Yep , watching Satch nearly butcher all of his songs was evidence of Eddie's swing. Satch is an awesome player but man was his covering of Ed's songs really flat.
@@TheAgentAssassin You do know that Stern performance was basically last minute, right? I doubt any of us would be able to do half as well as Satch did with 24 hours notice.
As Eddie once said...."I cheat. Why make things hard?"....Whether it's this, or his EVH Scale/ Symmetrical Scale ideas, or his pick on one string/ legato the next string licks or of course tremolo picking and tapping...Eddie was the MASTER at taking a simple concept and milking it for all it's worth. Even his synth playing. Everyone had access to the chords in JUMP and the solo isn't that difficult for a trained pianist....BUT he wrote the damn song and when he hits the keys after the solo it sounds epic... Eddie is an endless treasure chest of great idea's. .........Hope you are feeling better.
Great vid. That lick is really similar to the one at the start of Eruption, only it's not in A minor and starts on the open E string rather than the E note on the B string. A nice one to learn either way.
This lick was used in Eruption, Somebody get me a doctor, 5150 etc. and Ed always begins the open E string with an upstroke followed by hammers (including pull offs on the B string) from nowhere.
This riff is similar to the riff page plays at the end of the solo in rock n roll. Pentatonic shape pulled off to an open string in a loopable pattern. Despite the licks being technically near same, the result and style comes across very different when applied. Nice video bro, made me feel like I was hanging out at a guitar shop with a friend!
The thing I love about EVH, is not only his awesome playing style and his very tasty solos.....but when he's playing; he always looks like he's having the time of his life. He always looks like he's having so much dang fun! Vernon Reid said this once, and he's so right!
another guitarist that most people have forgotten about but was outstanding was Tommy Bolin his album Teaser will blow you away with the incredible things he could do and the most interesting thing about Tommy was he was self taught, I hope you'll consider doing a reaction to his volume of music
Cool Man!!! 🎸🎸🎸 This is an old solo of Neal Schon, which he said was his favorite one to play: Of A Lifetime. Yep an old one. I'm 72, but I still listen to VH, Old Journey, Zep, etc. I've listened to just about EVERY BAND. Cool Riff with EVH Technique. 👍👍👍 Subscribed
Question: do you use an amp or some specific digital amp sound to get that kind of tone ? Effects (Phaser, Flanger ?) digital ones ? THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR 🎸🎶MOTIVATION !
Hope you feel better soon Robert? It would be cool if you did something on "Mick Mars"? The unsung guitar hero, that so many know, yet pay him so little attention! Thanks dude...
That's great! I'll definitely use this. I just released a song in B a month or so ago, the lead break really could have used this. I'm no lead guitarist, but I currently have no choice.
Thanks for the vid Robert. I have been told it was a Clapton lick that was Eddie-fied with the hammer on from nowhere. It’s in the fast bit of the Panama solo.
Eddie used it before the VH II album. Second lead break on "I'm The One", off VH I album. I know this because I've tried to replicate it for decades, but no 'real' success.A trick in the hearing of it I guess, with all the echo and reverb Ed had going on back then. Thanks Brotha, for figuring it out and sharing it, and I pray you get well soon! Thought your demo of the Soldano SLO 30 was great. I'm going with the new FRIEDMAN Vintage 'PLEX' amp, though, for my next tube amp, once they're available. Had an EVH 5150 III 6L6 Mini a few years back, then sold it. A great amp, but the FRIEDMAN PLEX amp sounds much better to my ears.
You do that so naturally ❤ I hope you are feeling better now. Fantastic lesson. I’m an old player but still have a few more licks to learn before I go to the afterlife.❤ I’ve never learned to read music or even tabs … I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS LESSON. ITS SO PERFECT FOR ME. EDDIE WAS AMAZING HOW BOUT AMAZING STUFF FROM IAN ANDERSON. I BRILLIANT SALMON FARMERS AND A KICK A ROCK N ROLL LEAD GUITAR PLAYER . AQUA LUNG . SO MANY GREAT PIONEERING EDGE CUTTING ROCK N ROLL LICKS ‘ PLEASE
Get well soon, Robert. Some nasty bugs going around. Its crazy how some licks sound like crap slow, but are amazing if you can play them fast. Having severe arthritis, i struggle with that. Keep up the great work, brother. 👍
Fair play I could see you were struggling there . I'm not referring to your playing I mean getting the video done and being ill. Thanks for the content as always 👍
Hope you're getting better... just about to hit 500k... right on, man! NAMM right around the corner and I reminded of 1st meeting you at the Vola Booth in 2019... you caught the NAMM-Thrax then...😮 I'm guessing you're not going to be there this year? Thanks for another awesome EVH lesson... you ROCK! Please, get some rest! 😎🎸🤘🐦
How do you get the sound of his guitar it has to be in the amp and pedals not the guitar can you explain to (me) us how you get the van halen tone 3:47
Love your Eddie lick videos man thanks for this! Now gey some rest brother we need ya at 100% and more importantly you're family needs ya at 100%!!! I instantly recognized this lick from Eruption. Just minus the high E string. Pure awesomeness!!! You're a trooper though sir! Thanks again for takin the time out to make this video and share this lick. 🤘💪🔥
Wish I could give you that cool 500K, I just been here to long but you'll get it soon! Making the video seemed to help, you looked much better by the end, music heals. And eddie's the man.
Thanks for the quickie video! How about some Rik Emmett of Triumph? Check out the guitar solo on “Rock and Roll Machine”. Love Rik’s machine gun lick phrase on that solo. Hope you feel better!
One thing in my 50 years of being a music lover and critic is to see someone slow it down to the point it’s almost crawling so to speak. George Lynch did it with Heaven Scent and it’s incredible. Just something cool about seeing how slow you can play something instead of how fast you can play it. I have heard bands speed up songs and ruin them. KISS has done this a few times. I always thought KISS was much better playing slower back in the 75-77 era. Metallica has always been great at keeping songs at the correct speed and it transfer very well live. It’s a true art
So much of that Eddie vibe was all about the rhythm and swing. Sort of simple idea but delivered with so much kinetic energy. Thanks!

