- There comes a time when we need more storage for our videos and photos so I bought a new WD 4TB My Passport Portable Hard Drive With Password Protection from Amazon.
Timestamps below.

It was as cheap as chips considering the amount of space it has on it.
To me 4 terabytes is a huge amount of storage and it boggles my mind that we have things like this in my lifetime. When I started in computers back in the last century. 1 megabyte was huge!
My how times have changed. If you produce a lot of videos and photos then you know how fast your space runs out.
Getting more storage frees up so much more space on my laptop which means it works a hell of a lot faster. Plus I'm not distracted by a desktop full of folders.
This drive is compatible with Xbox PS4 and PC.

Great review Michael! I also like WD products. I purchased one years ago and it's solid as a rock. Still going strong. Very useful to have an external backup and free up your computer hard-drive as well. It's amazing how much the prices have dropped. Like you said, your 4TB cost less than the 1TB lol :)
Yep these type of hard drives have come way down in price just recently.
I'm guessing that with the rise of cloud storage demand has fallen?
Also SSD storage is much faster but is still very expensive.
Yikes 4TB! I'm remembering my first hard drive...1 megabyte! I thought that was massive. 😂👍
Stay safe mate. 😷👍
@@molometer Yeah, I agree. For example, I get 1TB free with my Microsoft 365 subscription which comes very handy. Yes, SSD is still quite expensive. LOL yeah, back then, 1MB sounded like a lot :)
A great video Michael. My videos, photos and songs are filling up my PCs fast! I might just click your link on this as it is a great price.
Good day Simon, yep making videos sure does eat up the storage and it slows the PC or laptop down. This hard drive is cheap as chips at the moment.
I cleaned up my laptop and moved everything to the new hard drive and now the laptop is running just like a rocket.
Great job showing the drive! Not too many reviews on this particular WD.
Thanks for leaving a comment. These 4tb hard drives are pretty cheap at the moment and we all need a lot more storage these days. Glad you found the video useful. 😋👍
That is a nifty bit of kit right there!
It sure is. Just swallowed up a ton of stuff off of my laptop. The laptop is a i7 but was slowing down.
Now it's bouncing around like a spring chicken again. 📷👍
Not getting rid of anything is great advice.
Yep we never know what may be useful content in the future. Save as much footage as possible is a good thing to do.
Thank you for your review! After watching your video, I decided to buy 2 of these WD 4TB My Passports at my local Costco and I'm so glad that I did! I have one for my laptop and one for my PS5 and they work very well and transfer data very fast! Many thanks! :)
Hi Natalie and thank you for taking the time to leave your warm comments. I'm also impressed with the speed of these hard drives. Just brilliant 😷👍😋
I'm 3 years late to this party (video). I'm looking into adding more external storage to my computer, so it's time to browse and research options. I have a WD MyBook 2Tb that I bought about 10 years ago and it's still running like brand new. Never had a problem with it, but compared to these SSD's and enclosures, the MyBook HDD is huge and requires its own power source. These SSD's are night and day different from years gone by. I've always trusted WD.
How cute, 1 year ago, 4TBs was a monster. Right now I own a 16TB, and for me it is a monster. How fast things changes.
Yep technology improves at a fairly predictable rate. I wonder where we'll get to next year?
I've used less than a quarter of my 4tb hard drive so far which is good enough to get a few more years usage before I have to upgrade again. 👍🏼
@@molometer I bet 16TB will be our 16MB USB drives from our 2000s.
I owned a 2TB that it took 4 years to fill up, and to transfer my data to my 16TB took 1 day, many little file sizes made the speed worst. So best is use an special tool or just always zip mini files to improve transfer speeds in the future
Pretty nice video thanks..... I'm from Libya 🇱🇾
Thank you Mohamed, glad you found it useful.
Take great care of the usb port, if it gets damaged, your drive is dead. It doesn't have a sata hdd inside, it has custom electronic board with just a usb 3 connector. So if you have important data, think about this and either have more copies or get a laptop hdd and external case with usb 3, to have same setup. This way you can put the laptop drive in a computer in case of case failure.
