn't able to stay on for the mooring itself. Visa issues with regards to the ship being imported to Oz for the contract duration.
5 years later and I'm finally getting my DP in hopes of getting to head out on an AHTS again 👍 those 4 weeks were the best of my cadetship by far. Maersk Master. Lovely boat. Kleven built.

And that full volume music throughout adds nothing.

    • @mikewalrus4763
      @mikewalrus4763 6 лет назад +8

Dave Wilson Simple really, the spike is being used to remove a pin that is holding the shackle together (the large lump of metal they are working on, it holds two lengths of chain together, it comes in three pieces all joined by that pin) that pin is covered by a lump of lead to make sure it doesn't fall out! If it fell out the shackle would fall apart and that would be disastrous for the whole job. I hope that explains things to your satisfaction?

From what little I know (worked in a marine engine shop in the mid 60s), anchor chains that are exposed to both sea and air corrode pretty quick; stuff that never sees air lasts longer. I'd hazard a guess that they were replacing the top portions of anchor chain by hammering the keeper pins out of split rings, attaching new chain with either new split rings or reusing the old ones, then hammering new keeper pins back in.
Oh, yeah, classic technique to free a pin - or frozen bolt - is an oxy-acetylene torch with a wide flame.
The guys seemed to mostly be wearing eye protection, but didn't see any ear protection and impact noise (like from banging a sledge on a pin) can do ya in.

    • @russellking9762

Take your typical oil or gas platform...as well as being tied and anchored vertically to the ocean floor...they also have 3-4 anchors positioned around them to stop any drift as well as any lateral movement. Every so often these anchors move of their own accord and have to be re-positioned. But when that gas or oil field becomes depleted the rig has to be moved so the anchors have to be pulled up thats when these tugs are called in. Not just to tow the rig but to cart the anchors as well to the new field...typical anchor weight... any between ten to twenty five tons. Their are different shapes sizes and model of anchor...the crew is briefed beforehand on the exact type/model they are pulling up or putting down. Very very dangerous but necessary job.

What are you talking about? The camera is mounted to the guy's helmet. His working, swinging a sledge, hosing down an anchor. What artsy fartsy BS are you talking about? It's not some camera man following the crew around, it's a crew member filming the work he's doing. This isn't meant to be some educational or promotional video, and it's not for a TV show, the guy can't just place himself to get the perfect shot while watching others do the work, he's on the clock. How can one be as braindead as yourself and still figure out how to turn on a computer?
