    All we ever did was disc lengthwise once and crossways once over cornstalks and called it good until spring. Worked well for us. If we really needed stalks for bedding the neighbors had a stalk chopper he would let us use but that wasn't often. We tried small baling corn stalks.... Didn't work out well at all. Like you said, hard on the baler and a quarter of the bales broke.

    • @mikep7810
      @mikep7810  2 года назад +1

      That sounds like more trouble then anything. For bigger free stall bedding packs I see how it could make decent bedding but not for tie stall barns

    Mike I think your disc will do just fine. It will cut the stalks up, put some soil on them and start the break down process. You can buy a vertical tillage tool after you win the lottery. I'm not knocking them just thinking that it's a lot of money to tie up because they are not cheap.

    • @mikep7810
      @mikep7810  2 года назад +1

    Another great vid Mike, I always love seeing them! Your partner in crime looked like he was kinda wiping out there the last few minutes of this vid! The way your disk was working the stalks down looked just excellent, it was leaving a good amount of residue on the suface. I love my Landoll disk, but it will work most everything down with almost no residue on top. Good to hear from you, I hope you and your whole family have agreat Christmas!

    Funny you don't no till. What ever is corn the year prior is beans the next year. We haven't disced in years. Rotation is the key!

    • @mikep7810

      We do rotate, I agree its key. Being a Dairy farm we also like doing tillage to incorporate the manure that we spread into the soil

    If you let the truck go, you will immediately regret it. 🤣 You’ll find all kinds of things you could have used it for. That just the way it goes when you let something go😁. Don’t blame you a bit though for letting it go and freeing up capital to buy other equipment.

    Well, at least I’m not the only one that calls it a “drop”, lol.
    Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that disk gang on the front of your chisel plow supposed to chop the stalks so they don’t plug up the plow? Could be an idea for next year. Might even save you a pass in the spring.

    • @mikep7810
      @mikep7810  2 года назад +1

      Yeah thats what they are on the chisel plow for. I've had good lucking running the disk over them to break them up then in the spring time the chisel plow does a really good job cutting them up more and mixing them with the dirt

    Once again, I'm reminded that farming, more than anything else I can think of, is a multi-generational, family occupation. From farms the scale of yours to some of the very large Midwestern farms here on RUclips, they seem to be run by families. That makes it even more sad that, at least here in the Northeast, farms seem to be disappearing.

    • @mikep7810
      @mikep7810  2 года назад +1

      I agree Stephen. It is always sad when a farm disappears. I cherish the time I get to work with my father and brother on the farm. Makes for great memories and I'm glad my children get to grow up this way
