I just wanted to give a shout out to the comments section, Shoestring has to have one of the most supportive communities of people I've come across on the internet. Thank you guys for having so much class and respect.
The best things in life are free and I'm not just talking about blue skies and green mountains and fresh air-- I'm talking about your videos, Shoestring. They're the best things in life and they're free. Thank you. I share your videos because that's the least I can do and I believe in supporting American artists.
I Want to say something out loud, Mark you do such a great job telling stories and your wealth of knowledge about rail transportation is incredible. My grandfather was an engineer for 40 years. Every night I fall asleep watching these videos, listening to the narration and the trains rolling down the way. Thank you for the countless hours of great content.
Shoestring you make the most restful videos. After a long week of trucking it’s good to hear your stories and yard walks. They help me calm down to get some sleep. It’s a compliment. If I pass out I finish the video later.
please try to address health problems, stick around as long as you can. the world needs all the people like you it can get. thanks for making such relaxing and enjoyable videos.
I'd like to add, that you're stories are kid safe as well...lol. Modern day Huck Finn. Whenever my grandsons are here, they get some insight of your travels. Stay safe ol' boy. As was said by RuberbandMan...the world needs more people like you.
Hobo, I'm worried about your health! Why don't you just get your ass up to Minnesota and go to the Mayo clinic? Only the best medical care for the best hobo
What a beautiful lady! Hope her eggs hatch well! Awesome the conductor talked to you. Praying for you Shoestring. It’s going to be different seeing the buildings being torn down.
Any day in South Texas on an aircraft ramps Air Force bases one could find one or two eggs at the four-way corners on the active parking concrete sections. Those poor birds probable didn't see too many of their egg hatchling reach flight status.
Mark, I will keep praying for you every night here in Albuquerque! The world needs MORE people like you and so please stay healthy for many many years to come! Take care and God bless you on your train and health journeys in life.
What a beautiful bird, both in appearance and her chirp. Hate to say it, but there won't be another like Shoestring; the mold was broken after he came into being. RIP Shoestring. 😔😪🚂
Hello Shoestring from Willoughby ,Ohio ! Good to see you out & about, good video, will be good when you'll be riding again !! You have so much knowledge & info that can't be found in a book. Please stay well & always safe !! Prayers & Blessings !!
Sat here feeling sorry for myself this morning after spending four hours in A and E having a bandsaw cut stitched up and I found your latest video so this will definitely take my mind off the pain for a while and it’s a LONG one, great! Good to see ya out and about! Praying for Gods guidance with your surgery Shoestring..Thanks for another great video; take care of yourself, and thank your freind for us for helping you!!🙏
Hey Mark, happy to have another video. You sound like you’re doing better. I was looking for something to watch tonight and a 50 minute Shoestring video punched the ticket!
Good video Mr. Shoestring! Sure is a shame to see the Erwin yard being dismantled. It's been about 8 years since I was over there. Always enjoyed chasing from there back to Altapass and watching trains at the NS and CSX crossover. Stay safe and thanks again!
Awesome video Shoestring! Lots of action going on down your way! Thanks for sharing it with us! Prayers for you on your health, Vanderbilt is a great hospital, they took care of my sister in law there and my brother in law had his bypass heart surgery there. My wife had her 2nd foot surgery there and they did a great job.

That bird knows from your vibes and the genuinely great person you are that you are not a threat to her ! I’ve been watching pretty much all your videos recently and I think you are fantastic ! Ziggy.. Yorkshire England!
Hi Shoestring! Great to see you. That bird was something I’ve never seen before. It was really pretty. You’re looking and sound great. Here’s to your health & thank you for your video.
The Killdeer bird is a large plover found in the Americas. It was described and given it's current scientific name in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. Both parents incubate the eggs for 22-28 days. The young stay in the nest until the day after being hatched, when they are led to a feeding territory where the chicks will feed themselves. (Wikipedia, I had to look it up!) Looking good shoestring that brid was beautiful good to see you though we never met watching your videos I think of you as a friend wish you nothing but the best stay healthy and thank you for the great videos your in my thoughts and prayers
Welcome back SHOESTRING! Glad to see you back doing a video. Great video of the railyard but sad to see it going away. If a man wanted some souvenirs like spikes and rail plates that'd be the place to go! Was interesting to see the various types of MOW equipment and I'm like you "Bet each piece was a pretty penny". Hope you're doing well and I'm sure you're ready to ride again. Be safe and take care of yourself! Thanks again for sharing another great video with us and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers til the next time! The state of Delaware admires you SHOESTRING!
