Jez and Peter drive two versions of the new Polestar 2. Can Volvo’s EV offshoot compete with Tesla and the newly-arrived challenger from Hyundai? Comment below!
I love the design of the Polestar 2, and it is the first EV I would consider buying as it looks great and I won't be embarrassed to drive around. However my main concern about Polestar is that it's parent company is Geely Motor the Chinese auto maker and I am worried about once I buy the car and connect my phone and other devices that have personal information, it will be stolen by the Chinese Government. Am I crazy or is this a legitimate concern?
I wasn't keen on the Polestar 2 because of it being a converted ICE car. Apparently I was wrong, it's a EV design that had to run a ICE platform temporarily. Same thing? Well anyway you've converted me and I quite like the car, bit put off by needing an optional pack to get all the safety equipment though. So the car with the Pilot pack is really the base priced car. I like the car and thanks for the review that explained a lot and was informative regarding ride and handling. I've just added the Polestar to my shopping list of EVs to consider.
Absolutely stunning and brilliant vehicle. I traded my Tesla model 3 in for this Polestar 2 with performance, pilot and plus packages. Absolutely no regrets! Thank you for your great review.
Good review, nice car. I recently did test drive from polestar dealership in Sydney. 1st impressions were great where we decided to hire the polestar 2 for a couple of days through Hertz to get better feel longer distance. Overall we were not disappointed but a few areas which could be better but not necessary a deal breaker from our perspective. 1. The indicated range on the car was 540 km but we never got higher than 390km when fully charged, couldn’t be sure but we suspect the car was standard 2 wheel front drive, not the extended range battery or all wheel drive. Also interesting when charging recommendation on charge display to charge up to 90% to preserve battery, so guess that further restricts range compared to laboratory test figure’s therefore real world figure at best was 390kms. For the car given it’s size the driver an passenger front seats although comfortable should have more space where centre console between seats cramped the driver & passenger which gave the feeling of being hemmed in. The car we had with sunroof was nice but lack of headroom entering & exiting the vehicle was annoying where you had to duck to avoid hitting head, me being 5’8 that shouldn’t have been a problem. Lastly no idea why but high transmission/ raised section on floor middle of back seat, kind of got in the way, not sure why that was there ! Overall still the car was still really good but before shelving out around $85k on road you would still want to address usability and ergonomics, that said the car and quality was top notch. Still serious about buying but in that price range got to do homework. Ps polestar bringing out updated model year end 23, rear wheel drive and longer range so not really worth buying before unless it’s I want now. Hope this helps anyone looking.

Odd comment to say you only think Android Automotive is fine because you don't like developing for Android. That has little relevance to most people. Talk about the user experience of Automotive - is it quick, responsive and easy to navigate? Does it have all the features that consumer would expect? Are there any tangible downsides compared to manufacturer-developed infotainments?
It's not really odd when you take into account how I said I didn't like Android. The context for why I don't like Android is important - it's not just that I'm a smug Apple user, it's that I have direct experience with Android and didn't like it. So to say I liked Android Automotive and explaining that it had shattered my expectations is a useful thing to say. Pretty sure we did talk about the fact it was quick, responsive and easy to navigate, that was kind of the point of us mentioning it.
I own a Tesla M3. Love it to bits. I’m very curious about the polestar, looking for a 2nd EV. But I do feel there is a HUGE plethora of features the TM3 has over the polestar which I would miss too much to be happy to convert… I will sit on my hands a little longer. This is no doubt a nice car, but comparing apples and apples. I wish this platform well, it will have no issues selling. More competition is better for ALL of us! I wish they reviewed the base model interior as that’s what most people would be buying into and comparing to the TM3.
@@susand9296 haha well, to be fair the benchmark is actually been set incredibly high by Tesla, by means of features, safety and connectivity and Performace… The thing is everyone else has bashed Tesla for so long (“build quality” Bla bla bla - when in reality I know many owners here including 5 in the family have had great experiences… ) But the reality is every car manufacturer is scrambling to catch up. I drove a polestar the other day. In an effort to not be biased and was honestly massively disappointed. The platform is designed around a traditional car body - the back was crammy with no leg room and a transmission tunnel bump in the floor. The drivers position felt the same. The cruise control fluctuations exceeded 9km/h + and - the set speed over hills. Hey it’s a lovely car… but it felt like just a normal car electrified. I could go on. And literally hundreds more. The rapid pace of updating and features being added to existing old Teslas is actually something to behold. Of course - the single most important metric when comparing these cars is that - each model is within the same price range. It’s thanks to Tesla that Hyundai and polestars will become significantly better cars over the next few years. This is undeniable. So now my neighbor owns a polestar and I’ve driven it. I lost all interest in it - especially since he paid more for it. Early days he did try to bash Tesla build quality until I took him for a drive and 4 years later nothing has gone wrong…..
