    Simon has kindly checked what pickups are in his guitar (Mike’s actual Archtop) and he has found that the neck pickup is a Seymour Duncan Jazz and the bridge is the stock Archtop pickup! Mystery solved!
    It's been a minute since I last posted a video and that's because this video has consumed me! I have tweaked, tweaked and tweaked some more before landing on the video you see before you! Tom did a great job of providing me with a low output pickup, similar to the ones I suspect Mike was using during the Morning View era of Incubus.
    Let me know what you think of the pickup swap - does it get closer to the tones from this amazing era of the band?
    This is one very tiny piece of a complex puzzle that I'm working on getting everything together to show you guys exactly how to recreate the tones found on Morning View. I'm very excited about this next video!
    Enjoy my friends!

    This was really cool! I'm impressed by the difference in the first clip for the WYWH intro. Tom's pickup is extremely close, if not dead on. It is obviously hard to find the right words for it, but his pickup maintain the "honk" that is simply missing with the stock one (too much high end info) thank you for this and very much looking forward to the next one!

      Thanks so much Julien! You’re absolutely right about the ‘honk’ there’s a ton of it in Mike’s sound on Morning View and that’s the part of the sound that was driving me the most crazy and why it took me so long to put this video out 😅
      Thanks for watching!

    Great comparison! I think I like both pickups but having the low output seems necessary for Mike’s sound from MV. I’ve also never seen his hollowbody PRS in high res before so that was cool seeing it like that for the first time. I remember I asked a while back where his PRS guitars ended up and it looks like we know where one of them is now.

      Thanks Brett! I absolutely agree with you, the stock pickup is totally useable just not quite right for what I’m trying to achieve in this scenario.
      😁 It’s so cool isn’t it? I remember when I got Simon’s email, I stared at it for a good minute before what I was reading/seeing sank in! 😂

    Love love love this!
    To me, the new pickup creates more of his live tones he achieved around the time of the morning view release, which is so so awesome! Very informative, going to definitely use this to achieve some tones once the PRS I ordered gets here.
    Also- looks like it’s time to take a trip across the pond! NYC awaits you!

    Great video and I love your other videos of Incubus covers and lessons. I agree that you can tell the difference between the stock pickup and Tom's pickup with the gain added to the tone in contrast to the clean tones as Tom's pickup is more compressed as it is a low output pickup. Overall, it was a great, informative video and looking forward to future ones. I would love to hear a Vitamin cover and tutorial 🤘!

    Really cool project, appreciate all the work you keep putting into chasing that great tone of mics. Initially, I didn’t hear a huge difference on the wish you were here portion, but then I felt like I definitely noticed a great difference in the circles chorus and even more so on the 11 AM!
    Do you think you’d pick up a spruce arch top if one popped on Reverb? I’m forever watching for one.

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  3 месяца назад

      No problem! It’s subtle but not driving the amp as hard really has it’s benefits, especially when you want a cleaner sound 😁👍🏻
      I’d love to, but I just can’t justify the cost. That’s why I ended up going down this rabbit hole as I think most people wouldn’t be able to get one of the archtops either so hopefully the next video will show how you can get very close to the tones without the need to spend loads on guitars and amps etc 😁👍🏻

  • @pass_the_flask
    @pass_the_flask 3 месяца назад

    Anything with PAF output (7-8k) and AlNiCo 5 will basically get you there. The lower output you go the more gain you'll need to dial in on the amp, but I don't think it plays that much role by itself compared to a typical PAF which are already low-medium output. The Duncan '59 is basically bang on. Gibson 490R with an AlNiCo 5 magnet swap (what I use) works fantastic.
    The clean tone in the album is a giveaway imo that the guitar has enough output for a slightly overdriven sound on the clean channel. Low 7k range seems like a good guess. Ask Simon to check with a multimeter lol.

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  3 месяца назад

      Yes and no 😁. My stock pickup came in at 7.4k and was still driving my amp too hard. If Mike was using the archtop pickups at the time, the neck usually measures in at 6.5 - 6.8 and this makes more sense to me, especially for a song like Echo. This is a bit of an anomaly on the album as it’s the “cleanest” sounding but I would still expect it to be on the vintage high gain setting like everything else but with the gain dialled back to clean it up more.
      I’ve asked Simon if he wouldn’t mind taking the neck pickup out to see what is in the guitar for definite but it’s his guitar and it’s up to him whether he wants to or not. Hopefully he can clear it up for us all 😁👍🏻
      EDIT: Saying that, just been playing a long to Echo and there’s hardly a hint of breakup so I’m guessing that was done on the clean channel of the Tremoverb as even with my super low output pickup, on the vintage high gain, it’s still breaking up slightly!

    Nice, Tom's pick up is real close. I do agree on low output pickup for Morning View sound. Actually my Morning View sound is Rickenbacker 620 with Ethos overdrive, not as close as yours though.

      👍🏻 I have found out since I made this that the pickup Mike used was actually a Seymour Duncan Jazz neck pickup. The owner of his actual archtop confirmed that’s what is in the guitar a few weeks ago 😁. Thanks for watching!

    Cool video. I have a PRS Hollowbody Spruce (i have used it in some incubus covers here on RUclips), it's basically the same specs as the archtop Mike used minus the fat body ( at some point i also had an Archtop like the one Mike used, but regretfully sold it some years ago). My current PRS guitar comes with those Archtop pickups, which at this point they are pretty much unobtanium (if you want them you can only obtain them buy buying an old PRS). The thing is, for many years i tought Mike did not use those pickups, Beacuse in a early 2000 guitar magazine it was stated he changed those pickups for seymour ducan ones( if i recall they said it was a 59/JB combo). Because of that i always played with the ideia of changing the pickups in my guitar, but i like these archtop ones so much i never gained courage to take them off. But since you got info from some one who owns a real Mike Eizinger Archtop i can finally put to rest this lingering idea of changing these pickups.
    Thanks for the video, it was really informative.

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  3 месяца назад +1

      Thank you and no problem! I’m glad you like the archtops, as far as I can tell, that’s what he had in his guitar at the time but I’m not 100% on that. Simon that owns the actual guitar is hopefully going to confirm what pickups are in the guitar when he has a chance and then we’ll know for sure! I’ve seen a few people mention the Seymour Duncan 59 too but I can’t find any evidence to show he definitely changed to those pickups 😅
      Thanks for watching!

    Dear Nick what do you think you be the best Neural DSP plug-in for mikes tone? Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ Suite? or there's another you think is better and more versatile. They are having a nice discount :) thank you and thank you for your videos!! :))

    • @Fitzgerd
      @Fitzgerd  3 месяца назад +1

      Hey Fábio! No problem thanks for watching! It’s tricky with Neural as there’s no plugin that is based on the dual rectifier which is the preamp you’ll want for Mike’s tones. I have the Petrucci plugin that is based on his Mesa and it does a pretty good job but not strictly a dual rec and some of the mic IRs are very different in that plugin. It has got some great effects too and the ability to down tune your guitar is awesome as well! It’s the only one I have experience with and may be worth doing a trial before buying to see if you like it? If you want a strict dual rec copy, I’d look at what other companies have on offer 👍🏻
      Hope that helps!
