- At long last all of those silly different races have been removed and finally DnD has become truly Diverse! As Wizards of The Coast continue their woke crusade to drive every last fragment of fantasy from their fantasy setting... And in the name of those whose very profession it is to find something to be offended at... This is why we gatekeep because these individuals are quite literally financially incentivized to ruin your hobby

I don’t need a lesson on race by hacks that think orcs are black stereotypes.
And some japanese (like Hayao Miyazaki from Ghibli) even think theyre actually asian stereotypes.
So yeah, people can think of orcs as any and all stereotypes. I bet some fat people will say Orcs are fat stereotypes...

They’ll remove classes and levels next.
And after that they’ll remove combat entirely. Instead, you talk to the monsters and help them through their childhood trauma.
Either they'll go full on that way, or they will turn the game into a very simplistic turned base WoW where every spells and abilities is ultra basic, probably card based or something.

This reminds me of some 4chan green text I read awhile back about a guy running a campaign.
TL/DR is his players wanted to know if the kingdom allowed ghey “marriage”. When he said no, the players took it upon themselves to “liberate” the kingdom from the “tyranny” of its king.
He let them run the adventure of fomenting a rebellion and building a new democracy, then at the apex of the players victory he dropped the bomb of the evil lich they should’ve been fighting completing his evil spell thus ushering in an era of darkness and fear.
That's the perfect way to go about this, he's a proper master.
I remember that one. Wasn’t it one girl who went nits over it, with the Lich (admittedly can’t remember if it was a Lich or not, but seems about right) winning just as ghey ”marriage” was about to be declared legal?
Brilliant move on the DM’s part, the monster isn’t going to put his machinations on hold just because some berk thinks forcing modern politics takes priority over saving the world.
That is the most Aesop thing I've ever seen in a modern context. Love it.
Fighting lich lords with rainbows. Sounds like a fun time tbh.
Easier route; it's just part of their culture to see it as alien and/or taboo and most never even give it half the time of day because homosexuality in their society is naturally low, if not extremely low, and spending valuable resources to babysit this idea would put them at risk from other rival cultures and kingdoms which don't care either.

I like the term "race" because it seems fittingly anachronistic. "Species" feels too modern for a fantasy setting.
Precisely
"Species" is mostly an academic word. You don't often hear people today using that word, let alone in a setting where most people aren't educated.
But again, they want to have their cake and eat it. They want different races but don't want them to be fundamentally different.
I would say "clinical" more so than modern. It would fit more in a sci fi setting. Honestly I have no problem with the terms "lineage" or "ancestry" but the system they've gone with for One D&D is silly, as is the baffling cultural trappings they've dressed the races from prior editions in.
@@CrizzyEyesDC 20 uses ancestry and you can be any race or combo of race/ancestry you want.(They each have their own pros and cons. You can be a half gnome half orc if you want and gain some benefits from each ancestry
A good point as to why I'm no fan of the change.
the battle to remove words will continue unabated. The word "race" in fantasy has always meant "species" and never had negative connotations in itself.
"We celebrate diversity, but we'll ban you if you use words that imply anyone is different from anyone else!"
It's humanity's fault not being able to speak clearly about anything related to themselves. We are almost subspecies of a singular species, but we never completely separated enough to go fully in that direction. There has been no geographic barrier that completely cuts off groups from interbreeding with each other which pretty much creates subspecies in others.
@@rh906 Please don't lump us all together in that statement "It's humanities fault not being able to speak clearly about anything related to themselves." because you seem to be able to communicate pretty well and so do many people. Subspecies is another word for race.
We can thank the morally bankrupt intersectionality for this. When no racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic is found, invent one and claim that this new meaning was intentional
I liked how R.A.Salvatore had the elves and humans push dwarves to make peace with orcs and let them have a kingdom on their doorstep only for it to fail repeatedly and lead to more wars.
I really liked the Orcs Storyarc. A Chieftain blessed by Gruumsh, gains superior strength, agility and wisdom. Forging a Kingdom on mostly barren Mountains, by forcing the other kingdoms into a Peace-Treaty. After hundreds of years of "mostly" peaceful co-existence and Trade, the Orc Numbers swell into the hundreds of thousands, eventually forming an Army that lays waste to Sundabar and Nesme.

In Morrowind male characters get more strength while women get more personality, orcs and redguard have lower intellligence stats but more strength and are worse than magic, elves have the highest intelligence and are stronger than magic. The high elves are more capable with magic and do more damage but also take more damage, dark elves are resistant to fire and since most of morrowind is dark elves, fire is overall ineffective.
Race was very important in morrowind, they even called you out by your race and the game looked nothing like real life ,it was like you were on a different planet, the beast races meaning argonians and khajit were often slaves and could not wear boots and gloves and face covering helmets they even have reverse joints and were better at sneaking and jumping and swimming, the khajit had catfall so they dont take damage from falling from small heights and argonians have water breathing.

