@Destro I can't hold oblivion as more fun. The horrible loot and enemy scaling with the repetitive dungeons and oblivion gates count for too much for me. Actually the funniest game is the better one IMO. No point having more shit to do if it's repetitive, boring and pointless to do so. A big part of the morrowind fun is how much you can break it with everything. Having to abuse weakness to magic stacking in Oblivion to kill anything later on and constantly getting disarmed by 100 blocking guards is pretty dull. You litterally feel stronger staying level 1 forever. Personally, in term of fun i would rank them : Morrowind = Skyrim > Daggerfall > Oblivion. There is just nothing Oblivion can offer that isn't in another TES game.

Morrowind has more immersive quests? Oblivion is considered as the best TES game in terms of quests and factions due to their interesting premise. The factions themselves are not connected but that's more of a world-building thing, where Morrowind wins by the sole virtue of not having enemy scaling and most of them staying dead once put down.
Oblivion's a far more focused experience overall, and more accessible, though it has paid quite a price in terms of depth, but not as ultimate as Skyrim or Bethesda's Fallout games have. Morrowind's a better game simply by being more cohesive and consistent in quality, AKA combat is the only place it drops in significantly, whereas for Oblivion it's every time you enter a dungeon and see bandits in Glass armor. Oblivion is still my favorite, because it can elicit a feeling as strong as any TES game can, especially when it's your first time playing it. It has the best expansion out there, its combat and graphics have seen a greater jump from the predecessor than from it to the successor (Skyrim's combat is very much the same with few to no improvements, slower to mention as well). Its strengths and contributions are often overlooked and not considered, because there are high points of quality in Oblivion unscratched by Bethesda's later installments.

Morrowind was my first game in the series and I've mostly played it back then, while with Oblivion I played it on release day I didn't leave Imperial city, doing some random stuff which mostly ended in uninstalling the game after 1-2 hours of play. Just recently I've started to play it again and did go far beyond starting location and must say I enjoy it a lot more than Morrowind. Scaling enemies is a big let down, but I think being restricted with a turn based table top rules in a real time game is beyond stupid. What I like even more is NPCs have their schedules, making game world less static, than it already was in Morrowind. Voice acting progressively grows on me, especially when doing quests. Having less topics to speak with NPCs is somewhat good and bad at the same time. Quest markers while not a bad addition in my opinion, but one quest was kinda ruined for me. But honestly, I remember how annoying for me was to search for Dwemer puzzle box or a lightning axe, that I learned from book. While I think it's okay to not have quest markers for side quests learned from books, can't say I feel the same about main quest and side quest givers.
Overall I still like Morrowind, but with each playthrough my interest go down, while Oblivion I thought was inferior back then, now growing in my eyes. So far the only bad thing is that stupid scaling as I've met a Daedroth in Kvatch just because I've decided to do it 10 levels later.

I love the Elder Scrolls universe and the Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim trilogy. But I can't agree that Morrowind is better then Oblivion. Oblivion wins by combat mechanics. Hit and miss combat is so tedious that either you need to rest a lot to regenerate your fatigue all the time or hoard fatigue potions or even use a mod so that running won't be as fatigue-costly. It gets better with higher levels, as you can run faster. In Oblivion you fight a little like in a hack and slash game, you need to spam attack and dodge melee hits by running around, it's much more enjoyable. And also - Oblivion level-scaling is so much better than no enemy leveling in Morrowind. In the latter you're sometimes too weak or too strong, you need to play around with the difficulty slider. In Oblivion there are some difficulty spikes too as you level, but there's less management from the player needed.
As for the main quest - it's better, richer in Morrowind. But all other guilds -are better in Oblivion. There's very little story in Morrowind in the guild questlines and also side quests are much more interesting in Oblivion. So only the lore brought with Morrowind main quest wins and perhaps the province is more menacing. But the quality of life improvements are really big in Oblivion.

