  • Learn how to make pretty much the easiest DIY skater skirt ever in this beginner sewing project!
    You'll learn how to measure and cut out a full circle skirt based on your waist measurement, how to make an elastic waistband, and how to hem the edges for a fully finished skirt. This is a great project for beginners who want to learn how to sew with stretch fabric, or anyone looking for a quick and easy sewing tutorial!
    *****
    MATERIALS NEEDED:
    -1 1/2 or more yards of stretch knit fabric (mine is 95% polyester, 5% spandex - that smooth spandex feel is perfect for the skirt)
    -Wide elastic for the waistband (big enough to fit around your waist) - you can get the elastic cut by the yard usually, mine is 2 1/8" wide but a 1 1/2 inch wide elastic would work well too
    -Paper for making the pattern
    -Ball point needle for sewing stretch fabric
    -Sewing machine, pins, tape measure, scissors, thread, etc.

    I just made my very first piece of clothing thanks to your awesome video! Thanks so much!! My only note is for big girls like myself or for those wanting a longer skirt, I didn't have enough fabric to fold twice to cut the full skirt in one piece like you did, so I folded the fabric once, lined up one side of my pattern to the folded edge and the waist side on the open side, and just made two halves. I sewed the seams together on each side and then I was able to follow along with the video from there.

    Thank goodness, you are the ONLY one that I have seen do this right. Mostly I see people measure the length and go from the corner, YOU have actually done it right, the length of the skirt goes from your waist line that you cut. Doing it the other way is a false measurement, beauase it's going to be cut off anyway. And I dont hear them say for instance 26 inches from the waist marking, they go 26 inches from the corner, which probably makes it more like 22 inches...

    As always, I love your tutorials!
    I have a suggestion based on past experience with stretch knits and the struggle I have gone through with the math. Any time I use the math, skirt comes out way too big.
    If you struggle with the math, I suggest either removing 1-2" from your measurement before dividing or start by cutting little bits out of the waist and trying it as you go.

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  6 лет назад +1

      Aw thank you so much, I really appreciate that!!! 😊 Do you mean a 1/2 circle skirt? If so, you would take the waist measurement and divide it by 3.14 (instead of 6.28) and that would give you the number you need! I actually have a tutorial for a half circle skirt too (called “DIY Easy Skater Skirt”). It doesn’t use an elastic waistband but you could easily use one just like in this video. And if I misunderstood and you didn’t mean a half circle skirt just let me know! Thanks so much for watching!! And your granddaughters are lucky to have you making special things for them!

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  7 лет назад

      +Sekar Ayu Thank you so much, I'm so glad you liked the tutorial! Unfortunately this project really needs a stretch fabric, I'm sorry! Because it's just using an elastic waistband with no zipper, the fabric must stretch to get the skirt on and off, otherwise you'd have to add a zipper in if you're using a non stretch fabric to be able to get it on and off.

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  7 лет назад +1

      +Lynette Patrice I'm so sorry for just seeing this comment - I was under the weather for a while and I'm just finally catching up on comments so I'm sorry for the delay!! If you can only fit 1/4 circle skirt onto your fabric at once you could cut out four of them and sew them together along each side to create a full circle skirt, but if you don't want so many seams then perhaps you could try a half circle skirt instead of a full circle skirt where you could cut two of the quarter circles out and then you would just sew them together and add the elastic waistband so there would only be a seam on each side... it wouldn't be as full as a full circle skirt but could be a good option if your fabric isn't large enough. The formula for a half circle skirt is different but I show you how to make one in my video for a DIY 2 piece skater dress which has a crop top & half circle skirt, so you could follow the skirt portion of that tutorial perhaps. I'm so sorry again for just getting the comment now so I'm sorry if you no longer need this advice, but I hope it helps some. Thank you so much for watching my channel and commenting, I really appreciate it! :)

    if I have fabric that has a pattern that shouldn't be flipped upside down, how do I fold it? do I need to cut it in half?

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  7 лет назад

      +Clockworkthings I haven't made a circle skirt with a pattern like that, but thinking through it in my head I believe it would work best to cut 2 half circles where the pattern is facing up the correct way on both pieces, rather than cutting one complete circle like I show, and then sew those 2 pieces together so that you create a whole circle. You will have a seam on each side of your circle skirt, but it should ensure that the front and back of the skirt have the pattern facing up on your skirt, rather than the back of the skirt being upside down, from what I'm thinking. I hope that works out for you!

