This is one of those uniquely American pieces of musical mythology that weaves a coming of age story into a great grounded narrative with so much heart, it’s one of my favorite sleeper hits.
Thanks for reacting
Agreed 🤙🏻🤙🏻 thanks for watching my guy
One of my all time top movies. It's got a bit of everything. It can certainly give you the chills!
The acting in this movie is so freegan good by everyone! Steve Vai guitar legend playing Jack Butler
Steve Vai ruled her. Absolute perfect casting
I like the fact they got Steve Vai to star in this film in the last scene. Hes one hell of a guitarist.
Definitely
Had no idea this movie existed, so it was great to watch for the first time with you Rob. The story of Robert Johnson is an interesting one, especially from the folklore aspect of it.
I looked it up the other day after watching this! Really cool story! Kinda surprised I was unaware of it to be honest. Thanks for hanging out and watching it with me Patrick!
...and the people who knew him believed that stuff for real.
You didn’t miss read the cop situation. Somethings change, but at the same time don’t. Corrupt systems continue, just the pieces change.
Crossroads is a great little movie, a real gem that's as timeless as the story it tells.
Good story, well acted by a fine cast, great blues soundtrack, and a legendary face off at the finale, good stuff.
Cheers.
I have a theory about this movie if you notice when Willie goes to the crossroads for a deal he asks for Legba as in Papa Legba patron spirit of the crossroads and he is usually accompanied by dogs but in this film he is riding a carriage with two kids and later we see one of those kids as an adult in the final battle acting like a female dog in heat , I believe he didn't know who Legba was so Legba passed in front of him and Willie missed it and that's when Scratch aka Lucifer appears in Legba's place and makes Willie make a pact instead of asking the spirit of Legba for extra mojo luck
That’s pretty cool! Thanks for sharing
Wow!! I've seen this movie at least 20 times and I never picked up on that, that's good theory
Jack Butler was more than just disgraced when he lost the duel, in doing so he lost his soul to the devil. A twist to the story that you may not be aware of is the piece Eugene played. It was Caprice No 5 by violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. He was known as the Devil's Violinist because he played so well like a man possessed at twelve notes per second. It was believed he made a pact with the devil
Yes....The Devil's Violinist....
There's a lot of people who forget that Eugene was a progeny. And he went to Juilliard. The classical piece he is playing here is the same one he did in class at the beginning of the movie.
The guy in the begging is supposed to be Robert Johnson , who any person who knew him believe that he learned how to play by ging down to the crossroads to sell his soul in exchange it for the ability to play.
After checking this movie out I went down a rabbit hole of old blue’s folklore. Really cool stuff
I am a blues guitarist. You have to have love and lost it to feel enough pain to know what the blues is. Every note you play is your emotions pouring out. You can`t fake that. That is why blues will always be the best! Shred is just knowing notes to play. Blues is pouring your heart and soul out in the music. That is the difference.
Nah. Shred is also emotion. Anger.
Steve Vai played both parts of the guitar battle. He is an awesome guitarist and there are many live performance vids here on RUclips.
@8:17 I keep cracking up laughing at how your cat is cuddled up in such an odd place and position lol hahahahahahah
Great reaction. I watched this movie when i was in college when it first came out. It’s great to see the younger generation getting into this classic and timeless gem. So glad you watched the whole movie. A lot of reactions only watch the final scene. Other must see’s from this era: dirty rotten scoundrels, hunt for red October and princess bride.
Truly an underrated musical classic.
one of my top 10 favorite movies
He won the guitar battle because Jack Butler was a rock guitarist, so he wasn't trained how to play classical guitar, and lightning boy was
Jack butler hadn't trained his whole life to learn how to play Mozart. To play classical guitar you have to train for several years.
I love the fact that Eugene had to catch up to Steve the entire battle. Steve lead all the way and Eugene brilliantly held his own. Then the 1 time that Eugene got the lead. Steve couldn't hack it. Nothing beats true talent.