Morrowind: You had to actually read and use your brain to solve problems and quests, the factions and people were far more believable, and combat, while rather janky, truly made you feel like you were progressing and growing in power, while your class you chose to build had meaning.
Oblivion: *Durr hurr, here's a quest marker for everything,* everyone in the world behaves practically the same towards you in every playthrough, with all guilds being accepting to you despite whom you may be apart of, combat is a glorified "smack it till it dies" with terrible scaling enemies to the point all immersion is broken, and player classes feel so streamlined to almost the point of being pointless, at least when compared to Morrowind.

I do love how you have to ask for directions in Morrowind, while also having you rely on public transport, but for roleplay purposes I just find Map Markers in Oblivion to be that the Hero just has a map on him perhaps given to him by Baurus to find Jauffre, and the map already has markers for every major location, and it's just a matter of the route you take. Fast traveling to the cities is a bit immersion breaking, but you can also choose to just walk or ride the whole way and still find lots of encounters and things you'd never otherwise experience by just relying on fast travel

Got to disagree with your analysis of oblivion’s atmosphere. I will agree that at times it feels divorced from the main quest, but I wouldn’t exactly count that as a negative. Some people play oblivion while never touching the main quest. Personally I find the main quest to be my least favorite in oblivion. Even so eventually they slowly encroach in and you get a feeling that the plane of oblivion is bleeding through, once you reach a certain point in the story. I definitely wouldn’t describe it as bland either. It’s pretty subjective between the atmosphere between the two. Do you prefer a desolate wasteland or a lively fantasy based world. I prefer the story book feeling of oblivion. There are parts in oblivion that are dark and swampy as well.

    • @alexandrebertrand1069

The problem with Oblivion's main quest is that the intro pushes you to do it. Morrowind's intro was better, you just had a package to deliver and you could say that your character just don't give a damn about that. In Oblivion, you're directly escaping from prison with the Blades, the Emperor of Tamriel is killed in front of you and he gives you one of the most valuable item in the world, telling you that you have a great destiny. It's a bit weird for your character to stop giving a damn about all that happened.
Atmosphere is subjective but I will never be not pissed off that Bethesda threw away the weird lore about Cyroodil: the tensions between Nibenay and Colovia, the hundreds of weird cults present in the Imperial City, the jungle.

    • @damien1065
      @damien1065 4 года назад +1

Alexandre Bertrand I agree that more of a blank slate is preferred over being thrust onto the main quest. I think Bethesda does this because most people aren’t into role playing and would feel directionless without a helping hand. It’s fairly neutral though, you can rationalize the reason for being in jail in many ways. Also just because the emperor entrusted his amulet to you doesn’t necessarily mean you have to RP a hero or something positive. You could view the emperor as incompetent and the refuse to help his cause. I think they did a decent job balancing between giving you a direction and allowing creative freedom.

I played both a lot, but I always found Morrowind more fascinating. And it's not the main story, I don't really care about stories. Atmosphere and lore is what I like; that's also why I like there are so many books in the Elder scrolls (even though most of them are poorly written or just plain dull).
On a more gamy side: oblivion is mostly nicer to play, but in Morrowind you are truly free to play and do what you want with the game engine. You can create absurd spells f.ex. And you can get lost in Viviv underground if you don't take care - there is little handholding and controlling on how you "should" play the game.
Oblivion has the boring and annoying oblivion gate opening up at random; you almost have to close them. But the difficulty slider effectively ruin the game if you get to be too high a level. If you do, bandits wears expensive glass or ebon armor for no reason. And unlike in Morrowind you can't really get your hands on top equipment early on because it's tied to your level.

I will say oblivion has great npc immersion. But those damned portals is so repetitive. Morrowind has much more freedom and you can tell the interface was not made for consoles where oblivion is too oversized. All can be fixed with mods of course, so can Morrowind's rng for hit rate with accurate attack mod, I personally never liked being at the mercy of rng. If the worlds of elder scrolls get better with newer games, everything else gets better the further back you go.
Oblivion has one of the best endings where Martin sacrifice himself to save Tamriel. The world is changed forever and leaves a bittersweet feeling like you said.
If you could take parts from each game to create a better experience,
Story, lore, npcs and dialogue: Morrowind
Gameplay and combat: a balance between III-V
World, Animations, customization and detail: Skyrim
Story, dialogue and npc wise Skyrim was abysmal, no amount of mods could make that game playable, believe me i tried.

