Christian I really appreciate you being articulate, informative, and you really explained things in great perspective. I've have tried to watch so many vids to learn and the people making them are so fast, and so unclear. Man I'm a 65 year old geezer who is trying to learn a young man's game here and I need clear instructions and suggestions like you just gave in this vid. Thumbs up and subbed Thanks a bunch DJ Geezer ( winks )
I just got the 400 for Christmas. It replaces the RB. Comes with a license for Rekordbox so you don't have to pay for pro software.

All of Pioneer's performance DDJ controllers now all have their own built-in soundcard, offloading most of the sound processing there. That way the scratch latency is also much tighter and it gives better sound! So you're not perhaps having the same freedom as you would with CDJs, but it will sure sound good on proper set of speakers!
My first setup: 2x American Audio TTD2400s and an XDM200 mixer - purchased May 2004. Relatively inexpensive but it was a damn sight better than belt drive. 2nd Setup: 2x American Audio DTI 1.8s and ADJ QD-3 - Purchased Mar. 2005 as a package deal. Loved these decks to bits and ended up getting 7 yrs use out out them. 3rd Setup: 2x Reloop RP6000 (Pur. Oct 2011 and Numark M6USB (Apr. 2012). Not the greatest club mixer but built like a brick toilet. Moved to DVS in Apr 2014 and swapped out my RP6000s for the 7000s in Sep 2015. 4th Setup: Reloop RMX80 (purchased Dec 2016) and Pioneer XDJ700 (since April). Finally said goodbye to DVS and switched to a more club standard system. Curent setup: 2x Denon SC5000's and a used Pioneer DJM800 so I can take advantage of the digital connections.
I know this video is old but the advice is still current!!! Awesome video. Very well rounded info, nice touch adding that the type of music you play also plays a factor in deciding what to purchase. I've been dj'ing for over 10 years now and unfortunately this video didn't exist then! Because this video is old some of the hardware that was mentioned is now old but like he said pioneer is very reliable and a trusted brand. So even if you picked up those various decks used, you would have solid starter gear to use (& PRACTICE) until you were ready to go out and purchase the latest and greatest that the industry has to offer! Great Job Christian!!
So If you are paying full price for DJ equipment than I suggest you check out a website my friend told me about. Http://thedjpro.co/affordable-equipment/ ... I paid $100 for my first monthly payment and received. Dj sx2 in 2 days. NO CREDIT CHECK, NO INTEREST! Low prices! It will change your life dude!
As a dj who has been at it for 15+ years who has used vinyl, cdjs, & controllers, I can say this is some very sound advice. It wasn't til just a few wks ago that I upgraded to the 900NXS2. Also most important thing is to take care of your gear. I managed to squeeze 14 years out of 2 mixers that were on the low end of the spectrum cost wise.
when I first bought my ddjsb3, I spent weeeeeeeeeeeeeks, researching it, like $250 was so much to spend on dj equipment, (so I thought!) but then I just upgraded to an xdj-rx2 for $1700, which is soo awesome, now I want the rmx-1000, another 800 bucks...investing in my future!
I couldn't help but notice your interest in purchasing a controller. My buddy just told me about a website article he was reading that told him where he could purchase brand new gear for guaranteed low prices, NO INTEREST, NO CREDIT, MONTHLY PAYMENT PLANS all online. I just bought a DDJ SX2 and $125 was my first payment. showed up in 2 days. Check it out! thedjpro.co/affordable-equipment/?et_fb=1
i run my laptop with virtual dj running through my Allen & Heath 24 channel Gl2400 desk with Crown XTI amps powering Martin Audio W8VDQ tops with 4x Martin Audio WS218x subs XTA processing, Lighting wise i run 8x Martin Mac500 and 8x Martin Mac600 for uplighters and 4 x Martin Atomic 3000 strobes running on Avolites pearl expert desk with prolyte trussing. for smaller speaker setup i use Bose 802s ,Bose 502B subs Bose B1500 amps, Allen & Heath Zed 12 desk , but lighting i take 2 Martin Mac500s
Im so glad i came across this video because i wanna learn to be a DJ some day and hearing how reliable decks are makes me more confident because computer due have a tendency to crash so im glad i watched this video about which is better.
Hey man best vid I've watched about what gear to buy - cheers! I'm wanting to get into DJing but am wanting to start making/producing tracks as well, could you clear up why you need decks over a controller for this and is there any production software that you'd recommend?
I promise you will come back to this thread to thank me! Especially because I'm going to tell you where you can buy any piece of equipment for your setup for small monthly payments, NO CREDIT, NO INTEREST!!!!, AND GUARANTEED LOW PRICES! I explain many different plans they have for different DJ controllers and I differentiate the differences in each controller so check it out! thedjpro.co/10-dj-controllers/
why not 1200 Md3's? not trying to be a nerd, just wondering if there is a problem with the md3s? Im rocking a pair of Pioneer cdj 900 and a 900 nexus mixer which I scored at a pawn shop for just under 2k. They were pawned by a local promoter who purchased them after he booked Steve Aoki. My first setup was Numark TT1 and a 2 channel Numark Mixer back in the Spring of 2000
Coming from a hip hop / edm dj / producer ( IN MY OPINION ) the stereotype that hip hop dj’s only use turntables is very overrated. Ive scratched and blended on CDJs and controllers there really is no difference as long as you know what you’re doing..UNLESS you like the feel of using turntables then thats on you but ive also used turntables to mix house music theres literally no difference compared to controllers.
Your a fuckin stud. You nailed it when you said its not the equipment, but the creativity. Very informative video btw. I hope you inspire new DJ's everywhere! Peace - Dj nytmayr
i ended up going with the dennon sc5000 setup, 2 decks. even though djing is just another hobby for me, and speaker design is probably where ill take my career, its imo the best purchace ive made to this day, second to my pc.
I' ll by now the DDJ Ergo-K from Pioneer I'm nearly a half year a DJ now and always played with virtual DJ Now i change to Traktor LE and the DDJ Ergo ... i think that it's a very well product for 480€!
would it make any difference to buy a controller and then a launchpad seperately then to buy the DDJ-SX? also does a different software really matter if you have the right controllers and launchpads that basically have all of the extra features an expensive software would have?
My eyes fell on the pioneer DDJ-SB because of the cheap price and simplicity. I'm a full beginner and I want to mix mainly Hardcore and a bit of hardstyle which are both genres fitting in the house music category. would this be a good choice?
