- Thanks for watching! Let me know what questions you have. Would love to answer. What are your thoughts on a $350 flannel? Preposterous? Heirloom? In between?
Iron Heart America Website: tinyurl.com/bdd...
These are also available at a lot of retailers... sometimes you can find sales. If I had waited 2 weeks I could have snagged this at 15% off, but you live and learn! :)
I have one UHF myself that I picked up for just under $300 on a Black Friday sale in 2022. It is by far my favorite flannel and it definitely has a special feel about it that, for me, makes it worth what I paid. If I can fine another sale I’ll definitely try to pick up another one.
Nice! I think next season I'm going to watch for sales a lot more closely in regards to these shirts, for sure. Good plan and thanks for the comment, bro!
I love flannels so much I'm thinking about just ponying up the full price for one lol...
That macro lens is a game changer for your channel!
Aaahhh thanks! I'm glad someone thinks so! It's fun to shoot things like this up close because how the fabric is made and feels really intests me. Tight vs loose weave, heavily or unbrushed, etc!
I believe that Iron Heart is worth the retail price because their high quality and manufacturing process comes at a price. It's not fast fashion. Unfortunately though that price is just to high for my limited budget. I have just counted my eleven items of clothing by Iron Heart, jeans, shirts, jackets and a coat. And I have only bought two of them new, the rest I got on eBay, some things less than half the retail price, and fortunately have never once been disappointed with the quality and size.
Great point and great post. I think we should all be more open to buying second hand high quality items. 👍
Great review, Patrick. I appreciated the assessment you gave. It’s more than I’m willing to spend on a flannel, but they are sweet. I don’t own any, but would like to (eventually) hear your thoughts on a UES flannel. I know you mentioned them and I’ve seen positive reviews on theirs.
Thanks, J! And that's fair. It feels weird knowing people know what I paid for it sometimes. I will certainly pick up a UES... Probably not until next fall though. 👍
Straight forward and to the point. Perfect summation.
Trying to be more straightforward this year! I tend to ramble sometimes. Thanks!
Great job on sizing, in my opinion I'd rather have fewer pieces of high quality. UES and Iron Heart are my favorites so far. Looks great. I think once you try a Western UHF you might not go back, the snaps are just the absolute best.
Thanks a bunch, Michael! The more stuff I get while running this channel, the more and more I agree. I can't wear everything ever day, and sometimes it's just hard to put on a "lesser" item when I have nicer things available to wear. I'm glad you mentioned the western... I was looking at them last night and I think I'll 100% be going western next time I get one. And also really want to try out UES. CHeers, mate!
What is your typical approach when washing something like this? I am pretty careful with mine, hand wash cold, hang dry but I do feel like they shrink 3-5% which isn't much but something to consider if if fits slightly tight (or loose). I feel like I finally have my sizes dialed in pretty good now. Just a heads up Josh at Iron Shop Provisions is great to work with too.@@rockymtnstyle
I've only washed it once and I did cold gentle cycle, then took it out and laid it flat to dry. Before it was completely dry (after maybe 8 hrs of sitting on the carpet) I put it on so the shoulders should mould to mine a bit, then I wore it for 10-15 minutes, and then put it back on the ground to dry. Probably overkill! I didn't see much shrink (if any) at all for the first wash. Yeah - Josh is great! I bought a 12oz IH whipcord from him and he helped me pick a size. I think I'll be doing some content on his new brand also (A New Medium).
I never was into flannels until I tried a Duluth Trading flannel. They are, what I would call, expensive, but I tried one. The fit is just right for me, large, and even the "burley" weight is still comfortable. To save cost I shop the late January, early February sales. Like you said, they look great after several wearings. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing, Michael! I do like my burlyweight I have!
