This movie has a special place in my heart, it was one of the first movies that my wife and I watched together when we were dating over thirty years ago. What a brilliant masterpiece. We had a line that we used from the movie with our children as they were heading out the door… Have fun storming the castle. Do you think it will work? It will take a miracle. Bye…. "Mawwiage" almost knocked me out of my seat at the theater. That was not what I expected to come out of Peter Cook's mouth - but it was perfect! (just like everything about this movie) 😎
TBH I think he did the best acting job in that movie. And that’s especially high praise because literally the entire cast was fantastic! He gave Inigo so many little quirks and his reactions felt so genuine.
Yes, that is an interesting thought isn't it. How long before it stops being watched? We still watch Shakespeare in the original txt, people actually learn what is half a foreign language, and about cultures that have little in common with us, to watch Will.
I've watched many videos similar to this where actors, directors and the likes review old films. I must say, I am taken at how friendly and genuine these three are talking to each other. Most notable being Rob. Must have been another reason they had lightning in a bottle. For example, Mandy (who played Inigo) was brought to tears in fond memories of this film. Wonderful stuff.
Yes I saw a VHS around 27 years ago. My son was about 1 year old. I was blown away by this movie & bought my own VHS. One day a few years later I left the TV on after the movie ended and realised there was this most amazing song at the end. Again I was blown away. Great movie, great cast, great fight scenes, great acting, great song & great director. My wife asked me to do something I have never done before. At 68 I will sing in front of a large group of people at our daughter's wedding - this is the song I have chosen. Thanks Mark Knopfler & Willy DeVille

Rob Reiner was on fire as a director at that time. Great movie. It's a perfect combination of story, characters, humor (but not TOO much humor) and that most important thing that so many movies fail to capture: Heart. I think the ending they ended up using was the best and I think they were right to cut what they cut out. And considering how old Carl Reiner (Rob's dad) was when he passed away I'd say there's a real good chance that the three of them CAN meet again in 25 years, which would be 2037 if we go by when this interview came out (2012).
Rob Reiner made some of the most entertaining films ever, This is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men...

I was a teenager when this movie came out and my friends and I watched it at least a few times a year. We bought it on CD when my kids were toddlers (my eldest is 23 now) this movie was a huge part of their childhood. Can't wait to share it with grandkids.
I saw it the first night it was shown at Hoyts on George St, Sydney. I sat and watched it with my twins' sons and daughter the first time they saw it. I will be around 60 then, so I might even make it to show the film to my great great niece one day.
My parents started indoctrinating the grandkids with this film as soon as possible. Nothing like hearing your 3yo niece wishing you goodbye and "have fun castle".
Much like the movie, this interview put a huge smile on my face. No matter how many times I see "Princess Bride," it makes me smile. The stories of Andre's drinking are not exaggerated. As a sports reporter who spent many years in Tampa, FL (a wrestling hot-bed) I had the chance to chat with many pro wrestlers who had worked and drank with Andre. They all agreed that Andre could put away alcohol like most of us consume sweet tea on a hot day.
I went to a reading of Cary Elwes' book, and he said that one time Andre drank so much he passed out in a hotel lobby. They didn't know what to do with him, no way could they move him!
I was doing live-action role playing when this movie came out (almost nobody was doing LARP back then) and a group of people decided to go as the Princess Bride characters. One of them was, of course, Inigo Montoya. What the party didn't know was that the organizers decided to play along and put Count Rugen on the field. I happened to be lucky enough to be there when they met. The real shock on "Inigo's" face was hilarious.

When I was working with the College Marching Band in the early 80's, we did a lot of parades that fall. As the band would step off from the staging area, I said Billy Crystal's line, "Have fun storming the castle." The front half of the band laughed so hard they got out of step and had to skip-hop to get back on the correct foot. Still a great line. :)
Thank you, it's a joy to know how aware they are of having made such a masterpiece. I remember very well the happiness it was to discover Pincess Bride at the movie theater, it was a wonder from the first to the last second
*In the HISTORY of film making, I'd say that the "Adventure-Fantasy" is hardest to land but the most rewarding and amazing when done right. Princess Bride is among the best and takes it's place along with movies like, Labyrinth, Never Ending Story, Goonies, or even a, "Raising Arizona"(surreal more than fantasy). The fact that the great majority of the movie was live action and human characters was the crowning touch (degree of difficulty), and that it was a love story without being heavy handed made it one of a kind.*
I didn't see this movie until decades after it first came out but it has become one of my favourites. No matter how bad a day I am having it makes me feel good. I have introduced other people to it, and they have loved it too.💗
Bill Goldman handed the manuscript for the book to my mother while standing over my couch, and I rode with Mom in a taxi to deliver the finished manuscript to him. Fun times!