Ya can shure tell its spring when the Killdeers are in the yard. thanx for the tour of Irwin Shoestring! I hope things go well for ya with the doc. Stay safe/Prayers!
Hi Mark ! Love your adventures very much !!! Stay Happy and Well ! We pray for you often.. For Safety and Happiness wellness... Keep the awesome videos coming in.. Love them !
Excellent video. Amazing how much the railroads change and abandon terminals or yards. That's why I always say, grab the videos and pictures while you can. Because no guarantee the locomotives you see or the hot spots you visit will be around in ten years.
Mark I could listen to you for hours. I often preform complex tasks to your narration. You remind me of Dick Proeneke, and sorry to him for misspelling…….be safe.
It’s nice that the employees respect you for what you do. You educate a lot of people on rail and few do it. I will have you in my prayers for your medical issues. Your friend just down the rails.
A lot of times the Killdeer will run away from its nest if you get too close and pretend it has a broken wing in an attempt to divert your attention away from the nest. Then when you follow it long enough it flies away with its “ broken” wing.
Yup, I’ve witnessed that myself while I was a maintenance worker at a Provincial park. I was amazed at its intelligence when I figured out what it was doing.
The snake you chucked probably wanted a friend to curl up with you....lol. j/k. You are well knowledgeable and you taught me some things about trains. Keep up the good job. Thanks.
Thanks for posting your travels Shoestring. I can watch trains all day. I was always watching the RR cams when I stumbled across your channel. I used to hop trains from Victorville to San Bernardino in the early 70's. It was a fun and easy ride down the Cajon pass, but I was too green to know how hard is hard to catch a ride back because they have a hard pull up the mountain pass so they put massive power to make it up the grade and they were going just a bit too fast to grab onto. I finally got caught by a bull and they called my parents who had to come and fetch me from Santa Fe detention. I was only 14, so probably for the best.
Good to see you out and about. It's been a rough week for me so this video is just what I needed to bring my spirits up. It's a shame that they are tearing out the Erwin yard but I understand if it's no longer being used the railroad will tear down the buildings and take up the rails so they don't have to pay so much taxes on unused buildings etc.. Sure would be awesome if the could repurpose that crew hotel building. I thought it was awesome that the railroad employee recognized you and didn't give you any trouble. I know that sometimes you wish that you weren't recognized so often but it just proves that when people do recognize you that they give you the honor and respect that you deserve I can't believe that the Killdeer let you get so close. I think she sensed that you are a good person and meant her no harm. I hate to hear that you are getting the runaround on having your medical procedure performed. I'll be praying that Vanderbilt will do it for you. Can't understand why no one wants to do it. It upsets me that you aren't getting the treatment that you need and deserve. So many military veterans are treated like 💩 and it's not right. Thank you for the stories and making me laugh. I feel better. Your videos always brighten my day. 🙂 I'm sending a multitude of prayers your way that you will be able to get the medical treatments you need and that your health will quickly return 100% and you will soon be out on the rails doing what you love and sharing your journeys with us. Take care friend. God bless. Much love and respect 🙏❤
I have been following your video's for 6 months. I really enjoy your knowledge of the railroad industry and your traveling adventures. Wish you the best!
Well, respect to them for finally leveling with you. Now you have a chance to solve the problem, now that you know what the obstacle is. I would have asked them "why", though! Always get as much info as you can. It can come in handy later.
Alright Shoestring great to see and hear you my guy! Always love seeing your videos. God Bless, and always continue being safe! See ya on the Hi Iron!!!
Shoestring you always deliver, I am entertained, interested, and have a little more knowledge when your videos are done. Thank you for sharing sir, Happy Rails to you.
