- Kelly Bishop singing 'At the Ballet,' from the broadway show 'A Chorus Line'. Kelly is known from her amazing part on Gilmore Girls:DDDD

The notion of "Sheila's" or Kelly Bishop's character NOT being a good singer is exactly the point. If you know the part, she is an aging "hoofer" trying out for yet another role where she gets turned down. Her time has long passed. Her voice is perfect for the part of the wise-cracking, cynical, but honest & vulnerable Sheila, who represents all those "older hoofers" out there who just want to work because they love the theater and aren't ready to hang up their dancing shoes!
Kevierae exactly! Kelly made the character!
I’ve always thought this is one of the best song from the production. It’s certainly my favorite.
Perfectly stated
Listening to Kelly Bishop’s audiobook right now and had to look this up. 🩰 So beautiful. 💕
Me too!
Me too!!
Kay Cole..... that crescendo.... one of the great moments in theater history. What a special and rare voice.
Christopher Gambol yup...and we all figured Jay broke the mold for Maggie, but this summer I saw Natalie Livingston steak the show in, if all places, Kittery, Maine.
I hope the New York City Center Ballet takes a listen to Natalie and auditions her for their Maggie in July of 2019.
More than one Broadway ACL fan was in attendance and we could not believe our ears.
Not only can she sing, but she can dance, too! And this song was actually written about her life- she is singing about herself! That's what makes it even more amazing.
There weren’t too many dry eyes in that room and I can understand why. This song gets me every time
All three of them are breathtaking.
I had tears rolling down my cheeks for Kay Cole's monologue.
This is what real Broadway is.
ladies and gentleman, this is how acting is done. The audience was spellbound
As soon as Kelly starts the entire cast is pulled in and back in the show
This is such a beautiful, emotional song. I loved seeing the shots of the other cast members watching on and being emotionally moved. - even though they had probably seen them perform this hundreds of times before.
That's Kay Cole and she's the bomb!!! I saw Pam Klinger who played Maggie in the movie also play Maggie on Broadway in '87 and she held that big note for ages and filled the whole theatre with that incredible voice though Kay Cole just brings you to tears.
This performance is far and away better than the current Broadway revival. How I wish I had seen the original Broadway production.
This is magic! Yes - theatre history! And I love the chorus line sitting behind them and the camera picking out several of them. You can see the many levels of response there. On one level they're performing their characters as they did onstage - in the background, responding with emotion; on another level they're together again for the first time in...how many years? On yet another, the fact that this show, this piece, is deeply personal to each of them in a way outsiders would never - COULD never - understand and.... well, it's magic to with them at this moment, to be with Sammy Williams when he dries the tears from his eyes. AT THE BALLET can be - has been - performed by myriads of people. But not like these people.
@Kevierae And not to mention that Kelly Bishop IS the character. The show was written in workshops based on these dancers' lives, and it's actually her story - as for all of them. Which, along with the amazing artistry, is makes this song so powerful...
No one came closer to the original cast. Ever.
It is late on a Saturday night and I was feeling sad and lonely during this lockdown and then I found this. Those three women created more magic with that one song and reminded me how true beauty and talent can light up the world. Thank you so much.
Kelly Bishop! Wow! A singer as well as an actor!! Hehe you go lorelai's mom!! love your tune, w00t!!
Wot a brilliant song. still makes me cry after 38 years.
this is amazing. i am engrossed in the reactions of the cast. you can tell they are all reliving a seminal moment in their lives, that they were and always will be part of something great. that's why the revivals will never always fall short.
it's hard to bear how beautiful this is...
Such a great song performed heart wrenchingly. Gorgeous
I saw the original show in 1979. I took my daughter to see it...she and her little girlfriend always danced and sang the songs and when we went to see it; she had actually picked up on a few of the dances that were in the show....
anyone else here after reading kelley bishop’s memoir?
yes ❤
Yes:) I love it!
WOW. On an ACL binge and this is such a pleasant surprise to find. This song never fails to cause tears to well up in my eyes. This clip is no exception.
Best performance they ever did of this song, you can feel the emotions :')
I was unaware of this musical until I saw the movie. Of course, I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it. I didn't think anyone could do the song better than the women in the movie. Man, was I WRONG.......I would have given anything to have been there, experiencing a performance of that magnitude in a small studio like that, as opposed to in a theater. I'm a 55 year old man, and get tears in my eyes every time I hear this song. This version had me bawling...lol Great post
This specific performance is a masterpiece. And it’s done with only a piano and drums. Incredible!!
A bunch of us got caught up in the craze. It was around 1976 (so long ago) and we found a dance class by one of those aging hoofers at a local Open Exchange. Great guy, marvelous dancer, but couldn't sing a note. Not only taught us a routine, but shared a lot about what he experienced. He described exactly what you've written, here. Now that I think about it, we started with about 30 people, all amateurs, ended up with 5 of us by the end of class, some 8 weeks later.
Bravo...Kay Cole was and is and amazing talent. She should be working every season, that's how incredible she is, as was this whole original cast.
Reading my previous comment back I want to be sure that anyone reading understands that I mean that Kay is quite emotional and heartfelt.A beautiful vocalist!!
I've seen a lot of Broadway musicals over the years...in NYC when I lived there and in national touring companies during my time spent in other cities (Dallas, San Francisco, L.A.) and bar none, A Chorus Line remains my absolute favorite and "At the Ballet" remains one of the very, very best modern-era songs from a musical. Period.
Stunning...awesome...perfection! What a treat to be able to see this extraordinary performance of this fantastic song (my favorite from the show as well). Thank you so much for posting!
All three stories were Kelly Bishop's. She won the Tony Award for her performance in the Featured Actress category.

