Apparently an ex Ubisoft employee who was working on this game said the original story and concept was completely different but had changed due to quote "infestation of DEI within the company"
Dei?
Oh wow. Someone said that? Must take it as a fact.

He was a koshō, a glorified servant to Oda Nobunaga, who made him perform tricks in parties
I’m Japanese and I know the history of my country Yasuke was a servant of Nobunaga and Nobunaga made a promise to Yasuke before nobunaga died and the promise was “i will carry yasuke as a friend and friend how got invited in my country should not be in the battle of my country and that’s not your business” and then nobunaga give it to him a boat to get back in his country and for what we know about yasuke he lived three years only in Japan. I have played 6 AC games; I will not be playing this game. The male lead character that you have chosen will not let me suspend my belief in a game that's set in feudal Japan. I want to play as a Japanese male. The male character I know is based on a real person, but he wasn't a samurai, he was a retainer. Look, I just want to play a game set in a historical context with a male character that's believable of the time and period, otherwise I can't find that sweet, sweet immersion. Ubisoft, you will lose a lot of money on your fundamentally weak and wrong decision based on your choice for the lead male character. Better luck with the next AC.

No one tell him the game has two main characters and the real protagonist is the Shinobi female who grew up in Japan. And the black man is intentionally a foreigner.
Japan has the most iconic class of assassins ever. So instead of making a game about one of the ninja clans. They chose a African person who wasnt widely known about until 2 years ago and barely a footnote in all of Japanese history.

