if you watch all the games they played, marcus is the one less consistent than kevin. im not saying marcus is bad but just the fact that he is not as consistent and stable as ppl said.

Without Marcus' composure, Kevin can't change his racket during set peacefully.
According to their coaches at youth academy, the thing that bonded Kevin and Marcus is their confidence and competitiveness. Kevin sometimes found crying when he got defeated in youth tournaments, and Marcus rebelled against Indonesia's badminton association and abruptly left the training center when he was not sent to All England tournament. Both guys have extreme response towards being not the number one. I think that explains why Kevin can have so much freedom at the net, because he believes there is a guy with an equal resoluteness, securing the back court. Marcus is a guy you want to go to a hell with.
Well-said, can’t agree more. Kevin was “denied” being a single player. Maybe the life lessons have taught them how to be tough, how to appreciate opportunities. They’re so determined to prove they’re the best. Amazing.

Kevin is a great player especially in front of the net, but without Marcus who always get ready to cover at the back this Team will not come out as good as now. People keep talking about Kevin, but without Marcus, he will not shine as bright as now. Just see when he got pair with Berry a couple of months ago, they lost in the semifinal and make their club (PB Djarum) failed to become a defending champions in Indonesia's National Tournament.
People need to stop comparing this two especially those amateur fans on Instagram.
They are both great in their own position. Kevin in the Front and Marcus at the Back. They are just meant to be together, and as an Indonesian my self, I feel so proud to have this two amazing man who never stop make us proud with their achievement. Good luck always for you two.

It's confusing to see so many comments saying the title should be "beside" not "behind". I'm sure the uploader didn't mean to compare the duo and say that Marcus is behind Kevin in terms of skill or whatever, but instead Marcus as a figure "behind" Kevin, the one who give his all to support whoever in front, the one who compliment Kevin's playstyle, to give him more assurance to do whatever he needs to do to get the point knowing that Marcus got his back, I think that's the meaning of the title.

When Kevin made so many unforced errors people barely noticed that this man coverd up all his mistakes, but when it happened the other way around and Kevin can't covered it up people blamed him and start to compare their skill and ended up saying look up to Kevin and learn more 😭

well kevin was paired with marcus when he was only 19, and even then he still very raw. since 2015 he's only changing partner once (when gideon was injured in 2016) when he played with wahyu nayaka and they actually won the indonesia masters in 2016.

@@langsz kevin has been paired with many partners but the coaches think they are not suitable (eventho kevin and their parners won several title), he always has to change his partner due to his partner injury/sick (like last partner before he got paired to marcus is stevanus gabriel which is got sick).
He never be able to get many rank point because of changing partners, but with marcus slowly but sure the coach think they are suit to each other (eventho they really have different personalities, thats why they never sit on bus to each other like friends).
Kevin is good enough, if you watch closely you can see that his ay of gripping the racket (and change the direction in flash is one and only-last player i've ever seen do that only the legendary sigit), but still without Marcus will be hard to be number one, maybe just on top, but not really dominating.
I like this video. Kevin wouldn't be where he is today if it wasn't for Marcus. Decent at the net, good defense, great attacks... Overall a solid all around player for Kevin to rely on. Whenever Kevin goes for his risky shots and it gets countered, Marcus is there to cover, definitely the strong hand in the dark. Also his intensity is nice to see, just focus on the game and almost never gets roped into Kevin's showboating/drama

@@langsz oh I would definitely agree that he has improved, they're young players I would hope that they improve. But there's also a reason why their favourite formation has Marcus in the back. Same with cai/Fu, Zhang/Fu, LYD and all his partners, etc... Some players are just naturally better at the net. One could argue that playing net is a lot harder than playing back court. It requires more focus, faster reaction, better overall view of the game to place the shot and force the lift or win the point.
It's just my opinion so I'm not at all trying to downplay his skills. Marcus can definitely score winners at the net, but his comfort zone is near the base line

Love this video very much. I do not know the technique in doubles but seeing both them playing there has been always a sense of satisfaction, assurance and stability; just different from others. Kevin might be the flamboyant heartthrob to the audience but Marcus is definitely the strong backbone that support their explosive play. Guess I am lucky being able to witness living legends like them in my life. Wish them the very best in many years to come.

I wouldn't say his defense is unbelievable, it's still a bit inconsistent...sometimes is good sometimes the quality is not good. his front court play though clearly has improved so much.

it's good, but I watch them almost every game...and gotta say his defense is still a bit inconsistent. one time he can play great defensive shot like that, but on the other time his defensive quality is pretty poor that it just the matter of time before the opponent kills it.
Interesting how they have different personalities, different circle of friends, but they're bonded by the same competitiveness and vision. After all, you don't have to be bestfriend off-court to be the best pair on court.
When kevin made so much errors marcus always covered him and thats why they are being the world number one until now. They are has been paired with a great skills and a big motivation to be champion. Kevin never blamed marcus when he makes mistake and also marcus, he never got angry when kevin tried to give him an advise on court. Its just not about being a champion but how they can respect each others and how they can defeat theirs ego. They can’t be compared!
Finally there is a video about this great man, Marcus. People usually talked about kevin but forgot about this strong man who always covered the court and helped kevin build great attacks. Great defenses and much more skills that makes minions became world number 1 MD. No need to compare both of them

In court they have chemistry each other, but the funny thing is they have very different social life off court. You will never see them hang out together. i must say Gideon is most complete player in MD atm. he can play anywhere on the court. and his defensive shot gesture is very unique (sometimes very bizarre), forehand defense with backhand grip while crouching.

Marcus is a versatile player. Explosive and stable at the back, confidence at the front court. Same thing happens with Ahsan. That's why both pairs are brilliant in MD. Versatility is a must in modern MD.

This is exactly my opinion. Its a rare case for back player to get spotlight since they are the one who did the attack and the front player did the execution. Thats why front player always get more spotlight
People who really "watch" badminton will understand this. Kevin has free role to be aggressive at front, while Gideon has to do the dirty work, covering all the miscalculation that Kevin did.

Marcus is the shadow of Kevin just like Jung Jae Sung was the shadow of Lee Yong Dae. He was so talented. He was the mentally strong one and was always the one to tough it out when it was crucial. He was just so talented in the game of badminton. Both Marcus and JJS are very underrated and lived under their partners shadow for some reason. It’s sad a lot of people don’t recognize that’s.

Both of them made a perfect couple. They know each other inside out and they just are a joy to watch on the court. Kevin is mainly strong at the net and marcus has more the smash power, but still both of them are a perfect team and I expect even greater results from them.

people who dispute the title of the word "behind" should be "beside" are just people who don't understand about playing badminton, they don't understand that the word "behind" is not for comparison, but because he is back court Player..
the only reason why Kevin got so much freedom at court is because of this guy. He covers a lot when Kevin take a risky move, trust me Kevin do a lot of risky move and marcus always try his hardest to keep the shuttle play. People who knows badminton surely understand the importance of Marcus, not a lot of player could keep up with Kevin movement. When he is on top of his form, this pair is almost impossible to stop.

people are too focus on KEVIN. for me personally, MARCUS is the man, without marcus, minions wont be this superior. Marcus is the man who always try to break in the opponent's defense and the one who create chances to a point. he has that tremendous power and give the opponents hard time to give it back, and kevin is always there to finish it. Recently, on 25th Jan, Indonesian Master 2019, on QF against Fajar Alfian - Muhammad Ardianto, on game 3 (set 3) at 19-18 for minions lead, you can see how well marcus' defend.
