Can't wait to make my way to Key West. Been living in Southwest Florida for a a dozen years. Love to fish the middle grounds or elbow in the Gulf of Mexico -= but have NEVER been to Key West. I need to get down there and fish and/or spear with Mr Aaron Young. Thank You very much for all of the wonderful content and your 'Hippy' attitude . It is a refreshing change from the typical 'red neck' for lack of a better term fisherman that one regularly encounters. 😎✌

Hey Aaron. I was happy to see you only taking one claw. Although, Florida allows both claws… if they are legal. When you look at the mortality statistics of Stone Crabs with both claws removed, I don’t know why Florida allows it. However, it shows how much you look at the big picture by the way you treat our environment. Keep it up. You have much to be proud of.

Aaron I enjoyed the new camera view it reminded me Jacques Cousteau from the 1970's. I also might suggest to have a floating camera that is on the surface facing down maybe on a line from your boat floating above you.. And used like the Arial drone you use for above views while you are harvesting shell fish. Just a humble suggestion. Giving us a surface view while you are in 5 to 6 feet of water like in this video. You are clearly skilled at fishing those crabs out and I like that you take great care in removing the produce (one Claw). Like when you sit the camera down on the bottom and we see you doing your work, and this video is really cool with the new camera. You all Rock.

they will go deeper in the hole alot of times if they see you coming, depends on the crab. and typically trying to get behind them and scoop them out. Wow, great video that brings back quite a few great stone crab catching memories. It's been about 40 years since I have actually caught my own but as a teenager we used to do really well. Miss those times. Once I returned to the state of Florida after a 5 year absence I became less of a fan of Florida shellfish. Stone claws, florida lobster, florida blue crab, oysters.. Something about the warm Florida waters or their forage but they really lack the rich flavor of shellfish caught in cooler northern waters. Anyone else agree or disagree with my observation.

European crustations at least are ""soft or spongy"" after they shed hence the thin shell they thicken it over the time till they shed next , the reason they are spongy is because they fill their own meat with water to inflate the size they are before they ""set"" the new shell, again only talking for cold water species but we have to wait 3-4 weeks after they shed before they are worth eating .

Another cool video Aaron. We used to hunt for stone crabs as kids but were not as graceful as you, have been pinched many times. On a previous video you mentioned only taking one claw but i saw a video recently from a professional stone crab guy in Miami explaining how it is better to take both claws if legal as crabs with only 1 claw get in more battle and lose/die. Also noted if you can only take one claw try not to take cutter claw as it is what they primarily use to eat. Also said if both claws are gone they can eat without them. He showed several 1 claw crabs in his pots who dies, apparently from fighting with the other crabs in the pot. Makes sense to me.

glad you enjoyed it! and I just go with what I see and observe. I never find crabs with no claws, I often find crabs with one. I understanding the fighting thing but if a crab with no claws crawls into one of their traps, theres no way it has a better chance than a crab with one claw. I've done a little bit a trapping here and there, and it wasn't common to find crabs killing each other in traps. but thats just my findings.
