  • A whirlwind tour of the Mooreland House!
    Venmo: @moorelandhouse

    #historicpreservation #abandonedplaces #restoration
    This is another restoration video of our historic house. We saw this historic house for sale that had wonderful stone masonry and was mostly a brick house. The Romanesque architecture was amazing for this cheap house. With the slate roof and the masonry repair we had to do it was a great renovating house. We have to cope with termites damage and termite repair. The stained glass and fireplace mantels were amazing. If you are looking for abandoned historic homes or abandoned places look no further. We don't have any scary stories but a virtual house tour of the Mooreland House aka Mooreland Mansion aka Harrodsburg Castle aka Ashfeld Manor is a great place to follow.
    Our DIY historic preservation videos are not necessarily how to videos. We get a lot of inspiration from some of our favorite channels like Wild Wonderful Off Grid, Pure Living for Life, Onboard Lifestyles, Mike Haduck Masonry and many more. We love our little castle on the hill.

    Oh my gosh, this tour really shows the amount of work that this old gal needs. It seems daunting to me but you two always take it all in stride. I can't even imagine what some of the needed repairs would cost. The tour shows just how huge the structure is. I always wonder why wealthy people who have millions and billions don't save some of our historic buildings. They have the money to do it--to restore and retrofit, but you rarely hear about wealthy people saving our history. It's always the little DIY guy who has to scramble for materials and money. It's impressive to me what you two have managed to do already. I hope your channel keeps growing and gets you some $$$ to help with the expensive and extensive repairs that Moorland House needs.

    Thank you for the wonderful tour! The square footage of your attic is twice the size of my entire 1890's Queen Anne cottage but Ive got a 20 foot ceiling in the attic as well. Loved all the rooms, but as an artist, the top of the tower brought back memories of when I had my first studio in the tower of Loudoun House in the mid 1990's. Loudoun is an 1852 Gothic revival villa that is the home of the Lexington Art League in Lexington, KY. If I were blessed with a Miss Moreland style house, I'd put my studio in the attic. Your attic once everything was put back looks like it would have a lot of natural light and plenty of good places to set up an easel and lots of storage for paintings, framing supplies and a workspace to do all of that. Also a great place to set up my wind up gramophone and party like its 1909.

      @@moorelandhouse Well, I've been down a similar road as you with my big 1903 Victorian commercial building. There were many times it seemed like clean out of old pipes, old wiring, plaster, lath, taking apart, etc would never end, but it did and suddenly I was putting back together and finishing up - every little and big project you do is another step forward . At one point, I was at the final up hill battle and then is was all down hill to the finish line - its weird but all of sudden things moved forward rapidly to the finish. I have a feeling that will happen to you at some point, so, I look at everything as progress. One thing I did do, and I am happy I did, was a did hire a crew of 4 able bodies that worked just 2 full weeks of clean out - remove pipes, plaster, etc. - and boy did that put me ahead and I was like - why didn't I do this earlier - because then I was able to focus on the actual restoration. I know you want do do a lot yourself, and you are doing a wonderful job.

      Yes, we have been thinking that we will probably hire the trades people to do the plumbing and electric work once we get the historic restoration parts done.

Oh, any chance the large 3rd floor wood closet is house's "cedar closet", a place store seasonal clothes? Hmm! I'm hanging in here to see the unveiling of the those stained glass windows someday! Cheers snd keep up the great work 🙂

    Thanks for the walk thru! I had seen your last one but that was a long time ago and this really refreshed my memory as to where everything is. I know when you were doing the work outside where the main floor bathroom was and then you went inside, it took a while for my mind to 'twist' to understand both perspectives of that area. Also for some reason, I thought the door by the back stairs were actually heading out to the 'backyard' but now understand that it goes to the side yard under the portico.

    What a wonderful project and you've already accomplished more than most could hope to do on their own. We remodeled a four-story Victorian in San Francisco (about 8500 sq ft) years ago and two things that we added that really made it more comfortable was a dumbwaiter and laundry chute. We weren't inclined to add washer/dryer on each floor so the laundry chute meant that all clothes and linens were easily dropped to the ground floor laundry. Clean linens and clothing went back up via the dumbwaiter. Good luck. Great YT channel.

    Wonderful tour, guys! TY for the floor plans!! They really help and I appreciate that you put them in every week. I too love the gorgeous front door, the beautiful grand staircase, all the old fireplaces and their tiles and/or carvings...odd that it is, I love the one in the entry hallway! I can't wait to see inside the side portico! I'm giddy walking thru the breakfast room, the butler's pantry with all that gorgeous wood...the kitchen! That will be fantastic when you get to working on that. In the cellar, all those old stone walls and the arches are so cool! The upper floor is so exciting to think about, how that's all going to come together, I love the fireplace in Minnie Ball's room. So much room in the attic, too, and I adore the old back staircases, and the tower stairs omg! lol honestly guys, this castle is fantastic and I'm so glad to be along for the ride as you restore Miss Mooreland back to life!

    It's always nice to get to see the different rooms in the house. Thank you for the tour! It brings back memories of past videos. I do have to say, the attic is my favorite area too. Those ceilings are amazing. The wood is so pretty. It brought back memories of you getting rid of the termites that had taken up residence in the wood up there. I had never seen anything like that before. You were both troupers....and did what needed to be done to get rid of those pests! And look at it now. It looks SO good. It won't be long and spring will be here. It will be more comfortable working inside and outside!

    Her stairwell and stained glass take my breath away every time! Would you ever consider having helpers who are experts in historic preservation come in to help? I wonder if you have any folks in your area who would volunteer their time or expertise? Not that you can’t do a lot all by yourselves, which you’ve shown you can (and I know you enjoy doing the work yourselves!). Just wondering if you ever wanted help with the myriad Ms Moreland projects?

    • @moorelandhouse
      @moorelandhouse  5 месяцев назад

      Once we get past the historic preservation things like the hot lime mortar masonry and the slate roofing, we might hire out the trades like plumbing and electrical work.