If there are that many historical inaccuracies, it's basically a fantasy game
This series has already turned from a slightly historically accurate to fantasy a long time ago
Leonardo Davinci didn’t make weapons for assassins, George Washington didn’t team up with a Native American assassin, there are no ancient artifacts that can control the minds of people, a middle eastern assassin didn’t make a gun in his hidden blade, and Ancient Greece and Norway didn’t have mythical monsters.
You literally fought mythological beasts in the past couple of games. It's not a history documentary. Go cry about something else
It's never been accurate, nor have they ever claimed to make historically accurate games. AC games are set in a certain period, *that's it.* There're a few details that make knowledgeable people go "Oh nice, I recognize that!", but that's about it.
Ubisoft wants us to believe that a guy who spent a few years in Japan, was able to master the fine art of sword fighting, which is something that takes damn near a decade to do and thats just to be fully proficient. So it’s impossible to be a samurai for three years. (so sorry for the English I’m learning.)
As documented in the Nobunaga family history, Yasuke was a sword bearer. Basically a servant akin to a squire or a Porter, who would tend to Nobunaga’s armor and weapons, etc. the word for Samurai, 武士, never appears in conjunction with Yasuke’s name. Of additional note, the modern statue of Yasuke often depicted in social media was quite obviously made by someone who not only did not know Yasuke’s history, but who also was ignorant of Samurai culture. The statue shows dreadlocks. Had Yasuke been a Samurai as the myth states, he would have had a chonmage (丁髷), which was not a fashion choice, but a necessity in order to properly wear a kabuto (兜, 冑) helmet. Anyway, sword bearer, not Samurai, but an interesting tale nonetheless.
i guess Ubisoft flew to close to the psnder stone again
Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579, met Nobunaga in 1581 and left Japan in 1582. What are the chances they'll make Yasuke a war veteran of like 5 years in the game?
NOPE... There was never a Black Samurai... Not one, not ever..
Yasuke
We will begin with the fact that Yasuke was a real person, he did exist, he was of African descent and he was put into the service of Oda Nobunaga. This is fact, and is not disputed.
What is disputed are all the revisionist stories of Yasuke as a great warrior, as having been awarded Samurai status, and earning respect of the Japanese people and other Damiyo that he encountered in the service of the Oda... THIS IS NOT FACT.
Romantic stories of the famed Black Samurai are nothing more than fables no more real than the futuristic comic book land of Wakanda.
Recent books by authors such as Thomas Lockley provide a plethora of speculation portrayed as fact, typically referencing historical documents and then interpreting them in a way to fit the narrative that sells books.
However we won’t go to far into the motivations of authors and commercialization of romantic stories, these have their purpose and remaining true to the historical records is rarely one of them.
Here is a high level overview based upon known recorded facts...
Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579 in service of the Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano, who had been appointed the Visitor (inspector) of the Jesuit missions in the Indies (East Africa, South and East Asia). He accompanied Valignano when the latter came to the Kyoto area in March 1581 and his appearance caused a lot of interest with the local people.
According to Histoire ecclésiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon, written by François Solier of the Society of Jesus in 1627, Yasuke was likely from Mozambique however this is not confirmed.
When Yasuke was presented to Oda Nobunaga, the Japanese Daimyō thought that his skin must have been coloured with black ink. Nobunaga had him strip from the waist up and made him scrub his skin. These events are recorded in a 1581 letter of the Jesuit Luís Fróis to Lourenço Mexia, and in the 1582 Annual Report of the Jesuit Mission in Japan, also by Fróis.
These accounts were also published in Cartas que os padres e irmãos da Companhia de Jesus escreverão dos reynos de Japão e China II (1598), normally known simply as Cartas.
"When Nobunaga realized that the African's skin was indeed black, he took an interest in him."
According to a Japanese accounting of Yaskue states: "On the 23rd of the 2nd month [23 March 1581], a black page came from the Christian countries. The man was healthy with a good demeanour and Nobunaga praised Yasuke's strength.
Some say that Yasuke could speak or was taught Japanese, and it is stated Nobunaga enjoyed talking with him. However, it is more likely that a Jesuit missionary translated for them, in order to control the dialogue as they were not ones to miss an opportunity to interact with Nobunaga in order to advance their mission.
Reportedly, Nobunaga's nephew gave him a sum of money at this first meeting, for his travels, and on 14 May, Yasuke departed for Echizen Province with Fróis and the other Christians.
During this trip, they met local warlords such as Shibata Katsutoyo, Hashiba Hidekatsu, and Shibata Katsuie, They returned to Kyoto on 30 May.
At some point, although when is not exactly clear, Yasuke entered Nobunaga's service.
Yasuke was also mentioned in the prototype of Shinchō ki owned by Sonkeikaku Bunko , the archives of the Maeda clan.
According to this, the black man named Yasuke was given his own residence and a short, ceremonial katana by Nobunaga. Nobunaga also assigned him the duty of weapon bearer (much to the annoyance of actual samurai)
Here is where the facts morph from what is known, to what is "wished for"...
Nobunaga had a propensity for the unique, and he was particularly interested in all things foreign. Clearly he was fascinated by Yasuke, and this was documented to be to the chagrin of many of his top generals such as Akechi Mitsuhide, who is reported to have been disgusted by the site of Yasuke, and saw him as nothing more than a wild beast.
After the Battle of Tenmokuzan, Nobunaga led his force, including Yasuke, and inspected the former territory of the Takeda clan. So people make the assumption that Yasuke actually fought in this battle, and that he donned Samurai armor and fought valiantly as a samurai hero.
Fact check: A sword bearer stays behind with the general camp, near to the lord, they don't go out on the battlefield, and there is ABSOLUTELY POSITVELY NO RECORD OF YASUKE FIGHTING IN ANY BATTLE!
There is also NO RECORD of Yasuke receiving martial arts training, or use of the Japanese sword, either when in the service of Nobunaga or the years prior.
The truth is that his time with Nobunaga was limited, as they first met in 1581 and Oda Nobunaga was dead a year later. This is hardly enough time for Yasuke to be trained to be the great warrior all the Waukanda dreamers want him to be.
Yasuke as a Samurai?
Sadly, for either commercial purpose, or some social equity rationale, some people attempt to equate Yasuke as a non Japanese Samurai in the same way the English sailor William Adams (Pilot) was later viewed.
However Adams was actually presented Samurai status, and there is no record of Yasuke being bestowed similar Samurai status. The FACTs are that Oda Nobunaga made him a servant for a few months.
A few months... not a lifetime of service dedicated to serving his lord, ready to give his life in the service of the Oda.
Another fact that is clear; Yasuke was kept around as talking piece, an oddity for Nobunaga to show off, much in the same way he enjoyed irking other Daimyo by showing them Azai Nagamasa's gold plated skull.
Fate of Yasuke
They say that Yasuke was present at Honnoji and took part in the fighting that lead to Nobunagas death.
However it is recorded that perhaps only a single individual from the Oda survived the Honnoji incident and it wasn't Yaskuke.
Yasuke was alleged to have been taken by Mitsuhide troops soon after the Honnoji incident, but Akechi had his men return him to the Christian missionaries stating that you don't kill the beast, for the fault of his master.
Was he an Honorable Samurai?
Despite modern romanticized versions of Yasuke, if he was this great Samurai some would have you believe, then it stands to reason that he would have either fought to the death at Honnoji, or at the very least he would have committed Seppuku.
Nope.... didn't happen.
Or if he was an honorable Samurai like the 47 Ronin, at the very least he would have begged to join Hideyoshi in the fight against Mitsuhide and gotten revenge.... don't you think?
Nope, didn't happen
All that is known about the fate of Yaskue , is that he was seen with the Christian Missionaries after Nobunagas death and reportedly fled the country soon after.
So while people may attempt to romanticize the story of Yasuke to suit their agenda, the truth is that such blatantly false attempts to rewrite history are pure revisionism and nothing more.
Faking history because it makes you "feel good" does nothing but a disservice to all students of the culture, the Japanese nation and the historical record.
There was no black samurai, no great Yasuke, no hero.... just a man who was a victim of circumstance and the times he lived in.