Thanks for your comments. It's always a good idea to have multiple backup's of our data.
The USB is as robust on this device as any other piece of similar technology but if it is abused and damage occurs it's also easy and cheap to fix.
Thanks a lot for the video sir. Just asking about the level of security when setting password , is it encrypted as using veracrypt for exemple ( is the password strong) ???
Hi Mustapha, use a mixture of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers (8 or more) will give you a very strong password which you can encrypt.
Or you can use a strong third party password generator like Google's password system. Either way works.
Hope this helps 👍
@@molometer thanks a lot for the answer, really love that .
Thanks for a great review, straight to the point. I've just purchased my first hard drive, the 1tb version and set it up on my laptop. I've noticed when I'm dragging the files across they are being copied and are also remaining on the laptop. Ie they are being copied instead of imported. What am I doing wrong?
Hi John and thanks for your comments and question.👍
Re your question. Two options.
1. If you select/highlight and drag and drop the files. A copy will be moved to the external hard drive. (Handy for backups)
2. Select and right mouse click on the file/files you want to 'export/move' to the external drive and a menu will pop up with the option to 'move' the files to the HD.
This second method will move the files without leaving copies on your computer. 😋👍
Hope that helps?
@@molometer excellent, thank you for your prompt response. I will try again tomorrow. 👍😀💯
@@JoJo-xz6fw Glad to be of assistance. You may notice a speed improvement with your computer when you make some space.
My laptop is running like brand new since I cleared everything off that wasn't essential.😋👍
@@molometer I hope so. That's the reason I purchased a hard drive to hopefully speed up my laptop. My only concern is if the hard drive fails and I lose all my photos 🤔
@@JoJo-xz6fw Yep it can be an unnecessary worry sometimes.
If it's any consolation I've only ever had one hard drive failure in 40+ years of working with computers which is incredible but true.
I was still able to recover the data from the dead drive. There are plenty of recovery options so do try not to worry about it to much. It will be fine and your computer will thank you. 😋👍
Thanks so much for this vedio
You're welcome glad you found it helpful.👍
Hi, just quick question: I know it stores pice videos etc, so once you send to wd.....you have to delite from your desktop what you just sent to wd? Cause i am out of space on my desktop. I am a little nervouse deliting my content! Thanks!
Hi Tyler, correct. Copy your photos, videos documents etc to the external hard drive and confirm that they are there and working properly.
If you're happy that the files have copied successfully onto the WD hard drive you can then delete them from your desktop. 👍
*****
As a extra safety precaution. Once you've copied the files to the external hard drive. Disconnect the WD hard drive from your computer and then delete the files on your computer.
Sometimes people forget to unselect the external drive and delete both copies at the same time!
It happens. So just take the WD drive off before deleting anything. 😋
@@molometer thanks very much!!🤞🙏👍
Would have been cool to see how the password feature works, setup and usage.
Buy one and find out. It's pretty basic tbh. 🤷♂️😂👍🏼
Hello Michael, is it USB 3.2? if yes, is it better than USB 3.1 and USB 3.0? is it more speedy? and generally, is it better than silicon power armor a75?
Hello Vahid, it's USB 3.2 generation 1 and it is very fast indeed.
It's a good solid hard drive I'm very happy with it. I've transferred everything off of my laptop which now works much faster.
It costs considerably less than the silicon a75.
Performance wise I wouldn't know? 👍
@@molometer Thanks for the reply Michael. What I want is more about damage and safely, because I have a bad memory with my previous hard drive, one day I connected it and it asked me to "format the drive". And I lost all my files. I afraid of this. I don't want this to happen to me again. Do you think I'll be happy with this one?
@@VahidTakro I've been very happy with my older WD 1TB drive for many years and the new 4TB is working perfectly.
If a drive asks you to format it. "Don't do it".