Larry Lawton is awesome! He started out as a regular jewel thief but progressed into a jewelry store robber as well as a doesn't other things, all on behalf of the mob. He made damn good money, and made a killing for the mob bosses, no pun intended. Lol. Anyway, he's an incredibly smart man, with tons of stories to tell and a lot of really good advice. He actually will travel around the us as a motivational speaker, talking to teenagers and even other prisoners about going straight and getting out of crime business. He has a real strong impact on a lot of people, and it's very obvious that he genuinely cares about the people he talks to and tries to help. Also, like shoe string mentioned, he spent a ridiculous amount of time going through and reading every law book he could get his hands on while in prison. He also does prison cooking episodes on his channel, where he'll make stuff they would make in prison with very few ingredients. I'll tell you what, those guys are ingenious and very resourceful because some of the things they use and put together to create the things we take for granted on a daily basis, like pizza crust and other things like that, is a kind of amazing. Super interesting and some of the food looks pretty good actually. But, I wholeheartedly agree that if folks haven't seen or watched any of his videos yet, they should definitely go and find his channel because besides the things I've already mentioned, he's also a very interesting guy and a great storyteller as well.
I am a retired probation/parole officer and I used to take ex-cons to the lockups to talk with the young criminals about changing their ways. Of course, I could give the same advice, but the young crims never wanted to hear advice from "the man." Long story short, new management was/is under the impression that only "professional therapists" can motivate crims to get their lives straightened out.
So much is changing, and railroads are not being forgotten. Thanks again for a interesting and informative video. Stay on top of your health issue. Become the squeaky wheel!
I counted like close to 200. Shoestring my prayers go out to you. You do what you have to stay in health on your end, on our end we'll keep praying for you👍

Hope to see you around Montana sometime! Since I found your channel I haven’t been so annoyed with the railroad crossing near my work that stops traffic during lunch everyday. Now I just hope to spot you going by.
Another montanan here. I agree. And the weather is finally warming up. Id love to see his adventure up the bozeman pass like he mentioned he has done previously.
Hi there Mark! Now you got me craving cinnamon twists!!!! I hope all goes well with your health. Love watching your vids....p.s. loved that mama bird giving you the what for lol...dont come near my egglets!
I've been watching Larry Lawton for over a year now and have read his book. Very interesting and his channel has a lot of good info and advice. I get a sad feeling about tearing down old buildings that showcase the older architect designs. It's a bit like history being erased.
Hey Shoestring, it's always good to see a video from ya! A couple ideas of places for you to get some help with your surgery is OSF Saint Francis in Peoria Illinois, this place is top notch! Another idea is Southern Illinois University, they have offices all over the state. Take care.
Dear shoestring,ur looking well and good, and so glad to see you enjoying urself.Everytime I watch a video I learn something new from you! That bird was a beauty,I never saw a bird look like that with stripes,to bad she didn't know what a kind and loving soul u are!! Will be keeping u in my prayers and all ur u tubers who love u!! Stay well, enjoy urself and,as always godspeed
Great video mark don't know if you have ever ridden the Norfolk southern line across southern indiana but you should check out Duncan hill tunnel I believe it's the second steepest grade in the country I could be wrong but worth checking out good luck God be with you your videos are very entertaining keep up the good work!
Ive only been acquainted with this channel but for a couple of days and i got'a say, man am i captivated by these video's. We live in a country that has gone ass-backwards. Not to say we were so so-called 'Great' to begin with, and our morals were almost always based on what was in out pockets. But here is a guy, so humble so knowledgeable so gritty and down to earth, ya gota love him. Hell, we tend to forget what real men are like and all about. He is a survivor, a man driven to basic goals one train ride at a time. And he has something about him that we better all take note. Cause real soon the ways things are going not just our nation but world wide, this wave of spoiled insanity will surely see to some real hard times that people wont be strong enough to cope with. Better start learning the value of things. basic knowledge. basic living, tools for survival, cause im telling you, its coming.. come real hard times that people are simply not going to be able to cope with.
Nice to see the crews recognize you and don’t give you a hard time.

Take care.
Great video but it's sad. I'm the 4th generation of railroad men in my family to work at Erwin and now they just tear it down. It's a sad shame.
I like watching Larry Lawton. Cool stories!

Always excellent work done ✅✅✅
Wow little dark.... But ya this circus ends someday