They’ve even changed the Wikipedia for Yasuke 😂 there’s before and after showing what they removed.
After Dying Light 2 and Alan Wake 2 I’ve learned to not to get my hopes up.

It won't be as good as ghost of tsushima,
but you're an "ist" if you point that out.
While it prolly is DEI meddling; Yasuke, while not a samurai, was a vassal. In other words, a man who received land from a feudal lord in return for homage and loyalty.
_A black man was taken on as a vassal by Nobunaga-sama and received a stipend. His name was decided to be Yasuke. He was also given a short sword and a house. He was sometimes made to carry Nobunaga-sama's tools_
_The black man understood a little Japanese, and Nobunaga never tired of talking with him. And because he was strong and could do a few tricks, Nobunaga took great pleasure in protecting him and had him roam around the city of Kyoto with an attendant. Some people in the town thought that Nobunaga might make him as tono_ (a lord)

It's blatantly obvious since George Floyd how fake and knee jerk all this is.
Always wanted to play as Johnny Somali in Japan. Yipee.
Should check the Ubisoft Japan upload of the trailer. There's at least a one hour video right there.
So, just how is a tall, muscular black man going to blend in as an assassin in feudal Japan? I can just see this character sneaking around in the game whilst the much smaller Asian characters pretend not to see him. Now, they could have put him into the game as what he actually was, namely a curiosity in the household a high ranking Japanese nobleman. Where they could have stitched him into the game as a significant character and given him an arc as a friend and confidante of the main character. That would have been interesting and more historically accurate, even though some license would still have been needed. But no, Ubisoft have to burnish their ESG/DEI credentials and force him into the MC slot.
In an age where identity is everything It's ironic that supporters of this game will say it's suddenly unimportant to have your identity attacked. it seems there are are "important" and "unimportant" identities.