Jack Butler (played by Vai) had a great deal of talent. Eugene didn't have as much. But, what he had that Butler didn't was an education at arguably The Premier music schools in the world and practice with those bad azz German composers, namely Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Something even Eugene struggled with over a long period of time.
Butler couldn't compete with the Education and Mozart. Vai, on the other hand, likely really knows much about classical music. If he couldn't actually play that piece, I'd be surprised because Vai is truly an extremely talented musician
@@LA_HA I agree. But I was only judging Vai's character he played. Bc Jack wasn't talented and had to sell his soul.
I consider Vai the best or top 3 guitar players of all time. I went to his concert back whe. This movie came out.
@@lilbit2870 Lucky. That must've been a great concert.
And you're right. If Butler had talent, he wouldn't have sold his soul.
Still, is it possible he had talent, but couldn't break into the business, so he took the short road in?
Supposedly, there are people in Hollywood who did the same thing. Ha
Jack Butler character is Steve Vai
Had this great movie in my collection for 15 years.
Had seen it when it was released
in the Spring of 1986
my dad loves this film.
Boy, this is a blast from the past!🤣
Haha I’m glad I checked it out! I know i’m mainly a horror reaction channel but it’s fun to switch it up every now and then!
@@therobw When this 1st came out, I really didn’t think it’d be that interesting of a film. I only watched it cause I was a bored 17 year old kid with nothing better to do (and I thought Jaime Gertz was cute, lol). But I ended up being pretty impressed with it & rewatched it a few times on cable back in the day. I’d pretty much forgotten all about it in the 35 years since then, until your reaction. So thank you for that. 👍
Such a fun, underrated flick. Love it. Glad you did too.
My son and I were watching this and when Steve Vai lost, he said in his best Forrest Gump voice "sometimes there's just not enough frets".
😂😂😂
Actually a dang good movie in my opinion, thanks for sharing your thoughts analysis and reaction!
Saw this when it first came out. Highly underrated.
And no, it is not "the karate kid" actually playing the guitar.
That guitarist is Arlen Roth guitar teacher he's the one who taught Ralph Macchio how to play for the movie
It appears that Robert Johnson's deal with the devil also included coming back in a few hundred years as a Vulcan.
Who knows 🤷🏻♂️
This film is like a lost gem that not many talk about nowadays which is a shame! I just love how the 'deal with the devil' is played very ambiguously with no fireworks if that makes sense (apart from the duel at the end of course which was nothing short of spectacular)!
This has to be one of my favourite music films ever, right behind Eddie and the Cruisers II and ahead of the first Eddie and the Cruisers.
That deputies just like, "shit they said something now I've to share that money with the sheriff."
Rob, I missed out on your reaction of this lesser-known Walter Hill movie from 1986. Back in the 1990s I recorded this movie with my vcr frrom a Dutch tv channel, saw it a few times, but at that time I was not really familiar with (especially Delta) Blues music. In the last 25 years I dived more into the old Americana Blues artists, like (in the first place) Robert Johnson, Leadbelly (there's a great 1976 movie about this man), Son House, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Walter Hill is btw one of my first favorite movie directors, which I followed his career, since the mid 1980s, so his ''Crossroades'' was a late one, I experienced, later in life....
Nice Pete! After checking this flick out a few weeks back I’ve been diving into some more Blues. Definitely was a blind spot for me (music wise)
The guy from the beginning standing out at the crossroads was suppose to be Robert Johnson. The genius blues guitarist.
New Sub, This movie is one of the greatest, guitar battle is best scene in the movie, story line history from way back and is amazing tale of the battle for ur soul...altho did hear that Stevie had hard time trying to mess up...Thanx so much, Peace
🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
The guy who shows up at the crossroads towards the end dog the film is Robert Judd. Who only acted in this film and another film called Fight For Your Life (1977) which I'd highly recommend you react to. It's on RUclips, it's an exploitation thriller and it was banned when it was released
Love this movie and the soundtrack. Ry Cooder played Ralph's guitar
I really miss the days when trailers didn’t give anything away.