Guys can you give an update on range? I am keen to see how far the two are apart. I prefer the duel motor version, but i need range as i live in country NSW. Oh, also, any suggestions for bumpy country roads?
if you are considering buying this vehicle. it is highly likely you will be frustrated by the level of dishonesty with their delivery timeframes. I decided to proceed with one through a novated lease, and was told delivery would be 3-6 months. I went to the Polestar website, and they publicised 'available now' cars. The number of these online, including the one I chose, fluctuated from 20 to over 80 within a couple of days. When I informed the novated lease company that polestar was promoting the model I chose as 'available now', he said polestar was having problems with this system and there was no way those vehicles were ready for immediate delivery. I said given the way polestar manages its supply chains there was absolutely no way that statement was credible. Fundamentally, Polestar are deliberately luring in customers to seal a deal by effectively lying about the delivery timeframes at their own website. I understand that there may be supply chain challenges, but lying about it is no way to do business or gain customer loyalty. Be very careful about what you are told, and if timely delivery is an issue for you, I would steer away from Polestar based on my experience to date.
Lovely car, etc. The problem with all EVs except Tesla is public charging when you're on a big trip. If it's not reliable you can get in real trouble. Try telling your better half and the kids that you're not going anywhere for a couple of hours because a charging station is kaput. They are more complicated because they have to accept multiple car brands and payment methods. So, not a good solution. Any long journey has to include an overnight stop at a hotel with decent charging facilities. They are lots of them around, and getting better, but you have to plan ahead. Happy motoring!
I should have watched this before commenting. I like that the presenters showed that both Polestar cars were Volvo concept cars. There's a lot of indepth talk on how the car feels and especially rides which I find interesting. It's also interesting how some like the ride quality while others don't. I drove the car and it's wonderful. But I don't think, as an EV, it shines. It shines as a car. So, Volvo/Polestar needs to get cracking and get their dedicated EVs out that have the aerodynamics and range that vehicles like the Mach E and Ioniq 5 and EV6 have. But it is a quality first effort EV from Polestar and it is a somewhat affordable entry level into the brand.
This is the 2nd car The 1st car is an luxury cars around the $200,000 aud it's not sold in Australia though That's why it's called polestar 2 Virtually all the non Tesla brands beat Tesla in ride handling as Tesla have a hard ride and usually needs a replacement of the suspension after 3 years. Can have all this software but it doesn't mean the car is great
@@zagan1 The Polestar 1 was a production version of Volvo's Concept Coupe and this one is a production version of Volvo's Concept 40.2. The Polestar 1 was a hybrid and full of carbon fiber to bring the weight down. A nice car but very expensive. But that car, the 1, was built on Volvo's SPA platform. This one is built on the CMA platform and neither are dedicated platforms. I didn't mention Tesla because they aren't for me. They lead the EV space and perform well but the suspensions and a lot of the quality aspects aren't as refined as other vehicles. I think the Hyundai Motors cars are quite refined. Polestar's 3 will have the dedicated platform with better aerodynamics and should be a fine vehicle and very competitive. But it's expensive. The Polestar 4 coming out late next year is more affordable and will also be on a dedicated EV platform. Also, the upcoming Polestars will be designed from Polestar's design team and not based on a Volvo concept car. Although most of these designers came from Volvo, they're making their own design language. But I still feel the relationship to Volvo in the new designs, like they are the "hipper" cousin in the family.
Great to see them in Australia. I'm test driving one in 2 weeks and am pretty happy to lay down the money if I don't find any dealbreakers in the drive. Did you see what it was like without the plus pack? All the additions seem pretty minor, and I'm worried about the full glass roof in the hot Australian sun
Hi Chris - they both had the Plus Pack and the roof was surprisingly good on a very hot day. And I hate glass roofs. As they both had the plus, it’s hard to say what they’re like without.
Excellent review guys. Test driving Monday so should be interesting. Unfortunately if you want Pilot or Plus pack you have to stick to standard range to stay within NSW rebate limit of $68750 dutiable value. Of course can still get stamp duty refund if below $78000.
Wow! with a huge transmission tunnel in the middle of the cabin to reduce usable space deliberately to test users' tolerance. Must be a very first for EV. Pretty Ingenious!
