  • Cab ride on an Anglia Railways class 153 on the East Suffolk line from Lowestoft to Ipswich. Interesting mix of semaphore, colour light and radio signalling on the route.
No commentary just ambient cab noise.
There are a lot of farm crossings which confuse matters and have not included in the titleing please forgive me if any crossings are miss labelled.
Oops yes l have spelt Lowestoft wrong in the title, but too late l've uploaded it now !

    Nice to watch this footage.
Between 1954 & 1965 we used to take 2 weeks holiday in Lowestoft, sometimes travelling by train, sometimes in my Grandfathers Bedford Dormobile.
Overnight (starting around midnight) from Sheffield Victoria on a Manchester newspaper train. Arriving in Yarmouth at Vauxhall, walking over to South Town around 6.30am to catch the Lowestoft train.
The link to the video is that the return journey one year involved travelling this route to Beccles as I think there were PW works on the direct line to Yarmouth. At Beccles we reversed and travelled to Yarmouth via Somerleyton Bridge? All the while I tried to convince myself we were going for another 2 weeks holiday in Lowestoft, (I was only 10 years old at the time, or younger!)
As well as the clickety clack I used to love following the telegraph wires, dipping down then up again.
    Happy days.

Must have been via St Olave's, not Somerleyton!

Its funny how sounds bring back memories from long ago, the sound made by these tracks is a rare experience now but in my childhood it was common and it meant - holidays! 😄

Darsham Station has a butcher's shop on the platform At Christmas time, there are a number of white boxes on the platform with customer's names. This will be the Christmas Club collecting their turkeys.

Good piece of history here. Glad they recognised that double track Saxmundham-Halesworth wasn't enough capacity, and the 2nd platform line at Beccles was reinstated when the line was resignalled. The various sqawks from the cab when exchanging tokens was memorable!
IIRC when Sprinters replaced heritage DMUs there were problems transmitting tokens at Westerfield and the stopping point had to be moved down the platform; something to do with the location of the train aerial.

Good effort but this is so fuzzy, even on 720p . I guess some of the old Video stuff just won't work digitised. All the best

Thanks for your comment, yes as you say old video does not transfer well in the digital world.

@@macstracks8860 has the northern section of the route been redoubled since this video? The trains seem to pass at Beccles now rather than Halesworrth.

Beccles station had a loop added some ten years ago when colour light signalling replaced radio token on the line. Still single line each side of Beccles.

Thanks. The line I grew up with, hearing the trains coasting down the descent north into Woodbridge echo up to my bedroom window. Any idea of the date of filming?