@@BethBruch He's lying through his teeth. Ask him about when his mom died, and he defrauded the welfare system by not reporting it for years... Ask him about his "seduction" book. Or better yet, don't.
I rented this on video, remember those? After finishing the movie, I rewinded it and started watching it all over again right from the beginning. Absolutely love it, it might be my all time favorite? Jan.
This is so marvelous, the three of you! I saw Cary talk about his book in Petaluma California a few years ago now, again marvelous. What a Gift to US ALL! Thank You for making the movie and for this interview.
I've just watched "Land" at the cinema in New Zealand and knew I had seen Robin Wright before. Ah yes Princess Bride. A favorite family movie. I remember visiting my son and his wife in Sydney Australia when they were 24 year olds, and we watched the video together, quoting the lines together. Thankyou, Team for huge family memories
Now I really must start looking for my DVD and binge-watch this gem over and over and over... As a footnote, I really must say that I found Mandy's and Elwes's sword-fight scene most electrifying and mind-blowing, but Shawn's (Vizzini) iconic ''inconceivable!'' acting keeps me asking for more. Love this film, I really do.
I programmed Alexa to say "As you wish" whenever my wife asks her to turn on and off the lights in the house. It is one of our two favorite movies with lines firmly engrained in our relationship.
I watch this movie again once every four or five years. I love it so much, I don't want to spoil it by overuse. Otherwise, I could watch it three or four times a year, and would have overdosed on it by the turn of the century. It's still fresh for me. Not incidentally, Robin Wright is, as Rob Reiner says, the most beautiful woman in the world. Then and now. The face that could launch a thousand ships.
Funny you should say that ( "spoil it by overuse" ). I got to the point where I knew it so well, I had to take a break from it. That's when I discovered Goldman's ( or was it Morganstern's ) novel. It's hilarious ( introduction included ). The story is the same, but different. For instance, did you know Humperdinck was once engaged to a noblewoman with more hats than anyone in the region? At their wedding feast, the wind blew through the great hall, blowing off her hat, revealing her as bald. Humperdinck told her to feel free to run.
My go-to date movie back in the day. Taped it off Showtime in 1989 or so. Favorite line: "Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."
I was in college when I watched Princess Bride, I had my son watched it when he was in elementary. When he was in college he downloaded the movie and made me watched it! Now I can watch it anytime! One of My favorite movies❤️
I wanted to name my son, Wesley, but the hubby was not a fan....It was my top choice...lol The thing about the Princess Bride is that it checks all the boxes...adventure, mystery, romance, comedy, drama...and it's one of the few movies of all time that makes you feel good watching it. Most movies these days are dark, depressing, and if they are adventurous, they aren't lighthearted. That's why I can watch it over and over again (and I generally hate to re-watch movies), and why everyone I know seems to love it.
If you love the movie, read the book. It's amazing and expands on a few things in the movie like what happened when they tried to get into the pit of despair.
The movie is better. Helps when you have the author of the book write the movie, too. He was able to refine the story down further to something even sharper and funnier.
I second this. I’ve read the book at least 11 times now and its still my favorite in the world. Some of the movie dialogue is better than the book’s version, but overall its so flipping fantastic and the writing style is so much fun too!
I adore The Princess Bride. I have worn out so many copies on VHS and then DVD. I now have Disney+ just so I can watch The Princess bride anytime I want(spoiler alert it’s All the time!). I can quote that movie from start to finish. I cannot express enough how much I love the Princess Bride. The book is outstanding as well. I normally read the book and promptly abhor the movie but not in this case it was an amazing movie and I can never say enough good things about that movie. Anytime anyone asks what my favorite movie is , instantly I respond the Princess Bride
I was 21 when this movie came out and my kids love the movie. It's one of their favorites. We have a few copies of it. It's a great cast and a great director with great lines.
Cary Elwes as James Harcourt, arriving at the scene restaurant in "Another Country" Marek Kanievska's 1984 movie was OUR prince charming. You can't imagine his impact on us. Oh ! James !
There are so many good movies that its hard to say which is your absolute fave but I just say the princes bride because of all its qualities it has a way of making you feel good in a wholesome way without being a sappy cliche. How such a silly movie avoids this is beyond my ability to describe it but somehow it does...Yeh, it still retains its 'best movie ever made' title.