WTF is wrong with you?
Do you have any other clips of the episode?? They entire original cast appeared on the Phil Donahue show just before it closed in 1990. I would love any other clips!!!
Wow, they sound exactly the same as in 1975. Excellent!!!
Note: Try, if you can help it, not to dump ALL your criticism on the revival. There were other companies that followed this original during its fifteen year run that no one ever bitched about. Just enjoy the show, huh?
Now THATS how it's supposed to be done! Wow! Where the Hell is the movie clip?!
lol she can still sing this song she has song it to me it was one of those aqward moments after she sang it she played the tape with this piece it was wierd other then she sang her part she sang the other parts too... i have met alot of the chorus line pple and alot of them are opposites of the roles they played and YES This is about her Life and what her childhood
I realize you wrote this six years ago, but that is what the way it is on the Internet: comments live on forever as new people read them for the first time years after they were written. Unfortunately, given the horrible spelling, grammar and punctuation, I didn't understand a word of what you said. I'm sad about that, too, because I wanted to understand your point, as parts of your comments seemed exciting. I know commenting on the writing skills of people on the Internet is not a popular thing to do, but rules of English grammar exist for a reason - so people can be understood and ideas can be exchanged and we can all grow by learning from the minds and experiences of others. Sadly, I know nothing of your thoughts, and those were thoughts I truly wanted to understand.
@@JoanJetty Wow,you must have a lot of friends.
Kay Cole is the bomb.
I justr posted the entire show, in 7 parts.
I have a VHS copy of the entire show if you're interested.
Kay Cole rocks my socks!

Nope Baldwin. Maggie is Donna Macechnies story, read her book
Nevermind - 1990 :)
Hmm, that's a good question. Probably I mean the rest of the cast was there. Sorry I can't answer your question

@StupidMaddie137 Damn right!
i know, i love this show, the revival is just as amazing:D n sorry no, all i have i've uploaded:[ who are you going to send it too?
I have seen this show in Seattle, SF, LA. and NYC; something akin to 12 or 13 times. This number, "Music and the Mirror", and the finale always(!) knock me out. (P.S. Hated the movie.)
I'm sorry, no i don't:[ but i wish i did, all i have is the other video i uploaded called 'The Phil Donahue Show (1990) - Kelly Bishop Interview'
Look at those audience members, they look terrified!
What year is this clip from?

no dont worry i dont like her voice either. Shes like talking the song and then when she does sing its off key
but the other ladies were amazing.
im sorry i cat believe im the only one who doesnt really like her voice
All three stories were Kelly Bishop's. She won the Tony Award for her performance in the Featured Actress category.
What do you mean? her personal story?
Passionate4Broadway yup. Her father cheating was hers. Her mother telling her that she's not pretty is hers too
Michael Bennett held "therapy" sessions with the actors and dancers, and they poured out their personal life stories. He paid them each $1 for their stories. Then he created the characters in A Chorus Line based on their own stories. Many were playing out their fellow actors' life stories with them on the stage.
Baldwin Wiggins But that is crazy. She's gorgeous.
Actually Maggie was Donna McKechnie , who like Kelly was the product of a bad marriage
