Excellent video, so nice to travel the line with the sun behind you. So much more detail to be seen.
@foxstrangler thank you
Great video. Living at Gidea Park know the early part well. Love seeing the passing loops. My grand father was a driver on this line. Steam then diesel. Retired in 1968
@CinemaShow-ok5vw Thanks for watching and I bet it is a lot different now to what he remembers from when he went over it
@CinemaShow-ok5vw I lived in Gidea Park for 32 years. The former Railstore Depot (formerly a tarpaulin factory) adjacent to the Up Main just beyond the station and opposite the carriage sidings, was the original terminus from Bishopsgate.
I am enjoying this. Thank you to everyone who made this video possible. Great piece of Friday night viewing. 😊
@andrewhollway231 thank you for watching, it's just me doing it, recording the routes as I drive over them and adding the route info and editing in my own time because I found there was a lack of good route videos for the Anglia area for route learning so every chance I have to capture a route am going to take it as the feed back I've had is great
Lovely journey, very enjoyable indeed! "Thank You"!!
Thanks for marking each station. Wish others would do this 👍
I thought it would be handy thank you
Thanks for posting , best cab ride I've seen of the LV - Norwich main line , great weather , nice hum from the diesel engine and cruising along at 60 mph
@kevinsylvester770 that's great to know thank you
I have done most routes in Anglia, on a passenger train, even the freight lines to Sizewell (Leiston), Middleton Towers, Kings Lynn Docks, Kings Lynn Harbour, Wisbech and the triangle at March, North Elmham (before it was the Mid Norfolk), Fen Drayton (St Ives, Cambridgeshire), Felixstowe South Terminal, Felixstowe Beach and North Terminal, Thameshaven, Pig's Bay (beyond Shoeburyness, yes, beyond !), Gas Factory to Bow, Forest Gate to Barking, and even the crossover from Platform 2 to Platform 1 at Romford, but even I have not done the engineers during at Romford / Chadwell Heath ! Well done !
Thank you hopefully I will be doing a short on Romford Engineers Sidings soon on how to exit and enter
Great footage. I was travelling on this line a couple of weeks ago for the first time in almost a year, didn't realise there was a new station being built.
Yeah it's not a small one they are planning on 3 platforms and for it to be finished next year
@@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck Yeah I noticed that they completely changed the track layout rather than just adding the platform. Looks like they're expecting it to be very well used.
Thanks for posting👏👍

Steam engines and East Anglia in my blood.
@geoffhalstead Thank you for watching
It's amazing to think that the railway from London Liverpool Street to Norwich was built in a few short years by pure muscle in the mid 1800s.
The cutting through Brentwood up the Brentwood Bank is one of the steepest inclines in the country, and all dug by hand.
I can still remember the sound of the Britannia's barking their way up the Brentwood Bank to Norwich. I live 200 yards from the cutting, and you now maybe lucky to hear the purr of a Class 66, hauling an intermodal rake, powering up the line to Felixstowe docks.
I did not know that thank you
@rogeremberson6464. Occasionally a Britannia still climbs Brentwood Bank ! I had 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" a few years back from Liverpool Street to just south of Norwich (she failed, as she was thrashed very hard, poor old girl). There are several videos on RUclips, if you are interested.
I will have a look thank you
Yes, and pre-Beeching the GER and other companies had plastered the region with lines! Many of those long gone lines would be very useful these days, including the lines around Melton Constable (the Crewe of the East), and from Lowestoft to Gt Yarmouth. I can't help thinking that a direct serive to Gt Yarmouth from London would help re-genetate the town.
When I was route learning on this line back in the late 80’s I was riding up front with the driver (class 309-I liked them) going through ingatestone at about 90mph when the signal at the end of the platform suddenly changed from Green to red then back to green. The driver didn’t bat an eyelid. “Happens a lot” he said. Hopefully the signaling system is more reliable now!
I've not seen this happen on any of the routes I go over but I have seen it happen to a colleague of mine once before
Another great video, it's great to see parts of the railway we wouldn't normally see like Norwich goods yard and being in loops
@martyn6792 thank you am lucky because the train I drive is bottom of the list so I keep getting put out of the way of passenger trains
@@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck what train is it ? Same as you park next to in Norwich yard ?
No that was a ballast regulator but if you look for machine number DR73906 that is the one
@@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck Panther tamping machine
@@martyn6792 that's the one
Incredible light - really helps the HD. Thank you for the video.
You're welcome
Roughly where those sidings are used to be the Sidings for the wiring train at the OHL depot .
Great video and I saw nothing wrong with the description, they were easily read.
Am glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the feed back I think its a hit and miss subject regarding that in which I wont be able to make everyone happy
Great video really well edited well done
@BrianDavie-it6bq Thank you
5:10 I've wondered what these random bits of rail are in between the rails? I've fallen down the rabbit hole of watching these train videos and keep seeing them on all sorts of tracks.
@Athanlmmortal Hi and thank you for watching, the rails you see in the 4 foot (in the middle of the track) are scrap rail waiting to be taking away or new ones waiting to be put in as the safe walking routes are meant to be the CESS (to the side of the track) they would become a trip hazard if they was placed there so it is safer to place them in the 4 foot I hope this answers your question
Brilliant day and trip, thank you! Sounds like a good old fashioned clutch and manual gearbox? Put me right please?
@drdoolittle5724 you are correct its a 3 speed Plasser 08 Unimat DR73906
Hello. Since becoming a resident of the Waveney Valley 3 years ago, I've developed an interest in East Anglia's railways, past & present, so your videos are of great interest to me.
