Personally I use a stethoscope with the hose left open at the end. This works for suspension noises as well and even better than leaving the metal pointer on the end. I agree 100% with your technique and am a 30+ year mechanic
Yes, a stethoscope with the end removed works great. What I show in this video is a very cheap alternative to a stethoscope for the average person. Thanks for watching!
I just wanted to say that this is a brilliant method. I have used the gas method and was always a litte eery about doing it that way but this is genius. I have a 4runner that has a misfire that I am trying to track down. Ive changed coil packs and plugs ands wires and the misfire remains so this is going to be my next move. Thanks so much.
Hope it works well for you. Just drag the end of the hose along all suspected areas. Thanks for watching! Be sure to rate thumbs up and share the video link with others.

Great idea, is that slight whilstle that you get when you start the engine part of this leak too? I have a similar sound at the moment when at very low rpms static, and increases in pitch with a tiny bit of gas applied.. Also get some strange issues when hard accelerating at random, sometimes like the engine is juddering/sticking trying to reach the higher rpm after a gear drop.. A 2018 Mercedes 220 diesel engine.. Not good
i have a 95 lexus v8 sc400. I see smoke coming from the thick hoses towards the rear of the intake and close to the firewall. the hose clamps also look burnt and smell. There are fumes coming from the area. I have rough idle, and the rpm goes in the wrong direction when i rev the car. The exhaust has sputtering sound. Does this sound like vacuum leak ?
if it is a diesel, you will notice increase in idle rpm for a moment. that is becasue of diesel speed adjusted by fuel rate not air; in contrast of gasoline engines.
God tip. Another way is using starter fluid. Just spray it over hoses, manifold, injection valves etc when the engine is running at idle. A vacuum leak will increase the idle speed when sprayed.
Have an important question that is directly related to this video.. my question is did this vacuum leak which was on this engine did it happen to set any trouble codes or warning lights??????
@@electronicsNmore I ask because I believe I have a vacuum leak that isn't triggering any trouble codes but it's still compromising engine performance as well as breaking. If you don't mind me sharing, I first noticed something when my brake pedal no longer retracts back to full upwards position. And the engine doesn't start in the cold very easily.. have a fluctuating idle.. it just seems as life I'm not getting enough vacuum to operate the brakes properly. Because all of the brakes grab. As if it's not releasing. Because there's not enough vacuum. But that would seem like it need to be an awfully huge vacuum leak to ruin engine performance so badly as well as breaking constantly on its own. But I can't find the damn vacuum leak? My brother believed it was the idle air control valve and I didn't believe his diagnosis fully, because I think it was a little bit of both. A worn I don't air control valve or dirty pintle and seat.. or it was just going bad.. but we replaced it and it only helped in the way that it stays running a little bit better. It feels like there's some sort of vacuum gate that is not closing and even opening at random causing the engines idle to fluctuate and compromising breaking as well. Phew... Uhhg. I said a mouthful lol sorry
Ive always sprayed carb cleaner around to find vacuum leaks. When the carb cleaner hits a leak, engine rpm increases. The problem is that doesn't work with todays engines. The computers will keep the rpms steady even when spraying directly into the intake. 😔
I understand your point, especially since I have a friend that's an audiologist, but you'd be surprised how loud leaks will sound with that funnel tight against your ear.
I can assure you it works on big and small leaks. All you have to do if move the tip around suspected areas. Smoke method does work good, as long as you don't have a cooling fan blowing the smoke all around. :-) A minute vacuum leak on your car won't even be noticeable.
That's wonderful YT for ya! They only notify a small number of my subs when I upload videos, and after they're uploaded, they get buried down the search results. Inferior videos get more views.
We need to make a smoke generator ! And feed it to the collector under low pressure. You can even just make a cigarette out of it ))) You will see where the smoke is leaking from
Plastic intake covers on many modern vehicles naturally make a hissing noise, so this would not be a very good method. Also, some vacuum leaks don't rear their ugly heads until the vehicle is under heavy load, so this method would only be good at detecting the type of leak that would affect the engine performance at idle.

Could not find a leak with a smoke test, found it in three minutes with this method, absolutely brilliant

How do you use a stethoscope for suspension please?I have a suspension problem i guess
@@denisouncho2513 You have to be able to duplicate the noise with the vehicle on the ground or on a lift. Obviously driving may pose a challenge
Another very helpful video that'll help a lot of people! Thank you and looking forward to your next video!

Yall should do a cross over video 😄

Did it work?
Outstanding use of brains and stuff you have on-hand in the shop! 👍👏
Thank you so much for this very easy way of finding a vacuum leak. I will be testing it out on my nb tomorrow. 👍
Great trick. I'm going to add this to my arsenal. Thanks for teaching us this
Brilliant. Love the perceived ease of it as well as the cost for the tool.
Excellent very clever I actually have a need to utilize this on my 3800 V6 appreciate you coming up with the solution.
Hope it works well for you. Just drag the end of the hose along all suspected areas. Thanks for watching! Be sure to rate thumbs up and share the video link with others.
Good thinking 99!
Amazing work, great mind process. I will try it tomorrow. Thanks and God Bless
This is excellent. Will add this to the other options (propane, starter fluid, smoke test).

Thanks. I think I have a vacuum leak near the intake manifold in the car and wasn’t sure how to find it on the cheap. This is very helpful.

Good idea was always taught to use carb clean and listen for the change this looks safer nice !
Thanks to your big info sir, very help ful tip

Brilliant best best idea I've seen so far I shared the link to this video in several places.

That is an awesome trick/tip. I've used long oil funnel but the hose is too cool. Thx

It's almost (I'm not committing, damn it! I know better) :) Perfection.....
that plastic stethoscope trick is pretty sick ngl, works well
Awesome! I don’t want set my car on fire with the break cleaner method 😊
Were you running extremely lean at that condition? And what kind of codes you got as a result
Let me know please
Great tip thanks.
Thanks, and you're welcome!
Great tip! Did I see some green coolant under where you had the leak?
No coolant leak. :-). I keep that engine tip top. Thanks for watching!
damn it works....
Great video..
You ever know what happened to "Photonicinduction"?
Thanks. I was wondering the same thing. Once or twice before he vanished for a period of time, but now it appears he's gone for good.
dude upload 2 videos this week
Brilliant!
I drench the thing with brake parts cleaner, but yeah fire can happen

Hi. Just wondering what size tube do u use?
Whatever size fits over a small funnel
I am going to try this "EASIEST Way" on my Mazda tomorrow.
If there's a vacuum leak, you shouldn't have any trouble finding it.
Have an important question that is directly related to this video.. my question is did this vacuum leak which was on this engine did it happen to set any trouble codes or warning lights??????

Where do you buy this ?
Any hardware store.

Did that vacuum leak trigger a engine code?
They usually dont, check engine lights come on when something running more that 25% malfunctioning.
Could you use a smoke machine?
Of course, but if you have good hearing, you'll find the leak with ease using what I show. Why spend money on a smoke machine?

a Car Engine Stethiscope!! 😁👍
The only problem with this idea is that the sound is high-frequency and us older folks can't hear that kind of sound.
