Yeah I do that too, forget about the b5 hiding out to the left - I always use the one in the pentatonic “box” or as you slide out of it. Guilty! You are right about him mixing up the minor major. All those notes off to the left (fret 11) are the 3 6 2 and b5, respectively hanging out to the left of position 1’s “box”. Clever use of them. But if I tried using them I wouldn’t sound right. 😂. This guy on the internet Martin Hury calls it the Hybrid scale. I use it in blues jams but not rock. Eddie played what he felt. We miss you Eddie! Thanks for this excellent video!
First time I heard Van Halen I was skipping school one of my mates had an 8 track tape player with Van Halen 's first on playing Eruption. I was an instant convert . Loved Eddie's play ever since. He was one of a kind.
5:30 lick you can just use your middle finger for the 2nd note on the 1st string, instead of using the point finger for both. It's much easier and you get the same sound!
so many people pull apart his tone and make multiple vids about it and you just plug into your marshall and rip......makes me laugh.......and you play EVH right on mark
A lot of the tone on the records was studio work. I don't know why so many people are atimate about copying his tone exactly down to every detail. The room your playing in effects tone quite a bit, so close enough is good IMO.
The reason me n everyone wishes we could afford an over biased plexi is because Eddie’s clean playing is below mediocre- best of both worlds anyone? Anyone can practice swing/groove picking and master them
I think your Frankenstein may have a grounding issue. I realize there’s a loud amp with a lot of gain going on, but I think I’m also hearing a ground issue when you are not holding the strings. It’s a pretty easy repair.
Nope, that is the transformers in the cranked marshall. If you have never DIMED a plexi then it might be startling how noisy and buzzy they are; take it from me, I’ve been cranking plexi’s for nearly a decade and every one I have owned has buzzed exactly like his….(also they can smell bad, the smell of burning electronics, every old one I have had, which is a fair few, has stunk up my studio when cranked….one blew the transformer and shot a fireball and smoked when it died…)
@@Peter_Stoops Yeah I get that, but I was also hearing the buzz escalate in volume as he let go of the strings, which to me says the bridge is not properly grounded.
@@raoulduke8382 no electronics are 100% grounded, there is always some amount of escaping current, hence with a powerful enough meter you can find an eddy current on the most “closed” (shielded) of closed loops. Every guitar I’ve ever plugged into a cranked plexi hummed, including ground hum when you take your hands off the strings or make contact with the bridge or the tremolo springs. Those exact same guitars are DEAD QUIET thru my Friedmans and Soldanos….the plexi raises the amplifies the noise floor to the point where the smallest .01% noise is LOUD - so much so I refuse to use them live…I did a gig with a 20w plexi into a ua ox-box, dimed the plexi on the treble channel - it buzzed, local police radio came thru the amp, cell phones came thru the amp, just like in the old Hendrix and Zeppelin bootlegs……THE TONE WAS KILLER THOUGH😍😝😍😝
Given that it's making noise only when he lets go means the ground is connected. If it still buzzed when he touched then it would indicate a broken ground connection between the bridge and electronics.
HE IS THE KING! THE FULL PACKAGE! There are shredders faster than him but i find his solos were tons more expressive than anybody else. Who will be the next full package who can play and WRITE great music that guitarists want to learn how to pay, and non players just enjoy the party vibe of his fret wizardry? 🤔
l learned 7 note modals first, so I don't see things as some warped penatonic. i play more in harmonic minor that minor pentatonic per se, but penatonic is your cord tones in any key, so you need to be familiarized with it for resolve.
I hit the blues notes a lot because the first scale shape I ever learned was the Blues Scale, and I abused that scale for YEARS. When I finally really, really learned the minor patterns up and down the neck (thanks to your course!!), I still throw in the blues notes every now and then. 😁
I think Eddie visualised the pentatonic and other scales as superimposed on the chromatic scale. so there were no 'wrong notes' ; just passing notes from one to another scale, if you are thinking chromatically.
"You know, kinda like Doctor's and lawyer's. They're still practicing, they haven't figured it out yet." You forgot the best part of that quote. Don't worry I fixed it. 😂😂