Starwars Galaxies had racial differences as well. Wookiees couldn’t wear most clothing and armor unless it was specifically tailored to them, Trandoshans couldn’t wear most gloves and footwear, and the Empire would give you less faction points if you were non human.
It was also tied into the narrative very closely. One of the most infamous quests involves you escorting a Khajit slave to a house in Balmora, only for the pompous noble to attempt to kill the slave when you arrive, because her only purpose was carrying narcotics in her gut. ”diversity” meant I had to read a horrific news report about two teens of the same ethnicity throw down and curbstomp another teen of a different ethnicity during a literal middle school basketball game.
Saw that video recently. To be fair that was just one of the players that was at fault. The first two players were just going for the ball, and maybe a foul was involved. It was the third player that came in that crossed way too many lines and probably should get charged for assault if they haven't already. But the other player that was on his team didn't cross that line, although I do think they would have gotten a foul called on them, but that isn't that unusual in basketball when a player thinks they have a chance to get the ball.
Don't buy fourth or fifth edition D&D. By 3.5 and earlier. Don't buy your books from anybody but independent sellers that don't give their money to wizards of the Coast or anybody associated with them.
4th is fine.
the first iterations of 5e are just fine. but I have been making an effort to learn other systems too, nothing wrong with expanding your options.

Actually given that in D&D 5e all the races can interbreed, they are in fact races. Because half-elves and half-orcs exist. Which they don't anymore in whatever amalgam of political correctness the next not quite 6th edition of D&D will be. here's another point
People don't say "I play a mage of elven race"
They say "I play an elven mage"

It can depend on how you phrase it, and when being fancy, people might say things like that.
How dare you! You forgot his pronounce!

"Sire, we've been having increased problems with the tribes of feral [Communists] lately."
Nowadays, you don't even need to take an oath to a God to be a Paladin or Cleric. Still need to be beholden to a demon to he a warlock for some reason.
@@MaverickhunterXZero You do.
Well at least 5e still specifies god(s are/)is just as important as oath and clerics explicitly follow or are fueled by a specific deity whose philosophy aligns the closest.
Both also explicitly call upon divine powers.
Warlocks tho haven't been specifically demons in any edition, be it as the title+UA of AD&D or their proper 3e class form, just someone whose soul is suffesed by energy of a pact with a powerful supernatural entity. Devils were the most common due to hellfire warlock PRC and it being the sample character of the warlock class description, but even then it specified: " Warlocks are not half-fiends or tieflings by default (although many creatures of those kinds become some of the most powerful and terrifying representatives of the class). The mark that the supernatural powers leave on their servants is often a mark in the soul, not the flesh. In fact, many warlocks are created by nonevil powers - wild or fey forces that can be every bit as dangerous as demons or devils." (wild here referencing the essentia/incarnum and wildmagic options, while fey is... well self explanatory)
I really despise that as I can't really get how he oaths work if hey are not backed by a Deity. And how falling to keep it makes you stronger. I understand a class made when a Paladin was corrupted and joined a demon/devil, but that is no longer a Paladin.
@@dancorneanu9144 Its just SJW illiteracy.
"as it does from a god." - Gods still fuel paladins. Its just that mere faith only results in a cleric, while cleric + code of conduct (aka oath) is the paladin.

As a scientifically minded person. I've always found race to be a very interesting term. If we went by the usual scientific classifications that we apply to all other animals. We'd all be subspecies. But it would be too clinical and impolitik to suggest were different species. We dont say a lion and a cheetah are the same race. They're both from the cat family, but not the same species. There's barely a difference between brown trout and rainbow trout, aside from some coloring. But again, we dont say they're the same thing.
"They [non-humans] were lesser beings."
The Drow would heavily object to this.
Wait till they learn how the dragons and mindflayers would take that news.
Race is an integral part of DND and it's lore and world building, as it is with most anything. What I crumble after they attempt to do this only to immediately go back on it in damage control when it immediately flops.
And here I was thinking 5e was as bad as it would get.... How wrong I was
Technically this is a new edition, One D&D they're calling it. Like every other attempt to create a final live service version of a product (cough Windows cough) I imagine they will abandon that idea within a couple of years and call this 6e or the next edition 7e.

it's times like this I'm glad there are alternatives. My orc character is proud they are an ork and hates humans for always destroying their settlements and I wouldn't have it any other way. In the new setting, he would have to hate the people who constantly attacked his people based on the colour of their skin because it's the only distinguishing trait. Eliminating race-based alignment invalidates that he overcame his nature to fight alongside a human, a dwarf and an elf to protect more than just his tribe. The more I hear about this the more it would destroy my decade-old character.
If players view non-human races in fantasy RPGs as inferior, why don't so many of them play humans? According to the "logical" conclusion of the authors in this journalistic masterpiece, everyone should only want to play humans.