B. Tickles Yeah I've seen that the sb 2 came out. but I believe there isn't any major difference. would it be best to wait for a bit because the price of the original would most likely drop for quite a bit
I'm specifically looking for equipment that can allow me to import a published classic rock song, and isolate certain tracks to sample into my custom house mix, what would be the best beginner tools, but ones that will allow me to do that? I have nothing but a laptop now.
Controllers not always only control software on your computer. There are a couple of controllers out there(like the Pioneer aero or the cheaper Stanton scs 4dj) that are build as stand alone systems, what basicly means that you can use them without a laptop. ...almost the same way you normally use cdjs.
Hello Christian, quick question. I bought a Pioneer DDJ-SB2-Serato DJ cause I could afford it. However, I like Traktor better. Is it possible to map it and how? Thank you
quite helpful. im 15 and have been a mobile dj for the past 3, 4 years now. I have been using controllers with in that time. as I am approaching the age of being able to dj in clubs I think its time to take it up a notch and go with something club suitable. I was looking at the high end nexus range from pioneer. probably the 900 nexus mixer and either the 900 or 2000 for the turn tables. but the question I want to ask is it worth saving an extra £800 to go with a nexus 2000 cdj or go with the 900 nexus. my style of music is future house, deep house and music from disclosure
why most people overlook Pioneer XDJ R1? XDJ AERO costs as much and doesnt have "CDJ-s built in" A friend of mine owns it and TOTALLY DESTROYS the competition. It has 2 CD players (CDJ 350 "style") and a standalone mixer (~like DJM350) and you can also use it with Serato/Traktor/Virtual DJ/Rekordbox/ iPad/iPhone and USB! Great Filter selection,Quality wise is ASTONISHING and the price is right. If you want something with PIONEER QUALITY and you want to have options in the way you can DJ this is the one. I play with Kontrol S2 MK2 and a laptop. I dont DJ that often and most definately dont need 4 decks. Native Instruments had a christmas promo for the Z2 at 500€(it is much more compact and has line-ins that S2 MK2 lacks ) which was tempting .
Yes, I can imagine that you don't rely on that Hercules rmx 2... But I looked up the vci 300 and in my country it still costs 400 €... Which I can't quite afford. Also the vestax has only one input, no midi mappings and no fx onboard... Which I find quite annoying... ;)
Hey Christian I wanted to get your opinion on the Pioneer product DDJ We Go that comes with Virtual DJ. & I'm a beginner that wanted to get started on djing since I spent money on the producer edition of FL Sudio, so if you can replie, that would be great :)
I'm going with the XDJ-RX! I've been mixing and making mashups/edits with Virtual DJ on a laptop for more than 4 years, and since I just turned 18 I'm going to buy the XDJ-RX so I can practice and play CDJs at clubs (I already have some invites to play!). Think it's a good plan?
Sir, I'm really into hi-tech psytrance and I really want to learn this genre. What software would you recommend as well as What equipment should I buy? Please reply
Nice summary and I agree. Better to get basic setup and learn the skills. I'd rather get production gear and entry controller so I can learn both production and mixing/DJ stuff.
I don't see how 2 CDJ-350s and a DJM-350 is 900-1100 bucks? One CDJ-350 alone will run around 600, and the DJM-350 another 600. So that's around 1800 bucks, unless I'm missing something? Where do you get those so cheap?
Hi, I'm new to Dj stuff and i'm wondering whether XDJ-R1 might fit or not.. I have made some tracks and i have logic pro x. I don't want just a controller.. should be able to get track via a USB pen and edit them on the DJ machine.. will XDJ-R1 do that for me?
i am looking to get my start with DJing exclusively in hiphop. I have 2 questions: 1) why do you say hiphop DJs probably want to use exclusively real turn tables? 2) if this is the case, how to hiphop DJs transport their equipment with them to venues? In NYC no one is going to be able to carry big heavy turnables around plus a mixer.
The reason why is because hip hop a lot of times not always has random bpm's (beats per minute) meaning that you may have a track playing at 95 bpm's & you just know that the next track you wanna mix in, is a banger but it's 128 bpm's and doesn't have ANY intro beat to mix into the next track. So you could learn a couple of slam mixing transitions that you use over and over and over but that gets old and tired. So hip hop lends itself really well to turntabilism/scratching. Scratching and learning to make cool transitions by scratching into or out of a track, effects like echo, backspins etc... to mix into and out of songs. Go and watch turntabilists mixing transitions and you'll see what I mean. So scratching and hip hop mixing go together like peanut butter and jelly. But you can still do these things with controllers and cdj's, but they are still no where as effective as using turntables/mixer & real vinyl bc of the better control.
should i wait with buying two cdj 2000 nexus and a djm 900 nexus? i'm asking because i don't want pioneer to release a new generation of cdjs in the next month and me having spent 5k. so do you think they'll release anything in the near future?
Great video to get an overview of the options for a beginner, thx! How would DJing with a DAW like Ableton or Bitwig work technically, if I want to have quite a bit of flexibility manipulating my own tracks, but also want to have full DJing flexibility with my commercial music library? Is it possible to sync e.g. Traktor and Bitwig?
"Thanks.. This was great'..I'm going to move into the DJ scene very soon.. I've been a active live muso for many years & my years of playing Live are numbered.. But I don't want to have to stop playing music so will move into live DJ sounds.. With a bit of live guitar, Sax & keyboard within my DJ sets.. But first things 1st.. Learn to DJ properly & then add the extras to make my DJ show unique.. Many thanks for your help.. I've just found a djset of 350's as you suggested on eBay here locally..so I will start there..& by the time I'm ready to finish my live gigs.. I'll have learnt.. Rehearsed.. & be ready to DJ live.. I have been DJaying in the past with with a DJ set up in my iPad in the pubs in my breaks,.. & at private parties..& those gigs went ok..the pubs & peeps were happy..but ..I know..I couldn't do it like that indefinitely..It's like live gigging.. Hello Christian, Can you please leave a review on the Gemini CDMP 7000 for a beginner DJ it looks pretty cool with features and is low on budget. Would really appreciate the help!