  • @ccsyyheva02

    Do you have a bulge at the back where the elastic is sewed together onto the fabric?

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  7 лет назад

      +kristine schultz Hmm no I haven't had that problem. On any of the things I've made with a waistband like that I have sewn the two little flaps of elastic seam allowance down so they lay flat on the waistband and then the fabric just flows right over. Did you sew the little flaps down on the elastic? I've always used a thinner stretch fabric so I wonder, do you have a thicker fabric where the seam allowance where you sewed the skirt to the elastic could be causing it to bulge out a little? I hate to say I'm having trouble figuring out why that would happen on yours 😟 I'm sorry!!! I was just actually thinking also about the type of elastic... I've seen some super super thick elastics at the store and wonder if perhaps the elastic itself is too thick, the seam allowance where you sewed it together could be causing some extra thickness making the fabric bulge out. I am sorry if none of that actually helps or is relevant, I'm trying to brainstorm what could be happening... if I think of anything else I'll for sure let you know.

    Love your tutorial! Quick question, I made a circle skirt with an elastic waistband measured to my natural waist. When I put on the skirt I ripped it when pulling it over my hips :( any idea what I may have done wrong??

      Also, I did use a zig zag stitch.

      +Liz Weckmann Thank you so much for watching! I've been thinking about your question and I'm thinking that a possibility of why it ripped is perhaps the fabric wasn't stretchy enough? Of course with not seeing it myself that may be totally off base but when I make a skirt like this I have to have a really stretchy fabric for it to stretch around my wider areas and still fit comfortably around my waist, whereas if a fabric I'm working with isn't very stretchy I would need to put a zipper in to put it on, so perhaps if there wasn't quite enough give in the fabric that's why it ripped. Maybe you could try cutting the skirt waist wider than your natural waist so it can go around your hips and then sew the elastic on, stretching the elastic to match up to the waist as you sew - the wider waist may give more room for the skirt to stretch around you and then the elastic should then cinch the wider waist around your smaller natural waist and create a nice gathered effect once it's on. I'm so sorry if this isn't the answer or if it doesn't work the way I am imagining but I hope maybe that helped some! Thank you so much for watching and I really hope it works out!!

      +Comicat Creations thank you so much! I think you're right. I used a cotton fabric with no stretch. Thanks, again!

    great video! i was just wondering, would this method work work with stiffer fabrics that arent stretchy? i have a lot of fabric but all of it is cotton quilting fabric and id still love to make a skirt with it. zippers seem really hard!

      i suppose that would eliminate the stretching ability.... oh, what if i stretched the elastic all the way out as i sewed it, so that when i let go the elastic is normal but the fabric is bunched up?

      I am so sorry I somehow missed your comment!!! 🙁I know this might not help now but to make the skirt this way, you would need a stretch fabric... the only way I could think that you'd be able to make it without a zipper and with the cotton fabric would be if instead of measuring your waist to make the circle skirt, you could measure the widest part of your hips and add a couple of inches to give a little extra room so that you'd have the extra room to be able to get it on and off... then like you said, stretch the elastic so it lines up with the fabric and sew it, so once you're done sewing it will scrunch the waist in... I've never done this so I'm not sure if it would look right or not, though, so I can't guarantee how the fabric would lay being scrunched in but it may be an option... I also have a tutorial (it's only the second or third tutorial I ever made so not great instructions lol) where I used cotton fabric with a waistband where you don't need a zipper. It's not a circle skirt but it's a way to make a cotton skirt without a zipper! But I apologize in advance for the not great instructions! And also again I'm SO sorry for the delay in this response!!!

    Instead of using an elastic for the waistband, can i use extra fabric?

      +Katie X Yes I think that would work! I did a half circle skirt tutorial a few months ago where I used the fabric as the waistband and it worked great so I'm sure it would for this too :) If you have any problems with the waistband being too loose or not holding the skirt up well enough, you could either cut it a bit smaller than your waist so you have that tighter elastic like hold, or you could feed some elastic in through the waistband for extra security. But I do think the fabric should work well! 😃 Thanks for watching!