Haven’t seen this movie in years, but have been waiting for someone to react to it. Thanks, and I find these people to be just as ridiculous as you do.
“Hands on the cheeks” forced reactions are the worst lol. Just be yourself and watch the movie dude 🤷🏻♂️
How could she left him how could she?!?? I will never leave you Ralph❤
Cobra Kai! Cobra Kai! Cobra Ka... Oh. Oh yeah, this movie. XD Sick pick. Good times.
Haha cmon man there’s probably a thousand other reactors watching that show on RUclips
@@therobw Oh, for sure. I was just taking a cheap shot at Ralph Macchio. Instead of karate, that boy's got himself a git box. Musical dueling, man. What's not to love?
Thats the thing at the end the devil has to keep his end of the bargain. Because I believe it was on Supernatural. One demon said I believe it was Crowley they have to honor there deals. Because if they don't no one will make a deal with them in the future. Because word will get around they don't honor their deals. So it's bad for business if they don't honor those deals. In one episode where a demon is making deals. Saying he will give someone X years. But then having them killed off long before that time comes. Basically someone makes a deal with him for 5 years. But instead of coming to get them in 5 years. He would send someone to kill them in one. So they whore killed 4 years too soon. So Crowley made it perfectly clear that demons have to honor their deals. Basically that demon made no future deals an would never make any deals in the future. He was killed as an example to honor deals. As Crowley put it if the demons don't keep their word and honor their deals. Then no one would even think of making a deal in the future. Because if a demon says they'll let you live for five years. They better get all 5 years there must be some degree of trust. Even tho they are selling their soul they should benefit from the deal.
Not Motown their burnout. Mississippi Delta blues….look into it. We pick a mean gituar, every now a then. Sheeeiiit son.
The greatest music ever played and the root of my first love, rock and roll.
Great movie.
This is why I love your channel, you pick interesting stuff.
Thanks Tommy!
Jack Butler is wishing that he hadn't screwed that up because he knows that is just not the place to mess up.
I just googled it and yes Ralph Macchio did play guitar in this movie some of it was dubbed
Been meaning to watch this one again, this movie inspired me to start playing the guitar around 21 years ago!
That’s awesome!
Ralph macchio actually did play some of the guitar pieces in this you learned how to play for this
It's definitely one of those films think will never watch, but turns out to be a gem of a film.not sure about the ending,I kinda hoped she would turn up again, but as you say, that's life sometimes 🙂
Yeah it was perfect for the mood I was in the other day. Thanks for the comment Steve! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤙🏻
Entertaining review Rob, can’t say I’ve seen this one before. Never change, you’re creating your own lane 🦾

Haha likewise. I just bought my cat this big jungle gym thing and she’s been playing with it nonstop. When I eventually set up an Instagram I’ll send you pictures.
@@therobw ok I bought my two cats a scratching post called the bobcat now when michael tries to pounce playfully on his sister carrie she dodges him by spring up the scratching post and sitting on top of it to where he can't reach her lol

I’m always down for some variety for the channel, I’ll look into those picks dude! Thanks
I think you'd enjoy Singham
So they clear out Willy's deal with the devil, but he still killed a man so he's going to burn anyway.
Do you take requests? If so, you should react to The Buddy Holly Story! (Gary Busey’s version)
Homeless Logan Paul reviews movies now!
Sorry Daniel-San, there’s no way you can out jam Steve Vai.😂😂😂
😂😂 I thought he did a great job mimicking the chords though!
You should watch a movie called “Better Watch Out” it’s a better experience if you go into it without knowing what it’s about
Those notes are not "hard to hit" with a slide.
Motown music! 😂 😂 Nah that predates Motown funk.
I made a disclaimer early in the video saying I was a noob on this music so go easy on me!
@@therobw 😂 my man
Jack butler couldnt match Eugene for 1 siple reason
You cant play that classical piece with a pick
