Yep , watching Satch nearly butcher all of his songs was evidence of Eddie's swing.
Satch is an awesome player but man was his covering of Ed's songs really flat.

As Eddie once said...."I cheat. Why make things hard?"....Whether it's this, or his EVH Scale/ Symmetrical Scale ideas, or his pick on one string/ legato the next string licks or of course tremolo picking and tapping...Eddie was the MASTER at taking a simple concept and milking it for all it's worth.
Even his synth playing. Everyone had access to the chords in JUMP and the solo isn't that difficult for a trained pianist....BUT he wrote the damn song and when he hits the keys after the solo it sounds epic...
Eddie is an endless treasure chest of great idea's. .........Hope you are feeling better.
That lick sounds amazing. I think he does a repeating version of this on the 5150 song - in the 1989 Tokyo.

The thing I love about EVH, is not only his awesome playing style and his very tasty solos.....but when he's playing; he always looks like he's having the time of his life. He always looks like he's having so much dang fun! Vernon Reid said this once, and he's so right!

another guitarist that most people have forgotten about but was outstanding was Tommy Bolin his album Teaser will blow you away with the incredible things he could do and the most interesting thing about Tommy was he was self taught, I hope you'll consider doing a reaction to his volume of music

One thing in my 50 years of being a music lover and critic is to see someone slow it down to the point it’s almost crawling so to speak. George Lynch did it with Heaven Scent and it’s incredible. Just something cool about seeing how slow you can play something instead of how fast you can play it. I have heard bands speed up songs and ruin them. KISS has done this a few times. I always thought KISS was much better playing slower back in the 75-77 era. Metallica has always been great at keeping songs at the correct speed and it transfer very well live. It’s a true art
He actually played this type of lick by picking only the open high E string - the rest of the notes are hammer-from-nowhere and pulloffs with the left hand only. Check out the early audio interviews Steve Rosen has posted since Eddie's death, there's a couple where he demos this lick to Steve and explains the picking. Variations were used in Eruption, I'm the One, Panama, 5150, etc.
I guess I had it figured out right the first time, when I read the tablature to the second lead break for 'I'm The One" decades ago. Just couldn't play it as fast as Eddie. This way is more effective, seems to me. Even though it's not exactly the way Ed did it. You know what he'd say! "Hell, if it sounds 'good', it 'is' good!" R.I.P., EVH 🎸

Hey Robert, thanks for the riff. How do you like that EVH? I purchased one but returned it. I didn't feel it was worth the money. I expected better hardware and playability.
@eyeblossom Not trying to answer for Robert but I have an EVH Striped Series and love it. Wonder if yours maybe needed a better setup. You know I recently got an 84 Kramer and it plays just as good if not better though. It was half the price too. Thinking about buying another 84 Kramer and painting stripes on it like a 5150. Maybe too much of a Van Halen nerd move. 🤷🏻♂️😁😎
@DeputyVanHalen5150 You sir are not a VH nerd, and you are certainly no Waldo. Eddie and VH captured something that will never be repeated. I was playing their music at backyard parties in the summer of 84 and I made it to that tour with my band mates. For me, that energy and time are relived everytime I start ripping out some VH licks. And playing "Panama: or "Ain't talkin bout love" on a red and white striped beauty is even more of a thrill. I have considered the 84 Kramer myself. I will probably go that route with a white one, tape it up, and top it with some red paint. Rock on my brother. And for those about to rock, we salute you!

It’s a nightmare. For me it goes against fetboard logic, where higher notes are on higher strings or up the fretboard. But I said I won’t eat until I get it LOL. Thanks a lot for making me lose weight!

Great vid. That lick is really similar to the one at the start of Eruption, only it's not in A minor and starts on the open E string rather than the E note on the B string. A nice one to learn either way.
Get well soon, Robert. Some nasty bugs going around. Its crazy how some licks sound like crap slow, but are amazing if you can play them fast. Having severe arthritis, i struggle with that. Keep up the great work, brother. 👍
