It is so wonderful to hear a pianist of Ms. Argerich caliber perform. I love her rhythmic sensibility and physical approach to playing the piano. Having said that I also relish the rich sound she produces. Thank you Martha, you are inspirational.
There are wonderfull renditions of this work, but Martha is allways in a class of her own. She was born to play 20th century music like Prokofiev, Ravel and many others... and also the orchestra is very, very, good, don't forget this is a also a sort of concerto for orchestra!
Nobody but NOBODY can play this piece as perfectly as our Martha! The cut off at the end is exactly perfect - an echo of the horse whip beginning. She is amazing - one of the truly great pianists of all time. Thank you for posting this.
There's little more wonderful music than Ravel's piano works and, coupled with orchestra...well, it doesn't get any better. Argerich is a ball of incandescence married to flawless lyricism, and the ensemble does her proud. The second movement always reduces me to bittersweet tears, especially heartfelt with this remarkable performance. Every kudo in the book for this luminous performance.
I am admittedly a Martha fan, but she still constantly amazes me. It seems that regardless of the composer, or the difficulty of the piece, or the cultural genre, she not only performs the mechanics of her art with near perfection but she somehow goes beyond. It's almost as if she's in the head of the composer, playing always the way he wrote it, and sometimes the way he thought he wrote it, and then, in her own inimitable way, sometimes, this is probably what you meant it to sound like. I don't know if anyone else hears her this way, or even if she does, but I think it's what really sets her apart from other excellent pianists.....really unique.
Argerich's interpretation during the English horn solo (15:16) is remarkable. It's one time where the piano doesn't have the melody, and she approaches the music with her ears and clever musical instincts. This gives the orchestra soloists space to shine, and they kill it!
Yes, that happend also in Zürich last Weekend. She tryed to Play the same place as here like a Duett where she would be a secondo, and the english Hornist just played like accompaniment. In General, the Royal Philharmonic orchestra was too much routined and seemed to Play a gig.
@@goatlps The only thing that killed with this comment was my opinion of your tastes. Being a bully is a waste of time. And btw fwiw I don't watch reality tv music talent shows.
I love how she's already standing up before the last note is even played lol. but no really she is amazing amazing and so was the english horn player! bravo!
the second movement is simply breath-taking. I agree, I have not heard anyone play this concert like her, not even Benedetti Michelangeli, as Remsan03 said. Martha Argerich is the incarnation of perfection. The orchestra is also fantastic, must give credit to it and its conductor!
Viva Ravel. Saludos desde México.
Absolutely phenomenal, electrifying. Argerich shows such mastery here - in a live performance! that it almost defies belief. I especially love this piece because it goes against the usual idea of Ravel as "precious" : but with its jazz riffs, and the Looney Tunes finale, this has lots of acid bite, as well as the typical Ravel nostalgia...
What a great opportunity to see and hear the great Martha Argerich!! She owns this piece and after hearing her versions none other will do. A real drag that this outstanding video and musical performance cuts off before a proper conclusion!!! Still thank you to whomever posted it.
God I love Argerich's technique. Those glissandos right at the start are so effortless, it looks like she's doing something as casual as rolling pizza dough or something. A refreshing change from younger pianists who play challenging technical parts like their life depended on it, hunched over and swaying back and forth.
EXTRAORDINARIO CONCIERTO, CON SU INTIMISTA Y ROMÁNTICO 2° MOVIMIENTO, DE ÉSA GENIALIDAD DE MAURICE RAVEL, CON DOMINIO ORQUESTAL Y TEMÁTICO, QUE NO PODEMOS DEJAR DE RELACIONARLO CON SU HERMANO, EL CONCIERTO PARA LA MANO IZQUIERDA, TRÁGICO Y GENIAL... ¡ BRAVO POR EL MAESTRO RAVEL, LA ORQUESTA, SU DIRECTOR Y MARTHA ARGERICH, MI COMPATRIOTA GENIAL !!!...
tutto splendido. :-***
Amazing concert ! She is a great musician . I love the way she plays this second mouvement . She phrases with a lot of expression keeping the simplicity and the elegance
This is so beautiful, I feel I will start to cry from pure joy. Then comes... a commercial break. A COMMERCIAL BREAK. Never happened before in a video with classical music. Oh, I know. We need all these commercials to finance this, and so on. It's just that I was really enjoying this. And now I'm not.
The part around 17:17 to 17:37 in the second movement which to me is the peak of ecstasy of this concerto produces an experience of journey of the end of a perfect dream as I am being awakened by the dawn of a perfect day.
15;30 duet with piano and oboe. Goosebumps, tears rolling down my cheeks, hair standing on end at back of head. On another subject, Gershwin went to visit Ravel to request composition lessons from him. Ravel told him that he has nothing to teach him and that he would just ruin a perfectly excellent thing.,
Wow, You know that Ravel liked to challenge the orchestra (more demanding than Frank Zappa), claiming the beat wasn't accurate and precise, but here - damn, and I never heard of her before.
Don't even bother to check other performances as listed on the right >>> No one, and I mean no one plays this better than her. Not even Michelangeli (which pained me to say because Michelangeli was like a perfection personified). And how about other younger pianist, you say? Pffttt.... Puh-lease!
+remsan03 She's no match for the Herbie Hancock version. She actually makes a BIG, no HUGE mistake at 14:15, and she shows it. But this is one superb version too.

