There's a lot going on in Led's head when he's playing so he looks so serious, but sometimes he breaks out laughing. Especially when he makes a mistake! Fran
Can't put into words how much I have enjoyed you and Led, since I discovered just how beautiful slack key is. Thanks for the many hours of lovely music.
Led is just incredible (insert all the superlatives). Just watching this and the Maui song (for K. Wingert). Wow. Fran, you hold it down exceptionally well too. Thank you for all of the great videos.
Thanks for visiting - yes, Led is just phenomenal. He has a sense of melody and rhythm that results in a flow of gorgeous musical ideas. I'm glad you're enjoying our clips, it has been a great honor to play alongside such a master and capture some of his stuff for posterity. Fran
I used to have cassettes for the guitar band called Ohui Ohana in the 1979/80. And I missed their cool nice music now I have heard from you again. Please share with me your soul thank Fran n your friend.
Yes indeed, Led Kaaapana was in Hui Ohana with his twin brother Nedward Kaapana and cousin Dennis Pavao. Both Nedward and Dennis are deceased, but Ledward is still going strong!!! Fran
Thanks for your comments on various videos. With all the content out there it's an honor to have someone spend enough time to visit more than one of our clips. I hope you succeed in getting back to Hawai`i. Fran
I would love to do a European tour with Ledward, it has been many years since he was there. I understand that NL has an historic connection to Hawaiian music. Fran
Thanks for visiting and commenting. I feel like I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have found these great friends in that beautiful place. Every place is special in some way, but Hawai`i, windward side of O`ahu, is just drenched in beauty. Fran
Hi Fran. I visited with you some years back and you were kind enough to respond. I was wondering if you and Led still get together. How I wish I could see you both in person. I was attempting to learn this style of playing when I had an attack of a nerve disorder that sadly leaves one of my arms/hand/fingers or elbow - numb. I am now unable to attempt anything like this. Thank God you two have made several videos together. I adore your music and often play it when I'm -down. It always brings me back and makes me cheer right up. My dream is to meet you both and just sit and listen. Sadly, being retired now, this is now out of the question. At 71, I had a severe accident and destroyed all hope of ever playing guitar (or piano, because I play ragtime piano too - or used to) I left my right hand impaired severely. But, you and Led are there for me, so I can hear you. Please, if you speak with Ledward, kindly let him know I'm his biggest fan of both of you men. Tell him, as I'm telling you now, just how much I appreciate you guys and your beautiful music. Meeting you two or sitting in with you two is on top of m-y bucket list. It's unlikely I could ever make it there but on- some trip when my wife and I fly back to her country (Philippines) I wish I could layover on the islands ind get to meet you both. It's my greatest dream. Sadly, at 71 (with the energy of a 30-year-old) that's unlikely to happen. Alas, I have to be happy with the videos. But a man can dream. God bless you both and I hope you read this at some point. Take care and Ill be tuning in whenever I can.
Aloha, Doug, yes Led and I get together when we can. He was here in California around Christmas and we did a few shows, and he'll be back around May. Then I'll probably be in Hawai`i in June and July, so lots of kanikapila then. Sorry to hear about the damage to your hand, our ability to play an instrument is a fragile thing. Thanks for visiting and commenting, Fran
Sounds great!! So nahenahe, listening while I do other stuff on the computer, one video after another comes on. Besides playing awesome what are you using to record? I don't hear any background noise....wind....or anything.
Thanks for stopping by. I try to include the recording details in all my video descriptions. In this case I recorded the pickups in both guitars, plugged directly into a Zoom H6 recorder. If you had been there, you would have to be right on top of us to hear the guitars. I've never had good success recording with microphones at the beach because of wind and wave noise, so I use pickups and direct recording. Fran
Is Led like, a virtuoso, or something? Just kidding. Clearly, he knows how to play slack key inside out, upside down and backwards. I see your gob-smacked expression at the end, Fran, haha!! "Jus' press," you know!!!!
One of the most striking things happens when we're in Hawai`i - driving along on our way to Kane`ohe to visit Led and jam with him and one of his recordings comes on the radio and we remember once again that he's not just our jam buddy - he's a superstar and a virtuoso and a link in the chain of Hawaiian heritage. It's a moment both humbling and inspiring. Fran
We generally use either taropatch (open G) or drop C (open G with the lowest pitch tuned down to C). Ledward has another half-dozen or so tunings he can pull out, I have some familiarity with a couple of others, but those extra tunings don't get played nearly as often. I usually include tuning info in my description, but I forgot it this time. We're both in taropatch or open G, from low pitch to high it's D G D G B D. Fran
Led, du machst immer ein so trauriges Gesicht....lach doch mal. Ihr macht so tolle Musik!!! Danke.
There's a lot going on in Led's head when he's playing so he looks so serious, but sometimes he breaks out laughing. Especially when he makes a mistake!

People from Hawaii - please know that you are so lucky to have these talented guys amongst you - this is music at it's best
Thanks, Johann. There are many great musicians throughout Hawai`i, and many more around the world, but Ledward is really special.
Fran