Good of D&D to make me cherish even more my 3.5 edition rulebooks... what's next, no dice rules, just decide if you succeed?
A change I would like to see is keep the other races as they were in 3.5 but make humans more diverse. For example, a human from a fishing community gets a +2 to sailing, fishing, nature, and survival checks. Diversity of community is a big thing in fantasy humans. That's what makes humans different than everyone else. I'd like it to show that.
Yeah, pathfinder is woke as well.
I remember an interview where one of the creators commented on a Thasalonian Rune Lord of Lust, who was a woman dressed in skimpy mage robes. He said that they will re-design her to be more "conservative" and if they could go back in time they would make her a man to """subvert expectations"""
Always was, pathfinder was the de facto containment system to keep these types arguing online and out of the game table.
Pathfinder wasn't always woke. That only truly began with 2nd edition, which is why I've been playing 1st edition for 10 years.
3:27 Yeah... you should tell that to the good folks in England/Ireland, or Sweden if you need an example closer to you.
Race in D&D always seemed the opposite of "racist" to me.
All humans were humans, didn't matter what color or ethnicity, then there were Elves, Dwarves, etc.
Or Am I wrong?
Most of my D&D exposure was through CRPG games.
The "balance" of race is ok IE getting (+2 and +1 ) and a feat.
The problem is REMOVING THE SLOW SPEED from small races. You remove the flavour and the quirkyness.
And Halfling STILL get lucky. It's worth running 5 feet less.
To me it never made sense that they were slower from a design standpoint.
People want to play iconoclastic characters without being gimped for no reason.
Fantasy is full with Characters that fight the preconceived notions of society.
The wizard orc, the halfling barbarian, etc.
Playing iconoclastic characters is extremely common. It sucks that you are arbitrarily worse at a thing. This makes playing your fun character objectively worse and pushes people from the game.
the success of 5e and pf2e shows that people dislike the arbitrary stopping blocks that were placed on small characters.

The species may just be listed as "humanoid" and the sub-species listed as "human," "elf," etc. Whereas with dogs, all domestic dogs are the same sub-species, separate from wolves. Thus dog breeds (which are not categorized scientifically) would be a dog's race.
So because all humanoids can inter-breed, they are the same species. We can then replace, "race" with, "sub species," or we can leave it TF alone and call it "race," or be comical and call it "breed" because talking about elves and orcs in a scientific vein is, in the end, comical.
In many latin-derived languages, breed and race are the same word. So it's normal to say "race of dog/horse/cat" when referring to a breed.
Technically speaking, human "races" are just breeds. It's a group of individuals of the same species that shares similar appearences
Most humanoids cant interbreed in the bulk of settings.
Humans can by literally divinely superior blood if the 3e book of races and some old FR lore is to be followed (same reason why Dragons can fuck the "bad dragon" into any womb).
But orcs and elves dont make viable offsprint if any at all, same for elves and dwarves. Lizardfolk outright cant do it with almost any humanoid.
Yuan-ti breed true among themselves, but are in bulk transformed other humanoids. Same thing for Dragonborn (and Dragonspawn for the Chromatics) but became a true race by regular old evolution.
Race is still the right term because IT ARE FUCKING FANTASY RACES.
@@ANDELE3025 I still recall the explanation I had for that in a setting I put together for my group. Humans were the base template for a humanoid that the gods built on, left alone until the deity of civilization said "Alright, I'm gonna make my own." and then realized that versatile potential is dope and so didn't ''finish' humanity before unleashing them upon the world. Dragons pull the same because their gods went out of their way to enable it.

@@Geostelar4920 No, I checked out when they started taking out anything "offensive" from their current edition lore, decided to slapdash try to fix "issues" with the cultural and biological aspects of player races which led them to deciding that ASI's weren't biological all of a sudden despite all their pre-2019 5e material stating that to be the case.
The orc having better intelligence was already solved by them picking the highest number they got from rolling stats, pretending that their natural bonus to strength can be altered by reading books is stupid.
Wow diversity...in one of the most diverse games ever made in the history of man kind. It's about time.
Let's say this. Calling elves, for example, by "race" making them akin to you by intelligence. But when you call them by "species" then you putting them further from you, to the level of animals that doesn't have much similar to you.

With every passing day I slowly agree more with a certain political party from 1930 Germany, after all why did all of that start again?
What is interesting with the "species" change is that they no longer allow half-breeds. The word species implies that they are able to interbreed with each other. The word race does not imply that they are able to.
So what is up with that WotC?
This is how Shadowrun deals with Metahumanity. A human and a dwarf can give birth to either. There's just social stigma.
Actually it's worse than that because you've got it backwards. Scientifically, members of a different species cannot reproduce if memory serves me. What they've done is imply that you can't have children with elves, orcs, dwarves, etc.
Isn't it the other way around? Cats and dogs are different species and can't cross-breed, poodles and labradors are different races of the same species and can breed together.