ROBERT: I know maybe you don't review many budget guitars, but seeing this one reminded me, so I have a request… Would you please review the Firefly FFMN guitar with Eddie's Frankenstein finish? The FFMN is the "Musicman" body-style, not the Strat body version. I've been hearing so much about this specific guitar in online discussions and from guitar players I know who own a few Firefly's! And I mean it's even being praising it OVER OTHER Firefly FFMN guitars! Two of them even said to me; "It's the best Firefly guitar ever made!" Again, this is even over others of the same model Firefly (the FFMN). Also, they're saying it's way better than the Strat-body versions of the Firefly's with Eddie's Frankenstein paint job (finish). So I'd be really curious to see if your opinion matches with these comments. Unless you did and I'm just stupid and missed it? 😆
I sure enjoy you. Funny how high your voice is , I picture a deep tone. But... The good news , I would know your voice immediately if I heard it. Your a very special person 😌. Great teacher.
Eddie took his 1st guitar lesson at 5 years old. The teacher cut the lesson short and sent him home with a note saying..... "We were 30 minutes into the lesson when your kid came up with a lick he calls "Eruption"...."I just can't keep up with him", "Good luck".
I've been trying to cop Eddie's licks since 1980 and I've learned that even though my left hand is fairly slow it's my right hand that is crucial to achieving accuracy and producing that tone if you're going to play super loud you're going to have to learn how to mute...truth
Dude, you are BETTER than Eddie! At times, he was sloppy, depending on his state of inebriation. I am 80 now, and saw VH many times. Over many years. Sometimes overrated. Just saying.
I really hate you Robert: everytime you publish some EVH related video, you force me to stop every (EVERY! )other activity, to Open your Channel and catch some new Eddie's trick... 🥹 What about your ibz give away? Who is the lucky winner? (Just to know...I live in Europe so I think that it is Impossible to get any kind of giveaway from the US). Thanks for your video. 👋

Eddie’s techniques will always be a piece of musical history
Definitely one of the best guitar teachers for learning cool shit!.. thanks Rob!.. you friggin rock bud!
Robert got the Van Halen tone down to a science 100 percent
Love your unique insights on Eddie's playing style. And your energy!

needs to be a little dryer but very very close
That’s all it is really. Just a plexi and some effects.

What he did with his hands was more important than the gear. Right on man.

It's ground hum from no shielding. I had a cheap squier Tele that did this and completely fixed it with copper tape.

That boosted Plexi sounds amazing under your fingers

That's a fun saying but it's 100% incorrect, Theory used in that instance doesn't mean theoretical, just like scientific theory...

Thanks man and I’m going to fine tune my tone a bit more and do an Eddie tone video
May I ask what gauge of strings you’re using there?
Hey Robert, thanks for kicking ass, as usual, you’re awesome!
What comes after the OX Box? Your desktop monitors? Thanks again! 🤟🏼🎸
Thanks Greg. After the ox it's just into my interface for recording.
Thanks for the new course, Rob! I'll be digging into that tonight!
Awesome tutorial dude!
He broke all the rules and made his own.

EXCELLENT Video. OUTSTANDING Guitar Work.
Hey Robert, question for you, who taught Eddie how to play guitar? Self taught? Did he take any lessons growing up?
Eddie took his 1st guitar lesson at 5 years old. The teacher cut the lesson short and sent him home with a note saying.....
"We were 30 minutes into the lesson when your kid came up with a lick he calls "Eruption"...."I just can't keep up with him", "Good luck".

Thanks so much!!! and welcome :)
Excellent episode.
Rob, do you do any EVH lessons I can purchase? Please?!
Oh dang, I always thought that one of those bends was a whammy also. Learn something new everyday!
Eddie ear and hand cordination was alien tech....he was wired different
I'd love to see an EVH-off / collaboration between you and Liquid Charlie!
How come I didn’t get email about this course???
Sorry about that. We've sent 4 so far. Wonder if it went to your junk folder by mistake
Your technique, though. Your fingers barely touch the fretboard. I love it.

Do it, they’re awesome
Great work!!

You deserve over 1 million followers Robert!!!
Great Video. Cool.
Love the EVH content!!
You got some good Eddie chops. Very nice
Thanks
Great video
Eddies still taking us to school!
That was a dope ass lesson!!! You have me ate the fuck up with Eddie right now !! I'm currently listening to Van Halen 2 , I can't stop it!
"I'm not Eddie."
I've never heard Robert sound so sad before. ;)
Nice!!!! hey who won that guitar give away????
He was brilliant as a guitarist. I will leave it at that
👍
Eddie was da man!!
I’m not Eddie - proceeds to diddly diddly diddly. Uh - you may be
I have broken the pentatonic. Mostly by chance lol
Sometimes on purpose
👍🏻
He was an Eric Clapton fan.
There are no rules.
“Promise me a million times you’ll never do another rule!”
Natural born guitar god?
Does your mum brush your hair?
That guitar seems to be incredibly noisy.
Ha that would be the 100 watt amp sitting right behind me on 10
He’s surrounded by electronics and the amp is dimed and boosted.