@@bananabear009 Shared platform for now, but no doubt that will disappear in a few years. Fortunately I don't really need the drive train area in my car for anything in particular. Yes, I'd prefer just a clear space, but if the rest of the car proves to be better for my needs than others, it's something I'll put up with. Ultimately, I want an EV sooner rather than later. The lack of options in Australia make me happier to compromise, if that means I get one early in 2022.
Test drove a Standard Range Single Motor last weekend. Very impressive, clever and relatively affordable car. Convinced us to order one which we should have delivery of in about 2 months time, which will include a towbar. One detail that I've seen no mention of in the many reviews I watched on the Polestar 2 is the lack of any noticeable 'new car smell' which for us is a major plus. I have chemical intolerance issues and the chemicals that contribute to that distinctive odour are definitely not welcome in our case. Seemingly in keeping with their sustainable environmental ethos Polestar have avoided chemical inputs as much as is possible with this being the positive result. Very much looking forward to the 300+km winding drive home from the dealership in the coming month!
No, it's not. They are pretty close in there pronouncement. O and Ö is different letters and pronounced different. Öhlins Racing AB is the name of the company. I'm Swedish
17:22 I noticed the bonnet didn't close properly, is this part of the Quality build problems you were referring to, is it just another typical shitty Chinese lack of quality product ?
Hi Zane. Unlike most bonnets, this has two hinges, on the left and right. A little bit of pressure with both hands will close it, or release it a little higher.
Hi Gipper - like any optional extra, it's what you value in a car. If your daily driving is in the city, you're either going to set the Ohlins at their softest setting - which I guess is still firmer than the standard car - so it just depends on what you want. I was quite happy to drive the dual motor as it was (I stole it to get lunch) but the ride/handling on the standard suspension is really good. The brakes are awesome, but only if you're really going to use them. The mix between regen and brakes on the standard car is fairly powerful.
Love them or not, Tesla has driven yhe whole industry to develop cars like this. Traditional auto makers weren't going to disrupt like Tesla has. The Uber of auto.
"it has this really cool feature!" (proceeds to not show the feature) So why bother mentioning it if you're gonna half arse your job? Very sloppy 'review', it's like you just winged it the whole time.
I cannot agree more with the comment about how AWFUL Android is. And people expect to get Apple Car Play? How do you approach Google with that request? Hahaha Anyway, ours is on the way. Predicted arrival is June but with current world situation we’ll see.
Small detail: Polestar is a sub-brand of Volvo which is now a subsidiary of the Chinese company Geely. The Polestar is built in China. They are very nice, well built cars, but please stop trying to kid us that they are Swedish….
I think we should focus a little less (not ignore completely, mind you) on where it's built and have a little more regard for the research and design and development - which happens in great part in Sweden. We haven't ignored that they're built in China, but we don't believe that we're the built makes them entirely a product of that country. - Mike Stevens
@@WheelsAustralia Exactly. Perfect response. Most products I buy are developed and designed in the USA or Japan or Korea and made in China. Doesn't make any of them "Chinese." btw, some Polestar 3s will be made in the USA. And now, some Teslas are made in China.
look guys as you already know, cool cars ( all ev's) , great for the environment, makes you feel like a woke person, BUT you can still get a used corolla for 15K and 35K in gas and maintenance can take you 10- 15 years. by which time they'll have much cheaper EV's. so pretty much like most cars we buy though STATUS symbols, yeah!
Idk what gas prices are like in your country, but places in the USA are setting high $6 a gallon and expecting $7 if things keep going the way they are. And as oil and gas stop getting subsidized by tax payer money we’re going to need to find an alternative to gas cars.
I bought a TM3, cause I wanted safest car In class. I wanted one of the fastest cars in class. I saved enough to buy a luxury priced car, I have significant home solar and have done 80,000km off my own solar. I’ve always done all my own maintenance on cars, and there has been nothing to do so far (except wiper fluid and tyre rotation). I love fast cars, and the only challenge I get is from motorbikes - Ducati 1200 will be a car length behind up to 140. I love the connected features. I got an insurance claim from car park damage thanks to century cam I pinned the guy to the wall. I love love love autopilot, literally don’t drive the highway to work. I love that the car is always connected to the internet. I can go on and on and on. I had a Corolla before this. I think you mixed up STATUS, with “satisfaction”. 😉 but hey. Not everyone can afford a luxury EV. Cheaper models with basic ass Corolla specs will be coming. Hang in there. If you wanted a car for daily commuting, spending more then 20k on anything “luxury” makes no sense.