Wow!!!! Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your experience. I actually have an odd situation. I have no desire to be a deejay, but unfortunately all the local clubs play the same set and the mixes are so horrible as if they have one mix that one of them purchased and they just keep passing it around. I am a singer/songwriter so I figured that I would just buy a PA system and sing a little bit and then essentially DJ a party. The issue however is that I would not be djing... I had planned on picking my songs that I want to hear and they will just have to live with it. lol... I would just play the music and let it transition song to song. Of course, it will be organized in sets. Buuuuut the issue that I was having was I kept seeing things that said that I needed a sound card whereas I thought I just connect my laptop and play some dj software and I am done. Well.... Based on your video... That is true! and that is wonderful news. I only need a controller if I am going to truly be djing is the way I understood it. I actually like the pros that you described in the deck setup, but too rich for my blood and I think I will be happier with the computer setup as it appears to allow me to see more of the songs in the playlist. Anywayz..... I know that was alot just to say thank you.... Buuuut....Thank you and happy holidays....
I need help I'm a fuckin noob idk shit about djs but I want to dj the songs that Martin garrix and dimitri and them dj at tomorrowland what kind of dj should I get to dj those songs?
Hey man I'm a producer and I wanted to know what was best for me I like djing but I all so like remixing music witch one would u recommend me the style of music that I like to remix is just all type of edm but mostly tiesto style of music please help me out thank u
Hello Christian, Thank you so much for this, I am still a bit confused though, I plan on starting to DJ soon and I have been looking to see the best kits to start with, I would love to use a Controller with a Laptop of course but I also want to have the ability to connect microphones in case I find myself in a gathering that needs one. Also, I am used to the old school ways of connecting speakers and microphones to Amplifiers, with a controller, do I need an amplifier? Lastly, I have been so confused on the speakers to use, how do I pick one? Can I use a KRK8 or is it just a studio monitor? So sorry my questions are much, I am just so naive right now. And what do you think about the LG Xboom CM9960 for DJing?

