Just to put some clarity, there are many branches of Iaido. I have been in the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu branch for a little under nine years, and in my experience, all branched have different ways of wearing the sageo, where thumb placement is on the tsuba, nukitsuke (opening cut), noto (placing katana back into saya), and several other small but noticable differences. If someone is doing different from what you see in this video or thinks that he is doing it wrong, every style has a reason for why they do it and it is what their branched lineage has passed down through hundreds of years of change.

That’s illegal. In Japan katanas are highly regulated in both ownership and manufacturing.

If it is a katana that doesn't uses Tamahagane steel it can't be considered as such and make it illegal in Japan.
Sometimes, the "your sword isn't drippy enough, go to jail" comes true. If a katana isn't beautiful enough it might be confiscated

It needs to complete some requirements to be considered a Katana. as material of the blade, the hamon and how it was crafted among (us) other requirements.
If the katana isn't "Drippy" enough or it was made with other kind of steel it is considered illegal

The maturity it takes to say "this type of blade is rad but I'd rather wait till I'm older" shows you have a common ground of respect with swords that most swordsman do possess after a decent amount of training, words are words so let your actions decide your fate young one. Just be careful and take your time, don't forget that purchasing a dull blade is also still OK! I got a display katana as my first practice sword and it was a real doozy but I got certain skills from it I wouldn't know otherwise!

@@Ian-es3ec smart move!! I myself train with reinforced foam blades, they get the job done flawlessly and you can usually hit on contact if you and your sparring partner both have good training armor!!

Hi i really want to learn how to use a katana but I have no idea what katana I should buy, i’m a newbie and there’s so much stuff like iron, carbon steel, full tang, battle ready. I have never had a katana got any tips? And what starter katana should I buy?
If you want to learn, start by using a iaïto. It is build like a katana but the blade is not sharp. Next, buy a large obi belt (hakama and gi outfits are cool but not required if you do pratique indoor) and there is many videos for learning how to draw and swing the blade: it is called iaïdo, Shogo do some. Then you can go to a iaïdo club if you live in a big town.
There is plenty of iaïto, chinese or japanese, for your first don't buy a fancy one or a too much longer. For japanese swords tozando works very well (only way to have japanese sword without the price of a car), but other chinese makers do well, as hanwei swords of many others wich depend of your country. But not a sharp blade if you want to pratice, it is the better way to cut your fingers.

It is stored upward because the edge of the blade could not use the scabbard. If nou not using butter on the katana, there is no problem, the excedent oil could be removed by good care.

Today I learned that a katana can slip out of its sheath if you tilt it with the handle down. I always thought that the habaki held the blade in the sheath quite tightly. Thanks for dispelling my delusion.
