- Lanikai is a subdivision of Kailua, known around the world for its stunning beach en.wikipedia.or... and dramatic views. It was originally developed in the 1920s www.lanikaiasso... and has become the home to celebrities from near and far. Don Ho was among Lanikai's many famous residents. The Lanikai Canoe Club maintains a fierce rivalry with the nearby Kailau Canoe Club.
The Lanikai Pillboxes hawaiiantrails.... are relics of World War II and today provide a challenging hike and stunning views.
But thanks to intrepid location scout Pat La`a we found another location in Lanikai with magnificent views of Lanikai Bay and the Mokulua Islands, at the home of Petty Floyd, where we were hosted by Petty and her son Phillip for an afternoon of slack key.
The lilting melody of "Nanea Ko Maka I Ka Le`ale`a" seemed to fit the scene. This is one I play often but playing any song with Ledward Kaapana adds plenty of magic. As always he found new ways through the song, down low and up high, in and around the melody with his flying fingers. We're using the traditional licks and melody fragments from Gabby Pahinui and Ray Kane, but improvising the details of our arrangement on the fly.
We're both tuned to taropatch open G, spelled D G D G B D from low to high. Ledward is playing his Martin SP000-16, I'm using my Epiphone Masterbilt EF-500RCCE.
We recorded the audio on a Zoom H6 using the XY mic module. Video was captured on a Panasonic Lumix GH3 for the panned shot and a Lumix GX7 for the static closeup. All editing in Edius.
I remember living in Lani'kai 1994-1996. Thanks for the memories!
The weather is so crappy outside here in the Pacific Northwest, but this music takes me to where the sun shines brightly and the ocean breeze is cool. Mahalo!
Of all our videos that is one of the favorites. Still plenty to wish we had done better, but Lanikai and Ledward and "Nanea Ko Maka" is a hard to beat combination.

a tatami mat and a couple manapu'a and I'm in heaven listening to this - and smelling the salt air. Thank you, Lord.
Hey Fran; You and Ledward are such a complimentary duo that it would be awesome to see you both at George Kahumoku's slack key show. Great music and plese keep it going.
Listening to this music at the end of the day is so relaxed!!
Be Muller Thank you sir, glad to be of service. I've played this song many times and always enjoyed it, but playing it with Ledward was the best ever.
Fran
Thank you for another installment. This music brings peace & joy to any day.
Thanks, what a kind compliment.
Fran
at. nights I listen and go to sleep. Last thing I do before my prayers.
How kind of you to share that comment, thank you.
I often tell people that slack key is the only style of music where it's a compliment when the audience goes to sleep.
Fran
Both the playing and the site are lovely! Thank you.
Thank you, Andy. A very special place indeed.
Fran

A beautiful song at an absolutely gorgeous location! Wonderfully played. Excellent audio and filming. Mahalo nui loa.
So glad you enjoyed the piece. It sure was fun playing that song with Ledward.
Fran
Dear Fran, I'm stunned. As you write this is Magic. If it would be possible I'd fly straight there, but by this video one almost get... sooo close. Got so good mood, Mahalo!
Oh, JP, it's much more magical than it appears ... except for the traffic when the beach is nice!
Fran
Fran,
I'm just now discovering your great "stuff". Makes me miss Hawaii and Led's laugh.
Epiphone ??? Good for you. Sounds great.
Bob
Bob, thanks for visiting. My latest video has a couple of Ledward chuckles.
The Epiphone(s) are the Hawai`i guitars. We have a few more upscale instruments in Walnut Creek, and these are featured in the last couple of videos as well.
Fran
Stunningly beautiful music and video. This will help me through a stressful house move I'm sure!!
Phil
Aloha, Phil. Is there any kind of move that's not stressful?? All the best in your new location.
Fran
...feel good now
Oops, this is the one I sent you the link to in the other video of the same song. But you were here before me!
Thanks for taking time to comment as you go.
Fran
SweeT!
Thanks!

So I’ve decided I’m doing my life wrong. I need to learn slack key and move to Hawaii...
Dave, I have to admit that learning slack key has enriched my life a lot. I haven't moved to Hawai`i but the time I spend there is the best part of my year, year after year.