Not heard this version until now, absolutely stunning, she plays it like she wrote it!
Martha Argerich is a genious!!!!!!!!

Natalia Benedetti ABM more beatiful performace
She is the best of the best nobody is like her.
Yes!Queen Martha!
Love how she shoots right up on the last chord!
For me she is the best pianist today.

+Jacob Hallman Well said! A fine example of why she is, to my mind, the greatest living pianist.
Yes, she is. I often think that Prokofiev would have LOVED her playing of his 3rd concerto.
Yes, that happend also in Zürich last Weekend. She tryed to Play the same place as here like a Duett where she would be a secondo, and the english Hornist just played like accompaniment. In General, the Royal Philharmonic orchestra was too much routined and seemed to Play a gig.

Gorgeous and exciting performance. BRAVA !!!!!
my favorite performance of this concerto
lucky audience!
Ravel Piano Concerto by Argerich.
I move and cry.
Good lord this is absolutely beautiful. What a treat to hear this. :)
Amo questa grande pianista, donna eccezionale ❤
Her virtuosism scare look like if she come from another world. She is fantastic.
Magnifique!
Martha Argerich is a great and real pianist. She has been playing the piano for nearly half century.
👍👍👍

The most eloquent interpretation of the 2nd movement!
She nailed it in this performance. Wow. I bought recordings of Argerich but did not become a fan. This is excellent!
17:27 ...aaah....that chord.....goosebumps every time
Valentin Chantereau greetings, random internet person! 18:13 has quite an effect on me as well
+Valentin Chantereau 2ns Mov is a mystery of intimity. Excellent rendition this one
+Valentin Chantereau me too everytime, for what it's worth.
Long live the Queen!
no words
Bravo Martha !!!

You can really hear Gershwin's influence on Ravel, in this piece. Mutual admiration from each to the other.
9:05 is the 2nd movement you're probably wanting to hear.
The part around 17:17 to 17:37 in the second movement which to me is the peak of ecstasy of this concerto produces an experience of journey of the end of a perfect dream as I am being awakened by the dawn of a perfect day.
This is by far the version which the percussion section can be heard the most clearly to me, really interesting.
Wonderful.

ARGERICH IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
super, danke
That is a Steinway! Modified by the Fabrini Co. It is one of several Model D's which are World Class pianos. Do your homework.
Good to see the enlightened correction
Bravo Roberto Rossi!! Gran trompetista.
La música de Ravel es siempre bella 😄
thank you so much for posting. Is there a available recording of this concert.

she is wonderfull
not to mention the piece by Ravel
I wonder how many times she has played this concerto. She pretty much owns it.
LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

13:35 - 13:54 goosebumps
it is a Piccolo, which is like a smaller, higher-pitched flute.

For once in a concerto the 2nd mvt. is the best.

the second movement...
⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘😊
I like how she jumps right up when it's finished
As does Helene Grimaud when she finishes a piece, and who also plays this piece to perfection.
I. Allegramente 0:32
II. Adagio assai 9:05
III. Presto 18:52
I think the third moviment is quite the best for the syncro orchestra piano.
which instrument was playing 00:39 ?
9:04 Adagio.
Gogogogo.

Concerto interruptus?
Leonard Bernstein said he could be awakened in middle of night and play this piece
Anyone here because of Nodame ?
I really wish I could appreciate music like she does. The only observation I'm sure of is that this pianist is extremely skilled hahaha
Yes!! I like this piece although I don't have the knowledge to truly appreciate it.
hahaha yup
why did it get cut off...RIGHT AT THE FUCKING END
da 19:00 a 20:47 :)
GRANDE!!!BUT PLEASE: DON'T CUT the end!!!!!!!1
Was it just me or Argerich almost blew up most of her part during the English horn solo? (from 15:16) The two were not at all together at some points.
it was just you.
Don't even bother to check other performances as listed on the right >>>
No one, and I mean no one plays this better than her. Not even Michelangeli (which pained me to say because Michelangeli was like a perfection personified).

Herbie Who???????
+Dirk Schippers Herbie Hancock and Argerich; admirable musicians, both :)
+remsan03 Your comment and attitude is nothing but annoying.
Sticking to the 'one definitive interpretation' brings you nowhere.
the bassoonist's fingers at 20:51...how in the?
never heard of a fabbrini piano before