Yeah Satch will have it tuned up for show time.
So much is in the hands!
Absolutely.
Open strings are a secret weapon. I love those wide intervals!

Appreciate you bringing us content while still feeling under the weather. Very admirable. Hope you feel better soon man!
@robertbaker congratulations! Looks like 500k! Feel better soon! Cheers
Great vid. That lick is really similar to the one at the start of Eruption, only it's not in A minor and starts on the open E string rather than the E note on the B string. A nice one to learn either way.
That lick sounds amazing. I think he does a repeating version of this on the 5150 song - in the 1989 Tokyo.
Well done. Hope you feel better soon.
Recognized that lick right away! Blew my mind when I realized that was all he was doing there. Simple but sounds complicated!
thanks for the quick video, Robert... hope ya feel better soon
Get feeling better man. Thanks for what you do.
Feel better, man! Great vid, I love using open string notes in riffs.
Thanks for that specific evh lesson. FANTASTIC 👏. Love those short ones 🎸. Greetings from 🇩🇪

That’s a great trick/lick to pull in. Thank you for making this video. I’m going to pull this in to my own playing. I also hope you feel better.
I like how you don’t edit out your happy little accidents
Man you are on the spot great tight player

Cool video Robert! Hope you feel better soon. And how about some John Norum / Key Marcelo tricks for a future lesson?
Another great video cheers Rob, helping us mere mortals get a step closer to the genius of EVH.
Get well soon! Congratulations on the upcoming 500k!

Can you cover Randy Rhoads' techniques, riffs, solos, etc.?

Great tutorial Congratulations on 500k!
Excellent! I always start off our sound check with the opening chords to Somebody get me a Doctor.
Great quick lick tip. Thanks!
Hell yeah Rob, I've been following you for forever. And I've learned so much watching your videos.
Question: do you use an amp or some specific digital amp sound to get that kind of tone ? Effects (Phaser, Flanger ?) digital ones ? THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR 🎸🎶MOTIVATION !
Slight delay/reverb with a phaser at 180ms is a good start point.
Hope you feel better soon Robert? It would be cool if you did something on "Mick Mars"?
The unsung guitar hero, that so many know, yet pay him so little attention! Thanks dude...