I got my IH flannel last winter after debating the cost…. And now it’s the only flannel I want to wear. It just feels so great! The weight can be a mid layer, or a light jacket. It’s so comfy and feels like a pair of pj’s, but looks so good. I do think this is a case of owning less, but owning better. I have other nice flannels, but my cost per wear on the IH is far less because of the constant wear I’m getting. My only complaint, is the buttons. I wish they were a touch bigger and find they don’t want to hold that thick fabric together when you button it up sometimes. All in all, I WILL be getting another at some point.
I feel you on the buttons! They are easy to manipulate but I do wish that we're 15% bigger maybe. And totally agree on the rest too. I wish more folks would take the plunge. Really good stuff. My next will be a western version with snaps I think.
This is way out of my price range for a shirt. But it does look really great. Nice objective look at it. Now that Iron Heart jacket!
Nothing wrong with that! If I didn't have a YT channel I'd have never pulled the trigger... but since I did... I do love it! :) Thanks for stoppin' by, brother!
What's the value of a well-crafted piece of garment? I've been collecting flannels since really discovering my personal style back in 2014, beginning with a "heavy" IHSH-086 in blue/white herringbone (lighter than UHF). I didn't know what I was really getting into, other than it was absolutely beautiful when I tried it on. I also thought that I overpayed, and that the flannel is ultimately worth less money. TEN YEARS LATER... the shirt is still going strong and looking impeccable. There has been no rips or undone seams, no damage and no significant wear and tear. I don't baby these shirts, I wash them when they smell bad and I throw them around on my bed and hang them in random places. Every year, I budget myself to purchase one or two IH flannels (sometimes three), and I honestly haven't regretted a single one. They will literally last 15, 20, 25+ years if you take normal care of them and rotate them with other clothing.
Thanks so much for this great comment. I'm very encouraged to hear about the longevity! I actually just bought my 2nd... The 12oz Slub red/gray western cut. Waiting for me in the mailbox right now!
That's cool, I just bought the work shirt with that slubby grey fabric. Looking forward to it as well!
Awesome!! Wearing mine right now... big fan of the snaps!
I have several iron heart products including 4 flannels . Those flannels will last you a lifetime and there’s no comparing the quality to other brands . In my opinion iron heart products are superior to whatever else is out there and well worth the money . You have to get the 18oz selvedge denim CPO shirt . You’ll love it
Hey man! When the fall rolls around, I'll look for the 18oz selvedge CPO! Thanks for the suggestion and the comment. Much appreciated.
@@rockymtnstyle you will love that shirt brother . It’s one of my favorites 👍🏼
Maybe it’s just one of those things to try once with fun money? Carl Murawski and other always have high praise for Iron Heart, so it must not be bad at all. Just a lot.
Pretty much! That was my basic idea. I knew I had some Christmas money coming in so I pulled the trigger to try it out for the sake of the channel, and I love the damn thing! I figure if you try one out the worst that ll happen is a trip to the post office for a return!
Glad to see you are keep the videos coming. Haven’t checked out your channel in awhile. I own several Iron Heart shirts and they are great shirts but honestly think they should be in the $200 range not pushing $400. I own a Flat Head and UES flannel and they are just as good as Iron Heart. I have the green UHF tartan from a few years ago and that blue one was the only thing that stood out from FW23. I’m looking forward to the natural indigo M65 they are releasing in Spring for $1000….
Hey, welcome back and thanks for the comment! I've had a lot of folks mention UES to me specifically, so I'm committed to picking up one of those (hopefully off season on a sale) and maybe another brand (perhaps Flat Head) and doing a detailed comparison of a few of the Japanese makers next fall. And yes - that M65 looks like an absolute tank!
@@rockymtnstyle their indigo dyed Kersey shirt is my favorite shirt I own from them. You should check that out. Are you into watches?
Yup, sure am! Have done several watch vids on the channel here with mixed results. Doing an updated state of the collection video soon.
@@rockymtnstyle nice! that’s always a great video. I know you said you live up north in the Springs. What do you do for work?
Yeah, should be cool! I'm an engineering manager in the defense sector.