How do these manufacturers get so many of the little things wrong D’oh !!! Firstly, there’s no start / stop button in this or the XC40. There is in the diesel, petrol and hybrid XC40, but in the electric thru just put a blank in it’s place So, the Volvo group have removed an intrinsic layer of safety, it’s not a white goods, it’s your car, so you want the theatre and interaction, this for me is unforgivable, as I was so looking forward to buying one of these, but can’t now grrrrr Also, let’s be honest, these are only really four seater vehicles, so why use the less practical and archaic 60:40 split rear seats, instead of the better and more useable 40:20:40 it’s another school boy / girl error Also the key thing is a joke , I’m not 12, I’m a 48 year old and want a car 🤬 I think there are actually 4 models, the two single motor and two dual motor, if you include the performance package, which is a waste of money as no one is gonna keep getting out the spanner’s and putting this on a lift to vary them Have a knob installed to adjust it or in the massive centre screen grrrrrrr And finally, an even bigger crime than safety by Polestar, it’s not available in Swedish Racing Green 🚙🇸🇪 I’d hoped Polestar we’re gonna be the new Saab to their Volvo sibling, but sadly no cigar 😢
What do you actually need to Start or Stop in an EV. The term in this context is such a misnomer. For the P2, when you sit down in the seat the car "starts". When you get up and out it "stops".
@@punksjutgbd yeah exactly, so if a child jumps into the seat etc I prefer the theatre and control of my car and not a white goods It’s like we have on / off switches on our plug sockets , so if you just insert the plug, devices don’t start. It’s an extra layer of safety and for me it’s intrinsic and especially shocked by Volvo If you look at Porsche, Jaguar and MachE they have a Start / Stop button They understand their buyers 🚙👍🏻 It would be an awful world if we all liked everything the same as everyone else and have the same thoughts and opinions But thanx for feeling the need to interact with my comment towards the video and enjoy the long bank holiday weekend ☀️😎
@@JohnInSale I believe the child would have to weigh as much as an adult since the sensor detects weight. They would also need your digital key or physical key. I'm sure Volvo (yes I know) has safety nailed since that is always a main focus. One could relax that there's no start/stop button. Other manufacturers likely do it out of habit and we see that Polestar is diverging from all legacy thinking. This approach is very welcome imo.
Chinese Communist controlled ownership (Geely), build and associated car monitoring security concerns are a deal breaker for me. Shame, a great looking car with above average qualities.

Something with auto ride height adjustment
would like to see a comparison review with Tesla Model 3
if you are considering buying this vehicle. it is highly likely you will be frustrated by the level of dishonesty with their delivery timeframes.
I have used the ski port a number of times but not for skis. Been when moving strange long things like my Dyson vac
This is the 2nd car
The 1st car is an luxury cars around the $200,000 aud it's not sold in Australia though
That's why it's called polestar 2
Virtually all the non Tesla brands beat Tesla in ride handling as Tesla have a hard ride and usually needs a replacement of the suspension after 3 years.
Swedish gold might be a reference to the gold in their flag?
Investing in Polestar early. The next Tesla?
Great review “I am excited “
Make sure you pick up GGPI shares Monday. It's gonna rocket 🚀 🥳
Wow! with a huge transmission tunnel in the middle of the cabin to reduce usable space deliberately to test users' tolerance. Must be a very first for EV. Pretty Ingenious!
The framework is for their Hybrids/petrol as well, hence the tunnel. Not a dedicated EV platform like the Hyundai/Kia or Tesla one.
I know. But EV really shouldn't be like that. That's a problem to build EV with a shared platform.
@@Ben.StevenswithaV I understand everyone has different priorities. But for me, the transmission tunnel is weird and unacceptable for an EV.
@@Ben.StevenswithaV Next year it will disappear with the Polestar 3. See the Precept for a preview of what will be found in the Polestar 3.
Finally an EV car worth considering, still too soon for one though.
2 midsize Polestar 2
It's ticking all the boxes for my needs...
it's pronounced O-lins guys
No, it's not. They are pretty close in there pronouncement.
O and Ö is different letters and pronounced different. Öhlins Racing AB is the name of the company.
I'm Swedish
17:22 I noticed the bonnet didn't close properly, is this part of the Quality build problems you were referring to, is it just another typical shitty Chinese lack of quality product ?
Hi Zane. Unlike most bonnets, this has two hinges, on the left and right. A little bit of pressure with both hands will close it, or release it a little higher.

Are the brakes and Ohlins really worth $8k or does the standard suspension work well enough….. especially if this is your daily driver is the city?