I don't think "Moral Ambiguity" makes a story better or worse. You can have a villain/antagonist be vile and pure evil while having them still be very well written and enjoyable. I see this thrown around a ton this idea that something is smarter/better written just cause a antagonist is better written just on the basis that they have a more "Morally grey" point of view, and the truth is that it isnt the case you can craft something interesting with either morally gray or morally black and white and still have a complex and entertaining story. Both these options are just tools to use in crafting a story they aren't strict rules you have to follow. In the end of the day the most important factor is EXECUTION.

I never played Morrowind but Oblivion was my first elder scrolls game and it is pure nostalgia and overall amazingness for me. However I do feel like Morrowind is the best elder scrolls game, I can't believe I grew up with the original xbox and never got that game

I prefer oblivion. since i grow up with it. Morrowind never tried it and prolly will not try it because of the graphics and never found it interesting really. I also love skyrim. Skyrim is my favorite game overall the elder scrolls series, because... Dragons.

Yes, i just started playing morrowind after all these years.
Fked up my charcter build, tried to make a mage, fought a worm with dagger and died. Started new character, spear focused build, and build stats accordingly. And the game's combat kinda became p*ss easy at default difficulty and having a blast so far.
Have u tried morrowind yet? If u are even slightly interested in old school rpg, then morrowind is a must play.

The real contest should be between Morrowind and Daggerfall. Whether the sheer scale and ambition win over more cohesive mechanics and much more unique worldbuilding with multilayered lore and hidden details.
    My personal ranking would be:
Morrowind > Daggerfall > Skyrim >>>> Arena >>>>> getting shot in *both* kneecaps > Oblivion (without SI)
    (attempting objectiveness)
Subjectively I might be guilty of swapping Skyrim and DF.

Morrowind is harder to get into because of the dated character graphics and gameplay. But the story is top notch and the set pieces still hold up. Also Levitation is never NOT fun, and the customizationis insane for back then! Not bad but it definitely lacks in gameplay, especially the combat
Oblivion I always found the most fun to play and while the story isn't as good there are so many tiny details. Also the DLCs are all good except for the Horse Armor. Also I wish they kept Medium Armor and the ability to wear robes over your armor.
Skyrim while having the best combat of the 3 feels smaller by comparison, also the fact they removed more skills, the ability to cast spells while having something in both hands, no birth signs, no classes, and an overall dull landscape make it hard for me personally to enjoy. But the cooking, crafting, marriage and adoption systems I do like.

Oblivion is better to me because it's about the culture of the empire, a culture that I find rather interesting. I never have liked morrowind because I don't like the dunmer culture. I like nord and imperial culture the most as well as akaviri culture. I know that the blades are kinda idiotic in the 4th and 3rd era but the idea of an organization of dragonslayers and bodyguards for the emperor just sounds awesome to me. I like the blades, but delphine is just not a blade in my eyes. Esbern is cool but he is not a blade in my eyes. Baerus and accilius bolar and jaufrey, they are blades. I believe that skyrims blades are traitors to their own code. The blades are the guardians of the dragonborn prophecy, not cutthroat dragonslayers who would betray the dragonborn over a stupid dragon with war crimes that were long since corrected through heroic acts. The blades are defenders of the dragonborn, not dragon police.

This was a good breakdown and I agree completely. My biggest problem with Oblivion is that it discourages leveling up and my strongest character by far was a lvl 1 that never slept and had a 100 conjuration so I would just summon a Daedroth that 1 hit everything. My biggest problems with Morrowind was just the AI getting stuck on things which also happened in Oblivion but less