I would rather have one Iron Heart flannel than three from Huckberry, RRL, or Filson. Save up, it's worth every dime.
I think I'm at that point now, too, after living with it for awhile. And I bought the red/gray 12oz slub western also! :)
Iron Heart is always a nice piece. Never pulled the trigger on these because they don’t really go on sale. I usually default to a Freenote Cloth - Benson. The Benson usually goes on sale and is always worth the money(On Sale), plus the fit is spot on if you go off the sizing charts. Good buy for the collection, enjoy…
Thanks a bunch, sir. Happy enough to have it in the collection and it helps my knowledge to talk about other topics as the channel grows. The Benson is a super legit piece, too. I have looked at them so many times and have never pulled the trigger. It's really the only one I've considered b/c I don't love the chin strap thing on the other flannels. Glad to hear the sizing is spot on the chart. I hate when things aren't.
Wearing a benson now, love it - great piece to have. I would love to see a comparison of IH and the Samurai Heavy Flannel@@rockymtnstyle
Noted! I definitely want to pick up some more premium Japanese flannels as time goes on, so I'll make sure to check out Samurai and maybe I'll do a comp down the road.
Regardless of it being worth it, I wouldn’t pay $350 for a shirt. A jacket, shoes/boots, suit…yes. But a singular shirt or pants…hard no.
Fair enough!
Love the flannel. More than i would spend. Still, a solid review, as always.
Thanks, Erik - and yeah, you're definitely in the consensus on this one! I'd likely never have bought one if I didn't have a YT channel to show it off on, though! :)
Would never buy one new but glad these exist cuz if they are as good as poeople say they will be good to pick up second hand.
Yeah! I'm going to try and pick up a 2nd hand one as we get closer to the fall!
In their home japanese website, it cost around $230, but you can not buy it from the japan website it will direct you to iron heart international or the US site... it probably has to do with agreements to sell it internationally...
Yeah that makes sense. Probably some duties or taxes or something being added on outside the home market.
@@rockymtnstyle yeah duties and taxes... but i think the prices outside japan are basically unreasonable... take their 25oz XHS jeans... the price in the IH international site $425.00 compare that to the price in japan, Y33,000.00,which is just around $235.00... Like $190.00 goes to duties and taxes?
That does seem like a lot for that... You must be right. Probably just jacking up the price because people will pay.
I have a few UES extra heavy flannels (but none from any other brands - so take this with a grain of salt) but I can't imagine than they can be beat in regards to the feel, warmth, and construction quality (triple stitched in shoulders and back). The one area for improvement for them, in my opinion, is fit. But other than that, I feel like they're a good cost to quality ratio and they feel like they will last forever.
I've heard this a lot about UES and plan on finding out myself. Hopefully can snag a deal over spring/summer for a feature next fall.
I paid £290 for my Iron Heart UHF. I sold it after 4/5 years on ebay for £250.
I hadn't even thought of that... Great point and thanks for the comment!!
Decent looking shirt - however the deal breaker for me is the price and the fact that they don't pattern match the front pockets - the stripes are sideways and makes it look cheap to me - at that price point they should pattern match - I find it very distracting to look at.
Hey, Michael! I understand what you mean... there are some versions (darker base, lighter stripes) where I also find it distracting and for that reason I wouldn't get those patterns. For me, this one is close enough in coloration that the offset pattern doesn't bug me at all. And yes, for the money you need to get what you want, but definitely just a style choice, I don't see it as cheap in any way.
$350 and the first thing I would do is break out the seam ripper to get rid of that branding on the left chest pocket. Doesn't seem worth it.
Fair enough! I don't mind it. It's small enough.
I like it
Thx bro. It's a nice piece for sure.