Just unplug it and try it again.
If it still asks you to format it you could get disk recovery software and run that first.
It will recover the data which you can move to another drive.
If fact even if you have formatted a drive it is still possible to recover the data. 👍
@@molometer Thanks a lot Michael! you're amazing. Your tips are very helpful. Are you on social networks like Instagram/Facebook? I'd like to add you there, where I am online the most.
also, there is a little different with this hard drive, and My Passport Ultra version, which is USB C, do you think if having USB C is much better than the one which My Passport has?
USB C is very much faster (10x-20x) than USB 3
Gen 1 but comes with a significantly higher cost.
If you are doing a lot of massive file transfers on a daily basis then the USB C makes more sense.
If on the other hand you are an average user that backs up or copies just a few files occasionally then the added speed is kind of irrelevant.
USB C may become more important in the future and will probably get cheaper too.👍
PS I don't use FB or Insta.
Hey Michael this hard drive works with USB 2.0?
Hi Syed, yes it works with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. 👍
Thank you for the good review. Just got one recently.
However, I've seen some (very few) reviews of people complaining that it stopped working in less than a year? I know that hard drives need to be handed carefully cause it has moving parts unlike ssd.
The thing I'm moving tons of movies/series to it and deleting them from my PC hard drive to have more storage. So if stops working I'll just lose it all.
Basically what I want to know is if you did have any problems with it yet? Video is a year old and is the exact same drive as mine (4tb)
Hi Nafa, the drive is working perfectly and I'm sure it will continue to work indefinitely.
Hard drives are quite simple devices and if you treat them right should last decades.
You're copying movies? That sounds very illegal? 😱😱😱😂🎸
@@molometer Nah these ones are legal ahah You earned a new subscriter for the very quick response and insightful video. Thank you! 👌
@@AllMenMustServe Welcome aboard Nafa, glad to be of assistance.
Have great holiday and see you in the new year. 👌👏👍😂
@@molometer Thank you. Wish you the same. See ya 👌
I purchased the 1 TB version of this same drive 6 years ago and it still works. Matter of fact it's the same as the 1 TB you just showed
Hello. Do you happen to know why mine says 18% installing. It has been this way for hours!! What can I do?
Unplug it and start installing again. If it still doesn't work it may need to be formatted.
Hello Michael my wd mypassport hard disk 4 tb vibrates, is it normal...? Or hard disk is a defect one
A small amount of vibration is normal and nothing to worry about. You will be able to feel it with your hand.
The platter is spinning at over 7000 rpm so they do vibrate a little.
Keep it on a flat surface if possible.
If it is vibrating enough so that you can actually see it moving then that's a bit excessive and may be defective?
Hope this helps? 😋👍
Can I plugg the hard drive into my ps5 to Watch movies once I formated it and also can I still set a password after I have formatted it
Yes you can plug it into any playstation or anything with a USB port. You can password protect it anytime too.
I record my playstation gameplay on my hard drive for uploading to my RUclips channel. 💯👍🏼
Does the external drive work just as well without downloading the software? I’m seeing a lot of reviews saying that it stops installing at 18%, and I’m wondering if I should return it or not. Thanks
Hi Nick, yes this hard drive works fine without the software download.
In the video you will see that I formatted the hard drive because I don't want that software collecting whatever data it wants?
Just plug it in and format it.
The included software is superfluous.
@@molometer great, thanks for the reply. Do I need to create shortcuts of files to transfer, or do I just use the original file? Cause I still plan on keeping them on my computer, as well, and I don’t know if it literally takes the file, or just makes a copy (as it should)
@@nick_decastro Hi Nick, yes just drag and drop the file onto the hard drive and it will make a copy as you would expect with copies in both locations.
There is also the 'move' function which would move the file off of your computer and onto the hard drive only but you probably know that already? 👍
I was looking for that password protection, how to set it... I didn't find it...
other than that, helpful... thanx.