When it first came out on VHS we rented it. At that time we went to the video store at least twice a month to rent videos. So we watched for the first time and loved it so we bought the VHS tape of it. My Nana had never seen it though so when she was visiting, almost 20 years ago, we were deciding what movie to watch. We had it on DVD at this time so a bit of an upgrade, I have it digitally now though. So I suggested it and we watched it. She okay with it up until the wedding when Peter Cook, the Impressive Clergyman, turns around and starts with "Mawwiage.", my Nana started busting up. As he kept going she was laughing so hard she actually fell off of the couch onto the floor hysterically laughing. She was physically perfectly fine but she was just doubled over in laughter. I just remember that moment vividly when it comes to this movie because she passed away about a year later.
Everyone who I have shown it to, young, old or whatever has loved it. I haven't found anyone who doesn't like it, and who doesn't quote it! Oh, and Storybook Love was our Wedding Song.
My wife and I have "As you wish" engraved in our wedding bands.

I have introduced other people to it, and they have loved it too.💗
Absolutely one of my favorite movies. I quote the lines all the time.
Bill Goldman handed the manuscript for the book to my mother while standing over my couch, and I rode with Mom in a taxi to deliver the finished manuscript to him. Fun times!
Wait, what? Why??? I need context!!!
@@BethBruch He's lying through his teeth. Ask him about when his mom died, and he defrauded the welfare system by not reporting it for years... Ask him about his "seduction" book. Or better yet, don't.
My favorite movie of all time. It always makes me smile..
very fun interview...the movie will never die
I rented this on video, remember those? After finishing the movie, I rewinded it and started watching it all over again right from the beginning. Absolutely love it, it might be my all time favorite? Jan.
This is so marvelous, the three of you! I saw Cary talk about his book in Petaluma California a few years ago now, again marvelous. What a Gift to US ALL! Thank You for making the movie and for this interview.
I look forward to that 50th Anniversary conversation. Hopefully, we'll all be alive at that time (and with all our marbles present and accounted for)!
I wish Peter Falk was still with us
"Oh, ah... One more thing before I go..." ;)
I've just watched "Land" at the cinema in New Zealand and knew I had seen Robin Wright before.
I saw this movie for the first tim, few months ago, with a special person...who’s no longer part of my life 😔
❤️
I host a Friday movie night in our work/creative building in Pasadena and this just inspired the one I’m picking for next week!! 🙌🏻🌴🎥⚡️❤️💯😎👍🏻
My go-to date movie back in the day. Taped it off Showtime in 1989 or so.
Favorite line: "Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."
That IS a classic line. Along with: Not a lot of profit in revenge
This was lovely... thank you.
GREATEST sword fight of ALL TIME!!!
"Who are you?"
"No one of consequence."
"I must know."
"Get used to disappointment."
“i am not left-handed!”
I was in college when I watched Princess Bride, I had my son watched it when he was in elementary. When he was in college he downloaded the movie and made me watched it! Now I can watch it anytime! One of My favorite movies❤️
As you wish wonderful 💖 movie I love it the whole cast worked perfectly together I love this movie
This is hands down my favorite movie... FAVORITE .... & I am 60 & was raised by a movie enthusiast & so have seen a lot of good movies 🤗🥰
I love these people. So normal. So unaffected. So unusual for show business.
I want to see the blooper real of Billy Crystal bringing the cast to tears with laughter, take after take.
I'd love to see the blooper reel of this entire movie!
The book doesn't expand things from the movie. The movie omitted things from the book. Good Grief.
@@nonyabusiness2510 Yes but for the majority of people it's the other way around captain pedantic.
@@nonyabusiness2510 - I think this movie is one of the rare cases where the movie script was better than the book, particularly the ending.
Total enjoyment video. Thanks all. Loved the movie.
The stars have aged as well as the movie.
The best fairytale ever ... Love 💕 everything about it and especially the actors...
What a wonderful commentary discussion of one of my favorite all-time movies.
I was 21 when this movie came out and my kids love the movie. It's one of their favorites. We have a few copies of it. It's a great cast and a great director with great lines.
We like to watch it at least once a year...😊
This warmed my heart for sure. Thank you.
Cary Elwes as James Harcourt, arriving at the scene restaurant in "Another Country" Marek Kanievska's 1984 movie was OUR prince charming. You can't imagine his impact on us. Oh ! James !
I love this movie, and what a great reminder. Thanks
" Beautiful girl who didn't mind being set on fire.." LOL!!!
I walked down the isle to it
Totally delightful. Is Rob Reiner one of the loveliest most real human beings ?He’s amazing.
Not anymore sadly