It's not only pleasing African Americans. It's to please all the African Westerns that also are all over UK and Europe.
Also i would think that Samurai were like Nobles in Europe with these titles. Or it was like their emperor elite military title given to the people.
Even being Ninja was like life long journey to train and become one while you would never become one when you start to learn the art of fighting and train when you were adult.
Never mind that this is in an era where normal human life time was like 40-50 years. So when you were like 30 then you already were a old man
Ngl we’ve never had a yasuke game. He would be cool to be a DLC or a side character I wouldn’t give him much spotlight tho. I don’t look to AC for historical accuracy it’s more about the theme of the time period they chose
Nothing screams sneaky Japanese assassin like a tall black man who kills people with a mace wearing armor. Also I remember that one lady from Sweet Baby Inc bragging about putting a transgender main character Japanese Assassin Creed so I'm assuming that's the female protagonist.
It's called a Kanabo/kanobo (not sure on spelling). They were literally invented to counter armour because it became clear swords don't cut metal.
Is that why the female looks like a boy in the trailer?
@@Feetism I thought samurai armor was made out thick clothe and bamboo covered in hard lacquer with maybe some metal plating.
The main Protagonist who is very clearly the center point of the game and story is Japanese and is an assassin. Yasuke isn’t obviously. And the game will have two different play styles. Stop bitching the game isn’t even out yet.
The nioh character in the ps4 game was William
I'm black and in no way do I feel this is for me
It's clearly 100% for the world economic forum who invented the dei policies black rock enforces
Glad you can see it. These are highly privileged mostly white people who see black people as children they need to lead, always, these things are lazy knee jerk blatant choices to distract people.
The Nazi Tried to Rewrite History as well funny that
Ubisoft love that black rock money 💰
Finally an assassin creed game set in futal japan about ninjas and samurais and this is what we get.
At the end of the day it's a fantasy action video game & this shouldn't really matter...
The game itself might be great!... ~
( But as Assassin's Creed incorporates historical elements...
I feel it's extremely important to honour the past regardless of how modern society chooses to interpret it for fictional stories & that means accuracy where possible... ~
Particularly for documented people within those time periods... ~
Misinterpreting & changing history to fit narrative is problematic... )
It's almost as if they're very selective and have an f you attitude to white men but pander hard to everyone else, some more than others.
It will be interesting to hear this dudes voice
And how exactly does putting a character from Mozambique pander to Black Americans 😭
0:37 It's YAS-SKAY. The thing you have to remember about Japanese pronunciation is that u is almost always silent in Japanese names.
Glad you're bringing this up. No one wants to touch it. Its a hot potato lol.
Most of the comments on the trailer are calling it out
All we need to know about black people in Japan comes from Johnny Somali. You see, the N-word isn't a racial slur but the sound your body naturally makes when your cultural immune system is assaulted.
how can yasuke can blend in when he assassinate someone, his big and only black man in japan, he will get identified so fast 🤣
I think it's more notable that this game was in development when the animated show "Yasuke"(2021) came out either by coincidence or mandate and likely caused script changes for brownie points.
There is also absolute garbage pricing right up there with Star Wars Outlaws $70(base, incomplete) to $130 with trash access, season pass, and paywalled content for a single player game on live service only.
Where is my Yasuke game? Ninja Gaiden style with Afro samurai swag fighting demons and monsters and stuff. Nobody plays AC games anymore 😢😢
There are some references, but he is just a “page.”
When you think of the Zulu you don't think it's a bunch of Asian's running around, This will be the death of Assassin's Creed.
Now, playing a Japanese character in a Medieval Japan set, what an insane idea.
Pity they couldn’t do an assassins creed game based on Ghezo and maybe some people might be educated
They could've made the assassin a Portuguese Jesuit who has to avoid being caught by the Shogunate, knowing he'll be murdered or tortured in the most brutal ways, odd how historical cruelty against certain groups goes ignored but with others it's 24/7 victimhood
They've basically admitted if you were black in Japan you were safer than Christian Europeans.
Would've been great as DLC.
the entertainment industry as a whole needs to pull their heads out of their created history, and start to amend for all the abuse and horrible things they are guilty of over the years. The 1915 film "Birth of a Nation" was a huge triumph for hollywood. To bad it's the first film account of the myth of the lost cause. A lot of black Americans died from violence stirred up by the false narrative of that "award-winning" movie.
Because of the way films were distributed back then, I'm pretty sure this caused the the Red Summer of 1919 in which there was so much KKK violence whole black towns were basically destroyed and ignored by the media.
Let's not even talk about their history of covering up CSA.
I don't need DEI training, Hollywood needs an HR department with teeth to keep the rich predators at bay.
Whelp, at least this saves me money on"renting" this from Ubisoft.
I was skeptical BEFORE seeing the trailer because i know at this point AC do generally glorify history... but imo it's frustrating with Yasuke due to his history already being SUPER fabricated and glorified.
The culture vultures will never cease.
Hahahahahaha! I knew this was going to get backlash. It's quite obvious why Ubisoft did this.
We wuz japanese n sheeeeit
Let's hope Ubisoft hemorrhages a lot of money for this.
This should been a sequel to a main Line all Japanese game you know with actual japanese protagonist. Then we are good, but come on hard to blend in.
That's what they want you to worry about the character not that its going to be a seasonal game that's going to cost $130
Pandering and over pricing can both F off.