When you first plug the hard drive in the option to make it password protected will appear. Just follow the steps 👍🏼
Do you have to connect to the Internet in order for u to set a password up
No you don't have to connect to the internet to up the password. The password software is loaded when you first plug it in. 💯👍🏼
Hi, gooday I'm not really good with technology stuff, but I would like to know if it's possible to upload movies on my passport 4 terabyte.Thanks.
Hi Chante, absolutely yes. You can store any digital media on these hard drives.
Films, photos audio etc.
if you get it and its install gets stuck at like 18% unplug it and plug it back in
The seal is so simple and easily replaceable. How do we know that it is not used?
Thanks for leaving the comments. As to the seal. It's unknowable 😂😂👍

Yes is the answer. 👍
@@molometer thank you sir.. Appreciate it
My pleasure. 👍
Does it always have to be plugged in to pc and wall outlet ?
Hi neverpanic, it doesn't need to be plugged into a wall outlet. It is powered by the laptop/desktop USB port where it is connected. Thanks for asking 👍🏼
Oh ok, thank you !
How do I use it as just storage from my pc
Hi Elizabeth, you can just plug it in and save your work to it. When you plug it in you will see the hard drives icon appear then you can drag your files to it. Hope this helps 👍🏼
What if you drop it? Say from any height, would it die on you and how could you recover the info if so?
Technology like this doesn't like being dropped from any height. You can get battle hardened hard drives etc but they are very expensive.
It is quite easy to recover data even from a fire damaged or water logged hard drive.
Did you drop one? 😋👍
@@molometer thank you for the response, no just trying to inform myself before getting one, that's something that'd happen to me though good to know.
I'm sure we've all been prone to mishaps with gear. I blew up a lamp recently while doing some soldering! 😂😂👍
It depends on the type of damage.
i got a new WD 4TB but unknowingly i deleted the my passport app which is in hard disk by default. now how can i get that. any link pls share
thank yu in advance
Hi Hariesh, you don't need the passport app to use the hard drive. It works fine without any of the supplied software.
If you still want to use the app you can download it from the Western digital website. Hope this helped?Let me know how you get on. 👍
I have only 18% installed and it's stuck. Any suggestions
How's it going, still stuck?
Simplest thing to do if you are stuck is to start again.
Will it work on a MacBook Air MACOS 10.5?
Yep it will work fine on any operating system. 👍
what happen if you share it when installing it? any idea? is it good for me or not if i share it?? please do answer my question
It's entirely your choice.
If you want to link all your social media website content you can.
However having it linked to websites that you don't control may be risky for letting in viruses and malware to your system.
I just use mine for offline storage.

I bought a 2nd hand WD My Passport Mac. Then I format it in Win10 NTFS. Then install the WD security software just as you mentioned (I have done it before many times too).
But the problem is, when I connect this My Passport, it opened an window, where it says, to open the WD software to unlock this drive. It does not give me the option directly to enter password.
Then when I open the WD Security software from the program menu, then it give me the option to enter password and then I can unlock the device. WHY? How can I resolve this issue?

Hi fadetoblack and thanks for asking. It's going great with no problems. I've used about a quarter of its capacity so far. Based on that rate it'll be a few years before it's full. 🎬🎥👍
@@molometer Do you think at this point. I should get a SSD for my Nvidia shield.
@@fadetoblack.- It depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to save live streams, gameplay etc the WD 4TB is more than capable with its USB3 speed port.
The other consideration is price. SSD's are much more expensive (for a good one) and the speed benefit of SSD's is of little matter in these type of scenarios.
Hope this helps 👨💻👍
@@molometer I’m just worried about longevity do you think I could get four years or five years out of the passport you’re using? There’s a lot of people out there that are saying that the quality of the older HD drives is no longer built soundly.

Hard drives are very durable in general. You will be able to store your data safely for years to come. Remember to back it up regularly and keep it refreshed.
Digital products can degrade over time but this is related to how they are stored and treated. Regular backups reduce degradation. 👨💻👍
