  • One of the numerous interviews done with Harry Truman on April 18, 1980, month before he died and a fan made animation of what probably happened on that fateful day when Mount Saint Helens erupted.
    Edit 5th May 2019: As I learnt from the comments, the author of the animation which starts around 5:23 is a guy called Deviantart King of 97. Check his channel here, he has some videos about Mt. St. Helens too: / channel

    well he lived a long fulfilling and seemingly happy life in a amazingly beautiful location!!! , more than can be said for most of us nowadays!! RIP Harry

    When your life is the mountain, you die with it and rest in peace.
    Mr. Truman knew if he fled and survived he would live the rest of his days in a nursing home.

    Met Harry many times in the 50s and 60s he was a character he will not be for gotten

      My only problem with Harry is he likely convinced others it was safe to stay where they were as well, and got them killed also.

      No, this was pure stupidity. If he wanted to die, he could have at least had someone take his cats so they didn’t have to die too. If I wanted to leave this world, I sure as hell wouldn’t take my babies with me.

    ...and an est. 175,000 animals were killed, and Harrys cats. Poor animals, didn't know what hit 'em. :-(

      If it makes you feel any better they were vaporized almost instantly. Their nervous systems weren't intact long enough to register any pain sensations.

      Apparently the sheriff's on their last visit to persuade him to leave left their car door open whilst talking to him and a 🐈 hopped in and when they drove away they apparently realised that they had a stowaway

    at the time i was 10 years old and living 525 miles to the south and i can remember one afternoon it was snowing ash and my dad telling us that the volcano blew up where we had just went camping a few months prior..

    I grew up here. We were kids finding pumice rocks in our yard for years afterwards. Scratched the hell out of the bathroom sink and bathtub!

    The depiction of the eruption was ofly slow. From the moment David Johnston started his last transmission to the moment he was silenced was all the time it took for the searing supersonic 660°F pyroclastic flow to travel five miles to Johnston Ridge.

      Are you human? RIP Harry Truman and well the cats yeahhh. You feel for the cats but nothing for Truman.. I respect his choice lived there for over 50 years like he said if I left and lost my place I wouldn't last a week he couldn't stand it so he said if this damn thing takes this mountain I'm gonna go with it! True American stand up for what you believe.

      Never will happen nothing there. The first 6 miles from mountain was blasted to bare bedrock then the landslide filled the toutle River valley up to 600ft of landslide debris and ask. Harry lodge was blasted to nothing. Spirit lake was filled with 200ft of mud so the bottom of the lake now is above the former surface of the lake

      ​@@dwizzleusa4202 yeah that blast overtook the landslide quick, vaporized in seconds then burried under 1000 feet of chaos. lake was probably turned to vapor before landslide even got there.

    stunning animation! thanks for this.wondering how you got the pics of Truman and Johnson just hours before they died? did the cameras survive? whoever took the pics got the heck out? just curious.

      The picture of David is well known in poublic, and was taken by his colleague Harry Glicken. And Harry was photographed by Rob Smith, who is last known person to talk and visit him on Saturday evening.

    I understand why Harry stayed, but why was David Johnston there? David predicted the mountain would erupt just as it had and he warned everyone about the danger of the mountain. He wasn't in any denial about it erupting and he had his whole life ahead of him. What was he thinking? He was only 30.

      Actually the pyroclastic flows were faster as seen in animation, it overcame the landslide

      Heat blast of 800~1000° killed him in under a second, "long" b4 the lahar got to the lodge.

    Harry Truman was true to himself. Without Spirit lake his home his life would be over..... Like he said in an interview he might as well just go down with the ship. I can just imagine he looked the mountain straight in the eye that morning as it blew.😢

    I was born and raised in Washington State. I was ok with him eating crow and coming off the mountain. I lived in Port Angeles at the time and felt like a house in our neighborhood exploded. Our front picture window shook so hard I thought it was going to break. RIP

    A classic case of someone who thought he knew better than the actual scientists that studied volcanoes.he predicted a south eruption not a North one...even though the volcano had a northern bulge.maybe he was scared and was hoping it would go south instead...
