    just a note, this isn't genderbent... its tradition for Peter to be played by a woman in theatre but the character is still a boy therefore not genderbent.

    This is why I dislike “modern” views of history: The character of Peter Pan was always played by a woman in stage musicals because of the small body type matching to the rest of the child characters and relative weight that the stagehands had to lift off the ground with the flying rig. That’s why they cast Catherine Martin and many females after her. There was no “gender bending” involved in the casting of Allison Williams, it was historically accurate. Conservative false flag/revisionist history meant to rile up opinions!

      You mean Mary Martin? And yes I quite agree with you. The use of the term "gender-bending" here is completely inaccurate considering Pan was played by women for years, starting with Maude Adams in the original Barrie play in the early 1900s. Betty Bronson was the first to play her on film in the 1920s silent film.

      What do you mean by that last sentence? It sounds like YOURE trying to rile up opinions. As a conservative I and many people I know are aware Peter Pan was played by a woman. I grew up watching the Mary Martin version on VHS.

    In the book, Peter is no older than seven, because he still has all his baby teeth. I wish someone someday would make a version of Peter Pan where the children are the real ages of the ones in the books- and Peter is played by a boy!

      @alexilupin 2 года назад +6

      The ages are still a bit too old, but you might like the 2003 live action Peter Pan

      I personally tend to think that Peter in the novel is meant to be closer to Wendy's age (14), which would explain why Mrs. Darling reacts with surprise to him still having all his baby teeth. I always thought of it as another way that Peter is shown to spurn growing up, so much it even reflects in his physical appearance. When they play house, they make Peter the "Father" to Wendy's "Mother," which suggests they're close in age, as well as the fact that Wendy is interested in kissing him, and flustered when he misunderstands (I don't know of any 14-year-old girl who tries to kiss a 7-year-old boy in a romantic way). EDIT: I decided to revisit the book, and I found more evidence: when Mrs. Darling remembers stories of Peter from her own youth, and says he must be grown up by now, Wendy tells her mother that he isn't an adult, but "just my size."

    Peter Pan being played by a woman came not out of some message of political ideology, but out of practicality. In the UK, child labor laws prevented children from performing onstage after 9 PM. That and probably other complications that would ensue from working with kids. Hence, a woman has traditionally played the boy who never grew up.

    Except for the two little ones, the lost boys are grown men. Surely there were talented 8-13 year old boys available. Same for the actress playing Wendy, too old.

      I absolutely agree, however, its very difficult to manage so many underaged castmembers, because one, they are not allowed to play many shows a week so they'd have to have two or even three casts. And itd be a total chaos

    • @SxyChicDisney
      @SxyChicDisney 2 года назад +2

      I don’t think there are many kids who could do the choreography that was used in this show. It was pretty technically challenging. And other than Michael and John adults have always played the roles of Peter, Wendy and the lost boys. It’s not uncommon

    Everyone said Christian Boyle carried the show, and whilst I think he did, I liked Allison Williams too. Men have played women in theatre for millennia. I like that she took on a boy's role. I think the directing could have used a LOT of work, but overall, I've seen worse renditions of this musical.