Ahhh... Iron Heart. Makes us ooh and ahhh... or at least, I do. I agree with you that it is an absolutely ideal flannel shirt. Wonderful quality of contstruction, attention to detail and comfort. Plus, there is no better shirt out there for warmth. If you like the fit (which is definitely slim), and you have the coin, they are a great addition to any wardrobe. Are they worth the price? That is certainly debatable. Are they 10x more valuable than a $30 flannel from Target? 3x more valuable than an LL Bean or Eddie Bauer flannel? Well.... is any luxury item worth the price? I think about a question like this just as I think about other luxury items. The classic law of diminishing returns applies here as in many other economic decision. Of course it doesn't make financial sense. But, why are Ferrari's and Rolex's in such demand and hold their value as used items? No, they are not for everyone, but we all know that such exclusivity is available to those who can, and to those willing to pay the price. YMMV.
Great post, Telemark! Pretty much mirrors my thoughts exactly. Luxury, by definitely, doesn't always make sense. But it makes us feel good, and that's why many strive for it I guess!
Definitely 10x more valuable than a bottom of the barrel $30 flannel from Target or anywhere else. I'd trade 10 thin, floppy, hold no shape, wrinkly, posing as a flannel because of a plaid pattern but really just a button down shirt for 1 IH flannel without a second thought.
Yep. Agreed. How about two $150-$175 flannels that are very well made? I think that's the harder question than the 10 Target flannels.
@@rockymtnstyle Indeed, that is a more interesting comparison. Lots of great flannels out there. I have a UES that I picked up used that I really like. I purchased it used for $125. But, looking at their website, UES flannels are $250 and up. Well, dang.
@@rockymtnstyle I think that Flathead and Samurai are on even footing with Iron Heart and you can get them for less! I have some UES and I like their colorways and how thick their Extra heavy flannels are but in terms of finishing, they just don't hold a candle to IH or FH. They have a less slim fit as well which may or may not be your preference.. With the Yen so weak, just take a trip to Japan, get IH flannels for half off, as well as 30-40% off pretty much every other Japanese brand and have the cost of the flight paid for with the savings.
Can I ask. I heard it’s kinda wind proof I’m looking for a decent heavy flannel i ride a motorcycle a lot so looking for a flannel to block some wind do you think it fits the bill???
Hmmm... I haven't tested it per se... But given its thickness and tightness of weave id say it's about as windproof as 100% cotton can be. And you'd look awesome riding in it, so a little wind might be tolerable!
I don't think I could pull the trigger on this. It looks like a fantastic shirt, but I don't see the bang for buck. Maybe if they go on sale (which it doesn't appear to do). As you stated, 80-90% of the shirt for 50% price elsewhere wins my money every time. I've been known to change my tune on stuff like this once I've been into it for a while (watches and boots specifically), but I always go back to the bang for buck factor. My Allen Edmond boots are prime example. Great boot for the sale price I got them for, but not for the $500 full retail. If Iron Heart goes on sale, someone let me know, but until then, I can't justify.
Yup, completely agree on your bang-for-buck metric. I think in pretty much any industry the "top of the line" items always lack bang for your buck. Watches and boots (and cars) are great examples of this phenomenon, too. Only sale I saw on IH this holiday season was at Iron Shop Provisions and it was 15% off. If I see any more I'll definitely make a "Pick of the Day" and show it off.
Hi would you still recommend this shirt and especially this color ?
Hi! Yes, 100% on the shirt. I love it. The color is a bit hard to coordinate, but if you like bright colors it's wonderful also.
@@rockymtnstyle that’s the question i was asking to myself 🤔
@@rockymtnstyle The fact they are still available show there hasn’t been a great interest in that color from aficionados but I kinda love it.Actually I don’t know what to do .Do you think I should wait for the next winter batches ?
Those close-ups are purrtty
Thanks, bro! I was hoping someone would mention that! I waited until just the right time of day to get good lighting for those close ups.
That darn flannel is addicting let me just say that.
Hah! Ya got that right! If you're havin' flannel problems I feel bad for you son, i got 99 problems but a shirt aint one!