Hi Gipper - like any optional extra, it's what you value in a car. If your daily driving is in the city, you're either going to set the Ohlins at their softest setting - which I guess is still firmer than the standard car - so it just depends on what you want. I was quite happy to drive the dual motor as it was (I stole it to get lunch) but the ride/handling on the standard suspension is really good. The brakes are awesome, but only if you're really going to use them. The mix between regen and brakes on the standard car is fairly powerful.
I don't like the PP for bumpy roads. The standard suspension is better and quite firm, but at least not punishing like the PP is.
Very good motorcars but that bloody weight as with all EV's = 2000kg+, nasty.
EVs save the world? It's just a myth.
Grate ev content
the ev i am waiting for is this @ $30k
You'll be waiting a while!
Nice to look at, designed in europe maybe, but sorry i can't get past made in prc. Q4 will be my ev.
Love them or not, Tesla has driven yhe whole industry to develop cars like this. Traditional auto makers weren't going to disrupt like Tesla has. The Uber of auto.
"it has this really cool feature!"
(proceeds to not show the feature)
So why bother mentioning it if you're gonna half arse your job?
Doesn't make any of them "Chinese."
btw, some Polestar 3s will be made in the USA. And now, some Teslas are made in China.
@@benjaminsmith2287 And from what i understand the Best Teslas are made in China
hmm.. looks like the show could use a bit of scripting. And swedish gold.. that's the yellow in the flag.
I don't think those safety belts are Swedish gold. It's only that the Chinese, who is actually the boss behind the scene, loves gold. LOL!
Nope. It's Swedish. You'll find the same Swedish gold in the Volvo s60 Polestar.
@@benjaminsmith2287 Only because it’s in another car from literally the same company?
look guys as you already know, cool cars ( all ev's) , great for the environment, makes you feel like a woke person, BUT you can still get a used corolla for 15K and 35K in gas and maintenance can take you 10- 15 years. by which time they'll have much cheaper EV's. so pretty much like most cars we buy though STATUS symbols, yeah!
Idk what gas prices are like in your country, but places in the USA are setting high $6 a gallon and expecting $7 if things keep going the way they are. And as oil and gas stop getting subsidized by tax payer money we’re going to need to find an alternative to gas cars.
Look I don’t know about you guys but I can live in a shack under a bridge … that’s your argument
No HUD in Australian version 🤷
Built in China my only concern.
So does ur iPhone
Стоят два взрослых мужика и как бабки ни о чем трещат и на машинки онанизмом страдают!
Tesla about to get smashed now the old hands are in the game. The build quality makes Tesla look like a joke.
Absolutely NO WAY... Built in Chy Na!
How do these manufacturers get so many of the little things wrong D’oh !!!
Firstly, there’s no start / stop button in this or the XC40.
There is in the diesel, petrol and hybrid XC40, but in the electric thru just put a blank in it’s place
So, the Volvo group have removed an intrinsic layer of safety, it’s not a white goods, it’s your car, so you want the theatre and interaction, this for me is unforgivable, as I was so looking forward to buying one of these, but can’t now grrrrr
Also, let’s be honest, these are only really four seater vehicles, so why use the less practical and archaic 60:40 split rear seats, instead of the better and more useable 40:20:40 it’s another school boy / girl error
Also the key thing is a joke , I’m not 12, I’m a 48 year old and want a car 🤬
I think there are actually 4 models, the two single motor and two dual motor, if you include the performance package, which is a waste of money as no one is gonna keep getting out the spanner’s and putting this on a lift to vary them
Have a knob installed to adjust it or in the massive centre screen grrrrrrr
And finally, an even bigger crime than safety by Polestar, it’s not available in Swedish Racing Green 🚙🇸🇪
I’d hoped Polestar we’re gonna be the new Saab to their Volvo sibling, but sadly no cigar 😢
What do you actually need to Start or Stop in an EV. The term in this context is such a misnomer. For the P2, when you sit down in the seat the car "starts". When you get up and out it "stops".
@@punksjutgbd yeah exactly, so if a child jumps into the seat etc
I prefer the theatre and control of my car and not a white goods
It’s like we have on / off switches on our plug sockets , so if you just insert the plug, devices don’t start. It’s an extra layer of safety and for me it’s intrinsic and especially shocked by Volvo
If you look at Porsche, Jaguar and MachE they have a Start / Stop button
They understand their buyers 🚙👍🏻
It would be an awful world if we all liked everything the same as everyone else and have the same thoughts and opinions
But thanx for feeling the need to interact with my comment towards the video and enjoy the long bank holiday weekend ☀️😎