I guess you have become very well acquianted with the various loops off the GE main line whilst driving locos with a top speed of 60mph!
Would it be possible to add some explanation of the various signs you pass?
Thanks, Stephen
Hi Stephen thank you for watching I don't think it will be possible to add that information into the videos at this time as I don't think I will be able to fit all the information in without losing the picture quality sorry
What a chillout of a ride in glorious sunshine. Thank you. One more request if I may(?) For those unfamiliar with the East Anglian network (shamefully that includes me), could you add a note of where the lines go that veer away from the mainline we're on? (Please).
The first line, off to the right after Romford Station, is the Overground line to Emerson Park and Upminster, now known as the "Liberty Line".
After Romford, the next junction is at Shenfield, here the line to Southend Victoria diverges, left and right. The next junction is at Witham, here the line to Braintree diverges left. The next is at Marks Tey, here the line from Sudbury converges from the left. The next is Colchester, here the Clacton line diverges left and right. The next is at Manningtree, here the Harwich line diverges right. The next is Ipswich where the East Suffolk Line diverges right. After Stowmarket, the line to Bury St Edmunds diverges left. Hope that helps !
Thanks for posting
@jessicemorgan3073 no problem
I've often travelled this line as a passenger, but to see it from the cab on such a beautiful day is an amazing treat! Thank you. What is the reason for the journey?
You are welcome and the machine had been working in the London area over the weekend and was being moved up to Norwich for work during the week.
@@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck Thank you for taking time to reply. I'm glad I discovered this channel.
Can you explain why there are no trap points at the down end of the loop at Witham?
Surely, there's nothing to stop an errant train from proceeding onto the main line.
I don't know the reason why there isn't one there but there is a TPWS at L779 which is the signal at the end of the loop and if a train passes the signal at danger (SPAD Signal Passed At Danger) it will automatically initiate a brake demand and stop the train.
@@AngliaCabRides-vv5ckThat sounds like the reason.

Great video was relaxing to watch, only wish i knew what you were driving & hauling, a few seconds would have made it perfect !!!
@russgladstone432 Thanks for watching and it was a 08 Unimat DR73906 named Panther but I will try and get a good photo of it before my next video and add it in at the start
With the information given below you can check it out on Google images.
Hi can i use abit of the video at Beaulieu Station to post on my RUclips
Thank you for asking yes you are welcome to
Nice video, even at 2x speed. Did they send you that way as there is less traffic than on the Lee Valley -Bishop's Stortford - Thetford line?
@Swaggerlot Its quicker than going round and up past bishop's Stortford, Also keeps me out of London and I believe there is more passing points but I might be mistaken as I don't sign round there yet
@@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck OK, I wasn't sure where you started out from before Romford. It wouldn't have been worth doubling back from Romford.
@@Swaggerlot Yeah I know what you mean but the machine was working the night before around Stratford area and was stabled when complete at Romford
Thanks
Nice video. One piece of constructive criticism is that the plain orange text noting stations, crossings, etc, is not very legible. I would suggest a drop-shadow on the text, or black outline, or something behind it so it is easier to read. Keep up the good work. I look forward to more videos!
Thanks for the feedback I will have a play around with my next one
Must be your eyes mate, they look perfectly clear to me.
I have no problem reading it.
Reads okay but maybe black background
@DanLoudShirts am using a new way to edit the clips so hopefully in my next one you will be able to see the text more clearly
Why is the speed limit higher for DMUs compared to EMUs once you got on the Main Line at Romford?
EMUs can travel at the higher speed it's just that I didn't want to overload the screen with information as there is a list of which ones can in the sectional appendix and identify the signs like they are help with learning the route
I remember a very much earlier video in the opposite direction with a class 87 to Liverpool Street. I suppose this loco is tied up in that dead end until that rake is either removed by another loco or reversed out on completion?
It's a track machine, which is double ended. Probably similar to the one on the adjacent track at Norwich.
That would have been a Class 86, Sir.
The class 86's (not 87's) on this route operated in push-pull mode. This utilised a fixed formation with a locomotive at one end and a driving brake second open (DBSO) at the other. When driving from the DBSO the loco at the rear (pushing) was controlled by digital signals from the cab. This alleviated any need for uncoupling and running round at terminus stations. If you search DBSO you will find more information about these vehicles.
Why cut the exchange between driver and signaller? That's the interesting bit.
@user-rq3pf7nd4c I had to do this as a driver because it only takes one person to report me for the littlest of thing so it is safer for me to just cut that bit out and it saves alot of hassle
The signaller does not know that the conversation is being recorded, thus if it was broadcast all over the internet you would probably be contravening privacy regulations. Also would you be happy knowing that your conversations were going out all over the world for all and sundry to hear.
This route is signalled by Liverpool Street IECC as far as south of Colchester, and by Colchester PSB beyond. All conversations with IECCs and PSBs are recorded anyway ! But I agree with your privacy rational.
very nice
Thank you
For a track machine has hardly any rattles like some I have heard and fast
@philipalldred333 it's the go-pro that makes it look comfortable but trust me it's not
Engineering clearly didn’t do much with the brakes😂
jesus. !! i think the brakes want a reline 😒
Yeah they do like to make a noise
can you imagine if cars and trucks etc had to slow to 15mph just to change lane...................................
@JL-rx6hl completely different machine's/Vehicles so you cant really comparer the both of them as the speeds are set over points for safety