Thanks, I decided to go with the Pioneer Ddj-Sb2 Portable 2-Channel Dj Controller For Serato Dj
For a beginner I would really recommend pioneer DDJ RB, good for the price and comes with a great software.

I picked up a behringer bcd3000 at ebay for 35 bucks.
Its almost brand new and Traktor-Software is included.
Pretty nice for beginners
Mind you, you can get a controller anywhere from 50-2000 dollars. A full set of cdjs and a mixer are up to 6000 dollars.
if you are s hiphop dj you can use both digital and old school
you should do one of these videos for starting out in lighting

A friend of mine owns it and TOTALLY DESTROYS the competition.
I was 2 lazy 2 read tha-- I was also 2 lazy 2 finish my senten-
Yes, I can imagine that you don't rely on that Hercules rmx 2... But I looked up the vci 300 and in my country it still costs 400 €... Which I can't quite afford. Also the vestax has only one input, no midi mappings and no fx onboard... Which I find quite annoying... ;)
mixing 6 months now with a pioneer DDJ WeGo , now i got better i really need cdj's !
Hey Christian I wanted to get your opinion on the Pioneer product DDJ We Go that comes with Virtual DJ. & I'm a beginner that wanted to get started on djing since I spent money on the producer edition of FL Sudio, so if you can replie, that would be great :)
What’s your opinion on the denon dj gear ie sc5000 , prime 4 are they as good as pioneer Dj can you see denon taking over pioneer in the clubs ?
Long live DJ Bran the Broken!! ^^
I've started with the pioneer wego and I'm looking to upgrade
Sir, I'm really into hi-tech psytrance and I really want to learn this genre. What software would you recommend as well as What equipment should I buy? Please reply
Nice summary and I agree. Better to get basic setup and learn the skills. I'd rather get production gear and entry controller so I can learn both production and mixing/DJ stuff.
Very informative Chris thanx for the heads up
you can record your set on the djm350? thats insane. why doesn't the 900 do this? dang
uhm.. the Pioneer DDJ-SX only has for channel mixing, the middle fader is for the samples on Seratp DJ :/
I don't see how 2 CDJ-350s and a DJM-350 is 900-1100 bucks?
One CDJ-350 alone will run around 600, and the DJM-350 another 600. So that's around 1800 bucks, unless I'm missing something?
Where do you get those so cheap?
Ya I was wondering the same thing
whats your opinion on mixxx I have to dj for my new job and get learning quick also need my own set up
Hi, I'm new to Dj stuff and i'm wondering whether XDJ-R1 might fit or not.. I have made some tracks and i have logic pro x. I don't want just a controller.. should be able to get track via a USB pen and edit them on the DJ machine.. will XDJ-R1 do that for me?
Thanks! You helped me figure out my first set up for my budget and musical style! It would have been too much crap to wade through otherwise.
i am looking to get my start with DJing exclusively in hiphop. I have 2 questions:
1) why do you say hiphop DJs probably want to use exclusively real turn tables?
Dude whats your review about Pioneer XDJ 1000 And Pioneer DJM 850
new follower, you're awesome! btw the tempo video was very helpful. :)
should i wait with buying two cdj 2000 nexus and a djm 900 nexus? i'm asking because i don't want pioneer to release a new generation of cdjs in the next month and me having spent 5k. so do you think they'll release anything in the near future?

You gotta practice.. Rehearsals & be good at it.. Cheer's.. Doc in Surfers Paradise, Qld..Downunder..Australia.. 😎🎸🎤🔊🎩🌞

Great mantra for a beginner like me "Its not the hardware or software that makes a GREAT DJ its his/her creativity and HARD WORK.
Thank You Very very Much
thx for the advice.

Very good. Thank you!