Truth@@rockymtnstyle
IH doesn´t catches me at all. I do love heritages Made in Japan, in my opinion there are better companies like Samurai Jeans, Pure Blue Japan, ONI Denim, UES ... IH is like a hype to me.
I hope to get some experience with the other brands as time goes on. It might be hype, but the products are great in my experience. Thx for the comment! Def plan on getting a UES flannel for review in the fall.
Thank you, I didn't recognise some of those brands. I going to look them up.
I'm not cheap, but $350 for a shirt is a stretch. Looks nice, hopefully you take it to the grave with you man!
Hah! No you are not, and yes, yes it is. Like I said to some others... prob would have have pulled the trigger if I didn't have a YT channel... its nice to have a full view of the market from top to bottom, and now I can talk intelligently about Duluth all the way up to Iron Heart and everything in between... so maybe long term for me it's an 'investment' in the channel's future and my credibility? Hah! :) Cheers mate!
Yowza! price tag... I hope you still have $300 left over for nice hat......... Hey, aren't you the guy from Barnwood Buidlers?
I knew this comment was coming! ;) YOWZA! Haha! Always room left for a hat if I find one that speaks to me, my friend. I had to lookup Barnwood Builders... they all look pretty tough so sure, that's me! :)
@@rockymtnstyle The main guy has a brown beard and wears a denim shirt a lot. (It's on tonight..)
True, debt is no joke.
Amen, brother.
Do you find the sleeves really long on the shirt? I checked the measurements on the iron heart website and these shirt seem to have really long sleeves.
Howdy! Thankfully, no, I don't. And usually sleeves are long on me because I have bigger shoulders/chest than my height/arms would normally be matched to. They ARE a little long, but not long enough that I'd tailor them and I do tailor sleeves pretty often. I should have shown that off in the vid, but was trying to keep it shorter. If you want, shoot me an email at rockymtnstyle@gmail.com and I'll send you some photos of the sleeves on me.
Iron Heart have long sleeves because their designer, Haraki-san, is a motorcycle rider and has bikers in mind. All the flannels are designed with slightly longer sleeves to accommodate the wearer being able to reach forward and hold the handlebars on a bike without the sleeves riding up and letting wind up your arms.
Thanks for the info. That makes good sense and is quite interesting. I rode a motorcycle in my early 20s and I can now remember not wearing some specific shirts for that reason.
Most of our clothes are far too cheap because they are produced in low-wage countries with cheap materials.
A watch like Rolex also costs more, because only top materials are used and it is produced in Switzerland, a high-price country. The same applies to IronHeart Japan.
Great point, sir! We are all guilty of that... we get accustomed to cheap materials and labor and forget sometimes that true quality and heritage can cost. Thanks for the comment!
The only way I’d pay $350 for a shirt is if it came with two $100 bills in the pocket.
Fair enough.
Iron Heart is a dangerous rabbit hole … ask me how I know😅
Hah!!! I don't have the faintest idea how that may have happened... ;) I did also buy a 12oz Whipcord Modified Type III in Olive right after I got this in, so maybe I'm looking down the rabbit hole already!
@@rockymtnstyle there’s no turning back now …
I am so confused. I am 6'2" and weigh 187 pounds. I wear a XXL UHF and it's still snug. How does that large look perfect on you?
I personally feel they're worth the money when all things are considered. Should you get one? That's a personal choice I can't lend any though to.
Thx man! Yeah I noticed looking around at different colorways that they all had different measurements. Some were pretty big difference too. I also have a 12 oz Whipcord jacket and it's snug at XL.
For me alone in my situation, I agree. Plan on buying a new one each fall. 👍👍
Thx for the comment!
$350 is a bit much for something I’m gonna thrash in the woods. Guess it’s an indoor shirt.
There is a lot of room between "indoors" and "thrash in the woods!" Hah! But I agree. If I'm doing something destructive I'd wear a less pricey item.
@@rockymtnstyle it looks like a quality piece for sure. Maybe some light camping or a small backyard bonfire. Good review by the way.
